Good food spot with pretty great happy hour deals. Just off Walnut St., Shady Grove has a pretty good vibe. Great place for brunch or dinner. They have nightly specials too. There's an upstairs balcony area and a few outdoor chairs on the street. It's definitely a great vibe in the summer. I do wish there were more TVs behind the bar but there is at least one, however unless you're going there to watch Pittsburgh sports, I doubt they carry any other teams. Our main stop in Shadyside.. honestly our main stop when we are leaving downtown and hungry before we get to Monroeville. They have the BEST sandwiches and pizzas! We used to live closer and go more often, but still the vibe, the menu, the staff, the price... everything is worth it. The restaurant has two levels. Downstairs is always busy and fun with a bar centered in the space and multiple tvs around the dining area. Upstairs is much more chill usually... and also where the bathrooms are. The staff is phenomenal. You are always immediately greeted by the nicest hostesses.. and if there is ever a wait, you can give your phone number and then go peruse Walnut Street shops! Got seated immediately on a Sunday evening, great patio, the food is good, but what's up with the service? We had to ask for water where other tables had them brought out before introduction, had to go inside to ask the bar for utensils, ask for water refills, appetizer plates never got cleared, and our server checked on us maybe twice. Somewhat busy on a Friday evening with about a 15 min wait, got seated in a corner apparently out of sight from the waitstaff and didn't get a waiter for about 15 min. Placed a drink order, appetizer & mains. Appetizer came out cold with no utensils or plates, another 10 minutes before water showed up. Im obsessed with this place. My friend and I came here for dinner and since the weather has been nice we sat up on the balcony. The food is always on point and so is the service. My friend and I went here last night to catch up since it's been awhile. I found it on here and then she mentioned shes been a couple times. We got seated a couple minutes after arriving which was a relief because we were both starving. We shared the buffalo chicken dip and it was delicious. I got the french onion soup, it was pretty good. It had the RIGHT amount of cheese which is always a delight. Then I got their vegan portobello mushroom tacos. Grilled portobello, pico de gallo, crispy grilled portobello, pico de gallo, crispy onions, vegan cheddar, avocado and cilantro serrano sauce. I LOOOoooOved their cilantro serrano sauce. Shady Grove brings me back to the summer I worked as an assistant for Franco Doc Harris Jr's council campaign. That summer I took advantage of their half of bottles of wine on Wednesdays. It turns out that they still do that. The salads are still served in a mixing bowl that's as big as my face and they taste delish. Service was awful. We are new to Pittsburgh and so far everyone's been friendly and we never complain. Not one single person greeted us. The girl with the male short hair that was behind the bar at the kitchen gave us a dirty look as we sat at the bar and then again on her way out. The bartender did not say a single word to us and gave us a blank stare while we ordered beers and food. It wasn't until we paid and said he was going to bring us change that we got an interaction. Delish!!! We did a random trip to Shadyside and popped in based on reviews. We were all beyond happy with that decision. Our service was fantastic, menu suggestions were on point and the food was fantastic. We had the French Dip, Chicken Funguy, and Hot Honey chicken sandwich. Good service and grub. We sat outside on the 1st floor for lunch and had a chipper and helpful server. The Korean fried chicken sandwich (I had it without cheese) was quite delicious, with the gojuchang sauce and fried egg mixing together nicely with the chicken and the pickled something-other-other under the lettuce. My wife and I first visited Shady Grove two months ago while moving our daughter into college. That visit was positive enough that we looked forward to coming back with her. Unfortunately, our return during Family Weekend was a major letdown. We were told there would be a 45-minute wait. We waited about 35 minutes, even though multiple tables sat empty in plain sight. When we were finally seated upstairs, there were even more open tables, which made the long wait feel unnecessary and frustrating. Our server, AJ, was friendly, but service was disorganized from the start. When our meals arrived, we had no napkins, no silverware, and part of my entrée missing. After pointing this out, AJ returned several minutes later with one set of silverware for two people. A few minutes later, he came back with a single fork, assuring us he'd "keep looking" for a knife. That knife never came. We shared what little we had so we could at least eat our food. Throughout the meal, there were no water refills, and no offer of another drink. When the bill came, AJ let us know he had taken 10% off my salad (less than $2) as compensation. Given the number of problems, that gesture felt inadequate. To be fair, the food itself was good. But the service was so poor that it completely overshadowed the meal. With so many other restaurants in the area, we have no reason to return, which is a shame, because we're loyal customers when we find a place worth sticking with. read more

While it seems to be a good place to catch up with friends over a drink (they have karaoke night and happy hours), the food is underwhelming and overall lacked seasoning. Jamaican Jerk Mahi Mahi Tacos ($16): 2/5 Looks delicious, tastes like nothing. The fish was underseasoned and dry. The manga salsa wasn't sweet or acidic. There were maybe 2-3 tiny slices of pickled onion and that was the strongest flavor. I tend to stray from salty food, but I had to add salt to these tacos. I was in Shadyside for the day along with two other people. The first thing we noticed was how friendly the staff were. For drinks I ordered one of their strawberry lemonade punches and it came in like a CapriSun pouch. It was good and very strong! Everyone at the table was satisfied with the drinks and the appetizer. We got the fried pickles and they were amazing. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. They served this house made ranch with the pickles and it's to die for. It's garlicky and spicy. Moving on to the main course: My mom and I got the F.G. BLT, except she got hers with a garlic aioli sauce and a side salad. I ordered mine with the old bay sauce (it comes with that) and fries. I ended up trying my moms and I liked it better with the aioli. The old bay didn't add much flavor to the sandwich, and the fries were pretty bland. I had to add more salt and pepper to make them better. My brother got the Jamaican chicken sandwich and it was pretty good, nothing to ride home about, but good. Overall, this restaurant is worth going to if you're in shadyside and want a great atmosphere/environment. The other restaurants in shadyside don't really provide that.
