It was really hot the day I went but it felt like there was no AC in here. The staff is super nice and accommodating. Food and drinks came out fast. They have amazing waffle fries here and the weekday specials are awesome. It's half off wine bottles on Wednesdays. We got a bottle of bubbly wine for $13?? It's unheard of. A true bummer. This place has a prime time location on the square, good set up for sports and a good idea behind the menu, Gourmet Grilled Cheeses. Unfortunately that's were the good ends. First and always foremost, how was the food? An absolutely mess. Impossible to enjoy bc the sandwich falls apart immediately, simply can not pick up without losing everything inside, and greasy as all get out. I should have expected this to an extent, but a nearly $20 grilled cheese at a place that "specializes" in them, I would hope could do better than this. Service was very, very slow despite many open seats. The part that probably sent it over the top was the plate runner constantly spilling the tomato soups everytime they brought out someone's meal. Mine dripped all of the ground as he sat it down, my wife's got on her tray so the bread was just mushy on the bottom, and we saw it constantly as he walked by delivering others. Love this place. Come here every time we are in Pittsburgh. This time I tried the "My Diet Starts Monday" sandwich which would be breaded chicken, cheese, bacon, and maple syrup. I turned down the "Smack yo mama" (which I knew was amazing from previous trips) and tried this one. This place makes such great food that even though this new choice was not as good as smack yo mama, it was still good. I just didn't taste the maple syrup (which was a big reason I tried this one) We will definitely be back! Wow... What inexperience... This place really does live up to everything you hear about it on social media... Great vibes and really cool industrial decor. Lively atmosphere with a busy brunch crowd. And the food... Oh my goodness... I ordered the "smack yo mama" sandwich and it lives up to its name... Great service for a large group of us for happy hour. There must have been 20 of us and the waitress kept up with drink and appetizer orders and had us taken care of. The food was good (fried pierogies, beer, pretzels, cheese sticks, mac and cheese balls), the beer was cold, and we met our timeline to make it to the Pens game afterwards. Had dinner here on December 31 at 5 PM stood for a minute or two. Waiting for the hostess (gabby) to turn around after I said, excuse me three times. Caught the attention of a waitress in the distance who made surewe were seated after the hostess walked away from us. Our waitress was Brianna. I think? Good service, but she didn't come back to check to see how our food was. Which it was very good. We both had gourmet grilled cheese with two beef patties and caramelized onions. My waffle fries were a little bit overcooked. But the sandwich in the soup made up for everything. We ate at The Yard on July 2. We had reservations and had to call to change it from 4-6 as Open Table won't like you make anything for more than 4. The place was empty when we arrived, so not sure what that limit was about. When we entered the restaurant we immediately noticed how warm it was. While this was during a heat wave, it was beyond hot. Why? The AC was out. A notification would have been nice and we could have made a choice to still go, or not. As someone in our party has Celiac, this was a top option for their safety. I had to send my salad back due to the tomatoes in it being hot. Cucumbers weren't even chilled and the whole salad was beyond hot. I assumed it was in a warmer, but from what we put together, it wasn't. Our server was great but when I asked to return it she let me know that the kitchen was at least 20 degrees hotter. She asked the kitchen to pull my veggies from the walk in. The new salad was better, but still not great. If a kitchen isn't keeping product cold in the line, it shouldn't be open. Food was eh b/c of the temperature and then we couldn't safely trust eating it after the kitchen being so hot comment. A manger never came to check in. We could have been offered a cold drink on the house or maybe not charge me for the salad that I had to send back? Overall, terrible management of a situation that could have easily been handled better. read more

Came for brunch- most things came out luke warm and overdone. When I called to make our reservation, they told me they were extremely busy and weren't sure they could accommodate us, then we arrived to an almost empty restaurant. As soon as we sat down, our server told us we had a two hour limit, then proceeded to bring boxes before we finished our meal or asked for them, and the restaurant was still more than half empty when we left. We were downtown for Light Up Night and our usual spot (Redbeards) wouldn't even add us to a waitlist so we walked around and ended up at the Yard. There was a 45-60 minute wait but since they use OpenTable I was able to have them text when our table was ready. It was only about 35 minutes which was great. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our waiter was cheerful. The four of us ordered drinks and a few appetizers to share. Honestly their Buffalo Chicken dip was even better than Redbeards (and came with pita instead of tortilla chips - major bonus) so we may have found ourselves a new go-to spot. The drink I got was called "Let's Get Fizz-ical" and was similar to a mimosa. Delicious! Can't wait to come back to try more. read more

We had a larger group come in for an 11 AM reservation before the Steelers/Ravens game. We showed up early to try to be seated a little early to make sure we made it to the game in time. The hostess was really accommodating and made it work for our group despite the restaurant being fairly busy. Our server was Dani who got our drinks and took our orders quickly. I opted for the "basically bottomless" mimosas for $15. Dani kept them coming and my glass full! Most of our group opted to order off their grilled cheese menu (as opposed to the brunch menu). I got the "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" which had cheese, steak, peppers, and onions. Their grilled cheeses come with tomato soup and chips. I opted to sub my chips for waffle fries. My reason for taking off a star is that our food took almost an hour to come out. However, Dani checked in with us frequently to let us know that the kitchen was backed up and that our food should arrive soon. When the food arrived, I think overall everyone enjoyed their grilled cheese. I will say it looked more like a toasted sandwich than a grilled cheese - it didn't have the traditional grilled outside. I guess they just toast them or throw them in the oven rather than grilling them? It still tasted good but wasn't really what we expected. Overall, we had a nice time at brunch! The kitchen was backed up but they were busy so we understood. The service was what still made this an overall positive experience. Kudos to Dani, she was awesome! read more

We came on a weekend for lunch and they were quite busy. It took a while to be seated, but once we got seated service was very prompt. I like all things grilled cheese. I tried the Yinz Guys Hungry sandwich. It had great flavors, but fell short on the Pittsburgh theme. The waffle fries were soggy because it's next to a slice of tomato. There was also barely any Cole slaw on it. The grilled cheese toasts tasted so good though, it more or less made up for it. This looks like a great place to hang out. This place is cute!! I LOVE the fried pierogis. I've never had them before, and they have quickly become a fav. Our waitress was very sweet to us and their happy hour specials were great. I also got their cheeseburger with a caesar salad and have no complaints. I wish it was more busy in the restaurant. It was weird being lowkey the only ones there, but that is the only "complaint" I have and it's not really anyone's fault! I'd definitely recommend this to people in the area. read more

I normally have a great experience at The Yard this time not so much. I would blame it on the crowdedness but I've come during games and brunch without issue. This time there was an issue with my server getting food to us. It took him awhile to even take our orders and once he did he put one order in wrong. I would not even complain but I was with two little ones so the added wait caused a meltdown. I would not have even been bothered by the mistake had the correct food not been sitting in the window for some time while he conversed with two guests. We did finally get our last meal and was comped the cost of it. Although not expecting it it was appreciated. I tipped because he was nice but hopefully he will socialize less next time and focus on his table. read more

It was a Sunday and we were coming back from A pirates game, I didn't realize places close so early there on Sundays. So after finding two places that were closed, we stumbled on The Yard. And happy we did. It was packed but we were seated right away by a friendly hostess. She and all the staff were very nice, she even took the kids menu my son colored and put it up by her stand. The drinks and food were very yummy! They are known for their grill Cheeses but none of us got one, haha. They looked really good though. The poutine is so good; and filling. Was not a fan of the rude waitress I had, I asked if there was any other substitutions for pork option she looks at me and said why in the world would you not want pork. I replied I chose not to eat it. She looks at me and said yeah thats stupid and insane. Like ok you may not agree but the comment was unnecessary but aye freedom of speech. Everything I said it was a problem and I was being polite every time yes ma'am, no ma'am please thank you, still an attitude still a bother to her. The ambience is not it was not a fan of you cant make a reservation over 5 which was very interesting we had a party of 8 had to have two servers and put our own two tables together not a big deal but very different. I kind of had high expectations for this place because the menu sounds good for brunch. I went on brunch for Saturday and decided just to get a single Belgium waffle with 2 over medium eggs. I also got the bottomless mimosas so I didn't want heavy food. The Belgium waffle was slightly disappointing it wasn't soft and fluffy. The mimosas were weak in my opinion . My friend and I had a great experience here on a Sunday evening after a Pirates game. While I made a reservation on OpenTable and would recommend doing so, it didn't seem necessary this day. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated at a hightop near the bar right away. Our server was friendly and attentive. We each ordered a cocktail and both were delicious. Then we shared an appetizer of the fried pierogis - highly recommend! The light cajun seasoning was delicious, I could have eaten many more of these (5 come in the appetizer). After that we split the Walking Ched - a cheddar grilled cheese with 2 burger patties and mac n cheese topped with one of their Mac Attack Balls. This was delicious and we were happy we split it. You get 2 sides so my friend kept the chips and I upgraded to a side Caesar salad which was larger than I expected. For dessert we split the mini berry beignets which while good were my least favorite part of the meal. The berry filling in the middle was cool in some bites. read more

First night in Pittsburgh and we found this place. We were immediately greeted and taken to a table. Our waitress came right over and told us about some specials and happy hour. We ordered some drinks and placed our order. I went with the Gilmore Happy flatbread with sweet potato fries. The food came out really quick and everything tasted great. The dipping sauce that comes with the fries was awesome. We don't normally order dessert but we were talked into it and I was not disappointed. The cause we got high is a must try!
