I took my family here and was pleased to see they had a kids menu. My 10 year old really liked the veggie burger. It was really sweet but so good with the egg. My husband thought it was too sweet. Great place to go that contains a mixed menu of basic fare, and unique offerings. We started with the rich, flavorful French onion soup, and the delicious Matzah ball soup. Both were presented in large bowls, ingredients combined perfectly to bring comfort and delight. We continued with the Pittsburgh Salad with its own great variations including romaine, and cheddar along with enjoyable fry, tomato, cuke and for us chicken. Delicious, but we were sad to see no offering of a steak addition as an option. I was excited to try the pickle town chicken sandwich and it did not disappoint. From the brioche bun, to the thick chicken breast that was juicy with my choice of preparation as buffalo chicken, the flavor was popping with the delectable pickle town slaw that contained halved dill slices. My fiancé had the Pittsburgh fish and this was truly a Pittsburgh portion. The wonderfully hand battered cod was so huge, he had to eat a portion prior to continuing on his brioche bun. Our waitress was attentive even though she had many tables to deal with. Sad to see they painted white over the prior green, but the food quality remains as excellent as always. My family and I stopped here for a quick lunch after walking around the Carnegie Museum. It was around 1 o'clock, and lunch was still pretty busy. The service was quick, and all the servers are quite friendly. My husband ordered the turkey-and-cheese specialty featured on TV. I believe I had the chicken tenders, and my dad ordered the BLT. The BLT looked delicious. All the food came out very well. The atmosphere was more family-oriented and not too loud, making for good conversation. Union Grill is located on S Craig St in Oakland and three of us decided to go on a whim after a couple of hours at the nearby Carnegie Art and Natural History Museums. We stopped by around 2pm on Sunday and there was no wait for a table. The inside is fairly large with a large bar and quite a few tables available. The food here isn't anything fancy and it's not trying to be. It's pretty solid food in general and I thought our portions were good. My only regret is that we didn't go during their happy hour where their mules and drafts are half off. read more

I ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad with fries. The fries were a bit bland but the sandwich itself had some pretty good flavor. The lettuce wasn't soggy and it wasn't drenched in dressing. Union grill is one of my favorite go-to's in Pitt. The vibes are casual but nice, so it's perfect for a regular lunch with friends or a nice dinner with family. The outdoor seating is very nice too, although it can get a bit chilly or hot since there are no heaters or fans. The menu is a bit limited, but I am a huge fan of the Pittsburgh fish, as well as the mashed potatoes and Caesar salad. The serving sizes are large and filling, and the prices are very reasonable. Just a good, classic American restaurant menu, and you can't go wrong with anything. Also, they have late night Mule and Dessert deals ($3.50 for a mule and $2.50 for the brownie sundae) which is a college favorite!! Now onto the service... this is tricky because I've generally had very good experiences here with the waiting staff. However, this time, I had quite possibly the worst restaurant service experience I've ever had- the hostess was extraordinarily rude and snarky throughout the entire meal. I would still recommend this restaurant, and I hope that this was a one-off experience. read more

Still going strong. Went here for lunch a while back with my wife. She got a lump crab sandwich, which looked very similar to the salmon burger I got but had a distinct flavor. It was very large. I also got takeout here recently and they packaged my sandwich very nicely in a container with the vegetable medley side. The only small downside was that I asked over the phone for no dressing on the sandwich, but they put it on anyway. They replaced it no problem. read more

Turkey Devonshire somehow eluded me as a regional foodstuff. Pittsburgh Salads were on my radar as were the Polish and Eastern European delicacies one can find in and around the area. But a bacon topped and cheese sauce drenched turkey tartine never appeared in my research. When the missus was looking for places to eat near the museum, and she mentioned Turkey Devonshire was a specialty of the house, I was sold. It didn't hurt that pierogies were also on the menu. My kids love those little potato dumplings. This joint can be jumping and fortunately we beat the crowd. It can also get loud, so be forewarned. To be fair, I'm also getting old, and am getting more sensitive to noise as I advance in years. The beer list can be found on the TVs scattered around the restaurant walls. This was super annoying. Why? The TVs rotate through a series of promotional messages for the restaurant, and there was not enough time to fully digest the beer menu before being shown a picture of the key lime cheesecake. After many minutes of craning my neck to see the menu in fits and spurts, I simply gave up. That said, the dessert special looked amazing. Sadly, Union Grill provides so much food on each plate, we had no room. Thankfully the ginger beer on tap is delightfully bright and spicy, and it helped a bit with my digestion after consuming an unconscionable quantity of cheese sauce. Of course, I have nobody to blame for that but myself. The sauce, by the way, was delicious. Overall, my Turkey Devonshire was fine. It was brought down by toast points which tasted burnt on one side. The over charred side was cleverly flipped to the bottom, so any of the superiors watching the line cook put this thing together wouldn't catch the offending black bits of bread. Had I not been with my wife, I would have alerted our server and asked for a remake, however she gets mortified if I share any dissatisfaction with restaurant staff during a meal in her presence. For what it's worth the kids enjoyed the pierogies, burgers, and house made chips. The wife was pleased with her salmon, although the veggie sides were a bit lacking. I was eager to get out of there given the level of noise, but appreciated the opportunity to try a new-to-me regional classic. Glad I went, but I'm unlikely to return. read more

Intimate venue. Came on a Friday night with a girlfriend without a reservation but only had to wait for our host to clear a table for us. We chose pilot grigio to start, then my friend opted for the fish tacos and I got the seafood cakes and a salad. We then shared. All of our choices were tasty. I probably wouldn't order the fish tacos only because it wasn't a dish you could pick up and eat like a taco. That was a bit disconcerting as, well, it is a taco. Ah, the ever so famous Turkey Devonshire. It's apparently pretty popular at this place. Maybe even famous. That's what made me initially interested in this spot out of all the many others in the area. So, I tried the Turkey Devonshire, chicken tenders, fries, and matzo ball soup. The soup was really quite excellent. Great quality broth. It just gives a honey feeling to it. Perfect amount of seasoning. And a big piece of matzo in the middle. Good portion and fair price. Would definitely recommend as a side or appetizer. The chicken tenders I only tried a bit of, but they were great. Crispy and reasonably flavorful. The sauces they were served with are great too. Amazing ranch and awesome creamy green sauce. Fries were pretty solid as well. Now, the supposed star of the show should have been the Devonshire, but it was just too much for me. Too creamy and not cheesy enough, in my opinion. Bread got quite soggy quickly. Not much freshness or acidity to counterbalance the cream. And the Turkey itself seemed to not be the highest quality (somewhat tough). I am a bit disappointed with it, but will say the portion is very large. All in all, nice spot. It gets somewhat popular around lunch time when I went, especially with college kids. Service was decent and food is pretty good, but their star dish was just okay. read more

Union Grill is always tasty! I went with some friends after working up an appetite exploring the Carnegie Museum of Art nearby and was not disappointed. I got the Pittsburgh salad with chicken and it was a great mix of flavors. The service was good but the food did take longer to arrive than I was expecting. However I'll note that the restaurant was fairly crowded for a Sunday afternoon past the typical lunch rush. Given that the vibe was still relaxing. Our party of 8 arrived prime time lunch hour and we were told it would be a 25-30 minute wait. The 4 adults strolled over to take some empty seats at the bar while the kids waited on the bench. Bloody Marys spicy were ordered and they were out of this world. They make their own Bloody Mary mix. We were seated shortly afterward and these were the orders: 2 Turkey Devonshires, church pierogies, 2 chicken tender dinners, fresh salmon burger, and smokehouse burger. Everything was quite good-fan favorite was the turkey Devonshire. Pierogies were nothing special-onions did not seem carmalized at all. I used to love their food. It's definitely changed. I don't know if they got a new chef or what but my favorites used to be the fish tacos and church pierogies. Both changed. The fish taco is now 1 single gigantic hard to eat taco. The pierogies now don't taste made from scratch and taste more like frozen Mrs.T's. A bit disappointed since the remodel. Enjoyed lunch on a weekday at Union Grill. This was the first time I've been there in several years and I must say, the new decor is fantastic! Great job on keeping the warm character and updating the decor. I don't see Turkey Devonshire on many menu and its one of my favorites. It was everything I wanted and leftovers for the next day. The turkey, bacon and cheese sauce were delectable. I would get it again! My husband got the Reuben sandwich with mixed vegetables. He really enjoyed. My wife is particular on her burgers and absolutely loved the cheeseburger and fries!! My daughter loved her cheeseburger!! I haven't been here for almost 20 years but wanted to go someplace I knew my girlfriend would like after a date at Phipps. The hostess had us squeeze past the tables and bar chairs making dinners move. We preferred a Mediterranean Lavash for our appetizer. The salad on it was good but the onions were a little too overpowering. The hummus was really good. My girlfriend ordered their specialty Turkey Devonshire. I love their Devonshire (and she did too) but I ordered the French Onion Soup Broiled Pan Burger. Fries were extra. The Devonshire was creamy and my girlfriend loved it. The burger I had was good but not all of the cheese had melted. The fries were crispy. But I couldn't use the off-brand food service brand ketchup. How many Pennie's are you trying to save by not offering Heinz ketchup in the home of Heinz? Minus one star for the ketchup faux pas. The waiter was polite but never checked on us when the entree was served to see if it was okay. It's a good place for a beer bar food. read more

How did we end up stumbling into one of the best meals I've ever had? Seriously?! After a long walk through Oakland followed by a trip to Phipps, we were ready for some FOOD! I pulled up my trusty Yelp app and saw this was one of the closest to our location. Thank you, Yelp. It's a cute place right on South Craig. Parking there can be a nightmare but that's the only negative. We were seated immediately, greeted by our waiter within a minute, and started to peruse our menus. I saw Turkey Devonshire was listed as being on a Food Network show so I decided to order it. I was not disappointed. As you can see from the picture, it looks delicious and tastes just as great. I ate half and the leftovers were just as tasty the next day. The prices were reasonable (there's even an ice cream with brownie dessert for only $2.50!) The server was a bit slow and forgot to check back, kept my credit card after running it, and seemed to be having a rough night. All that aside, I would go back for the simple but well done food. I had the seafood cake which was a little over done on the bottom, but the top was perfect, and they tasted great. Glad I got the cocktail sauce and no tartar sauce, but would have liked more (if the server would have come back to check on us I would have asked for more). The fish tacos come highly recommended but it comes "open face" on two large tortillas. It's a little overwhelming to put together and was not my favorite. The French fries and chicken tenders were also very good and the kids meals are priced nice and come as a larger portion.
