The vibe is very lively on a Friday night. It's trendy and might make some believe Pittsburgh is actually a happening place and not the laid-back chill city it actually is. We had a family dinner over here - made a reservation of a private room near the kitchen. This is such a fabulous restaurant. Everything we ordered was delicious and impressive! We loved the roasted carrots and beet salad as starters, the orange was delicious too, they served cod tonight and it was excellent with the nutty topping. The mussels and scallop, served with rice cake was also tasty. Then we ordered several desserts, my favorite was the pistachio cheesecake, and it came with a big volume. Our server was very charming and she celebrated the night with some fireworks. Having access to a private room was so nice for the family setting so we can hear each other more easily. It was packed inside so I'm glad I made a reservation for Saturday at 1pm. The vibes and staff are great as always and the food was delicious! There was nothing that stood out. The flatbread was something you could get at Costco. The lettuce wraps were ok but not great. The best thing we had was the tomato soup and grilled cheese dumplings. We spent over $500 for 5 people. We had 7 drink, 2 desserts, and small plates. We had enough food, but no one was "full." We got the daily special of harissa shrimp (4.25/5), seafood skewers (top; 4.25/5), kimchi fried rice (4.75/5), and sea bass (5/5). The shrimp was good; the harissa added some nice flavor, but it was a lot milder and less spicy than usual. The seafood skewers were good; I liked how the pineapple added a bit of sweetness. The tuna, swordfish, and salmon were all well cooked. The kimchi fried rice was really good and a great value for only $7, especially compared to the rest of the menu's prices and the larger quantity; two orders will probably be the same or slightly larger than a main at most restaurants. The sea bass was amazing! It had a nice slightly crunchy outside and an intense, rich flavor from the sage brown butter; I think it if I ate it by myself it would have for sure hurt my stomach because of how rich it was. The balsamic glaze and beans also complimented it well. This was definitely the best sea bass I've had. The service was good (4/5). Our waitress helped suggest how many dishes to order and what stood out on the menu. I've been hearing some "buzz" about Palm Palm for a while now and was super excited to try it during restaurant week! The menu is California themed and everything was very fresh and garnished exceptionally well. The decor inside matched the Cali vibes of the menu and was surely a "warm" spot on a very cold Pittsburgh Day. For starters, we had the tuna tots (still thinking about those) and the bruleed oranges with goat cheese - very unique and wonderful pairing and a combination I've never tried before! For entrees, we tried the short rib and the Palm Palm chicken, which was topped with roasted tomatoes, peppers and a nice signature sauce. The portions on the entrees were nice as well! To round out the meal, was creme brûlée and key lime pie. The only thing we didn't quite care for was the creme brulee, the consistency was a little bit off compared to others I've had. The atmosphere is pretty cool; definitely seems to be a bit more on the upscale vibe. In terms of food, I got to try their mango pancakes and a latte. Both were just average. The pancakes were actually quite disappointing. There's only a tiny bit of the syrup on top. The rest is dry and pretty flavorless. The mango did seem to be pretty fresh, though. It just didn't have much flavor, although the portion was pretty good (but also, price wise, it's a bit on the higher side). The latte was also just average; really cant remember much about it. The restaurant's entrance is on the corner on Center Ave-street level (it's part of a large two-level commercial complex.) As I've been to other restaurants owned by this Restaurant Group, my expectations were low so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed my visit with some friends for brunch on a sunny warm Sunday in March. Our table was ready when we arrived and service was timely the whole time, no rushing us nor long waits. Having been to Palm Springs, the ambiance decor and vibe is spot on. However, I was quickly proven wrong. While It is very aesthetic & cute inside, the food is top notch. I'd give the Korean chicken a 10/10 as well as the steak with this interesting chimichurri, a style I've never had before. The desserts were good, and definitely big enough to share. Upon walking in, the atmosphere is very lively and bright. The decor is really cool, and they have multiple areas to dine/drink (bar, outside, couch area, or main tables). Apparently the larger tables are reservation only so definitely recommend getting a reservation in advance! The happy hour special on food and drinks are great, however only allowed in the bar, outdoor patio, and couch area. If cocktails aren't your thing, then they had a few fun sodas to try. I got the lychee coconut milk with was tropical, (very) sweet, and fun. We only tried the small plates which were honestly enough for us. We had the calamari (delicious dipping sauce, perfectly fried), truffle spaghetti o, artichokes, tuna rice tots, and a dessert. Honestly nothing blew my socks off, but I will say the artichokes were pretty amazing and on par with the ones at Alta Via if not better (IYKYK). The truffle spaghetti o's were yummy and different. I was not a fan of the tuna rice tots. It was just chopped tuna on top of rolled rice balls. I could have made that at home. They had a variety of fun desserts which all seemed to be mousse based. We tried the passionfruit sesame which was (very) tart and right up my alley. Service was good, they checked on us multiple times, but at times felt a bit overbearing. Everyone raved about the Truffle Spaghettios, so I had high hopes but this was actually my last favorite appetizer. The Broccoli Caesar was FANTASTIC and life changing. I would come here just to have that! The Lobster Rolls were tasty, and the roll was soft and delightful. For our main meals, I had the Coconut shrimp and my husband had the beef Ragu. Both of these meals were underwhelming in comparison to the appetizers. To finish off the meal, I had to try the infamous orange dessert. It was very unique, and I'm glad I tried it. The flavor was great, but it we pretty dense I was hoping for something lighter. My husband ordered the New York steak with pepper relish and crispy onions--fun, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We also sampled their flat iron wagyu--high quality and cooked beautifully. Now, dessert here is a must. Honestly, I'd come back just for that. Here are my reviews for what we ate: Grilled-cheese tomato-soup dumplings - 4 stars - This small plate creatively combined cheese wontons and tomato soup and was served in spoons. Mini lobster roll - 3 stars - Shrimp and lobster filled a brioche bun. The chef used too much lemon juice, so the lemon was overpowering and prevented us from tasting the meat. Seabass - 4 stars - The seabass was a good size. It came with a flavorful coconut-pineapple rice as well as chimichurri and jicama slaw. Wagyu ragu - 4 stars - The pipe-rigate pasta was cooked properly and contained wagyu chunks and veal demi-glace sauce. Orange dessert - 4 stars - This dessert had a cute shape. It contained orange cake, orange mousse, mandarin cremeux, and mandarin jelly. These two small plates, two large plates, and one dessert cost $121 plus tax and tip. Of course, we could have spent much more, especially if we had ordered drinks. My husband said, "The food has been very OK. This is a place for pictures, not for food. It's not very good. We felt the dishes were reasonably priced, but one thing to note is that the portions of the smaller bites would be difficult to split between more than two people. The artwork, the decorations, everything is spectacular and spot on with regards to the feeling that the owners hope to evoke when patrons enter the restaurant. All those items being said, I hoped for more from Palm Palm and I pray that Palm Palm can make some adjustments. I ordered the Mini Lobster Rolls, Kimchi Fried Rice and Short Ribs Barbecue. My daughter, Muff ordered the Sushi Tots, Deviled Crab Fritters and Fried Brussels Sprouts with Sweet and Sour Sauce and my sister, Luch ordered the Roasted Broccoli Caesar Salad, Street Corn Queso Dip and Nutty By Nature Cheesecake. The food is beautifully plated and the service is spectacular. Now, about the food. We had some hits and some misses. The Mini Lobster Rolls were tasty as well as the Short Rib bites. The fried rice was tasty, but still a little hard against your teeth. The Sushi Tots and Brussels Sprouts were also tasty. The Street Corn Queso Dip was tasty, but a little on the runny side and only came with a limited amount of tortilla chips. When my sister asked for more, she didn't realize that she would be charged for them. Seriously, tortilla chips are cheap and a little more can be provided. The Deviled Crab Fritters were acceptable but definitely needed some additional crab meat. They only had hints of crab. And the Broccoli Caesar Salad and Nutty By Nature Pistachio cheesecake were delicious! All in all, Palm Palm is a wonderful addition to the Pittsburgh food scene, they just need some tightening up of some of their menu items. I also give them grace because they haven't been open long and I pray that others enjoy the restaurant's vibes. read more

We unfortunately missed the opening of Palm Palm last year. It's a big energetic place with a diverse, small plate menu. We had salads, burratta and Ceasar, lobster tails and lobster roll sliders, and the tomato soup and grilled cheese dumplings. Everything was great, and the pace of service was perfect. I give the wine list a low score because the choices are almost totally obscure bottles you never see anywhere else, and the glass/bottle prices are quite unusual. We will definitely be back to try other menu items. They copied some of the unique practices of their sister (mother?)restaurant, Ritual House, including the miniature light fixtures on the tables and the birthday sparklers. read more

Another concept from the owners of Ritual House, which has become a special occasion favorite for me and my family, I am excited and appreciative that Palm Palm is here, continuing to elevate the Pittsburgh food scene. The cool, vintage West Coast vibe is on point. I loved all the thoughtful details, from the seashell chairs around the bar to the feathery decor over the lounge to the posh green tile with gold accents in the bathroom. Even the menu was printed on a thick, almost linen feeling card stock. It all says, you are here to escape for a moment and immerse yourself in the experience. I can't speak to the large plates, which all sounded thoughtfully done but none of which were vegetarian. But that was fine by me because I really wanted to order a lot of small plates here and try a bunch of things, and there were so many vegetarian-friendly options. The friend who went with me is gluten-free and our server inquired about certain items to make sure they would be OK for her and nothing was hidden in the ingredients. We were there in the first week of opening and our server didn't yet know all of those answers offhand, but was more than happy to find them out. We had six or seven small plates, most shared but one each specific to each person that the other couldn't eat. Mine in this category was the truffle SpaghettiOs, which I think I would eat daily if I could. The flavor was a sublime truffle mac & cheese paired with nostalgia. I was excited that there were so many vegetarian-friendly options and we tried things ranging from street corn taquitos to artichokes to one of my favorite dishes at the other restaurant, brûléed oranges. I wasn't disappointed in a single plate. There is a very nice, well-balanced cocktail menu. I unexpectedly became a non-drinker this year and I am always very interested in what kinds of NA options a nice restaurant has for me. They have a handful of very nice handcrafted sodas. I ordered two of these throughout my meal; they're priced at $9, a little more than half of a cocktail, which I thought was fair. Our bill was $125 before tip, and we felt that was fair and did not leave hungry, as often feels like the case at places with Instagrammable small plates. This is a really nice dining experience. We celebrated my birthday here as soon as I could find a reservation in the normal dinner hours. Parking is easy in the garage next door. They have indoor and outdoor seating. (Indoors is loud, as there are a lot of beautiful if reflective surfaces.) We had a table in the center and a friendly waiter who answered all our menu questions. One thing to know is that not all small plates are the same size. I made a meal of the unfortunately named truffle spaghettioes (no sickly sweet tomato sauce, just slightly salty cheese sauce; too small to share), some (slightly salty) Brussels sprouts (we had leftovers), and some of hubby's steak (shareable). He really enjoyed the steak as well as the heirloom tomato salad, which he demolished. I can't recommend the house soda, which is a $9 glass of shaved ice and a little spritz. The lemon berry cake was generous for two and delicious. Prices were fair. I'll give them another try. read more
