    Cozy Diner

Faros is a diamond in the rough. Kensington isn't known as an able-bodied area of the Brooklyn borough that is robust in it's sit down restaurants. Faros, however has become one of my regulars spots when I'm looking for a cheap eats in a cozy dinner atmosphere minus the greasy spoon savor. Breakfast is amazing here, from the overflowing apple cinnamon pancakes to the Greek omelet well equipped with enough meat to give you a heart attack ~ Faros is the community breakfast nook. That and no matter what you order, food for two will never be above $15.

Faros....ugh... Church Avenue restaurants really need to step up their game. This Diner completely choked my desire to support local businesses in the neighborhood. You will walk in and it will be packed and you will feel confident that you've made a good decision, picked a good diner, but don't be fooled. This place fails because it does too many things wrong that are so easy to get right. First, once your customers are seated, immediately bring the menus. We sat for 15 minutes, wondering if anyone knew that we were there. The waitress that takes your order should not also be organizing the glassware and bussing her own tables. Obviously, you are understaffed. We sat for almost an hour before we received any food and were entertained by watching all of the people that walked in after us eat their meals. Who runs this kitchen? Shouldn't the ticket orders be fired in order? It seems like the grill cooks were picking and choosing the meals that they wanted to prepare by what they thought would be fun? Pancakes and eggs should not take 50 minutes. How do you run out of coffee? I ordered two sunny side up eggs with a side of rice and beans, thinking that Spanish owners would not dare put rice and beans on the menu if they could not do them right. Bland, flavorless fail. Do not put rice and beans on the menu and then serve beans that were canned, rinsed, warmed, and then thrown on my plate. No tomato sauce, no herbs, no onions, no garlic, no oil, no salt, no flavor at all. The gravy of the beans was the leftover preservative syrup from the can... I kid you not. Needless to say, as a self-respecting Puerto Rican, I did not eat them. You will see the waiters and waitresses running around in a chaotic whirlwind and think, wow, they hustle! But... It's just part of the systemic disorganization in this restaurant. They are running passed you, not noticing that you have no coffee, have no food, have been trying to get their attention for 35 minutes. We left angry and hungry, never to return.

This spot was the closest to my air bnb recently so that's what brought me here. Nothing bad to say at all. The food was fast and good and reasonable priced. I think this is a family owned spot and they offer delivery as well. The waitress was friendly and have no problems to report.

I was looking for a hole in a wall area and came up to this restaurant, very nice mom and pop mini restaurant near the F train in a forgotten place in Brooklyn, very nice diverse neighborhood. I order a breakfast special with coffee, I had spicy sausage with home fries, white bread and coffee with my coke on the side,The breakfast was very good and taste freshly cooked, the portion was very decent enough to to fill my appetite. The waitress was very friendly and helpful she was also bilingual, which is important due to the different cultures. Check it out, take the Iron Horse F train to Brooklyn.

Me and my boyfriend are regulars here and we come in about once a week for breakfast and/or lunch. To put it simply I always have cravings for one of their dishes. Their plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries with spicy sausage on the side are one of my favorites. Another one of my favorites is their burger (medium well) with curly fries. The employees here are super sweet and always ready to take care of anything you need. Trust me it is so worth trying this place out. It has now turned into tradition.

Or maybe I should say WHO?…read moreAre you gonna get the doughy guy at the door who takes 15 mins to amble over to the host stand who can't seem to figure out how to seat you (even with a reservation?) Or are you going to get the professorial woman who acts like she could rescue Apollo 13 while mixing a dry martini while reading Joan Didion? Are you gonna get an airy twink as a server who wants to go back to Bushwick and lets you know that at every second, or are you going to get a serious experience with a focused, professional server. Ya never know. This used to be part of the charm, but now it's a liability because friends (and other chefs in the neighborhood) never want to go to Diner because...ya never know what it'll be. Diner has never coasted on continuity. They change up the menu every day. They write it on the paper tablecloth, for Chrissakes. But I still love that! I still find most of the food to be delicious (if pricey), I still think their cocktails are well-made (even if their bar is weirdly slow) and I love their brunch and I love the vibe, and I'm glad it's still here. Their Caesar salad is overrated, as is the burger, but they're always mixing it up. You could get lucky. Ya never know...

Cozy interior, but the concept seemed like...trying too hard to be different and hip...? Why do you make your waiters write down the menu on the table for each group of guests? Doesnt even save paper since those menus are not reused. And honestly, our waiter's handwriting was sometimes hard to read. Also, quite pricey. The crab pasta was $35, the celery root was also $35 (like what?!), the squash was $23, and the Caesar salad (not pictured) was $22. Service was friendly and knowledgeable on the food but slow.

But if you're looking for some excellent, straight forward, wonderfully crafted simplicity, this is in your wheelhouse. A quesadilla is a quesadilla, a hamburger a hamburger. Sounds boring? Not when your hamburger and quesadilla are amongst the best you've ever had at any diner, anywhere. Our waitress was very nice and allowed us to dine, unbothered. We ordered a fresh fruit platter for dessert. It included watermelon, mango, grapes, apples, strawberries, etc. very nice, well presented. The dining area certainly belies what happens in that kitchen behind the door. I'll be back to try some more simple, but excellent food.

This spot has a handful of tables and while we were there, quite a few to-go orders were picked up as well. Though we were the only diners, so I assume it's more of a breakfast/brunch spot. The menu is rather expansive with options from breakfast to lunch and dinner. After studying the menu, we opted for the Veggie Burger and the Meatball Parm Po'Boy. Our food was ready in about 20 minutes, which seemed a little long as we were the only diners, but we were not in a rush so it was fine. As the restaurant was unassuming, I honestly had pretty low expectations, but we both really enjoyed our meals. It was definitely large portions and really flavorful. My fiance said the Meatball Parm Po'Boy was delicious and I appreciated that the veggie burger seemed to be made in house as it was falling apart (in a good way) and you could distinguish some of the veggies. I ended up only eating about half of my burger and took the rest for lunch the next day and it held up well.

The mix of a thousand island type sauce with ketchup made this burger a 10/10. The sesame bun gives the burger a great softness with all the other textures. + the fries gave me the feeling of an elevated mcdonald's fry! caesar salad was perfect. Lots of lettuce, not overly anchovy and just the croutons were soft and crisp at the same time? very much enjoyed how big of a portions all of these items were. chicken parm sauce was tangy and had good flavoring with the perfect melted cheese on top of the soft but crisp edges of the chicken. i'd highly recc all three items we got! service was quick once we got seated and was nice to be outside in the warm weather.

While they have all the traditional breakfast fare, I was so happy to see it also had a Caribbean twist to it. I couldn't help myself--I had to order rice and beans with pernil (pork shoulder) and a side of sweet plantains. Of course, I wanted some actual breakfast items, so we got the French toast loaded with fruit. We also got both the tres and quatro golpes, which is a traditional Dominican breakfast. Lastly, we got a Caribbean omelet. My rice and pernil was solid. The rice could've used a tad bit more seasoning but when mixed with the side of beans and plantains plus a drizzle of hot sauce it was perfect. They had a variety of sauces--Tabasco (my fave), a Jamaican one that was super spicy, and a mild homemade one. The tres/quatro golpes was also a hearty choice with mangu (mashed plantain), sausage, fried cheese, and eggs. The pickled red onion balanced everything out. The fried cheese is similar to a halloumi but I think it's a bit more flavorful. All the flavors just melt together in your mouth perfectly. The French toast and omelet were good. I'd say the Caribbean items stole the show though. The place has a typical diner vibe and is on the small side. Food was served quickly and service was good. Discount if you pay in cash. I will be coming back to try their Cuban!!

Apparently there is more than one location in Manhattan. The inside reminded me of a classic diner. Comfy and with a pretty cool vibe. We all slid into a booth and looked over the seasonal offerings along with their standard menu. I was lured by the chicken Kyiv based on the picture of having two rolled up chicken cutlets stuffed with dill and other yumminess, but was a bit disappointment when it arrived with a single small cutlet on my plate with two heaping mounds of potatoes mash and broccoli. I instantly had regret when I should have gotten the borscht soup with pierogies, but wanted to try something I wouldn't usually. I should've stuck to what was safe. My work mom got the stuffed cabbage and that was a clear homerun- really loved the mushroom gravy that it came with. My other colleague got the potato pancake and wasn't too thrilled with it, while my boss got the two Swedish meatballs that he described to be Ikea worthy. Although this was my first time here, I can't say that anyone really loved the food nor would come out of their way to come back. I really was hoping this would have wow-ed me in some way, but I guess I'll stick to what's familiar.

A friend and I each got a soup to start our meal, along with sharing a Potato Pancake. The Matzoh Ball Soup and Potato Pancake were good, but not great. However, I enjoyed the Pork & Cabbage Soup enough to take home a quart. For entree, we shared a Deluxe Meat Plate that was quite delicious. All three pierogi flavors were great, but the short rib was my favorite, followed closely by the mushroom & sauerkraut. I also really enjoyed the grilled kielbasa, but sadly it was served at room temperature. Lastly, the stuffed cabbage is not usually my thing, yet I liked this version. Once again, it was served barely warm. Thankfully, we finished on a high note. My friend really wanted the Challah Bread Pudding, which was moist and tasty. However, the lovely waitress advised us strongly to try the Medovyk. This Ukrainian layered honey cake had a wonderful texture, not too creamy or sweet, with a great walnut flavor. We were extremely happy with her suggestion. We also really liked the diner vibes that felt warm and inviting. This was so close to a five star review. The main reason for the deduction was the temperature of our food being served. Hopefully that problem will be solved on my next visit.
