Good for watching a game or just simply having a drink to unwind. I ordered the hot wings that came with carrots.... Pretty good! I also ordered a Henny sour which came in a tall glass (to my surprise but no complaints about that). Depending on the night and time of day this place can get pretty packed. This is located inside the historic William Penn Omni hotel where I was staying for an event. It just so happened to coincide with downtown Pittsburgh's St Patty Day celebration, so instead of venturing out on a Saturday for lunch and competing with crowds, I stayed at the hotel and wanted to bring food to my room for some peace and quiet. Things were a little hectic as it was busy for the celebration so it took me some time to figure out where to sit (it was open seating) and then to be served (the table next to me fortunately sent the waitress my way when they got their check). All in all, despite the craziness, the waitress was very nice and once I placed my order it came out fast. I took it to my room. I ordered the OWP Club, without tomato. For your side you have some choices .. fries, sweet potato fries, chips, salad, etc. I chose sweet potato fries. They were very good! My club was average but a nice hearty size and I really enjoyed the bread. Overall, average tap room look and menu and food quality. Not a place I would say "oh my gosh you need to go there!" Located inside the William Penn Omni hotel, a quaint little bar area that has plenty of TV's and tables along with a bar area. It's not overly huge, but very good space that is comfortable and convenient if staying at the hotel. Super cool decor! They do offer food - we didn't order but saw some terrific dishes being delivered to nearby tables. We did order drinks. Had a Lemon Drop martini, Manhattans, and a Sidecar. All were delicious. I was visiting from out of town and had been traveling all day. When I arrived at my hotel, I noticed that only a few places were open past 10 PM. That's when I found The Tap Room. The restaurant is on the smaller side, but that didn't bother me. It was a bit loud, but the atmosphere felt lively. The service was excellent--our server was very welcoming and friendly. The food was amazing! I highly recommend the chicken sandwich; it came with mushrooms and a generous portion of fries. It looks like you're walking in to an old London pub. It's quiet, private, with the best service possible. Ron is the primary waiter and should really be hired as Pittsburgh's premier Docent because he gives the absolute best advice of where to go in the city for anything! The food is perfect for where you are. Super delicious, giant chicken Caesar salad, burgers, sandwiches, gumbo and so on. We came here in the evening as they were about to close (which was not that late BTW). The interior of the bar is not that large, but the lighting is bright and has some high top tables. The selection of beers was decent, but I ended up getting a cocktail. they also have a unique "Beer Cocktail" section, but none of them jumped out at me. Our server was quick to get our drink order, but slow to deliver. To her credit, she seemed to be the only one serving people in the entire place. Not sure if someone called in sick, or if they let someone go home early since it was getting close to closing time. This place is a hidden gem in downtown. It doesn't have its own website and the menu has to be found on William Penn's website. It is also easy to miss when walking on Grant. Despite all this they serve some great food for lunch and dinner. I will say that even the sandwiches here are very pricey, but for the high price tag you get some of the best quality bar type food around. I have had several things here, but my favorites are the Hogs Pond burger and the fish and chips. The flavor of the burger, bacon, and avocado mayo taste amazing together. I'm not sure what blend they use, but the beef is very juicy as flavorful. It has also been cooked to a perfect medium rare each time I have ordered it. The smokehouse burger is also a great option. The fish and chips are my other favorite, mainly because you can tell they are hand breaded which makes a big difference. The batter is flavorful enough that it provides a great exterior, but not so thick that it overwhelms the fish. If you are looking for a cheap lunch, there are other options, but if you want a delicious meal I would definitely recommend giving this place a try. read more

Overall, an okay experience. In my multiple times at the William Penn, I've never been to the Tap Room, but I've always heard about how great their burgers are. Went to the Tap Room with a group of 4 before a night out. The atmosphere is like an old school pub, but I feel like they could do more with it. We sat ourselves and placed our drink order. I liked the fact that they had 2 different pour sizes for glasses of wine, but their beer selection was pretty basic. A friend ordered a Moscow mule, and it was pretty bad... like order-a-new-drink bad. We settled on nachos to start with; instead of tortilla chips, they use housemade chips which was an nice twist on the traditional appetizer. The boys decided on burgers while the girls got salads. In retrospect I probably should have gotten a burger since my salad was drenched in dressing, and I've always heard good things about the Tap Rooms burgers. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. I would stop back to the Tap Room in the future, but I wouldn't necessarily seek it out. read more

Probably the most mundane of the William Penn's food and drink venues, and bearing in mind it's a single kitchen for all of them and for room service, it's a decent version of the bar-and-burger hotel-style TGIF experience. It's a bit tucked away so it's possible it will have seats available when other things in the area are full, and it was open pretty late (2 am I think) when a lot of the other area bars had shut down hours earlier on a weeknight. It is hotel-pricey, though, so I can't give it the full endorsement of four stars. The Terrace Room and Speakeasy are a bit more unique if you have to make a choice of one during a shorter visit to the hotel, although the Tap Room is much better for a "meetup" with people coming from multiple locations and converging at asynchronous times. read more

However, I ended up really enjoying my time here, and I will be back to try the rest of the entrees. The staff (at least our waitress) was polite, professional, and accommodating. The dining room is small, but quant and lively. While I enjoyed the experience, I didn't love my entree. I tried the rib tacos, which weren't as great as I thought they'd be. Although they looked very appealing, the pico de gallo they used didn't work and detracted from the taste. Also, they were slightly dry and tough. To be fair, I still enjoyed them, but they could have been better. Also, it took some time to get our food. I would say about 25 minutes from order.
