I can't say the food here is bad it's just terribly overrated. The space is a bit cold and reminded me of a hotel conference room. Service is non existent. They take your order and never come back. That aside there are some good flavors coming out of this kitchen. The high light was the arugula salad. The hot dishes however are served lukewarm which makes them feel like they have been sitting around for a while. I would not come here if you only have a few days in Charleston. This is a Charleston must eat restaurant! I would recommend booking a reservation a few weeks out from your visit to get a decent seating time because they are very popular...for good reason! I won't even try to name all the items we ordered, it was back during their fall menu. The items I'm still dreaming of include the ricotta gnocchi and tomato tarte tatin. We never even considered the tomato appetizer, until hearing our server explain what it tasted it like in great detail. She was so knowledgeable and sounded like a professional food critic when explaining each dish to us. I only wish I could remember her name, but she was superb and the main reason we ordered these dishes. For someone who values excellent service and ambience, my dinner at FIG was one of the best dining experiences I ever had. I came here on a Friday night for my wife's birthday. The place is gorgeous, with modern decor, warm colors, and dim lighting. Yet, there is a real comforting feel about this place. Maybe it's the wonderfully nice hosts who greet you at the front. Or it's the charming community table in the front corner that is first come first serve. Or maybe it's the cozy bar that you see as soon as you walk in. Or maybe it's the fact that the service here is so damn incredible. From the moment we walked in, we were given so much attention by the kindest staff. The hostess guided us to a standing counter across from the bar as they prepared our table. Another staff member brought us menus and assured us our table would be ready very shortly. Within two minutes, we were brought to our table. We were seated along the booths; my wife took the booth seat and I took the chair across from her. The seating area was very nice. We were promptly greeted by our server, who was super charming and knowledgeable about the menu. The wine list was very impressive, and I ordered a very delicious cabernet, which the server brought out promptly. For starters, we ordered the flounder and rice, liver pate, bibb lettuce and gnocchi. After our orders were placed, the server brought us delicious and fresh sourdough bread with amazing house made butter. It was an great start. The flounder and pate were served first. The pate was one of the best I ever had. It was so flavorful with a very smooth texture. It was perfect with the toast that comes with the dish. I could have eaten the pate for my dinner. It was incredible. The bibb lettuce and gnocchi came out second, and what a pairing! The bibb lettuce was so fresh and tasty, and went perfectly with the gnocchi. The gnocchi was one of the best I ever had. I could not get over how airy and soft the gnocchis were. The gnocchi was my wife's favorite out of everything we ordered that night. The flounder and rice was good, but was our least favorite. The flounder was super fresh, and was lightly seasoned to allow for the flavors of the fish and rice to speak for themselves. But, it was topped with crushed popcorn, which we would have preferred to have been left out. For dinner, I ordered the fish stew, which is a staple at FIG. My wife ordered the clam dish with corn and sausage. The entrees were served after a short break following the appetizers, which we needed. Both of us very much enjoyed our entrees. The stew was loaded with seafood and had great flavor. I tasted my wife's clam dish and it was packed with flavor! The clams were perfectly matched with delicious corn and sausage. Everything was cooked to perfection. We were so full after dinner, but it my wife's birthday so we had to get dessert. The server recommended the strawberry ice cream, and I am glad he did. That was one of the best things we had that dinner. The ice cream was so fresh and tasted creamy and delicious. It was really a perfect dessert. I am so grateful that FIG made my wife's birthday so perfect. We spent four days in Charleston, and ate at a lot of different places, and FIG was the best restaurant we tried in Charleston. Do whatever you can to eat here! They take reservations online three weeks ahead of time (starting at 10:00 am est), and tables sell out within minutes. Party of 3; midweek chicks out for a birthday dinner. Expectations were high. and met! We were able to get a reservation - finally - first seating at 5PM. Menu changes so check it out online but it may differ by the time you land a reservation. For starters, we had the ricotta gnocchi alla bolognese - delicious. Now, strangely enough we all thought that the sauce tasted like old school Chef Boyardee - but somehow this only added to the dish! Gnocchi was perfect. Also ordered the Oysters broiled with smoked pimenton butter. These were 'the best I have ever had" according to the two oyster-eaters. For mains, one had the triggerfish w/ chicory salad (word on the street is to order the triger fish if its on the menu - super white, light, sweet fish); one had the sea bass (don't recall how this was prepared); and I went straight out of my comfort zone and had the bouillabaisse. OMGoodness, it was wonderful. NOT tomato based, in a light broth, grouper, shrimp, so so so good. Generous portion and I am dreaming about it still. Order this. Now, this is a place without salt and pepper on the table; you will not be served bread and butter. This is specific, food-driven, chef-driven dining. For dessert we shared the most excellent lime cream puffs (I can never eat just a key lime pie again!) and the chocolate budino- don't let the name intimidate you. This little glass pot fell directly out of heaven to the table. It took all I had not to run my finger around the dish! With a cocktail, starter, main, and dessert this will run you about $100 per person before tip. Worth every penny. Service is 'stiff' but efficient. Not there to engage, just to serve. Honestly I had begun to doubt the hub bub about Charleston food - I mean you can only take shrimp and grits so far. But this adventure restored my faith. 5 stars. read more

My friend and I walked in right at 5 on a Saturday and of course there was a line already. We ended up having a cocktail while waiting for a spot to open up at the bar area. While we weren't even hungry to begin with we ended up ordering the tartare, pate, ravioli and the gnocchi to share. The pate was the perfect appetizer. The photo really doesn't do it justice. Out of the pasta dishes, the ravioli was easily the best. It was amazing! Pieces of shrimp with delicate raviolis in the most amazing sauce topped with some toasted breadcrumbs for a little crunch. Every time we travel to Charleston we can not pass up a meal at FIG. Unfortunately, this restaurant is so popular that I never get a reservation before 9pm. We started with two small dishes to share. The gnocchis melted in my mouth. They were nice and fluffy. The beef tartare was very interesting because instead of serving it with crackers, we had a unique crispy thin potato skin. I had the snapper and it didn't disappoint me. Lastly, my husband had the bouillabaisse. He loved the fresh seafood and the broth was rich but flavorful. We were lucky enough to snag a dinner reservation here while on holiday in Charleston and it was amazing. A small restaurant that is very low key in its appearance, Fig is truly a perfect representation of a place that brings local ingredients to the forefront. We ordered the shrimp soup dish (sorry can't recall the name) and it's hands down one of my most favorite dishes of that nature. All the five star reviews are true, this place is really something special and I'm glad I came across it when doing my research on Charleston prior to my trip (honestly it would have been more surprising if I hadn't come across it given its popularity). Our waitress Corinne was so knowledgeable of all the food on the menu - we had lots of questions - and knew when to come by. To start, I ordered a glass of wine, while my mom ordered the Snowbird cocktail because our waitress likened it to a winter mai tai. She loved it and it made me wish I had ordered it. For our starter, we ordered the chicken liver pate. It's been on the menu for 20 years for good reason. The cute carrots and pickles with the bread and the pate were so yummy. For the main, I ordered the chicken Al mattone, which was a perfectly cooked chicken with pine nuts and the most delightful pesto that was the exact opposite of what you'd find in the grocery store. My mom ordered the roasted golden tilefish, but because they were out of the tilefish it was roasted golden triggerfish instead. We both ate every bite. FIG is an establishment run by professionals and you feel that prominently through the whole dining experience. I would love to come back if/when I return to Charleston. Fig was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had! We went there on our honeymoon and were blown away. Note - if you want to snag a reservation to fig between 6 and 8/830, you have to plan to log in right at noon exactly 4 weeks before - we got a 5:45 reservation when I logged in at 12:06. It's a popular joint and deservedly so! We were served by Moss (sorry if I spelled your name wrong!) for the evening and he was wonderful a helpful, knowledgeable, and helped us make our selections for the evening! Everything was delicious, but the highlight of the evening was the Wagyu Beef entree. Oh my goodness, it sent chills down our spine. DO NOT MISS IT! We also got the wreckfish, the wahoo crudo, and the beef tartare. For dessert we got their homemade Strawberry frozen yogurt with olive oil cake and it was the perfect cap to the evening. Finally, in an epically classy move, when we told them it was our honeymoon before leaving, they gave us a menu signed by the staff! We came to Charleston for the first time for vacation and Fig was definitely our favorite restaurant experience! All the food had such great flavors and you can tell the ingredients were fresh! The ricotta gnocchi were some of the biggest fluffiest gnocchis I've ever had- so delicious! We also got the roasted eggplant and cottage cheese as an appetizer which came with amazing brown rye bread, the olive oil was also delicious. My fiancé had the pork schnitzel with heirloom tomatoes which had a very tasty cream sauce. The tomatoes and capers provided a good contrast with the pork and cream sauce. I had the wreckfish with sweet corn- you can't go wrong with seafood in Charleston but the fish was cooked perfectly and the corn was super yummy and sweet. We ended up being too full for dessert but if we are ever in Charleston again I would love to come back to Fig (their menu changes daily). read more

We had dinner reservations late on a Tuesday night to celebrate my friend's birthday. Dressing for dinner was fun - it had been a while. Our table was ready when we arrived and I loved the atmosphere. Elegant. Classy. We started with the chicken liver pâté, pickles, dijon, and brioche. Food is Good is what FIG stands for - and when we walked out of the restaurant, my mom said, "But not great." Our server was very welcoming and patient, so that was nice. We started with crusty bread and salted butter. We asked a lot of questions about the menu, to make sure we knew of "hidden pork products" not listed on the menu. The menu was more heavily seafood-based which was a nice surprise. For starters, I had the crudo of beeliner snapper with popped sorghum, and my mom got the ricotta gnocchi but "vegetarian style" which was cacio e pepe rather than bolognese (which had pancetta). Her gnocchi were delicate pillows because they had no potato in them, and very flavorful. I enjoyed my crudo very much. Our server recommended to my mom the grouper and to me the mustard crusted fish, which was listed as cobia but was actually amberjack. She made sure to tell me the chef thought "no one would know the difference unless they are a fish connoisseur" which is a strange thing to say to people. I do know the difference though, but was fine with amberjack. My fish was served with whipped potatoes which reminded me of the potatoes at Robouchon. My mom's fish was overcooked and lacked seasoning. It was very acidic with the apple cider butter. My fish was lukewarm, and the brown butter jus tasted heavily like Worcestershire sauce. Among the capers with bits of lemon flesh which was kind of weird. I did not finish my dish. We opted to skip dessert. The service was fine and the starters were good, but the entrees were disappointing. These reservations were very difficult to get (must login 28 days in advance at 10 AM Eastern time and they were booked up within a minute) so I suppose for that trouble, it was not exactly worth the effort. Very modern place, I would say too much so given that it is in such a historic city. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful and guided us through the menu. Appetizers were stellar. Lamb tartar, WOW! Mild flavor very nicely seasoned, lots of subtle flavors in there. Snapper, a little bit different from their sister restaurant The Ordinary, but equally as good. Liked the crispy rice in there as well. Steak entree could have been more tender, but was flavorful. We had our last meal while visiting Charleston at this wonderful restaurant. FIG is the sister restaurant to The Ordinary, we wouldn't had known this except our server when he greeted us inquired about our dining experience at the other restaurant. To say the service at FIG was excellent is an understatement, they really went above and beyond. We had several dishes during our meal. We started off with the flounder rice bowl which was their version of a poke bowl except some much better. The play on textures in this dish was outstanding with the popped sorghum adding the perfect crunch. We also tried the sautéed wreckfish with sweet corn coulis and the lowcountry bourride, both were fantastic. I can honestly say that Carolina gold rice has become one of my favorite rice varieties. Lastly we ended our meal with a wonderful apple szarlotka which is a Polish apple pie. It was to die for! Perfectly warm and sweet which was balanced well with the frozen Greek yogurt. Fig was recommended to us as the "nicest restaurant" in Charleston. So we waited twenty-eight days for the first available table. Upon arrival, we ordered nearly everything on the menu. Nothing was terrible, and most things were OK. The Coddled Egg is hands down the best thing on the menu, and it's not even on the menu... You must request it, and the chef must approve your request. Preparations are highly competent, but course after course, I felt like I was eating regular food at a decent restaurant. The Gnocchi bolognese was rich and full of cheese, not full of flavors from good pasta or tomatoes. The bread had a soft crust from sitting, not full of flavor. The wine was OK at a very high price point--low value on the list. Service was lacking at the hostess station, and it was excellent at the table. We went on to eat here five more times over the summer, each time being less impressive than the last. We ordered the coddled egg in large portions every time, and they resented us for it...so much so that on our previous visit, we waited over an hour for the food to hit the table. During our wait, we finished four bottles of wine and made ourselves properly drunk. Good times. OK, restaurant. read more

Food: amazing. Great combinations of flavors. What brought it all together is the Sommelier, not the waitress. Service: the waitress we had made us feel like we were beneath her to spend the time explaining why she recommended a specific menu item, vs. just order this, everyone likes it. Listening to the waiter next to us, we drew the short straw. Very unfortunate when you spend $500 on a meal and walk away feeling like the food was great, the Sommelier was great (and made better food recommendations than the waitress). Waitress did not order everything we asked for and blew us off when we asked about the missing item. The service felt was below the quality of the food we were served. Very unfortunate. Spoke to the manager, but not sure anything will change. Go for the food and hope you get a server that makes you feel welcome. It'd been years since we had been to FIG... we all had fond memories. However, the experience didn't live up to the previous 5-star memories. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good. Just when you have it to compare to the rest of the culinary scene in Charleston, it just isn't the highest level anymore. I would avoid the Chicken Meatball appetizer at all cost. The mix of flavors was very off-putting and didn't get the meal off to a good start. The burnt eggplant and cottage cheese lacked flavor and the Carolina rice bowl also didn't deliver from a flavor perspective. Mains were a bit better. Honestly, the most impressive part of our evening was the waiter identifying that one of the members of our table would prefer a vegetarian option and then worked with the kitchen to make her a combination of the best veggies from across the menu. The grilled Wahoo & Pork Milanese were easiest the best mains on the table. Unique mix of flavors and textures with the Wahoo, but made for an excellent bite. One person at the table got the steak... which i would not recommend. Very ordinary and needed an ample amount of salut to get some real flavor. The service continues to be solid at FIG. It's a very good dinner spot in Charleston still, but may be living off it's name/reputation rather than making enhancements to its cuisine. read more
