I've been trying to find a good (authentic) soul food restaurant since moving to the state and somehow just came across Nana's Southern Kitchen... The restaurant is tucked in the corner of the plaza so parking is a little difficult. When you walk in, you're surrounded with pictures of Nana, her family and news articles. There's a good amount of seating inside as well for dining it. You order first and then either sit at a table for dine it or wait in your vehicle and they'll bring the food out to you. We viewed the menu and settled on the catfish nuggets with three sides ($28). At first I thought the pricing was a little on the higher end but when I got the plate - I realized the portion size absolutely warrants the price (the plate can feed two people or be split into two meals). For the sides I ordered candied yams, collard greens and Mac and cheese. The catfish nuggets had seasoning sprinkled on top and each piece was perfectly cooked, crisp and fresh (cooked to order). Each of the sides were equally delicious. The Mac and cheese was perfectly cheesy, the greens had the perfect amount of spice/kick to it and the yams added that nice sweet touch to break up all the savoriness. Even the cornbread was good - not too dry or cakey. They also sell a variety of pound cakes with rotating flavors and banana pudding, as well as sweet tea and cool aid. I went late on a Saturday night. It was pretty slow inside, but the people were really friendly. Overall, the food was really good. I wasn't a big fan of the cornbread, and I thought the wings were just OK, a little tough. The fried pork chops were amazing, the yams are on point, and the macaroni and cheese was a surprise hit. It has been a while ordering food from Nana's. I like that they are located in Kent, which is very convenient. The parking itself gets a bit crowded in that area. We were craving some southern cooking and they were able to help us fairly quickly upon coming in. We ordered a meal with the two main and two side. In our order, we had the fried chicken and catfish. For the sides we had their macaroni and cheese and collard greens. With the meal it did come with a cornbread. We added n extra cornbread for $4. All this was a bit pricey for a meal. We ordered our food to go, so once our food is ready, they'll bring it out to our car. Which is a very nice service! But it did take a long time to get our food, I'm glad that it was fresh though. As for the food itself, I thought the chicken could've had a little bit more salt. But we did have the hot sauce on the side to dip, which made it good. The catfish was delicious, lots of flavor there. Nana's special sauce that was offered, made it even better! The sides were good, but for the cornbread. I would've liked it more moist. Fast forward more than a year later, I followed up with the conversation and we had a conversation about my previous experience. I stopped by today and picked up a replacement meal in an effort to make things right. I got home after some rough traffic about 1.5 hours later and reheated my meal. I'm a creature of habit and chose something else. I got the pork chop since they no longer sell catfish filets. I'm not much of a catfish nuggets person. I got two pork chops, corn bread, Mac and cheese, yams, potato salad and a lemonade. ($29.73 normally, complimentary this visit). The pork chop is simple and not too thick. The yams are always a favorite. The potato salad does have a different taste than I remember, and the Mac and cheese is pretty standard. This experience is on par to my previous experiences with Nana's and I'm happy to have given them another chance. The yams were even better the next day. Kyan made a wonderful point, it's important to let businesses know when they're doing both good and bad so they have an opportunity to fix whatever needs fixing. I've ordered from here twice, and both times my order has been incorrect. It was the first time I had missed an entire meal and sides. I did receive some very salty chicken wings and green beans. Ect... Despite this, I decided to give them another chance, and the second time, they served me the oxtail plate, which contained only bones, no meat, and a plethora of potatoes. If you want comfort food, I would say go to Nana's, I had never been there before and my first I went with my boyfriend .The macaroni and cheese one of my favorites after trying it as well the smoothly whipped brown sugar sweet potato. I'm usually fairly picky about pitas salad cause my mom used ti make a really good theirs was very good. I'm writing this review as I'm currently waiting on my order here. This is my second visit this week and I brought friends with me. I'm from the Bay Area and didn't think I'd ever find anything in WA worth having. This place is amazing and everything here is good! I literally never been to a restaurant and EVERYTHING was good! I tried a little bit of everything, Pork chops= amazing, Fried Chicken= on point. The oxtails tasted jerked or something but by far the best I've ever had. The gravy alone was sub-par! The sides were all great with nothing extra! I was surprised the greens had no meat but still all the flavors as if it did. Nothing was too salty or too sweet. If I'm being 1000% honest the only thing I didn't love was the cornbread but I'm a Jiffy cornbread girl and I just like mine sweet. Been here many times. Last time I spent $80 on the Catfish/fried shrimp platter, and it got me SICK. The female cashier answering the phones today on July 14th, 1:13PM is very rude. I think she is family of the owner, from her attitude. The other cashier who is not family was pleasant. Anyways, I Called to ask how much the sides are and she hung up in my face and said the prices are online before hanging up. When I arrived she treated another family rude because they asked to be sat for a table of 6. My wife and I been coming here since they opened. (Got take out here all thru Covid.) we've notice every 6 months or so they would change things up, different spices or what not. Fine, we just stayed with it. (Food was top notch already, there was no need to change anything.) Fast forward to last weekend. We came thru and got take out like we typically do. Catfish was cut up in chunks and not fillets like before. It looked like they fed us scraps. They changed up the recipe again, added turmeric or something like that. The food was inedible, I'm born raised in the North Carolina and the collards greens was too salty, like the sea, no flavor just salt and greens. The fried catfish was over fried and you could tell the grease was old, and needed to be changed. The chicken wings had no flavor whatsoever and the grease tasted old. Salt is not a main seasoning. The fries were just dusted with salt and seasoning but no flavor. You can feed this to people who don't know any better, but southern people beware. Southern food is pride and love, this ain't it. The portion sizes were not what I would describe as even larger than average. Not a big deal except for two people we dropped almost $80. And once we returned home ( we ordered takeout) we realized two items were missing from our order. We were incredibly disappointed. There was nothing creamy about the Mac n cheese, it appeared to have been cooked early in the morning and left on a hot plate all day, the cabbage was soggy and listless. read more
