We were seated on time, waters with the small bottle left on the table, we ordered she crab soup.. it was my first time having it.. it was absolutely delicious. I'm a big fan now. My entree was honey brussel sprouts, mac n cheese, blackened salmon. the salmon and brussel sprouts were very flavorful and each bite was better than the last. the mac n cheese though..! It was disappointing, tasted like noodles with cheese poured on top. it didn't match the salmon, it had no taste, needed salt & pepper or something to help it taste like something. My iced tea was really good too. so the mac was the only thing that wasn't up to par. Finally dessert was a special on the board, caramel apple bread pudding. we shared one, it was a huge shareable piece that was warm and melted in my mouth very good. We went to savory grain for lunch on a Friday and despite it being graduation weekend at the time, the wait was short. We sat outside and they have options for seating including under shaded umbrellas. The service itself that day was 2 out of 5. Our poor server I am pretty sure had all of the tables plus the bar and did her best. I realize the restaurant industry is struggling with hiring right now, but they had large groups demanding her attention and should close down a set number of tables to make it more manageable. We ordered the jalapeño bacon poppers, hamburger, chicken pot pie. Hamburger was 5/5 Jalapeño poppers 1/5 Chicken pot pie 2/5 The jalapeño poppers bacon wrapped around was not crispy, felt very chewy and not cooked. Chicken pot pie had great presentation but not a ton of flavor but was still warm and cozy, hamburger had great flavor and the fries were great. This was a recommendation from my barber/stylist, Danny Smith (Nirvana Hair Studio) who had a shop nearby a while ago. He said that he thought I would enjoy it, and he was right. We arrived around 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening. We didn't have a reservation on a Saturday (surprise, surprise), but there were open seats on the patio and at the bar. We chose the patio, and while patio chairs left something to be desired (some bolts need to be tightened or the chairs replaced, one), it was a pleasant night. Our server came out promptly. She was prepared, knew the specials, and was able to answer any questions we had. We ordered the pimento cheese and crostini for an appetizer. For dinner I ordered the signature burger with the sauteed broccolini as a side, and my partner chose the chicken pot pie. The chicken pot pie came out hot and smelled incredible. The signature Burger was medium, exactly as I ordered it. It was Juicy, tender, and tasted fantastic with its classic potato bun. The desserts sounded fantastic, especially the "fudgy tiramisu" as our server described it, but we were too full to try them. The GM came by our table to personally introduce themselves and ensure that our experience was excellent. I always respect that level of service and integrity. I feel remiss that I neglected to mention the patio chairs. Swing and a miss. The traffic noise on the patio can be somewhat grating, and we were approached by a panhandler/down on their luck individual as we were wrapping up the check. I admit that it's possible I ordered wrong and if I ever go back, I would try something else. The service was great but the food was quite underwhelming. I often have trouble deciding what to order and I love side dishes so I was intrigued by the savory side plate entree. You have a choice of 3 sides, which is paired with cornbread topped with honey butter. It's a nice option to try multiple things. The best side was the mac and cheese. The cornbread was more dense than I'd like but the honey butter was delicious. The brussel sprouts lacked flavor and seasoning. The food was amazing, incredible sandwiches and perfectly seasoned French fries. The menu is so diverse and well planned. Our service was impeccable, and we enjoyed lunching at this cool spot! I loved the small "pint" glasses we were served with that I asked if I could purchase some, and to my delight, the manager allowed me to buy two! Another brunch outing with one of my girlfriends and we had a fabulous time! My girlfriend ordered the quiche and it was served with a spring mix salad. The quiche was tasty and the salad was fresh. Enjoyed dinner at Savory Grain. First appreciate the handicapped access with very convenient bathroom which is rare for older buildings. Staff was very attentive to my needs with use of a walker. Friendly wait staff. We parked on the street and didn't notice that there were parking spots on the side, until we left. That would be a good amenity to add on the web site - or with replies to reservations. We enjoyed the Brussels Sprouts appetizer for starters. Well cooked and we both loved the flavors of other components. There was a Loooooong wait for our entrees - which I didn't mind, except that the crowds and noise level increased while we waited. I had blackened salmon with dill sauce (not much dill) which was delicious and flakey while my husband had the crab cakes which had generous portions of lump crab meat, but my husband missed spice (old bay didn't really come through for him) and wanted more breading - (he's picky that way). Sides: zucchini and cornbread for me; fries and mac & cheese for him. The cornbread was notably Yankee cornbread - sweet, thick, cakey with a wonderful crust - but with my southern girl background, it was a difference- abet a delicious one. I was served zucchini when I ordered broccolini and was given zucchini as a substitute without checking with me first. I found it strange that at 6:30 reservation, the kitchen was already out of a staple on their menu. I was offered the chance to change the side if i wanted something else, but with the long wait, I was ready to eat. Zucchini was well cooked, but lacked any spice or citrus to make it shine. Husband appreciated hot fries and mac & cheese, but reported that it was nothing special - in both presentation (no crusty top or sprinkle of paprika to make it stand out) and taste (cheese was milder than expected). With the longer wait for our entrees came more dinner guests and the volume of conversation increased so that we couldn't really have a conversation without repeating ourselves and raising our voices. Savory Grain is overall a nice spot with decent food and an upbeat vibe. But I would caution anyone looking for a quiet, cozy setting to look elsewhere. The food was absolutely delicious. I got the shrimp & grits and cannot believe how incredible it tasted, and how much food it was! My fiancé got the scallops and it was unfortunately not enough food for him, but the shrimp and grits were so filling he was able to finish my plate! And we STILL had leftovers. Two happy hour wines, two appetizers (soup and salad), and two entrees ended up being $117 with a 20% tip. Overall, it was a great experience! I would go again for sure. Steak was a lot more rare than my usual medium, broccoli slightly overcooked, my partners meatloaf was covered in spicey barbecue sauce with bacon wrap (bacon very under cooked). I'll definitely try again and go for a seafood option like the crabcakes or salad. My meal was just so-so. Not best fries in town. Good cocktails but on pricey side at $15 each. The food was very good we went for brunch at 11:20am and it wasn't too busy yet but it was steady and got crowded. The crab cake sandwich was the special and very tasty plenty of meat no filler. The waffle was a nice blend of fluff and crisp. The shrimp and grits had a delectable flavor I found the sauce a little thin for my liking but flavorful. The service was good but the wait for our food was slow especially since it wasn't busy when we arrived and ordered. Firstly let me say, the food here was fantastic!! The inside is cute. The music was great...There were just a few things during our brunch service that were a little less than ideal that made me give it 3 stars. Despite having a reservation we had to wait about 20 minutes for our table, and that was with me and my boyfriend running late to join our friends. We figured it was just a busy brunch so we let it slide. Secondly, it took a long time to get our food ordered and eventually delivered. There were many great specials and live music during brunch, and we had a lovely seat with cute decor, but this was a bit tough since we were already hungry and then met with more of a delay. I had wanted to order a latte but they didn't have an espresso machine, only drip, and I was fine with that, but they also didn't have any plant milk. Just cow milk, which as a lactose sensitive person, I just couldn't do it so I didn't order a coffee. That really bummed me since I figured at such a busy brunch spot in Richmond they would at least have almond or oat milk for coffee! That said, the food was incredible. Flaky buttery tasty biscuits. This review is not based on the food, because we never got to that point. Went in on Saturday 8th with 6 pm reservations made. Place was pretty empty with the exception of a couple parties that were finishing up and one person at the bar. We were seated at a 6 top ( just 2 of us) initially but we requested to move to a 2 top window side. One thing that I immediately noticed was the amount of flies in the place. After we moved , we sat from 6:05 until 6:50 waiting to be greeted by SOMEONE, but finally flagged down someone for help. Server came over telling us that this was only her second shift and she would take care of us. We ordered a drink, she brought it and never came back, we saw her with her back pack on leaving about 15 minutes later. Asked for the manager and found out it was the bartender when he came over. He apologized, and said he would go check to see what was happening. Honestly, I'm not sure how this place is functioning from day to day, no leadership present, no server/ manager awareness, no sense of urgency, no teamwork and no CLUE as to how customer service should be achieved..some menu items listed on the website not available on the In house menu, my friend suggested this place as she had visited before and said she had a pleasant experience but I honestly believe that there is a training/ culture issue in this place . I definitely will not visit again to even give the food a chance because for me, the guest experience starts when you enter the establishment and for things to be this bad in the FOH I'm afraid of what's going on in the BOH. read more

Mouthwatering! I met a friend for dinner with my 9 month old. They were very accomodating with her. The high chair was ready when we arrived. The drink menu is well rounded giving creative cocktails with a variety of alcohol. I'm a huge gin fan and was excited to have multiple options on the menu. All the appetizers sounded good but we went for the spinach and crab dip. It had a nice little kick without being too much. For dinner I got the chicken pot pie which was perfect for a cold day. I went on a dinner date with a friend to the Savory Grain for the first time and I'm so happy that this was the restaurant we chose! Not only does it have a beautiful interior space but it also has has lots windows and an outdoor patio so you can enjoy your meal outside in some beautiful weather. The menu is full of American style food that is super delicious and comes in generous portions. I can't emphasize enough how this is most definitely a place with quality AND quantity. My friend loved the Farmhouse Salad with Grilled Salmon and I chose the Savory Sides plate. This gave me a chance their homemade cornbread, sauteed baby bok choy, broccolini, and a fresh side salad. All of it was so fresh and flavorful. There are lots of great menu options as well as daily specials so it's difficult to just pick one thing! The serving staff is super attentive and answers any questions you may have. They also have a tasty looking brunch menu that is also accompanied by a jazz band over the weekends. The restaurant isn't huge so I do recommend making reservations and arriving early to find parking, considering that it is located so close to downtown with the majority of parking options being street parking. Confession that this was a business expensed meal and that always makes it better! We were also on a weeknight, which meant plenty of space and great, attentive service. I started with a woodford reserve bourbon and coke. They have a nice bar selection (~10 bourbons) and others enjoyed some of the specialty cocktails. We tried a few apps. My favorites were the mussels and the brocollini. The warm and creamy sauce with the mussels and grilled bread was so good. The tomato bruschetta had a nice balsamic tang. For my meal, I got the grilled salmon. This was excellent and the honey garlic carrots were a great, elevated side item. We tried 4 desserts to share (8 of us). The decor is beautiful and the service is friendly and efficient, but I was very disappointed in my meal here. I ordered a bacon jalapeño quiche that comes with a side salad and home fries. The crust for the quiche was wonderful, delicious and flakey. Unfortunately the filling was completely bland, I could find neither bacon nor jalapeño in the dish and the quiche also contained absolutely no cheese. So it was rather like scrambled eggs in a pie shell. The home fries were delicious, crispy and salty. The salad was a nice mix of field greens, but the dressing lacked acid so they tasted like greens dressed in a neutral oil. One of my dining companions had the chicken pot pie. It was clear when it was brought out that it was undercooked. She said the filling tasted good but the crust was raw. This place feels like a hidden gem because I haven't heard many people talk about it, but it deserves more hype! For appetizers, we had gotten the fried brussel sprouts, the pimento cheese, and the bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeños. I can't even say which was my favorite because they were all incredible. I got the seared scallops which came with potatoes and baby zucchini. The dish as a whole was fantastic, but I'm not sure if it was just this specific batch, but the baby zucchini were incredibly bitter. I noticed one of the other members of the party left the baby zucchini alone as well, so I would recommend subbing in that side for a different one. Otherwise, I'd totally order the scallops again! My wife is out of town, so came here alone walking the dogs. Nice patio w a breeze and around 6 tables not encroacing on each other. Perfect. Lizzie was my server, but several came out to offer treats, water, and petting the dogs--too cool. I had bacon-wrapped jalapenos to start--cheap on happy hour--and a prosecco followed by whiskey sodas. For dinner I had a Cobb salad, which was outstanding. The blue cheese crumbles reall stood out, as did the presentation of the egg and the quality of real bacon pieces--not over-cooked and not bits--real squares of bacon. I'm on keto for a diet, so salads and meat are my vlosest friends, but I want to come back for the rest of the menu w my wife when I'm done (began at 223 in Feb and down to 199 now). So this place gets 5 stars because it succeeds in food, service and ambiance. We were greeted by Lizzy who is a bubbly, engaging genuine soul. To start we ordered bruschetta. It was lit. Now it isn't standard bruschetta, the tomatoes come in a somewhat runny form, soaked in balsamic but the taste is magnificent. This dish is a triumph. Then my bae ordered the blackened salmon with Brussels sprouts and Mac and cheese. Everything tasted phenomenal. The Mac and cheese is penne noodles with a sauce but tastes like baked Mac or close to it. THEN I ordered the chicken pot pie. Whisk me back to childhood, on a cold day with a comforting meal! The flavor packed a punch and the crust could have easily been part of a peach cobbler. Now I already told you about how cool Lizzy was- but the venue has a nice New York City street restaurant vibe. We visited The Savory Grain for their jazz brunch. We were a group of four celebrating our two friend's new jobs. We learned about the jazz brunch the night before our reservation and were pleasantly surprised. The music was relaxing and lovely. I appreciated that it wasn't overpowering and that it fit right in. The Savory Grain is a gorgeous space and has amazing natural lighting. I loved that it was right next to a Pulse stop. They seemed really busy, so it took us a little to be seated for our reservation. We came around noon on a Sunday. Two of us got their mimosa (which is a generous full cup serve) and the other two got coffee. We waited about 40 minutes for our food. We didn't mind, but it's something to note if you're in more of a rush. We really loved our brunch here. They were out of a couple things, but this wasn't a problem for us (just shows you how yummy things are here). The food was good. I loved the grilled apple salad with chicken. It was so refreshing and delicious, the dried figs and Buskey Cider vinaigrette really took it to the next level. I normally don't get salads out, but I definitely recommend trying this one. My hubby's chicken pot pie soup was sensational and his breakfast burger was out of this world. Our server was really nice and attentive, as well. We will definitely be going back!!! We wanted to like this place. But alas it was not meant to be. The mussels were extraordinarily dry and tasted plain. I have ordered and made steamed mussels many times. There's always a ton of flavorful broth. The mussels were dried out completely. The bottom of the bowl had no broth so what's the point of serving bread with this app if there's no broth? As far as the fries, half were cold and soggy. And I paid extra for the fries. The entrées were equally unimpressive. Nothing tasted fresh or made with attention to details. My crabcakes were not crispy or hot. The mac-n-cheese was overcooked and tasted like it's been sitting out all day. The brussel sprouts had no crunch and tasted like they were precooked and reheated. My wife's ribeye had no seasoning. It was bland. How do you NOT season a steak before cooking or serving it? I want this place to succeed. But the fundamentals were lacking. That little chill in the air means there's a delicious, garlicky, double-crusted Chicken Pot Pie waiting for you at The Savory Grain. They get two thumbs up for the savory, garlicky sauce topping because it really added to the creamiest if the dish without making it overly rich. It's also served in a cast iron pan which helped to keep it warm from the beginning to the end of the meal. I got the brussel sprouts as a side and while they tasted good, they were hard and needed a little more cooking time. Our server was very friendly and helpful with questions about the menu.
