Cappy's is a gem in Shadyside. I've come for dinner and, now, breakfast. This area has several places to eat, all are good. Cappy's deserves to be at the top with any of the others. It's a cool local dive bar in Shadyside. Not the vibe you would expect on Walnut Street and yet somehow it fits. Definitely made for the people who live in Shadyside that have been in Shadyside for a long time. Drinks service was quick. Seemed like the bartenders were familiar with some of the people at the bar, definitely a place with regulars. The drinks are cheap! Can't beat that. I do not try to food but I'm looking at other peoples dishes, it didn't look half bad for a dive bar. There's a limited amount of seating at the bar, well, I went during a Steelers game so that might've been the reason. They did play the sound during the game which was much appreciated. Bathroom is located downstairs. The women's bathroom is pretty clean. All-around cool dive bar to go to if that's your type of vibe. Nothing crazy, nothing flashy, it is what it is. read more

Great place to pop into on a cold and rainy night. It's warm and crowded inside. The burger was perfect, exactly what a cheeseburger should be. I love going to Cappy's for their Friday night dive bar karaoke! The environment is so fun, the emcee is funny & gets the crowd going, and drinks are inexpensive (especially if you stick to beer). The karaoke is run through YouTube, so you can pick pretty much any song you want! The only downside is that there is no waitstaff, so you have to get all your drinks at the bar (even if you're at a table in the karaoke area) which can sometimes get crowded. The server did the best she could, nothing on her. The kitchen gave me the hard outside part of the onion in my salad, couldn't chew a bunch of pieces. Used to be a cool local bar...stopped in after a few years away...ordered a draft which was way too strong..yeah I should have asked for a taste first...but the bartender was such a B I doubt she would have given me a taste...I asked the server ( who was very sweet, this review has nothing to do with her....if I could send it back for a lower ABV beer ...told her I was driving and trying be safe. Bartender said if I sent it back I'd have to pay for it. When I said to her this is the first place I've ever been to that wouldn't let you send back a beer (and trust me it doesn't happen often)...her response was a flippant,;"oh, ok." Walked in here on a whim one night and we were met with one of the most pretentious bartenders I've ever encountered. Not only was he snippy to me and my party, but seemingly everyone else in the place at the time. He pressured us into keeping our tab open to make it easier on himself, was betting customers on how old they were (by checking their IDs) , and basically added his unneeded two cents into everything else he said. Who doesn't like a cheap place for brunch? Came here on a Saturday with friends. It was decently full tho mind you, this place isn't exactly that big. The menu is fairly standard and the waitress was great, very helpful and pleasant. It felt like a pancake sort of day so I got a plate of the buttermilk pancakes with strawberries for $5 and a mimosa for $4. The pancakes were average, 3 medium sized pancakes with slices of strawberries and maple syrup added to your taste. Nothing mind blowing but come on, decent ones for $5? Yes please. I wished the mimosa had more juice in it but that's just a preference. Overall it's a nice little place for brunch. The food wasn't bad, the décor was decent and the staff was great. read more

Jeez I've been coming here since Mayor Peduto was on city council and this was his old stomping ground; still is but I'm guessing he gets here about as much as I do these days. Maybe 1-2 times a year. It was fun stopping in for a quick beer again. I really like coming here for food too. I think it's some of the best breakfast you can get in the city. The eggs are always good exactly to order and never over or under cooked. Bacon is always crisp too which I love. It's a great atmosphere with a mix of clientele from the young college students to professors, families, etc. Definitely a neighborhood gathering place. read more

The two girls serving were nice but didn't quite hit the marks as servers. They didn't check on us after a few minutes of getting our food, so we sat there with problems and lack of desired condiments such as ketchup and salsa. We never got the salsa. Neither of them addressed the entirely burnt pancake I received. We had our card our to signal that we were ready for our check, which she gave us (after we asked for it due to being tired of waiting) but she neglected to pick up the card we already had placed out for her. They had groups waiting and this clearly slowed down their turnover rate. The omelet had still raw peppers inside it and was clearly just one egg, so it easily fell apart. We ate here for brunch today. Initially we planned on somewhere else, but their menu was lacking. A yelp search brought us to nearby Cappys. Super cute dive bar. Reminds me of Nadines which is my neighborly cheers bar. We ordered mimosas to drink. They were great and strong. Many brunch places have a weak mimosa. Two gave me a buzz. I've drank an entire mimosa carafe at some places and barely caught a buzz. I ordered the Shadyside skillet which has your choice of meat, scrambled eggs, green peppers and onions all on top of home fries. It was good. The portion size was small but it was good. My bf ordered corned beef and hash which came with choice of any style eggs plus toast. Surprisingly the corn beef and hash were separate and not mixed. Again, serving size was small but it was good. Stopped in for breakfast before a Steelers game. Didn't look fancy and we weren't looking for fancy. Great selection of all your breakfast favorites. My sometimes picky son enjoyed his three large chocolate chip pancakes. My skillet with cheddar and bacon wasn't huge, but it filled me up. Not usually a big fan of green peppers, but these were done right and gave it a nice crunch. Comes with toast and those assortment of little Smuckers jelly packets. This was fine with me as I like a simple diner style breakfast. They always have soccer on in the mornings/afternoons on Saturday, so that's pretty cool if you're a fan and can't find a place to watch. Their breakfasts were simple but good - I always get eggs, toast, and home fries. I was surprised to see they had shredded hash browns as their home fries which are my favorite and hard to find! We were in Oakland to take home some of our student's belongings before the official end of the semester. Went to 2 other restaurants, around 3 pm, both places had a 20-30 minutes wait. We found that out after waiting to be acknowledged by staff for 10 minutes. Called Cappy's and asked if they had a table available for 3. The man who answered the phone was very pleasant and said 'yeah, we can do that'. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with a smile and told someone would be right with us. Our lunch at Cappy's was an absolute delight. My husband had the Alamo and said it was one of the most unique and best sandwiches he's ever had. He ordered sweet potato waffle fries. They were crispy and tasty. We found out that they are air fried - an added bonus. I ordered the Tuscan Turkey wrap. It is a sandwich I will remember for a long time to come because it was so unique and delicious. The server, Mike, was attentive and friendly. Came to Cappy's for our work holiday party! Walked in and loved the intimate feel of the place. It's such a down home yinzer bar in Shadyside. Such a contrast to many of the places on Walnut street. It really feels like an authentic Pittsburgh place. The staff was very attentive and prompt. The drinks were really strong which is always a plus. Their perogies are really good! They had an entire spread for the party but I certainly like the stuffed one with cheese and onion the best.
