3.5 stars. I'm a fan of this place. I usually shy away from Italian food in the US as Italy has totally ruined me, but I agreed to go because my friend really wanted to go.
I thought the food here was decent. I mean, it was really good for Italian food in the US, but it's really nothing compared to Italian food in Italy.
When I walked in, it reminded me of places in Italy, where they'd keep antipasti at the bar in ginormous plates. When you order, your server just plates the antipasto for you. I thought they were a real standout - we had octopus with beans, cauliflower, and something made with eggplant and zucchini. I think it was a caponata. It was all really delicious. I LOVED EVERY SINGLE ONE. We also ate some greens and salumi (wagyu and venison), and those things were really yummy as well. Oh and some rabbit liver mousse when we were waiting at the bar. My friends and I agreed we could all eat a pitcher of that stuff.
For entrees, we ordered 2 kinds of pizza, both with red sauce. One was kinda like pepperoni pizza, but I'm not sure it was actually pepperoni. That pizza was decent. The second pizza was a vege pizza with squash, burrata, and some really yummy tomatoes. That second pizza was amazing. I generally eat gluten free/carb free/sugar fee but I have a cheat meal maybe once a week or every 2 weeks or so. I often regret the foods I eat on these cheat meals as they are not worth the bloat, but I really enjoyed that second pizza. It was worth it. The first pizza - not so much. But that may be a preference. I generally love meat, but for some reason, I tend to like vegetarian pizzas better. Or at least I prefer them to pepperoni type pizzas, which in my opinion often taste too heavy and smoky.
I should mention though that the pizzas were technically good, in my opinion. In the sense that the preparation was very well done. The crust was thin, which is how I like my pizza. It's a little crispy on the bottom but otherwise light and fluffy. There's a perfect amount of sauce. (no soupy soggy mess as in 2 Amy's). I think what makes the pizza not absolutely sublime for me is that the ingredients are simply not on par with ingredients in Italy.
Oh and we ate stuffed pasta with duck ragu. ( I think it was duck ragu). That was average, and it was kinda heavy. Like an average bolognese (mine is a lot better). I mean, I love bolognese, but I like bolognese brightened a bit. I know that's kinda hard to understand, and I don't even know how you brighten something up. I just know it when I eat it. My guess is that they don't use fresh good tomatoes on their sauce and maybe they use dried herbs. All speculation on my part.
We finished with affogatos; those were pretty good but teeny tiny. By teeny tiny - I mean - midget sized. Like 8 year old girl playing afternoon tea midget sized. I guess I'm used to larger portions of affogato from Pitango.
Service is friendly, but prices are sky high. I'm used to spending a ton of money on food in DC, but Etto's prices really took me aback. Our special vegetarian pizza was $23; the squid antipasto was $13. Most glasses of wine were in the $12-15 range. The salumi set us back $11 or $13; I don't remember. Usually when you get charcuterie from a restaurant, you get accompanying stuff like tiny pickles or savory jams. At this place, all you got was literally the cut up meat, served on a boring white plate. Beers were around $8-9, but the portions were half pints, if I remember correctly. The cocktails were pretty good though - I've recently become good friends with a top bartender in DC so I've learned a lot about old school cocktails. Like the stuff they serve at Columbia Room and Rose's Luxury. I generally don't like cocktails, but I liked Etto's because they were refreshing, tasty and not sweet. I don't like sweet cocktails - and yes, I judge, but I think that people who drink sweet cocktails have the emotional maturity and sophistication of a 5 year old, living in a town with 2 traffic stops and nothing but a walmart.
All in all, I would come back, but maybe only during happy hour, if they even have happy hour. And definitely only for the antipasti. This place would get 4 stars, if not for the prices. read more
