À la carte sides that sounded amazing. Instead of the carrots, I got the happy hour confit wings (half and half calabrain chili honey or old bay ranch rub). The fish sandwich was textural perfection (laurel hill trout filet stacked high, winter slaw, tartar, brioche). Perfectly cooked and stacked! Servers threw on complimentary chocolate chip cookies which was very nice... 2 girthy cookies that were especially memorable for its semi chunky salt on top before serving. The staff was super friendly. Had the vibe that this would be a pretentious fine dining experience but was way more casual and approachable than anticipated. Scratch & Co. is a quaint little restaurant in Troy Hill close to the steepest hill in Pittsburgh. The owner of this restaurant was super accommodating for a large group, and he even was helpful in rescheduling after a very large snowstorm. Overall, the service was very good until the end when we were charged a large service fee and could not split our large group into individual checks. In their defense, I should have checked with the restaurant beforehand, but regardless, they were not very accommodating! Let's get to the food & drinks! This restaurant is known for their cocktails & they did not disappoint. I had this pear gin cocktail that was amazingly good! Their focaccia was to die for. Their bread had a different texture than the usual focaccia, but it was delicious. It was hard to determine my favorite dipping sauce because they all were so good! The foccacia came with whipped ricotta and Muhammara, which was incredible! For my dinner, I ordered their famous meatloaf. It was really delicious, but the meal came out lukewarm at best. Most of the meals at the table came out in this way. It was almost as though they didn't know how to accommodate a large group at once. Other people in my group tried the trout and steak and all the food got glowing reviews. For dessert, some of us had the mango gelato and others had the olive oil cake, which had concord grape jam on top. It was definitely an odd pairing. The Gelato was good but nothing special. We had made a reservation, although tables are often available for walk-ins. We parked our vehicle for free on the street. We arrived slightly early, but the host immediately greeted and seated us. Our waiter also provided prompt and courteous service. We were wearing casual clothes, and we fit in with the other customers who wore a mix of casual and upscale clothes. Here are my ratings for our foods: Focaccia - 4 stars - Several slices of warm focaccia were served with extra virgin olive oil and cabernet-sauvignon vinegar. Trout - 4 stars - The piece of trout was a good size, was cooked well, and was flavored nicely with butter, capers, lemon, and herbs. Meatloaf - 4 stars - A piece of meatloaf was served with mashed redskin potatoes, gravy, and crispy onions. Tetsukabuto Squash - 4 stars - Slices of squash were slightly burned. They were flavored with a unique combination of spicy banana peppers and some ricotta. Desire and Necessity Pie Duo - 3.5 stars - This dessert consisted of a rich chocolate chess pie (4.5 stars) and a vinegar pie (2.5 stars). Crushed, salty graham cracker was sprinkled on top. The total price was $106 plus tip. We used a coupon, gift card, and credit card in the InKind app to pay for it, although you could use just cash or a credit card. Unfortunately not my favorite spot! We both got the fish sandwich and were not super impressed. We waited a while and our food came out pretty cold. The bun was soggy as well. They definitely need to add more salt to everything. Additionally, the tilapia on it was not our favorite. Both of us got sick later in the night... personally we won't be coming back. We did not feel rushed at all and it was so nice to disappear from the world for a few hours in this cozy space. We tried many things from the menu, including the focaccia and buttermilk whipped ricotta, the Calabrian honey wings, and the meatloaf. For dessert, a Scratch Ice Cream Sundae. The cocktails were on point, and watching them make two different cocktails at a time without missing a beat was fun. They had delicious focaccia and house made giardinera / pickles for us to snack They served our dinner family-style - butternut squash soup, meatloaf, chicken, cauliflower, carrots, and potatoes were all super tasty - impressive for a small restaurant with so many people in our party (about 30)!!! My wife, while making the reservation, made note of her severe food allergies. When we arrived, we were handed a personalized menu that the chef had already reviewed and struck out the items and/or ingredients of dishes she'd be unable to have. Amazing. Needless to say, service was up to this standard and was truly wonderful. First - the meatloaf. It was quite literally perfect. It's the best meatloaf I've had and it was a dish where I didn't know that a meatloaf could taste that good. Extraordinary. Chocolate chip cookies with Millies Vanilla Ice Cream. Cookies were warm, ice cream was perfectly soft. Few things are better than that. Not trying to suck up - personally preferred my mother in law's Olive Oil cake. Been a few years since last visit and the service was still excellent. That and the decor made for a good evening. I guess I could have done better with what I ordered. The food was plated well but salt and pepper should be on the tables because my meatloaf sure needed something. Didn't care for the apple crisp either. The taste was fine but the apple slices really didn't allow you to get the proper blend of apple, oatmeal, and ice cream with each mouthful. Should have sliced and diced the apples first but didn't. But today, even with a five pm reservation we waited almost 1.5 hrs for our food, one dish came out 45 minutes before the rest of the food. All of the food was under salted, the steak was overcooked, the side vegs were cold with parts so tough we couldn't chew it. Vibes were great! Started off with focaccia and whipped ricotta. Some of the lightest, airiest, delectable focaccia I've had. Ricotta was the chef's kiss. Cucumber salad was so flavorful and packed with texture variety! Minty, salty from pistachios, fresh, and delicious! I had the meatloaf for my entree, and it was the best meatloaf I've had. Thick, hearty, and seasoned to perfection. Best meatloaf in Pittsburgh! Fried onions on top... my mouth is watering for more. We split some asparagus, and it was loaded with dill and a touch of heat. Fantastic, shareable side dish! My wife got the fusilli, and the bites I had were excellent. A little jealous of her - I wanted this dish too! Wow! I've been wanting to go here for some time and so happy I finally made it. The atmosphere inside is very cozy and bright. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Okay so let me start by saying it was a Steeler Sunday and my non-football friends picked the place, but I absolutely adored it and didn't even follow the game after everyone got there. I will say I was a bit disappointed bc I saw a menu with a bourbon drink I wanted and the current menu didn't have it (and in fact had most drinks made with gin, which I don't like at all) so I went with an old fashioned. I started with the raised grape jam filled doughnut, which I shared with the table. It wasn't bad, I do wish it was warmed a bit but that's my preference. My one friend said the jam was very Concord grape, which he adored. I then order the breakfast sandwich which was THE best. Idk the flavors just all paired well and there was no seasoning that over powered it. The brioche bun was fluffy and I could have eaten that with some butter and jam (like a biscuit). All and all the food was 10/10. The restaurant y was average noise but it also was not packed so it may differ based on capacity. Our waiter was nice but I feel like he was annoyed with our table, not sure just a vibe I felt so much so that I didn't ask my norm for a new restaurant, which is what do you recommend. I finally made it to Scratch & Co. I put it off because of it being located in Troy Hill, a neighborhood I never find myself in. It was a beautiful hot summer's evening and I was enticed to go to attend a special happy hour event highlighting farm-to-table food. I am very picky about my bread and their focaccia was excellent and paired with very flavorful spreads. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. After finally trying this restaurant, I fully understand the hype. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh (shoutout to our amazing server, Pim). I ordered the pork porchetta, which was amazing. If you like pork belly and are ok with eating a good bit on of fat, you will enjoy this dish very much. We also ordered the bread and rotating butter (smoked tomato) which was also wonderful. I washed all the food down with their house made root beer. For dessert, we shared some of the Millie's soft serve, which was a perfect ending for a stellar meal. I came with a group of 5 on a Saturday evening with reservations. We were seated on the bar side of the restaurant since the other dining room side does not have tables to accommodate a group of 5. It is darker on the bar side, so keep that in mind if you are planning to go with a large group. The service was impeccable and the restaurant is comfortable and elegant, but not stuffy. What a find! Greeted by a very kind young man as soon as we arrived. Had reservation and table ready when we walked in. Cool place with relaxed decor. Clean and restrooms were as good as you would want at home. I had the Campanelle with meatballs and it was very good. Their garlic bread is perfect! Laura had the meatloaf which was my other choice but it was excellent as well. They have Jackworth ginger beer which is an up and coming spot near Bakery Square so happy to have a mule with some Jackworth. Well done you guys. One of the best brunches! Reservations on Resy are a good idea, as this is a popular spot. Street parking is available, as is food pickup. The menu has a selection of all the typical breakfast fares and doesn't disappoint. The Bloody Mary has a nice kick from the horseradish and is a little chunky. Small bits of pickled veggies are on the stick. Overall, a really good breakfast cocktail. The breakfast sandwich is served on brioche and I opted for an everything bagel. It came with a good egg to cheese ratio and nice pieces of bacon on top. The smashed potatoes with garlic aoli are a must. They have a nice crunch and are large enough to share. Everything at Scratch is always amazing and dinner there last week for Pittsburgh Restaurant Week was no exception! My Osaka Highway Oasis cocktail (lightly sweet and sublime), the smashed potatoes (quite possibly some of the best potatoes in Pittsburgh), and the chicken and prime rib were my favorites (so flavorful and cooked perfectly!). We happened to go on a Thursday when they have their prime rib dinner and two people in our party managed to snag them (we were informed by our server that there's a limited amount each Thursday and they were out of them shortly after we ordered them). You can make reservations on Resy but the maximum number of people you can have on the reservation is seven. I called and left a message requesting to add one more to the party but my message was not returned. I talked to someone there about it upon arrival and they said we could add another person, no problem. We were seated in a cute little booth that could theoretically seat eight but be warned, it's a tight squeeze. The left side of the restaurant has some of these booths plus the bar and the right side of the restaurant when you're walking in has smaller tables for 2-6 people from what I remember with good natural lighting so if you want good food pics, try to see if you can sit on the right side. The parking situation is street parking and it's always a little dicey in Troy Hill but everyone in our party managed to find party fairly easily. Overall, our service was quite good, the food was delicious, and it's such a cute space. I would 100% go back! read more

This little spot in Troy Hill is super cute! It feels like you're going to brunch at a friend's house. The seating and decor is very aesthetic and they also sell art on the walls. The staff is super nice and attentive here. They do take reservations on Resy. It's a smaller space so I would definitely recommend reservations. The coffee was fine but I didn't really like my Thai iced tea. It tasted super milky without that Thai tea flavor. The food here is very aesthetic and nicely plated too! I love that they have a sustainable approach towards avo toast - they do an herbed chickpea toast instead. It's very pretty with an egg! I liked it but I felt very full after eating just half, so maybe the chickpea spread is a bit heavy. It was kind of hard to eat since cutting the toast was tough. They also do bagels here from Hellbender. Our party liked them and said it was on par with Pigeon Bagels. The breakfast sandwich here is really good too. Our friend enjoyed her lox toast too. Would definitely recommend this spot for brunch! I will need to come back to check out dinner and lunch since they have a great burger deal during the week and they also serve cocktails. The hype is real! My husband and I just celebrated our first wedding anniversary and stayed the night on the North Side at our wedding venue, and decided that we should have a nice brunch nearby the next morning. We made a reservation (very easy, via Resy!) and had a short waiting time when we arrived. We were comfortable sitting in the very cute, cozy lounge area while we waited. It was VERY busy, so I highly recommend a reservation if you want a spot for brunch on the weekend. Once seated, our server was quick to take our beverage orders. We both tried the Vietnamese iced coffee and LOVED it - it was very sweet and creamy, and almost had a chocolate flavor to it from the dark roast. We also were quick to order homemade donuts because we had heard that they're a must. It turns out that we snagged the last two of the day at 11:20am, so keep that in mind if you want donuts! They were SO good - coated in cinnamon sugar, and the dough itself is not hyper sweet. Perfectly balanced. For entrees, we shared a bagel board (two bagels, two types of cream cheese, and all the classic toppings such as capers and onions, plus lox) and a side of smashed potatoes. We waited for a while, probably the only downside of our meal, but we chalked it up to a busy and packed Sunday morning and the food all being fresh and made to order. Once our food arrived, we dove in and enjoyed every part of the brunch. The bagels are outstanding - some of the best I've ever had. The toppings were fresh and snappy, and the cream cheeses were perfect (we tried the dill and the jalapeño). Then, the breakfast potatoes, oh my goodness... they are fried and craggy and salty and delicious, in a bowl with aioli and chives. Perfect in every way. The oil/vinegar was so acidic/vinegar-heavy, I choked on it. I ordered the cucumber salad. The cucumber was pickled. This was not mentioned as the preparation on the menu. While Kirby cucumbers are used in pickling, this seems to be an oversight on the menu. Though the dill dressing was good, it was relatively inaccessible underneath the plethora of chickpeas, rendering the taste into the bland category. My husband ordered the NY strip steak. We could have ordered it anywhere else for half the price and it would have been just as good. His rice pilaf was mediocre and in my opinion, overcooked and mushy. Overall, we will not be returning. I sooo wanted to love this place and write a solid review, but I just cannot. Came here this past weekend for brunch and although the space is super-cute, cozy and interesting the food service left a lot to be desired. We all ordered warm coffee drinks and then placed our meal options, then sat back to chat and wait for items to arrive. At some point, the server told us that two (of our five) coffees were "in the window" and she'd bring everything out shortly. Well, it was a fair amount of time before she showed up with all drinks and three of the five items were now room temperature. Maybe just bring out the hot stuff when you can? Same story with our meals...kitchen was backed up and it took quite a while for the dishes to show up at the table, but they were all in fact delivered at the same time. My daughter and I decided to get unique items and split them both...breakfast carbonara and short rib hash. I had a few issues with each dish. Although the breakfast carbonara was fairly tasty with its creamy parmesan sauce and fried chunks of bacon, the rigatoni noodles were an odd choice as the thin carbonara sauce did not stick to the pasta all that well which is why a more traditional flat noodle seems to work better in this recipe. As for the short rib hash, it was more like a plate of short ribs chunks along with potato chunks atop a thick ,sweet onion-based gravy. I would have thought a more savory gravy would be better with this dish...my wife also ordered this dish and she seemed to enjoy it. Wish the beef chunks were a bit more moist as well. As I've said, everything seemed just a bit off. I am appreciative of establishments attempting to put their own mark on a dish, giving it a twist or something out of the ordinary, but for me these preparations missed the mark. read more

I don't write a lot of reviews, and I don't enjoy writing negative ones -- I know places can have an off night. But here's my experience The food was decent, but nothing particularly memorable. Unfortunately, there were a few service missteps that impacted our experience. My mom specifically requested her chicken to have the gravy on the side due to a dietary restriction, but it arrived with gravy already on it. While our server was friendly, we were never offered a second round of drinks once our meal arrived. The most disappointing part was being told--right as our dessert was served--that another party was waiting for our table and that the check would be brought immediately.
