I had been going to Eleven to celebrate birthdays for years with a dear friend who passed a couple years ago and decided to go back for my birthday this year (on my birthday). The friend taking me out had never been to Eleven, and I assured her it would be a great experience. Or not.
We were taken to an enormous round table and left with menus. Within a few minutes, a server in training appeared to give us water and take drink orders but upon delivering these, never stopped again.
We were left unattended for 15-20 minutes when a male server abruptly stopped and asked what we wanted, as if about to keep moving rather than listen. No smile, no introduction, no apology for wait, no asking if we had been to Eleven or if we had any questions about the menu. He kept his answers to our questions brief and not always especially helpful. Even though my friend had put on the reservation it was my birthday, he didn't know but took the discount code from me when I asked if he needed that (which I knew should be mentioned at the outset from past birthdays). My friend has many diverse food allergies, which she explained so he could offer menu guidance, which he did. Long wait for food, with bread eventually delivered (~30-45 minutes after arriving).
Neither of our first courses were good (she had calamari, I had squash risotto - which was better heated up the next day with some added salt but still not anything special). The leftover box of risotto was plopped on the table with a paper bag underneath (in the past, take-home bags were checked at the front desk). Our main courses (beef tenderloin for her, Scottish salmon for me) were good, as was the crème brûlée (banana), though it was minuscule.
After dessert, he suddenly appeared and asked whose birthday it was (despite discussing this with me earlier) and delivered this broken chocolate "card" on an empty plate. In every other birthday outing I have attended, the plate has included fresh berries, sometimes with other small chocolates or fresh chocolate swirl. This was pretty pathetic.
All our other plates and silverware were cleared, so we just had this on the table when he came back with the check. My friend also had a holiday discount, and he hadn't taken the birthday meal off the bill either, so we had to wait for that adjustment. My friend paid in cash and told him no change was needed. He finally smiled.
I think he also finally really looked at the birthday plate, because he quickly ran off, saying as he left that he had something else for us. My friend tried to ask for more water as he left, but either he didn't hear in his haste or it was too late for water (we were the last diners in our section due to all the delays).
He came back with two small plates of blueberries and a couple blackberries (fresh and tasty) and a truffle for me and told us he had never seen the kitchen be so generous and never to expect so many berries again on return visits, because this was really special (I showed my friend photos of past "birthday" plates full of berries). He rushed off, never to return - not with water (despite two empty glasses and a request), not with silverware (table had been cleared), not with napkins. Fortunately, I still had mine, so we shared it to wipe our fingertips (berries were wet and a bit juicy-sticky on outside).
Good main courses but not the dining experience I had come to expect at Eleven. It was so bad that we were laughing - but we won't be back. Lesson learned. read more
