Cool Greek based spot to drop in and grab food. Never crowded but there is a steady stream of customers since it is in close proximity to a bus stop. The food is simple and serves it's purpose. They always have a grade A health rating. The black and white uniformed staff is welcoming and are not pushy. The utensils are clean and the coffee is bottomless. My only gripe is that they use margarine instead of butter. I tend to come here alone, grab a seat facing the window and people watch. They serve a variety of muffins, bagels, French toast, and eggs etc for breakfast, everything is always good and I only leave something back if I'm full. I really do like this Greek restaurant for a couple of reason but I feel like the experience here can be improved in a few areas. First one of the most important things about this place is the food is (mostly) hearty and good. If I have time in the morning I love coming here for a breakfast platter and some coffee. They don't server things like Belgian Waffle platters or anything but with the breakfast sides you can get a waffle, bacon and some eggs for a 10-12 dollar meal. The food is normally cooked good and the waffles are fluffy but sometimes if you just get the regular bacon it can come out too crispy and not worth the money they charge for it. Again though I really do like the waffles and pancakes here, and their lunch items are usually made good. One of the worst things about this place is the crowds. On certain days (especially Saturdays) this place can be packed and it really affects how long you have to wait to get your food. Seating has never been an issue for me even when I have come here with family and its been crowded so that is good. Service wise is only OK. They have this bad habit if you sit at the counter of not giving you your menu for a while. At times I have had to raise my hand ask for one after a certain while which is quite annoying. I get the feeling the quality of the service drops when it gets crowded, as you can see the list of orders piling up over the kitchen window. The staff is somewhat friendly and nice but nothing to rave about. The older lady that works here and takes your payments is always smiling. Speaking of payments this place is cash only which honestly is a make or break for me sometimes for coming here. With how popular this place is I don't see why it would cost them too much to offer credit card/debit card as an option. I guess the owner is just traditional or something. I do like this place but it leaves much to be desired. Faros is a diamond in the rough. Kensington isn't known as an able-bodied area of the Brooklyn borough that is robust in it's sit down restaurants. Faros, however has become one of my regulars spots when I'm looking for a cheap eats in a cozy dinner atmosphere minus the greasy spoon savor. Breakfast is amazing here, from the overflowing apple cinnamon pancakes to the Greek omelet well equipped with enough meat to give you a heart attack ~ Faros is the community breakfast nook. Faros....ugh... Church Avenue restaurants really need to step up their game. This Diner completely choked my desire to support local businesses in the neighborhood. You will walk in and it will be packed and you will feel confident that you've made a good decision, picked a good diner, but don't be fooled. This place fails because it does too many things wrong that are so easy to get right. First, once your customers are seated, immediately bring the menus. We sat for 15 minutes, wondering if anyone knew that we were there. The waitress that takes your order should not also be organizing the glassware and bussing her own tables. Obviously, you are understaffed. We sat for almost an hour before we received any food and were entertained by watching all of the people that walked in after us eat their meals. Who runs this kitchen? Shouldn't the ticket orders be fired in order? It seems like the grill cooks were picking and choosing the meals that they wanted to prepare by what they thought would be fun? Pancakes and eggs should not take 50 minutes. How do you run out of coffee? I ordered two sunny side up eggs with a side of rice and beans, thinking that Spanish owners would not dare put rice and beans on the menu if they could not do them right. Bland, flavorless fail. Do not put rice and beans on the menu and then serve beans that were canned, rinsed, warmed, and then thrown on my plate. No tomato sauce, no herbs, no onions, no garlic, no oil, no salt, no flavor at all. The gravy of the beans was the leftover preservative syrup from the can... I kid you not. Needless to say, as a self-respecting Puerto Rican, I did not eat them. You will see the waiters and waitresses running around in a chaotic whirlwind and think, wow, they hustle! But... It's just part of the systemic disorganization in this restaurant. They are running passed you, not noticing that you have no coffee, have no food, have been trying to get their attention for 35 minutes. We left angry and hungry, never to return. read more

Up until today, I would have recommended Faros as I use their delivery most of the time when I want a meal I can rely on. But today's order and the last one has made me think very differently! It took more than 10 mins. for my order to be taken, they kept putting the phone down. I gave them my order, repeated it twice and what was delivered wasn't it. I called back and they left the phone on the counter without picking it up. When I called again and finally got someone, she said that 'next time...' I told her that there will not be a next time. I was looking for a hole in a wall area and came up to this restaurant, very nice mom and pop mini restaurant near the F train in a forgotten place in Brooklyn, very nice diverse neighborhood. I order a breakfast special with coffee, I had spicy sausage with home fries, white bread and coffee with my coke on the side,The breakfast was very good and taste freshly cooked, the portion was very decent enough to to fill my appetite. Me and my boyfriend are regulars here and we come in about once a week for breakfast and/or lunch. To put it simply I always have cravings for one of their dishes. Their plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries with spicy sausage on the side are one of my favorites. Another one of my favorites is their burger (medium well) with curly fries. Came here on a Tuesday @6pm we figured they have pretty good reviews and we were in the mood for pancakes. Welllllll allow me to tell you.......this place is absolutely disgusting! Where do I begin... The pancakes came out burnt. They were yellow inside, cooked, but yellow. Which only leads me to believe the batter was very very old. They had an egg taste to them and they gave us cold syrup straight out of the fridge. Secondly. My husband ordered a bacon and cheese omelet. The bacon was raw! From the package to the omelet. No kidding. We mentioned it to the waitress who told the cook he has to cook the bacon first. It's a shame when your waitress is telling the cook how to cook. As for the service. Mediocre. Super good basic diner food. It's one of only a handful of places to go in the neighborhood if you're not into ethnic food. Nothing fancy, just solid basics, done well. Most diners are greasy spoons with limp, bland food that only tastes good if you're nursing a serious hangover. The food at Faros is just nice and normal. While the majority of diners use processed cheese inside their omelettes - which means it congeals into plastic when it's warmed - Faros is the only diner I've found in NYC that uses real cheese. Thank you!! Gotta give a shout out for their triple decker turkey sandwich. The turkey is good quality, bacon is crisp, and I think I've even spotted some spinach in with the lettuce a few times. I was so happy just to find something by the time I got to Faros that I was already prepared to throw them three stars just for existing. Once the gloom of the cold, rainy day and the fact that I was aimlessly wandering around looking for my landlord's shady leasing office wore off, I began to see that Faros was actually a very cozy, inviting spot. Its a city diner without the grit, it has a very family feel to it and you can tell the place is well-maintained and loved by the owner(s). There were a few customers, most of whom seemed to be regulars, when I arrived and the waitress at the counter -Jackie- was extremely nice and attentive. She chatted with the regulars and was polite to me, she also extended extra patience to a regular you could tell everyone else thought was a total weirdo. I ordered the turkey burger, but somehow they were out. Instead of just saying "tough what else do ya want" they offered to make me a chicken burger. My impromptu chicken burger was delicious, as were the fries that I attempted but failed to avoid (fries are bad for you ya'll, public service announcement!). The prices are a little high for a diner, most sandwiches are around $4 but any kind of meal (aka getting lettuce, tomato on your burger and a side) is $6.50 and up. I was really excited to finally find a plain old diner like Faro's in the Windsor Terrace/Kensington area. I've been dying for a good old fashioned plate of home fries, eggs, and toast since moving to Brooklyn- and Faro's delivered! It's a bit hard to find amongst the numerous Indian restaurants and bakeries, but when you walk in, you know right away this is a Greek diner. The food wasn't anything extraordinary, but the prices are fantastic. My breakfast platter with two eggs, corned beef hash, hash browns, toast, coffee, AND a small glass of OJ came under $10. tiny update: Ordered the reuben here this morning. It was enormous. I can't believe i ate it all. It was served with potato salad, the portion of which was equally enormous, and a pickle and little container of cole slaw (not so great). My roommate got the italian wrap (chicken parm in a wrap) which sounded completely unappealing to me, but he said it was great. He asked for a side of marinara sauce and was brought a large bowl and no additional charge. The omelette our buddy got was quite large, but also quite pricey at $8 (more than my insanely large reuben or my roommate's wrap) for just mushrooms and cheese. I called in once and there was an issue with the connection where we weren't able to hear each other, so I called again with no response. I get a phone call 15 seconds later from them with the hostess YELLING at me saying "you people" keep calling and not saying anything in the phone and how's she's busy and she doesn't have time for this... When I answered 'I called once and might have been an issue with the service', she continues to disrespectfully conversate and notate how busy she is and how annoyed she is at me.... I like Faros very much. It's a good local diner. The waitresses are friendly, the food is pretty good, the prices are moderate (maybe a little too much), and the decor is cheery. The donuts are large and delicious. Downsides are the booths - the person on the other side of you can barely move without making the whole booth move. They need to nail those things down. And once I saw the cook make an egg white omelette and to take the yolk out, he stuck his bare (ungloved) hand in the dish and scooped it out. Uh, hold the arm hair, please. Other huge turn off is the 2-cup limit on coffee -- come on!! It's not like I am going to sit there and drink the place dry. And they really need to change the dopey Z100 music. Coming to Faros means two things: you will get to choose from a wide variety of delicious menu items and as a result, eat well but just understand that you will also be receiving below average service. There are certain places that I will never go back and this is one of them. After such a poor experience, I've had it with Faros. Before the remodeling about 5 years ago, the place was disgusting. The tables were sticky and the cutlery were dirty. There were constant mosquitos flying above me while I try to enjoy my food. After the renovation, the place looked very decent and comfortable for the average diner. OK, my bf and I decided to order a triple decker with fries and I decided to order a grilled chicken sandwich. The wait staff screwed up my order and added two orders of fries when I requested only one. I said it's fine and I would pay for the two orders of fries. Then I get my bill and it is about $20.00 for two sandwiches with fries. I was completely outraged and I asked them about the extra charges. They said they charged me for lettuce and tomatoes and the whole nine. I order the basic fare and they decided to slap extras on it thinking I would not notice. I don't think so. Then they told me the menu is new and they didn't know how much the sandwich was supposed to cost. Nonetheless, you do not do that to a customer. This is a diner owned by Greeks, not a cuchifritos place. They're trying to appeal to the masses and I guess people will shoot down whoever for whatever. Get an omelette.. Get a burger... But for heavens sakes do not order a rice and beans. They're not known for that, that's not what it's for. They have tasty breakfasts and sandwiches.. One of the better places to eat if you're in the Kensington area. The food is solid American-Greek diner fare. They do a superb job with breakfast, which is served all day. Eggs are always fresh and perfectly cooked (the omelettes are popular, but I prefer my eggs sunny side up). Pancakes are big and fluffy and can be served plain with some butter and syrup, or overflowing with delicious fruit. The bacon is on the crisp rather than chewy side, but I like it that way. Minor criticism: the waiters will (inexplicably) ask you if you'd like french fries, yellow rice, or mashed potato with your breakfast special (???). Ignore these weird choices, and ask for hash browns or corned beef hash, both of which are righteous, on the side. Also, if you like your toast crispy and brown, make sure you specify that, otherwise you tend to get some very lightly toasted bread. Make sure to order a big ol' glass of fresh squeezed OJ with your breakfast or brunch. It is delicious, and actually fresh squeezed when you place your order. The lunch selections include your standard burgers, Reubens, salads, and tuna melts, and they're solid. The fries are crispy, the rye bread is very good, and the coleslaw and pickles are toothsome. I haven't tried the dinner entrees, although they look inviting (choices include roast chicken with yellow rice, london broil, meatloaf, salmon, etc.) Service is extremely attentive and friendly, and the prices are about half what I'm used to paying in New York for a sit-down meal. Eight bucks buys you a hearty brunch or lunch, and that's a great value in my book. My only gripe is that it can get a little stuffy in the summer time - they should really install a powerful AC unit. Although not having good AC probably helps to keep the costs (and prices) low, so I'm not sure that would be such a great improvement. Also, if they served beer - even bottled beer - this place would be just about perfect. When you think of Greek food and the fresh fare from the Mediterranean, don't expect any here! Faros seems like a cute neighborhood joint at first, but don't be fooled. Immediately the maitre d' was snippy and that set the tone for a really awful meal. I ordered a salad, the lettuce looked old-nothing, special to it. The spanakopita (spinach pie) was really dry. My friend's lamb looked like worn down shoe-leather. Even the desert was nasty and inedible. A Greek standard desert, yogurt with sour cherries, had not an iota of creaminess to it. It honestly it had a musty smell. My stomach blew up with gas before I could leave the restaurant... The saving grace was the zucchini boat and the one kind waiter, he's the youngish blond one, as well as the kind man busing tables. The others are arrogant. read more

Your typical neighborhood diner, catering to your hangover and non-hangover needs. For me, those needs are usually met by the same combination of omelettes, hashbrowns, toast and a lot of coffee. The spicy sausage omelette combo is my favorite. There's usually no wait, though it does get packed. I can't vouch for the non-breakfast items but I would imagine they're just as greasy and delicious. The prices aren't too bad..about 9 bucks for the combo mentioned above. First and foremost, I love this diner, I love eating here. The waitress is always on point and it's always a good dining experience. The food is also always good and I've made it my new breakfast spot since it's so close to home. My only negative comment is the phone receptionist. Whenever I place an order for delivery, she can never get my address correct. Twice she has sent the delivery person to the wrong address even after having the name of the street spelled out to her and repeated THREE times! I would really like to give Faros a 5 star rating, but the constant inconvenience is really offputting. It's not the delivery person's fault for being late, he did the best he could with inadequate information.
