I loved my experience here! The employees were superrrr nice, and it seemed like they got along really well and were very efficient at working together. I had a super pleasant solo-dining experience and was in-and-out in 35 minutes, without ever feeling rushed. Wife and I happened to stroll in for dinner. Customer service was good. We ordered the soft shell crab pad Thai and the shockoe bottom roll. Pad Thai was pretty good, same goes with the soft shell crab. I wished the soft shell crab was stir fried in with the pad thai but it was still good. Went here on a whim after wanting to try it from a trip prior and was not disappointed. Waiter was very attentive, menu easy to grasp (beyond wanting a little of everything) and food came out great after ordering a proper blend of the Japanese and Thai options for a family of 4. As well as a welcomed favorite from the sushi that my partner was happy to see for once. When walking in I was greeted by two people, the hostess and the man behind the bar. The man smiled and said hello but the hostess just started at my blankly and made me feel stupid for asking questions about the menu. Something in my gut told me to peak at the menu and leave but I unfortunately went against it. I would recommend other Thai spots before this one. I was craving some Thai but I just didn't hit the spot for me. I guess the $17 I spent on the so called "lunch special" was okay. I ordered the Red Curry, it came with a sweet and sour soup. The little cup of soup I had, had the most flavor almost too much so I added it to my flavorless curry but as you can see there's only 3 pieces of tofu in it. As for the red curry, it was in one of those small takeout containers and waaaay more rice than actual food. The food isn't bad it's just not as flavorful and makes me wish I chose a different place for lunch, especially for the price. That's the biggest factor for me. Overall it's a beautiful restaurant. We came to Mom's Siam 2 after shamrock, and it was so good!!! It was pretty cold by the evening, so a bowl of rice and warm curry was the perfect thing to eat. Our server suggested this curry and it was so yummy - it had potatoes, veggies, and tofu. There were so many vegetarian options so it made me very happy! The food was out pretty quickly despite how crowded it was. We had no wait either, we were seated promptly. They have a great lunch menu to choose from, and it comes with either a hot and sour or a miso soup. I opted for the hot and sour. It was decent enough, I liked the big chunks of tofu. I ordered a beef and vegetable dish. It had beef, peppers, carrots, and mushrooms. I asked for it very spicy. It was pretty good- not as good as my usual Thai spots in Richmond but definitely satisfied my craving. The service was super quick which was great since I only have an hour for lunch. After my run around the Virginia Capitol plaza I was really hungry for Poke Bowl but could find one close to where I was so I decided to go towards my hotel when my Map told me there is one inside the James Tower -- Sesame Sushi yet when I got there I was told it's closed (not sure if it's for good) the concierge at the tower told me there is a Japanese place -- Mom's Siam and when I looked I saw one but I guess a branch of it which I literally a minute walk from my hotel. It's actually not just Japanese Restaurant it's Asian Fusion because they also serve Thai food. I opted for the Duck Curry. The food was great and fresh herbs and amazing taste on the seasoning. The meat was tender and tasty. I would've prepared it if the rice was on a separate plate so it's drench in the curry sauce. Also a more friendly approach since I felt as if I was not welcome. The price was just right as well, $23 with a drink. This place was located at the historical Richmond downtown, totally different vibe than downtown. Streets are cobblestone so yes comfortable shoes are needed. I would definitely check it out if you're hungry for curry. read more

It's been four years since my last review of Mom Siam 2. Since that time I've mostly avoided this place. That was until my baby love starting working in the downtown area circa January of 2018. She is a fan of Thai food so we decided to give this place another shot. Well I'm happy to announce I've found my signature lunch dish! The classic Thai fried rice with either seafood or shrimp. I always order mine with EXTRA seafood or extra shrimp and request extra cilantro sprinkled on top. It's an expensive $4.00 upcharge but in my humble opinion it's worth it. Whenever my love and I dine here I always pick up the tab, since with my upcharge it's an expensive lunch $30+ My rich ass can swing it so it doesn't much matter. For me, having an amazing plate of Thai fried rice LOADED up with shrimp is nothing short of perfect. I also give my steaming pile of rice a good squirt of sriracha sauce to perfect it. During the cold miserable months in the Commonwealth this place fits the bill in spades. read more

Dredged it in the chocolate sauce on the plate for just the right flavor combo . The place was packed and we were in a time crunch, I was worried it was going to take long for out food but I was wrong. The food didn't take long and it was super hot when it came out except for the crispy spring rolls. Spring rolls did not come out as hot, plus I got gipped. The menu said 4 spring rolls but I got 2 and got charged full price for it. I got beef drunken noodles, the flavor and spices were there but the beef kinda tasted funny. In my neverending quest for lunch spots where I work, I ended up per a coworker's suggestion at Mom's Siam 2. --Food: My coworker suggested that I get the Bangkok Chicken, which is "Crispy chicken with string beans, onion, bell peppers, bamboo shoot and fresh basil leaf". I also got a side of Seafood Tom Yum. I immediately took a liking to the chicken in the Bangkok chicken as it was lightly fried and pretty flavorful. The fresh basil leaf wasn't something I was expecting but was very refreshing and not overpowering. I feel that there may have been a little too many bell peppers, but they didn't taste bad. I just ended up pushing them aside. My coworker said that he sometimes get them replaced with pineapple when he orders it, which sounds delightful and something I'll do next time. All together a tasty dish. The Tom Yum was good as well. It was served in a much larger bowl than I was expecting, but I ended up finishing just about all of it. The seafood in there was shrimp, squid rings, and something that appeared to be maybe a scallop. The seafood portion of it wasn't super fancy, but the broth was tasty. I didn't have the sushi so I can't comment on that. (Mostly because it's more expensive and I'm not the hugest fan of sushi, though I do find it quite satiating when I'm in the mood) --Cost: Altogether I think I spent maybe $18 or so for the entree and soup? You could get a lunch special or entree for less than $15 probably. It's not fast food and was pretty good, so I think the cost is justified. --Atmosphere: The interior is nice and is located next to a bunch of other lunch places within walking distance of the James Center / Gateway Plaza. Conveniently located for me as it's not as sketchy as walking the other direction. I will say that for some reason though, Cell Data (Verizon at least), doesn't have coverage in here all that well. Didn't check on the possibility of Wifi. Oh well, it's probably healthy to not stare at electronics all day. --Service: A couple people commented on slow or no service, but I didn't really notice. My order was taken pretty quickly and I was checked up on multiple times. I did go at 1:30 PM so it was a little slower with still a high number of staff, so maybe it's that. --Overall: I'm sure I'll be back since it's close, relatively affordable, and tasty. Can't comment on the sushi and perhaps dinner or main lunch time is different, but I had a good experience. It's not one of those "This is the best!
