Located on the Border of Oakland and Shadyside. Multiple visits across the last few years. Bar on one side, dining room opposite. Gastropub feel with deeply solid kitchen. The pickled items are all done in house, and menu/kitchen are very thoughtful on how they execute. They do the pickling well, and they incorporate their ingredients into the dishes without making them feel unbalanced. Some specifics: Chicken fried pickles: Great ratio of batter to pickle. Generally, I think execution of pickled spears versus chips is fraught with peril. ButterJoint does these perfectly. These remain excellent and an unequivocal "get again" dish. Crispy chicken sandwich: chicken thighs done in one of the House brines, then battered and fried. This is a generous sandwich with two thighs. The batter is light and perfect and perfectly adherent. Kitchen cooked these pieces perfectly; no overdone portions. The tallow fries served as a side remain excellent, and the serving is very generous. "You can't eat just one." Pork belly sandwich: what a completely fun bite! Generous serving of pork belly, crispy on the outside and melting internally on a perfectly toasted roll. The condiments on this sandwich are perfect. The brunch burger is excellent. The egg is hard cooked so it doesn't come apart on the sandwich. M got the corned beef hash; the brisket on it is absolutely amazing, and there is a very nice grill on the potatoes. The poached egg on top is a complete delight. This is one of the better hashes that I have had. The falafel is fantastic. Well seasoned, perfectly cooked. The goat cheese crust with hot pepper jelly is an unexpected treat. Pickle shrimp are fun. The Mississippi comeback sauce is basically a remolade or maybe big Mac sauce. Would totally have again looking for a little cold shrimpy bite. We have never walked away disappointed by the menu or the kitchen. Good bar program, good draught list. Consistently gracious front of house team. Great spot for some American food and a solid lunch. That's what I came here for, at least. And the chicken was delicious, with a solid portion. A bit on the expensive side though. The vinegar pie sounded super unique and intriguing so I gave that a shot. So glad I did! This is delicious. I can't even really describe it; there's a tiny note of acidity to it, but it's also super sweet. A nice little brown topping as well. It's just really good and you should try it. Butterjoint is set in the Oakland area amongst the hustle and bustle of college life. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is very large and very accommodating. We had a group of 17 people, and they easily were able to get us in![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's a parking garage across the street, so parking was not super difficult. Our group had mimosas and cocktails, which were delightful. Many of us ordered multiple dishes. For my meal, I ordered the quiche as well as the crumpets and jam. Both were tasty and delicious. My husband ordered the brown sugar pop tart, French onion soup, and their famous burger. He enjoyed every aspect of his meal. Our group also tried the pancakes as well as the crab benedict. Both of those dishes were so-so, and I wouldn't get them again! They have a little bakery/cafe on site where you can order pastries. They are also known for their vinegar pie, so of course, I had to try it! It was definitely a different flavor, and I am glad that I tried it. It tasted like a less sweet version of a pecan pie. I've visited Butterjoint for dinner in the past and had a great experience! Very friendly staff, plus delicious drinks and food (especially the pierogies). I placed an online lunch takeout order recently for a veggie burger with fries. Based on a special instruction I added to the order, the manager called to ask if I was vegan before they made the order since their bun and aioli have egg. Although I'm not, I was so appreciative of the effort they put in to make sure that the order fit my dietary needs! Also, the burger and fries were both cooked to perfection and so tasty. I think they do a great job with their bartenders choice cocktail every time! We ordered some apps for the table. We ordered the 'Lumps' which are Japanese milk bread rolls and the Falafel, which comes with a cucumber salad. For my entree, I ordered the butterjoint burger. It is served with their tallow fries. We stopped into Butterjoint for a quick bite and drink, and it was delightful. The bar lighting is very moody, and the music is great. Our bartender was very friendly and quickly took our drink orders. He checked in with us regularly, and we ended up having a great conversation about Coldplaygate. From the wait staff to the chef coming to our table to check in and tell us about the specials to the actual dishes themselves, my entire party walked away raving. I think this restaurant is incredibly consistent with regard to quality, menu, and the food is absolutely delicious. This is not easy, especially with so many great options in Pittsburgh now. I came here for lunch with my good friend, and we each had the hearty salad. Mine with shrimp, and his with chicken. It was absolutely delicious ! I live their licked shrimp so much. The burger was dry, and the bread wasn't fresh or flavorful. I wouldn't mind if it was half the price, but for $23, I think Butterjoint can do better. It really did feel like fancy McDonalds. I like that their ketchup and aioli are homemade. They fry their fries in tallow which is cool. I wish they did brunch on Saturdays too.
