Located on the Border of Oakland and Shadyside. Multiple visits across the last few years. Bar on one side, dining room opposite. Gastropub feel with deeply solid kitchen. The pickled items are all done in house, and menu/kitchen are very thoughtful on how they execute. They do the pickling well, and they incorporate their ingredients into the dishes without making them feel unbalanced. Some specifics: Chicken fried pickles: Great ratio of batter to pickle. Generally, I think execution of pickled spears versus chips is fraught with peril. ButterJoint does these perfectly. These remain excellent and an unequivocal "get again" dish. Crispy chicken sandwich: chicken thighs done in one of the House brines, then battered and fried. This is a generous sandwich with two thighs. The batter is light and perfect and perfectly adherent. Kitchen cooked these pieces perfectly; no overdone portions. The tallow fries served as a side remain excellent, and the serving is very generous. "You can't eat just one." Pork belly sandwich: what a completely fun bite! Generous serving of pork belly, crispy on the outside and melting internally on a perfectly toasted roll. The condiments on this sandwich are perfect. The brunch burger is excellent. The egg is hard cooked so it doesn't come apart on the sandwich. M got the corned beef hash; the brisket on it is absolutely amazing, and there is a very nice grill on the potatoes. The poached egg on top is a complete delight. This is one of the better hashes that I have had. The falafel is fantastic. Well seasoned, perfectly cooked. The goat cheese crust with hot pepper jelly is an unexpected treat. Pickle shrimp are fun. The Mississippi comeback sauce is basically a remolade or maybe big Mac sauce. Would totally have again looking for a little cold shrimpy bite. We have never walked away disappointed by the menu or the kitchen. Good bar program, good draught list. Consistently gracious front of house team. Great for lunch or dinner, couples or families. Great spot for some American food and a solid lunch. That's what I came here for, at least. Some solid outside seating area as well, but I went inside this time. Got to try their chicken sandwich and vinegar pie. The chicken sandwich came with a garlic sauce (toum) and fresh vegetables on their signature milk bread. Needless to say, the bun was amazing. The toum was great too, perfectly garlicky. And the chicken was delicious, with a solid portion. A bit on the expensive side though. The vinegar pie sounded super unique and intriguing so I gave that a shot. So glad I did! This is delicious. I can't even really describe it; there's a tiny note of acidity to it, but it's also super sweet. A nice little brown topping as well. It's just really good and you should try it. Enjoyed my time at this restaurant while visiting Pittsburgh. Not busy when we arrived on Saturday at 2, and we sat outside. Server was attentive and able to answer questions. I ordered the cantaloupe cobbler drink and I was honestly a bit, disappointed by it. It didn't taste like cantaloupe at all, and it was topped with an orange which was kind of odd. Everything else was great, though we shared the corn ribs as well as the Raclette. She did bring me some gluten-free bread for the Raclette. Really yummy appetizers and didn't have enough room for a main dish, but there are a few things. I would definitely try if I go back. Butterjoint is set in the Oakland area amongst the hustle and bustle of college life. The restaurant is very large and very accommodating. We had a group of 17 people, and they easily were able to get us in! There's a parking garage across the street, so parking was not super difficult. Our group had mimosas and cocktails, which were delightful. Many of us ordered multiple dishes. For my meal, I ordered the quiche as well as the crumpets and jam. Both were tasty and delicious. My husband ordered the brown sugar pop tart, French onion soup, and their famous burger. He enjoyed every aspect of his meal. Our group also tried the pancakes as well as the crab benedict. Both of those dishes were so-so, and I wouldn't get them again! They have a little bakery/cafe on site where you can order pastries. They are also known for their vinegar pie, so of course, I had to try it! It was definitely a different flavor, and I am glad that I tried it. It tasted like a less sweet version of a pecan pie. A friend and I stopped by on Thursday night shortly after seven and were able to get a table right away. The inside consists of a bar area and an area with tables and booths. Our server was great at checking in on us and not rushing us because we yapped for hours. They also have handheld devices and can take Apple Pay which is great. Their house cocktails were all pretty unique and interesting, my favorite was the sage and grapefruit one, nice strong flavors. Fancy chicken sandwich was fantastic, chicken fried perfectly with kimchi and sauce with a little kick, definitely recommend. The tallow fries are also worth it, very crispy with good flavor. Getting any of their sandwiches would be my recommendation honestly. On the other hand, I think their pierogis are fine, pretty solid but a little over priced at $4 per Perogi for the shared plate. I placed an online lunch takeout order recently for a veggie burger with fries. Based on a special instruction I added to the order, the manager called to ask if I was vegan before they made the order since their bun and aioli have egg. We were sat at a small table by a pillar, truly the only disappointing part of the meal, would have liked a bigger table but for 2 it worked! I cannot say enough about the french fries. Easily the best french fries that I have ever had! Mussels were large and the broth was so flavorful! I think they do a great job with their bartenders choice cocktail every time! We ordered some apps for the table. We ordered the 'Lumps' which are Japanese milk bread rolls and the Falafel, which comes with a cucumber salad. For my entree, I ordered the butterjoint burger. It is served with their tallow fries. Our bartender was very friendly and quickly took our drink orders. He checked in with us regularly, and we ended up having a great conversation about Coldplaygate. I suppose they were going for an eclectic vibe? We got the bread and butter, and it was delightful. The butter was made with cranberry, coriander, and a hint of either lemon or lime, I think. From the wait staff to the chef coming to our table to check in and tell us about the specials to the actual dishes themselves, my entire party walked away raving. Vinegar Pie is the best reason to dine here but there are others. The Onion Soup is another solid winner. Our server Alyssa was exceptional. The room is pleasant and full on this Saturday evening. The signature burger was not to my taste but i'm guessing its uniqueness will more than satisfy others. Parking is a challenge with the garage across the street giving mixed messages as to whether or not you are welcomed. Arrive early to give yourself some parking options.
