I found Wally's randomly. I wanted some fish and chips, but I didn't want the typical fare. Wally's had catfish. Catfish? I've never had catfish. Reading the reviews, I was ready to try it! Even in the middle of an afternoon on a weekday, they had steady business. Extremely friendly too! I wanted to try everything, but I started with the catfish and chicken meal deal. I read I must do the lemon pepper hot honey. I'm not a huge fan of hot honey, but the raving reviews made me want to try this concoction. I am sooo glad I did. It has to be one of the best dipping sauces ever created. I would drink that by the gallon. It worked well with both the wings and the catfish. I got hush puppies and mac on the side. I'd never had hush puppies before. They were pretty good. The mac was delicious and very rich. And I had to get a side of crinkle fries because they're my favorite! My son and I came in for lunch on Friday! We both tried the fried catfish, shrimp, and two-side combo, and everything was absolutely delicious. My son loved the mac n cheese so much he just had to order an extra side, and he even said it's the best he's ever had! I enjoyed my gumbo at home later, and it was just as amazing. They truly serve the best fried catfish and shrimp around, and we so appreciated how fresh and quick the food came out. The space is beautiful, incredibly clean, and has such a great vibe...the 90's R&B playlist was absolutely perfect! Another Sunday, another craving for take out! Today we decided to try Wally's NW Soul located in the Central District at the corner of 23rd Ave. and Jackson in the former Jackson's Catfish Corner space. With several apartment building complexes and a senior living facility in the area I expect this spot to do well, especially with the product they are putting out. When we arrived we knew immediately that this was a popular neighborhood spot as it was standing room inside. Every table and every chair at the window counter was occupied. The vibe in the restaurant was great. The restaurant's menu is full of soul food and Southern favorites like fried catfish, fried shrimp, fried lobster tails, and fried chicken. Smoked turkey, po-boys (shrimp, catfish, and lobster), wings, candied yams, Mac n cheese, fried cabbage, collard greens, along with other bites are available. Several beverages (in particular the Mamalaids) appear on the menu as well. We chose to go with the seafood special which included fried catfish, shrimp, and fried lobster. The special comes with a selection of two sides. I chose hush puppies and the fried cabbage. My wife went with the fried catfish dinner which also comes with two sides She chose the Mac n cheese and candied yams. Folks, the catfish, shrimp, and lobster were fresh, and breaded, seasoned, and fried to perfection. It was not overwhelmed with salt or grease. The yams and Mac n cheese were Devine. The fried cabbage was great, reminding me of how my mom would cook it. Even though the restaurant was hoping, the front staff were welcoming and courteous. It was really busy in there folks! You can see the kitchen from the front and those guys were getting it done!! I imagine this will become a popular neighborhood spot if it hasn't already, even with another neighborhood favorite Simply Soulful just up the street. For those who are interested the public health rating is excellent (keep it going)! We were frequent patrons of Catfish Corner and still venture to Simply Soulful and Fat's. Mac n cheese was like stepping into blockbuster as a kid. Nostalgic baked mac n cheese. The collards?? FIRE. Perfectly Smokey, and salty, lil bit sweet. I didn't catch any photos of the chicken dinner, was a little surprised to see wings, flats and drumetts, was thinking a chicken dinner was leg with a thigh or breast... shouldn't have assumed but was thrown because they have wings on the menu... My partner usually picks the food up but the one time I did, everyone was so attentive and super friendly as soon as you walk in. The food is very yummy, a huge portions too so it is a little pricier. About $25 a plate. Never ate inside so I can't say too much about the ambiance. read more

Food is great. Customer service is horrible. I have come here multiple times, they close whenever they want to. The closing time says 8pm. Last time I came a few minutes after 7 they said they weren't taking any more orders. We drove 40 minutes to come. Decided to give it another chance today. Called them 3 times with no answer because we didn't want to waste our time again. Arrived at 7:32 to see the door locked with customers inside, woman opens the door and says they stopped taking orders at 7:30. If you stop taking orders at a certain time then you should post that as your closing time. Insane to waste time and gas in this economy to have someone turn you away when you arrived with plenty of time prior to closing. Or at least answer the phone so you can tell your customers that you're not taking any more orders for the day. read more
