I've driven by Emerald City Fish & Chips a few times now and remember reading about how good this place is so when we needed lunch and were nearby, I remembered this place and stopped in. We shared a 3 piece cod and chips and a large chowder. It's nice they give a senior discount when you are over 60 (yikes!). The service was quick and friendly and we got our food quickly. The fish is cooked up perfectly with a golden crust and was delicious. They serve it with their house tartar sauce and a very small side of coleslaw. The chowder was very hearty and tasty as well. Everything here was good and, even though seating inside is limited, they had a few outdoor tables which helped. We at outside and another group joined us and we made friends with them. Bonus. This is a simple counter but with a steady stream of local customers. We enjoyed the piping hot and fresh fish and chips! It definitely made to order and I appreciated that it wasn't over battered. The coleslaw was light without too much mayo - I wish we had been able to eat more! Pricing was $19 for 5 pieces of cod, with higher prices for salmon and halibut. The restaurant is a little place mostly for takeout with very limited seating. Because we live farther, we opted to eat there getting seats along the window counter seating. Plump pieces of oysters are well stacked with the veggies in the roll. The regular fries are excellent; these are better than sweet potato fries. Salmon (3) and Chips, $15.95 - 4 Stars Our order is supposed to be 3 pcs, but they gave us a pile! They are a bit dry, though. I am guessing salmon overcooks easily when deep fried. Next time, we'll stick with cod. We upgraded to sweet potato fries which turned out to be not that good; they were soft and limp. We'll stick with regular fries in the future. My rating reflects extra food despite not as good as I hoped. Crab Puppies (6) and Chips, $9.95 - 3.5 Stars We also received extra food with this order, maybe 8 pieces. Fast friendly service. I'm always a big advocate of going during slightly off-peak hours. Parking lot is tiny. I try to hit them up when I'm doing some shopping at Safeway and just walk over from there. It's a little awkward to get in and out of the spots that are theirs on the corner. Solid fish and chips spot. Came here on a Wednesday evening and it was empty. The restaurant filled up very quick after we ordered though. There's little amount of indoor dining and two tables to eat outside. We opted for the latter for more space. We ordered the sampler platter and a small (salmon) chowder. Food came out after about 15 minutes. The halibut, cod, clam, and shrimp pieces were good, but the catfish and salmon were on the dryer side. I also wasn't a fan of the crab puppies. The fries were good though. I also wasn't too fond of the salmon chowder. I had high expectations for it but it fell short. A bit too salty and I wish there were bits of salmon or something. Little did we know what awaited us. We arrived to a small dive with maybe 10 seats for a mainly take-out fish stand. The crab puppies were alleged hush puppies with crab stuffed inside. I never did visualize or taste any crab meat. Everything was fried and extra sauce was an additional 50 cents. As we waited for our order and scoped out a potential seat, I noted a large bag of frozen fries being dumped into the fryer. I should have followed my gut. The food was served quickly with little flavor and left me yearning for some bit of seasoning. It was also a bit greasy. We did not finish the food and left quickly. I went back to Yelp and noted a 4.2 rating. How could this be? The Seattle magazine, free to tourists, touted the food. I cannot understand the positive reviews of this place. Neither staff member said a single word out loud to me. She ignored me when I first walked in (no one else was in line) and then finally walked over and stared at me until I gave her my order. Now let's talk about the seriously underwhelming food. The pieces of fish were tiny and it was so dry and tough. The coleslaw was mostly peppers with red onion and a little bit of cabbage. They also only give you one 2 oz cup of tartar for three pieces of (granted tiny) fish and fries. The fries were good, at least. But unfortunately, the customer service experience left a lot to be desired and I can't in good conscience rate service higher. I ordered the halibut and chips and paid in full, including a 10% tip. After payment, the server came back to inform me they were out of halibut and asked if I'd be okay switching to cod. I agreed -- I was hungry! What happened next was the problem. The server proceeded to change my order without issuing a refund for the price difference. I had to be the one to bring it up! When I did, both the server and chef were at a complete loss -- neither knew how to process a refund or offer any meaningful resolution. I was left waiting for my food while they made no attempt to resolve the issue. To management and ownership: please invest in training your staff on basic transaction handling and customer service fundamentals. When a mistake happens -- and mistakes always happen (I get it) -- your team should know how to make it right. A simple refund or a complimentary item goes a long way. I understand $7 may seem small, but in this day and age we are all working hard to make a living. That's exactly why I tipped 10% before my food even arrived -- because I respect the work. That same respect should be extended to the customer. When it isn't, it's hard to come back or recommend this place to others, no matter how good the food is. read more

This family business really treats the community well; I've seen how kind the service is to all its customers, regulars and newbies alike, and they even sponsor the local little league. The store is rather small though (6 counter seats and a couple outdoor picnic tables), so I've seen a decent amount of people opt for takeout. Prices are the best you'll find for fish n chips and fries are nicely dusted. The quality of the food is solid, though not always the most consistent. Out of all the fish, the halibut is usually the most moist and tender and I'd definitely skip the catfish and salmon.
