Came back for another visit. Hemlock House continues to deliver an upscale, delicious meal. We shared 4 small plates and one large plate and were satisfied and not overstuffed! The kale salad was dressed well (I hate a salad with too much dressing!), and the almonds, grapes and avacado worked well in it. The broccolini was good--I'm not sure my palate was good enough to taste some of the ingredients! The malfatti was unique! Ricotta dumplings! Yummy. I was worried (not really) that the sauce Americain was going to be velveeta cheese! It wasn't, but it was a yellow cheese sauce. Crème fraiche on the side and Little bits of langoustine to round it off. Yummy! Then we had crab and bacon hush puppies. I didn't know what to expect, and they were delicious with a spicy ají verde sauce to go with it! Finally we had nouja cavatelli. I never make pasta with lemon and it was a nice flavor. Hemlock House was one of the first places I visited when I moved to Pittsburgh, and it instantly became a favorite. I went during the lunch hour after work, and the food was incredible. The pasta was outstanding with the perfect mix of sauce, cheese, and just the right amount of spice. Every bite tasted balanced and full of flavor. The broccolini was another highlight. The seasoning blend they used was so good, and the texture was exactly how broccolini should be. It was crispy, crunchy, warm, and honestly one of the best sides I have had in a while. Hemlock House is definitely a great date night spot. Some days it feels calm and intimate, and other days it has a more lively vibe, depending on the time you go. I really enjoyed my experience here, and it is absolutely a place I will continue returning to. read more

Walked in here disappointed as I came in for the uni bucatini... however, I came in during Saturday brunch :( I left very satisfied after ordering the Crab Benedict... if can be a bit salty for some but very good flavor and plenty of crab. The salad was also delicious... I think it was a sesame dressing that came along with it. Update: had to come back for the uni bucatini! It was not as creamy as I would've liked but still pretty good. Also has the Foie gras nigiri and it was so fatty and buttery... delicious! read more

Wow!! This place is so good. Stumbled upon this place while walking around Edgewood and the menu looked pretty good so decided to stop in. I was blown away with how good everything was. The cocktails were great and tasty and used some fun ingredients and liqueurs. The fried smelts were incredibly crispy. The beef tartare was packed with flavor. The Mac n cheese was some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant with the smoked Gouda, lardons and crispy parsnip chips. This place will be my go to in Edgewood! The service was friendly and fast and they have a few high top tables to eat outside. read more

Braved a snow squall to try Hemlock House for the first time a few weeks ago and it was worth it! I ordered a painkiller and it came in such a cute Tiki cup! And it was a delicious drink, perfectly sweet for an early afternoon brunch. We ordered the crab & bacon hushpuppies as a starter and these were SO good. Hushpuppies are often too dense for my liking but these were perfect. And the sauce it came with was excellent, and added a little kick of spice! My friend and I both got omelettes. Warning these omelettes are huge!! I got the Smoked Gouda one which I really enjoyed! It came with a side of breakfast potatoes which I thought were maybe slightly over salted, but that's just my own taste! I will definitely be back to check out their dinner menu, maybe when it isn't snowing sideways outside. But I'm sure it would be worth it even if it was! read more

Very nice spot for a nice meal. The place itself has a great atmosphere, just a tad upscale but not anywhere near snobby. The food is good quality, although sometimes a bit expensive. I got to try the fried smelts and the It's Green burger. Both were really good. It's rare to find fried smelts anywhere in the area (last time I had them was in Spain). But here, they do a very nice job of making them. A good amount of lemon provided, relatively crispy battering, and fresh fish that doesn't taste too fishy. They also had a pretty flavorful sauce with it (possibly tartar but I'm not sure). The burger was also great. They cooked it perfectly for my liking. The green sauce wasn't too spicy and overall the burger just tasted balanced. The fires it was served with were also wonderful: quite crispy and salty. All in all, well done to this place. It's a nice atmosphere and they serve great food. Would recommend. read more

Can you say Crab & Bacon Hush Puppies? Come on man! If you love crab and bacon, these Hush Puppies are for you! My daughter Muff and my sister Luch and I are always on the lookout for good places for brunch. So when one of us heard about Hemlock House and what was on their brunch menu, we had to try this place out. It's a pretty unassuming restaurant on a main thoroughfare and you would never know that it's like a little hidden gem. I'm a Shrimp and Grits fanatic and usually order it whenever it's available. My sister is a French Toast maniac and my daughter went light with their Blueberry Parfait. Our server couldn't have been more helpful with his suggestions and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. My only complaint is that the grits could have had a little more seasoning (I would suggest using either a vegetable or chicken stock for more favorable grits. Also maybe a little heavy cream and butter.) Other than that, we had a great meal. The French Toast was really banging and we would have loved to have pork belly or bacon as a side option, but who's complaining? All in all, we enjoyed our meals and pickiness be damned if you want some tasty brunch bites. read more

I wanted to love Hemlock House, but my experience with brunch left me feeling uncertain. I'd give a 3.5, but rounded up to a 4 because I enjoyed my meal. Though my friend and I went for brunch/lunch, I actually think that they should stick to dinner (though I actually have yet to try their dinner fare). We were the only folks dining when we went on a Saturday in the early afternoon, which isn't their fault, but certainly felt a bit awkward! My omelet was tasty (chorizo and cheese with potatoes as a side), but my friend's benedict was extremely lackluster and had a strange taste in the hollandaise sauce. Her eggs were also not runny, which feels like an essential part of a benedict. I wonder if the Sunday brunch crowd is better than Saturday, but based on what I saw, I don't know if Saturday afternoon is a great use of the staff's time and resources. I like the cool, moody, kitschy decor, with lots of homages to Twin Peaks and David Lynch, so I'll hopefully return in the autumn or winter season to match those vibes. I still see the potential and enjoyed my own meal, but I think cocktails and dinner will be the way to go next time! read more

We just happened to come here last minute due to a dinner reservation cancellation. Found this place on a recommended restaurant list and went for my friend's bday. Very unassuming restaurant, giving dive bar vibes. The menu itself, though, very innovative with some Asian and French influences. Parking is also free for 2 hours which is nice. Now to what we ordered: - here's to the admiral cocktail ($14): my friend ordered this cocktail. Tasted like an average margarita as a gin drink. - lavender moon cocktail ($14): this one was pretty good but quite overpowered by lemon flavors. The lavender itself was strong too but could've been overpowering too -foie gras nigiri ($13): one of the best things we've ever had. Foie gras usually has some metallic taste, but this was absolutely delicious. It's with a fig shoyu sauce that's a bit on the salty side but so delicious with the foie gras nigiri - compressed watermelon ($8): seasonal item that was such an amazing palette cleanser. We got it in between the nigiri and the uni pasta which was perfect. Defjn recommend doing that to cut the fattiness of the two dishes - broccolini ($12): there is anchovy aioli used along with other seasoning. This was some of the best broccolini I've ever had. Almost meaty tasting. Definitely recommend but not quite a vegetarian dish - mushroom toast ($13): this was delicious, but not one of the standout dishes for us. The onsen egg we loved. The toast could maybe be toasted longer as the bread was a bit soggy by the time it got to us. Otherwise, delicious - crab and bacon hush puppies ($16): best hush puppies we've ever had. The crab was very fresh tasting and the aoili with it was perfect. Everytime I took a bite, I wanted more. Usually hush puppies have too much corn bread and not enough protein, but this one definitely has enough protein -frog legs lyonnaise ($18): probably my least favorite dish but still good. It reminded us of lemon pepper wings, and the flavor did grow on us. The frog legs were a little on the tough side but it was still tasty - uni bucatini ($33): our star. It was not too overpowering with uni, very light and balanced dish. Absolutely delicious. We cleaned the plate absolutely clean. - gingerbread dessert ($10): we were not initially going to order this, but our waitress said it was her favorite, so of course we went all out then. It was very light but moist cake. The caramel was so delicious and light too. Not too sweet - rotating cannoli (miso caramel $9): we were so excited hearing the seasonal flavor. It was a little on the sweet side but delicious. The topping on the sides, we could've used throughout the cannoli cream to cut through the sweetness All in all, an absolutely amazing meal from start to finish. The cocktails were probably our least favorite, but we're here for the food anyways. Will absolutely come back to try everything! Wait staff were great as well. read more

Ambiance was a chill pub vibe and the service was fast and friendly. The waiter came by after each dish to ask for our opinion and gave us recommendations. The food, however, was underwhelming. I was excited to try it out because the menu looked interesting. [Foie Gras Nigiri]The rice for the nigiri was stale and cold, probably just out of the fridge. Not sushi rice at all. The foie gras was extremely fat and oily. [Uni Bucatini][Pumpkin Gnudi] The uni was shipped from California, but I felt it tasted really fishy. There also wasn't that much in the pasta. Definitely was not worth the $32. Both pastas tasted nearly the same and tasted just like Kraft's Mac and cheese. I think because the sauce was too cheesy, sweet, and thick. The bread on the side was pretty good though. For drinks, we got two non alcoholic beverages that weren't on the menu, but the syrup wasn't really mixed in well so towards the bottom of the drink it was really sweet and thick. read more

Food was all good: - fried artichokes: not too heavy in a tasty sauce - shishito peppers: fine, nothing to write home about - crab hush puppies: I mean, what's not to like?? - mushroom toast: fine, not super memorable - onion soup: everything you could want, plus delicious toppings - Gouda mac: SUPER rich but very flavorful. That cheese just coats everything in rich meltiness. A bit of confusion with our orders and some lag between service but it was a full house and nothing too bad. Four of us stopped by Hemlock House on a Tuesday evening shortly before 6pm and we were able to be seated right away. The inside is cozy with a variety of bar seating, booths, and chairs. I liked how they had a bunch of decorations up for Halloween Service was friendly and prompt and our server came back to check on us at good intervals. The food came out pretty quickly (which makes sense since got there on the early side for dinner). The mac and cheese was INCREDIBLE and so creamy and amazing. The Gouda stuck nicely to the noodles and the pork lardons added some nice texture and flavor. I also really loved the crab and corn hush puppies and the aji verde sauce nicely complimented it. I thought the uni bucatini was interesting in terms of flavor and texture and the artichokes were decent. The mushroom toast was a little bland for me but the bread for the toast itself was pretty good. Our desserts were all delicious - the only critique I have there was that the pistachio ice cream was a little on the icy side. Overall, a good experience and I still can't stop thinking about the mac and cheese and the hush puppies. I would come back! read more

My siblings were back home for the holidays and requested we go out somewhere we could only find in Pittsburgh. At the suggestion of the bartender at Applebees (LOL) we found ourselves at Hemlock House. It was the absolute perfect vibe for our night out. The bartenders were awesome and even offered to make us an eggnog cocktail not yet on the menu. I'm so glad we ended up here. I think it may be a new after Thanksgiving tradition! read more

Updated review since coming for dinner on a Sunday night when our other plans fell through, and neither of us wanted to cook. We had a GREAT time sitting at a high top by the bar. I enjoyed my cocktail. The kale salad was delicious and so large we got four servings out of it (one each for dinner, and again with our leftovers). Look at hubby mugging over this enormous tower of food that is the Dante's Beak "handheld" with a Nashville hot chicken thigh. (It is very hot--they're not lying.) And then there were the pumpkin gnudi: so soft, so creamy, so pillowy. Alas, they didn't travel or heat up well, but in the moment, they were heavenly. Prices were fair for service, food, drink, and ambience. Men's room is at the back, women's room is on the righthand side of the dining room. We'll definitely return when we're in Regent Square again. read more

Tried out this new restaurant in regent square for brunch with friends. We arrived right when it opened at 10:00 a.m. on a Sunday. We did make a reservation but it was not busy at all so probably no need at least at this early phase of their operation. Our waiter was very friendly and was nice enough to make a fresh pot of coffee for me. Their menu is perfect in my opinion, somewhere between comforting diner food, offering such as biscuits and gravy or shrimp and grits, and bougie brunch with handhelds and omelettes accompanied by a side salad. We were disappointed that they were out of mushrooms so some of the choices were not available, even though we were the first customers of the day. I tried the gouda omelette which also included veggies and lardons. It came with home fries on the side which honestly were the stars of the show. They were so crispy and perfectly fried, perfectly salted - some of the best fried potatoes I've EVER had. The omelette was also pretty yummy, plentiful portion, with a strong smoked gouda cheese flavor. I'm not sure the lardons were the best addition? Just my personal preference but they were a little chunky and not the right texture for the omelette. We didn't order cocktails this time but they offer their full cocktail menu at brunch which is pretty cool. Definitely will be returning for drinks very soon. I'm excited to return and try out more of the menu, although I will always be ordering those amazing home fries!! read more

I was so excited to see a new restaurant coming to the neighborhood! I've had dinner at hemlock house once so far but have gotten drinks at the bar a few times now. I went to dinner with two other friends the first week the restaurant was open. It was busy but we were able to get a seat right away. I got a chicken sandwich which was pretty good. It was also huge! And reasonably priced. The service friendly but incredibly slow but I chalk that up to it just opening. I definitely want to come back and try their brunch! read more

Mixed Experience - We really wanted to love this place--the menu sounded creative and promising. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. We had to go looking for our server three different times: once to place our food order, again when we wanted to order more drinks, and a third time just to get the check. It took long enough that we skipped dessert altogether, even though we had originally planned to stay longer. Several of the dishes we were excited to try, including the Duck Burger, were already sold out--odd considering it was only 7pm on a Saturday. That was disappointing. I ended up with the Jeremy Burger, which was just okay. The mushroom toast sounded better than it tasted--it was unfortunately pretty bland. Hemlock House has potential, and maybe we caught them on an off night, but the combination of lackluster service and missing menu items made this a mediocre experience. read more

I've been here few times for dinner over the course of six months. The food and cocktails are always incredible and the ambiance is chill and cozy. The only downfall is the service. Waiting 15+ minutes with an empty drink is just leaving money on the table. I would easily order 3-4 drinks if the server came around more often but only get around to ordering 1. I'd been meaning to stop in and check out Hemlock House for some time. I popped in for a nightcap last night and I was pleasantly surprised at the warm ambiance (I loved the old Map Room) and how different it is from most bars in the area. I like the music and the fact that there are no televisions in the space. It feels like an old-time neighborhood pub where you go to unwind and get some excellent food and conversation. You don't have to scream at each other or wonder if your date is gazing at you or the Steelers. I didn't try the food, yet. But, I will another time. The liquor license is in limbo and should be coming soon, so they are operating using "pop up bar" beers and liquors. You can't get wine and their selection is limited to what they can get from whatever local vendors they are partnering with. I will say that the bartender seemed to be overwhelmed with dirty bar glasses. It could be that the bar was slammed before I came in and he didn't have time to tidy up. But, he seemed new and my drink was excellent. A good craft cocktail takes a few minutes to concoct. The food that I did see come out from the kitchen looked great and I am excited to give it a try. I hope that Hemlock House does well. I think that it's an asset to Regent Square! read more

First visit to Hemlock House last night and I was so impressed. Our host and server, Zach, took extra time to explain the menu and answer all of our questions. The place got busy but we still had amazing service and very short waits for our cocktail reorders. Every single thing we ordered (hush puppies, beef carpaccio, cheese curds, uni bucatini, steak, and lasagna) was excellent. The gingerbread dessert is a must have. Cocktails were imaginative and delicious. I haven't been this pleased with a Pittsburgh restaurant in a long time. It can get a little loud when full, but a full house means they are doing it right and keeps them in business. I'll take a little noise to keep this quality of food coming! read more

Tried the Corpse Reviver #2 at Hemlock House. It was refreshing, but the lemon really dominated and overshadowed the gin, Lillet, and absinthe. The beauty of this drink is in being able to taste each layer, not just the citrus. With the lemon pulled back a bit and the balance adjusted, this could easily be a standout cocktail. read more

I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day! We heard there was a Twin Peaks-David Lynch themed restaurant and had to go. Making a reservation was super easy and our waiter, Zack, was FANTASTIC. We would have had a lesser evening if not for Zack talking to us and constantly checking on us. He was the best waiter I've ever had. AND, not to mention, the food was incredible. The crab & bacon hush puppies were amazing, but our main dish was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. Zack told us that the lasagna was just put on the menu last week, and I hope it stays forever. It was ABSOLUTELY incredible, and worth the comparably short wait for such top tier food. Fabulous, memorable dinner here the other night - a creative foodie experience that will soon be repeated if I have anything to say about it! We entered this cozy establishment on a cold night, and the staff was welcoming- as was the atmosphere. Dark walls, comfy furniture, funny, vintage tchotchkes adorn the walls & the shelves and an inviting bar spread out before us in a fairly small room. We chose a seat at the bar. The cocktails and craft beers are clearly the specialty here, though, my husband and I are wine drinkers and chose a couple of glasses of red wine (though we'll return for a Belgian or 2!). Both were pretty good. The the creative food from the chef here is the absolute star attraction, and our experience proved that. We started with crab and bacon hush puppies. The aji verdi sauce was perfect, and the tasty bonito flakes dancing atop the piping hot dish were such a treat. Our fave dish! The kale salad was fresh and bright w/ punches of orange & grapes, perfectly crunchy Marcona almonds & flakes of grana. I will be trying to duplicate this though I'm sure I won't come close. We were pretty full and so decided to share one main dish - the pumpkin gnudi. Those ricotta and semolina dumplings positively melt in your mouth - and there's swimming in a decadent brown butter, sage, pumpkin cream sauce that's just dreamy. There were so many other things we wanted to try. I'm not even a mac & cheese, gal, but the guy ordered it next to me and I was ready to steal that dish. It looks so good! I personally plan to try the uni pasta with stracciatelli cream sauce the next time I go. The bartender said it was his favorite. The food came out promptly, and the service was good though the bartender was a little bit scattered. By the time we left at 7:15 PM, the place was fairly full, which is so wonderful to see on an early weekday night in Regent Square.
