Believe the hype. The food here is delicious! Fig is a very popular restaurant in Charleston. You have to make reservations in advance that's how popular it is. Our party was only able to get reservations at 1015pm! Yes, that late and I would do it again! To start I order a salad and let me tell you, it could have been a meal by itself. For my main course I had the hanger steak. Fig does it right, medium rare with bold flavors. I think what I loved the most was the chimichurri on top of the steak. The flavor combined with the polenta and steak was just bursting with so much yumminess. Food Is Good. Absolutely. FIG certainly lived up to the hype. We made a 10pm reservation (all we could get) on a Friday night. The service was top notch with perfect recommendations, frequent check ins, and they kept our waters full at all times. My heart was set on the potatoes but, as we were warned, sometimes they run out of items late in the evening (the menu is new each day). However, our server spoke to the kitchen and saved the day(!) with the very last batch. Can you say above and beyond? The wagu beef and the potatoes were the absolute best. Juicy, flavorful, and worth every single penny. Even the salad deserves a shout out -- the crispy shallots were such a perfect touch to a plain jane sounding salad. Nothing was plain about any of the dishes...even the sorbet was like apple pie reincarnated as gelato. Oh, and the drinks the best we had in Charleston. I can't recommend this place enough. Five stars, hands down. All in, after tip, we paid $385 for drinks, dinner, and desserts. Best meal I have ever had in the US. The first meal of our vacation-- set the bar so high nothing else could touch it. The cream puffs, the halibut, the oysters, the gnocchi, the tomato tartine tart thing... was SOOOOO good I'd put a candle in it for my birthday. The restaurant has a few staples that anchor its selection, but other than those, the menu rotates daily so there's always something new to try. My fiancee and I started with the tomato tartine and whipped goat cheese. Jammy, light, and savory, the tomato happily caught us off guard with how delicate and impressively prepared it was. Afterward, I had the grouper, well-cooked and tasty, though I could have (should have) enjoyed another portion. My fiancee had the pork schnitzel, well-balanced by the bitter broccolini evening up the acidity of the tomato sauce and the salty fat of the pork. Not only is the schnitzel one of their house favorites, it was also more filling... Go for the schnitzel. For dessert we shared a delicious and airy panna cotta that was served with blueberries, just the right touch of fruitiness to balance out the dish. My one mistake was not going all out on ordering food. One entree apiece with an appetizer and a dessert to share were not enough for two people (the portions lean a bit small). Does Fig really need another rave review? I say yes! My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful meal and experience on a Wednesday night. The restaurant is lively, but not loud. It's lovely inside. The host and waitstaff were absolutely incredible-charming, respectful and seemed very pleased to be there . Thats a real testament to a well run business. But the best part of course was the food (and drinks). Cocktails were delicious and well made-we had an old fashioned (husband) and I had a martini and they were both very well done. We shared the pate-just delicious but even better were the accompaniments that come with it to enhance the dish-some beets , bacon jam and house made pickles-all perfect. Dinner was the Bouillabaisse for me-it's served in a covered dish as it should be to keep warm-and it was splendid. Beautiful broth-the waitress said people have told her they would drink it out of a glass-I couldn't agree more! The seafood was well done and plentiful. I will be thinking about the bouillabaisse for days to come! My husband had the beef, and it was just perfect. Do yourself a favor and order the potatoes as a side-you wont be disappointed. They were creamy, flavorful and we would order them every time from here on out. Dessert which we don't usually order, but were advised that we should try the sorghum sticky pudding , didn't disappoint. It's really delicious and topped off a great night. Believe the hype! This was our first dinner on our first visit to Charleston and it was 100 percent worth the wait! We made reservations a month prior and they only had a 10:15 pm spot available. I'm glad the we decided to stick it out cause I normally don't eat that late. Service was great and the food was fantastic! Do not skip the Ricotta Gnocchi alla Bolognese or the Chicory Salad. These 2 dishes would make a great lunch pairing. We ended up ordering 2 of the gnocchi dishes because it was that good! For my entree I chose the Sautéed Black Bass which came with a curried carrot purée, peas, asparagus and ramps. This was delicious! Never knew peas, carrots and fish would be so good together. For dessert I decided on the lime crème puffs. You get 3 generous sized puffs that taste like heaven! Not too sweet but just right to enjoy with a cup of their mint tea. It is in house gnocchi that was so tasty. For our entrees, he had the soft shell crab and I had the red snapper. His soft shell crab came with a carrot purée, spring peas and asparagus. My snapper came with spinach, ham and fingerling potatoes. Yes we had dessert but neither one of us remembers what it was called. A chocolate dessert with caramel on the bottom. Delicious. FOOD: Carolina gold fried rice with crab 5/5: This dish had so many different textures, from the slightly crispy rice to the soft crab. The flavors and textures complemented each other so well. From our first bite, it was love. Lowcountry bourride 5/5: There's a reason why this long-standing menu item has been a fan favorite. The stew is heart, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. We almost wanted to try everything in the menu he recommended For the starters, we got the chiven liver (with pork liver) pate which has been on the menu for day 1. Goes very well with the brioche served (which was a lot!). The royal red shrimp was our favorite starter, very light and fresh. We barely got the last reservation when reservations opened up. The service was awesome; the ambience was great. Every ingredient they used was fresh. Loved the gnocchi app - pillowy and the meat sauce was rich and something I still crave. The chicken entree was succulent. The shrimp bouillabaisse was good - but again most importantly the flavors were complex and ingredients fresh. Their desserts were so good - especially the frozen strawberry yogurt. My sister booked this reservation about two months in advance for our first trip to Charleston. She set a reminder on her phone and managed to snag a slot for dinner. As soon as the doors opened, we were seated promptly. I liked how the tables were spaced, it was busy, but not cramped. Service was quick and efficient, our glasses were never empty, our tables bussed quickly, and our waitress Corrin, gave us great recommendations, all with a smile on her face. We started off with the soft-shell crab, our waitress really sold us on this, and it was DELICIOUS. My sister had never had soft-shell crab before and she's not a big seafood person, so she was blown away by this starter. We should have ordered two! It was THAT good. For mains, my sister ordered Pork Milanese and upon our waitress' recommendation, I went for the bouillabaisse. There was a weird cold spell this week, and at 35 degrees, a warm hearty soup sounded particularly appetizing. It was wonderful. In a light, flavorful, saffron-based broth, grouper, shrimp...so so delicious. The crouton pushed it over the edge. I really feel like FIG does seafood very well. Unfortunately, the pork was a touch dry and covered in large, chunky pieces of bitter salad. Go for the seafood. My sister's favorite was the strawberry frozen yogurt with pistachio cake. It was fresh, delicate, and slightly tart. If I had known that FIG is meant to stand for "Food Is Good" prior to seeing it on the menu I would have never even made a reservation. We started with the chicken pate which was fine but needed more pickles. Next up was the cottage cheese with burnt eggplant, served with bread. It wasn't bad but the eggplant had no flavor other than salt and char. The textures of both components were the same and I'm still trying to figure out why they were paired together. Baby food on toast. Although the eggplant looked like the baby food after it re-emerges in the diaper. Salty but it's cottage cheese, so OK. The next three dishes were delivered together despite the request to course the meal out, dish by dish. We had the broiled oysters, lamb gnocchi, and the garden salad. The oysters were TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. I am not convinced the oysters were fresh but it was difficult to tell since the paprika was so overwhelming. FOUL AFTERTASTE. This was probably the worst dish of the evening. The gnocchi was decent but was overloaded with salt; we each had two pieces which was more than enough. I am so sick of restaurants adding salt to every dish to make up for using ingredients that aren't fresh. Last and least was the garden salad. A pile of arugula dressed with salt, parmesan, salt, fried shallots, and salt. Needed floss to extract the salt crystals from between my teeth. We decided that enough was enough and ordered the lime cream puffs. These were fine but they arrived at the table cut in half. Why did these people cut my cream puffs in half?The pictures on Yelp show four puffs per order but we were provided only six halves. Hmmm. Service was OK. Seemed that our server may have been new to FIG. We had to ask for new plates multiple times. Who wants to eat a salty green salad on a plate that has oyster juice all over it? Never asked if we were enjoying the experience. Prices were pretty out of line for what we were being served. $19 for a salty pile of arugula. $18 for the baby food. $27 for the gnocchi lulz. Additional salt at no charge. Drinks were priced ok and they weren't salty, but boy were they sweet. Come to FIG for swollen ankles. Is there aaaany way we could make a separate category for those restaurants that are truly life changing? I mean, 5 s don't do this place justice. I read all the hype, thought to myself, this place can't be thaaaat good, but then I tried to make reservations, well, good luck. It's a good thing I plan things months in advance and because of this we were able to make reservations for one of the days during our stay in Beautiful Charleston. I kept reading about this place, the ached and everything else. I asked the hubby if he wanted to show up about 40 mins early and stand in line to see if we could score bar seats, he agreed and it paid off! We were 5 & 6 out of 11 I believe available seats that they have. We got to see what everyone else was ordering and feel like this prepared us for the next day when we had reservations. Try everything m, seriously, you will regret it if you don't. Heaven's cheese pillows (ravioli), lamb tartare is still on my mind and I'm obsessed, that is a life changing dish, the chicken liver pâté, the fish dishes are perfectly paired with in season veggies. If I lived in Charleston, I would save my pennies and go here as often as I could. I would be a regular and I would consider my life made that's for sure. Haha! I am really glad that my wife's boss took us to FIG and, yes, paid as the prices on the menu were not cheap, but oh, my the food was excellent. Also, the tall waitress was there time and again, helping with selections and answering at length a number of questions that the four of us had. For starters, we had three appetizers to share but let me concentrate on two of them. Most unusual to my tastebuds was a delightful Johns Island Tomato Tarte Tatin which is made into a mold using Johns Island tomatoes (the best around) which have been peeled and apparently cooked and mixed in with cured olives and served with a goat cheese (chèvre). Another appetizer that we had was the lamb tartare. Our waitress said that lamb can have a bit strong or earthy (my words) flavor when cooked so having it as a tartare is much better. Of course, I was thinking of the delicious gyros that I have eaten with lamb, but this lamb tartare was absolutely delicious and mild. For my entrée, I selected the "Brick-Pressed Chicken = Mushrooms" with shiitake mushrooms, blue oyster, chanterelle and natural jus. The waitress had said that it would be the best chicken ever. I could not disagree after enjoying this pressed chicken with the wonderful complimentary additions to this dish. Went to FIG for our 2nd time. The staff was very friendly and hospitable. The starters were delicious, the gnocci had no potato which was interesting but still very good with the bolgnese. The Oysters were packed full of flavor from the broth in each shell, very nice. The entrees were good, the Boullabaisse was really good with large pieces of fish and shrimp with great flavor and very filling. The snapper was slightly underwhelming but still pretty good. All ingredients tasted fresh, and everything was well put together. Great wine list with plenty of options for diverse dishes. Our server was very knowledgeable on pairing choices and suggested a very good wine with the Boullabaisse. The food was outstanding, and we really appreciated Bobby M. , the best waiter I have ever been served by. we had had a bad experience the night before at a restaurant with delicious food, but was so loud, my friends and I couldn't talk. If I had a title for this review, it would be "worth the wait." You have to make reservations a month in advance, and let me tell you - I was on at 12:30AM (30 minutes from when our reservations opened up,) and I got the LAST one available at 10:30PM. While it was frustrating initially to imagine eating so late, there is no shortage of bars downtown to bop around and wait until it's time to sit, so I would say don't be discouraged if the same thing happens to you. This is just a fine dining experience across the board. Excellent service, from the moment you walk in and are greeted, to the moment you walk out and every staff member intentionally wishes you a good night. The food is top notch - one of those meals you won't forget anytime soon. Everything was well executed, but it was matched with a uniqueness in each dish that you just don't see too often. For example, I had their Porchetta Tonnato as an appetizer. It was these thin slices of pork served in a tangy cream sauce. I went out on the limb to try something different, and I was totally blown away. And then their burnt eggplant & cottage cheese...where else have you heard of something like this? Very different, very creative, VERY GOOD. They have a lengthy drink menu too, so definitely encourage exploring their spirits if you are looking for a drink to kick off your meal or a nightcap. Still one of our very favorite places in Charleston. This trip we went with a group of four and got the red porgy with rice, the nine vegetable salad, the fish cake, two orders of the ricotta gnocchi, the yukon gold potato puree, and collard greens, two groupers with borscht, the strip steak, and the Low Country bourride. We also ate an obscene amount of bread and butter. Obviously the menu is constantly changing so it's hard to label things as "must re-orders" but they will almost always have ricotta gnocchi in one sauce or another, and some kind of bourride, which we stupidly didn't get on our first visit here and was probably my favorite dish on this visit. We also particularly loved the red porgy with rice. The other dishes were all excellent and I'd gladly get them again, but I'd also be open to trying other types of dishes next time around. First I want to commend the staff for their amazing customer service - we did not have a reservation and were waitlisted and after a short wait the staff made sure we were able to experience the restaurant by setting up a table for us. Not common but they went above and beyond. That being said reservations are highly recommended as the restaurant does get busy and is very popular. There is a communal table that is available without reservations but may still require a wait and you can sit at the bar (only for drinks). The staff is very knowledgeable about the menu and have good recommendations for drinks and entrees. The portions are small but the food was presented well and the flavor was great! Just got off the plane and I was hungry so it was my friend who was meeting up with me and I wanted a very different type of menu, new American, and the name was unusual. Well it stands for Food is Great, how appropriate. My friend only wanted an appetizer since she couldn't wait for me as I arrived at 6:00pm. We each had an appetizer each, I tried the black eggplant with a side of their own homemade ricotta cheese served with Borghum bread, so yummilicious and my friend had the tomato tarte tatin that had a sweet flavor to it with very mild goat cheese. It was marvelous and we met a couple at the bar eating too, from Rhode Island who come annually (except during Covid), who always must order theses 2 appetizers so you know how good this must be. I then had the trigger fish and it was a smooth beautiful fish under a bed of baby Bibb lettuce. They also complemented a serving of their grilled okra that was a perfect accompaniment to the fish. Now how can I go without trying their desserts and too bad they do not serve a flight of their homemade scrumptious desserts so I love love Valrhona chocolate that they make for the pudding with a bed of salted caramel. Reservations are hard to come by but don't let that dissuade you as well a secret is if you get there around 4:40pm they actually seat up to 13 people at the bar and a communal table with no reservations.
