Miso glazed Hamachi collar on bok choy

Booked this place for Father's Day and we almost didn't go because we had our baby with us and didn't really realize it's more of a cocktail bar. We decided to just wing it and show up and see what happens, and we're super glad we did. The menu is pretty small but the food was amazing. We got a salad, croquettes, and a hamachi collar. We also ordered the house bread because our server (who was great, by the way) recommended it to us. Everything we got tasted great and was very fresh. We got the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The restaurant itself was really nice and was a cool place to hangout. Definitely recommend this spot for a date night or just a drink.

An elegant atmosphere that's perfect for a date night. I ordered the famous branzino, and it absolutely lived up to the hype; easily one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. The flavors and presentation were incredible. Reservations are definitely recommended, but I was able to walk in and get seated after a short wait. The staff were outstanding: friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. Overall, it was an amazing dining experience from start to finish. I'm already looking forward to coming back and exploring more of the menu!

I came here with a couple of friends during the second weekend it opened, and it was such a fun experience from the start. We waited in line and even ended up on their Instagram, which was a cool surprise. One of our friends works here and made sure we had an amazing seat right at the bar, where we could watch the kitchen prepare everything. It made the whole meal feel even more special. We ordered a variety of dishes so we could try a little bit of everything, but the standout of the night was easily the whole grilled fish. It was incredible. While we were enjoying a few cocktails and catching up, the chef came over and brought us a complimentary plate of anchovy bread, which was absolutely delicious and such a thoughtful touch. The Brooklyn truly lives up to its name. The low lighting and modern organic feel make it feel like you have stepped right into Brooklyn, New York. Every detail feels intentional. I would definitely recommend it for a date night or for anyone looking to try something unique and full of flavor.

Latest RVA restaurant Holy Trinity: Lost Letter, Lillian, and The Brooklyn. Man I love anything these chefs create. They are iconic restaurants for a reason. Everything from vibe to service to food/drink is 5 stars. I have been loving The Brooklyn and highly recommend people check it out. It's located in Scott's Addition so has a quite a bit of free street parking nearby. It's smartest to make a reservation, but you can get a table with a little wait. The unassuming building houses a really trendy and moody restaurant. I love when a restaurant has industry vibes. The bar wraps around in an L shape. There are also some tables along the wall. It's an intimate space great for a date night. Also the drinks are INCREDIBLE. My first visit was a date with my fiancé. I loved my French 75 and he was so excited to find a coke and fernet on the menu. We shared the candied squash, BBQ mushrooms, and branzino. The BBQ mushrooms are a must. Their flavor and texture just shine. It's just a great dish. I also adore the branzino. The buttery fish with the flakey skin is just so tasty. They rotate their menu here, but the mushrooms and branzino were on the menu last night when I went with my girls for Galentine's. For my Galentine's adventure I had a paloma which was salty magic. It was so easy to drink and just delicious. My friends also loved their drinks. One of my friend's and I shared the lamb skewers and dewdrop cabbage. I think the szechuan was a bit too overpowering for me on the lamb. The cabbage was soooo scrumptious. Another heavenly textured dish. The gorgonzola sauce elevated the tender cabbage topped with bread crumbs GAH SO YUMMY. Dinner and drinks or just drinks are both great options here. The people who work here are really cool and kind. Everything about this place is just great.

The Brooklyn almost looks abandoned at night, until you get close enough to see the faint glow of the lights inside. The parking here was parallel spaces on both sides of the street. On a cool night like tonight, I could heard the faint din of silverware and plates intermingling as we approached, barely audible through the small, open window above the door. The first thing I noticed upon entering was how loud the environment was. Our server, Josh, greeted us as we entered. The hostess, whose name I didn't catch, sat us quickly without a reservation on a Wednesday around 8 pm. She gave us a reserved table, but they were considered a no show. I know, I'm bad about reservations. My luck's going to run out soon, I know it. We were seated at a table for two next to another couple in the corner (back to them later). The place settings were modern and we were provided lovely silverware and napkins with which to enjoy our food. The menu is curated to a fault. The selection for vegetarians include several items like the cabbage, mushroom, and sweet potato entrees. There are also meat options, including beef, lamb, seafood, and pork chops. My partner ordered the coke (a Mexican Coca Cola with cane sugar), and I ordered the Amaro Falso. It had a strange taste that I couldn't place; I'd never had one before, and for nine dollars, I doubt I'll be trying it again. The ice cube is clearly used to reduce the volume of liquid, but it did make it look fancy. We ordered three entrees to get a feel for the menu, including the beef carpaccio, with porcini, horseradish, shallot, and potato chips; old tavern farms japanese sweet potato, smoked cherry salsa macha, whipped feta; and grilled dewdrop cabbage, gorgonzola dolce, asian pear, and caraway breadcrumb. The food was superb. Though, as someone who despises onions, the beef carpaccio was a miss on my first bite. After I plucked those shallot strings off, it hit the mark pretty well. I thought the other entrees were better, even without the shallots. As my partner said, the food tastes as if it came straight from a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, and I wholly agree. It has a Michelin star feel about the dining experience, except for the bar and cocktail scene. It is plainly not for me. Now, back to that couple I mentioned earlier. We were sat next to a couple who were seemingly celebrating something, and they were slurring their speech, the woman more so than the man. She ordered another drink anyway, and proceeded to accidentally spill it on my partners suede boots (her favorites) when animatedly gesturing to her partner. The clearly drunk woman apologized and asked if my partner was okay, though, she's too nice to say anything until they leave. I spoke with Josh and the bartender to get some club soda, and she suggested getting one of the paper napkins from the bathroom to dry the suede better, which was kind of them both to help. Josh apologized profusely and promised not to seat us next to them again, if there was a next time. I chuckled at that and we went back to our experience. We ordered the sticky toffee pudding, which reminded me of the Chengos at Chicano's Cocina. The textures, flavors, temperatures, and scents were all extremely pleasant, and sealed off an otherwise rather off-night very well. The check was about 100 USD for two people: three entrees, two non-alcoholic drinks, and one dessert. Your mileage will vary as the prices can vary wildly depending on the dish. The experience overall was mostly positive, my two complaints being the shallots and the unruly couple. The Brooklyn is going for a trendy, sophisticated vibe, and it very nearly pulls it off perfectly with its quality ingredients, clean design choices, and hospitable staff.

I'll tell ya right now...if they add fries to this menu (thickly sliced & cooked in duck fat preferably)...I don't think I would ever leave! If they bring over the bread from Lost Letter/Lillian, just throw my bedroom in the back corner! Make a RESY ahead of time or you won't get a table. The space is super chic - think NY corner bistro/bar - and cozy. I love that the bar seats get you prime real estate views of the kitchen. I highly recommend the chickory salad - it's a salad to rival ALL salads. Everything is so fresh, bright, colorful, and the flavor combo here is unmatched - think: a ceasar salad's bitter, more bougie Aunt. The branzino is literally cooked to perfection...seasoned for the gawds...and paired with a delicate light sauce that doesn't overpower any of the essence of that fresh bass. You'll want to lick the plate, but they're so cute and will give you a spoon ;) The sticky toffee pudding is a really unexpected treat. I love the pairing of the tangy sourness and acidity of the buttermilk - it's so lemon-forward - with the very sweet, dense, yet super-moist (almost carrot-cakey) mini cake. All in all, another home run from this RVA trio. See you on the corner!

Richmond's newest restaurant, and it did not disappoint! The space is small and cozy so definitely make a reservation. The menu is small too, so I really think you can't go wrong with any of the dishes. Our server was great and she said we couldn't miss the mushroom dish - it was my favorite bite of the meal! Also really enjoyed the squash and the meatloaf, and the pumpkin gelato affogato was unreal. Very elevated and unique cuisine for Richmond and I was really impressed!

I had really high hopes for The Brooklyn and was not disappointed. The location, the service, the food - all of it together makes The Brooklyn special. I love when a restaurant gets the lighting right. It's a little moody, a little sexy, a little cozy... it's literally everything you want to a special evening. And honestly... The Brooklyn makes your night just a little more special. Josh was very attentive offering suggestions at every turn. Anything that he recommended we went for because looking at the menu, you can't really make a bad decision. The highlight of our meal was the Branzino. The fish was delicate and paired perfectly with the sauce. One thing that made the fish so special was how crispy the skin was. Perfection! I cannot wait to go back and try the steak and pork skewers. We have a winner!

Loved eating here. The food concept is fresh and seasonal from a wood fired oven. The wines and drinks were good! I think the service was also very attentive. This is a great addition to Scott's addition dining scene! With great options in a slightly upscale setting. My only criticism was that the restaurant is LOUD and it's difficult to hear inside.

    deconstructed strawberry shortcake

honestly can't think of a better meal i've had. will be talking about it forever. on top of that, our waiter was attentive & knowledgeable, and we had a great corner booth with a great ambiance. wood fire bread - 7/10 (nothing wrong with it, but also nothing crazy special. delicious, would order again, but wouldn't go out of my way just to eat it) oxtail croquettes - 10/10. flavor was great, just the right amount of spice. i've never had oxtail before but i loved it branzino - 3000/10. best fish i've ever had. lemon & caper sauce was to die for. will be thinking about this entree for the rest of time. pork chop - 10/10. husband got this & said it was delicious. i had one bite and agree it was great, but have not had a lot of pork chops to compare against strawberry shortcake dessert - 15/10. amazing. flavorful, fresh, could eat 10 of them sticky toffee pudding - 10/10. not normally a toffee gal but this was so delicious and i'd absolutely order again.

"Bread". Soggy and not good. Skip this.

They offer a variety of sauces and flavors that really elevate the seafood and make the experience feel unique and interactive. It was such a fun meal to share, comparing each bite and talking through all the different flavors. The service was excellent. Our waitress was knowledgeable about everything we ordered and made great recommendations. The atmosphere is just as impressive. The decor is simple but thoughtfully elevated, and sitting at the bar area feels like you have stepped out of Richmond and into somewhere like New York City. I also love following Lillian on social media to keep up with their latest specials. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves seafood.

Hats off to the staff at Lillian who continue to be wonderful, but now that they have scrapped…read moretheir dollar oyster lunch specials, the food has absolutely nothing to offer. Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.

He asked for the password and we, unprepared, had to tell him a joke or an interesting fact. Luckily, my partner had one on hand. The atmosphere was lovely, very reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy, or at least what you'd imagine it to be like. Our server came by within a few minutes of us being seated. She lacked enthusiasm, unlike the host, unfortunately. Her service turned out to be lackluster as well. We ordered the chicken pot pie and the filet mignon with asparagus. For drinks, the Grape Gatsby and Maine root beer. The food, like our server, lacked appeal. The saving grace was the host and the atmosphere. The view was lovely and the intimacy of the setting was a welcome experience. For dessert we ordered the bread pudding, and it was tasty, though nothing special. The burned odor that we smelled prior to its arrival turned out to be the bread. I can recommend Grandstaff and Stein as an experience, but you should not expect much in the way of culinary delights or exemplary service. We probably won't be back, but if you've never been, it's worth trying at least once.
