They were hosting a fish fry fundraiser for St. Stanislaus Kostka Stained Glass Window. We came for lunch on Friday, and there were plenty of tables available. You order at the bar and they bring the food to your table. I got a fish sandwich with haluski and coleslaw. The service was great, and the food didn't take very long to come. Since it was at a restaurant, I expected it to taste better than regular church fish fry. But it wasn't very notable. It did make me intrigued about the restaurant though. Overall, it wasn't the best fish fry I've had, but I appreciated their heart and service. We actually stayed a while and they didn't rush us out. Well to start, we were Sat for 10minutes and just had waters. Then once we ordered our food and drinks together, it took 15minutes at least to get the drinks. We chose Cellar on Penn as a new place for an informal Sunday dinner. We had reservations, but they weren't necessary since the place was totally empty when we arrived. We were seated immediately and ordered the first round of drinks quickly. Due to the empty dining room we were cautious in ordering, avoiding seafood and anything that would be complicated to prepare. We both got the sliders with fries, which were very good. Since it's a wine cellar we tried a few of the many offerings. I've invested lots of money in tuition, learning about wines of the world. We tried two reds and one white, all of which were pretty decent, and the prices were very reasonable. The wines were not great, but they weren't expected to be. As a newbie to Pittsburgh, Cellar on Penn had been a go to! Denzel, Mike, and Craig have been incredibly welcoming and we are very proud to call ourself regulars to this wonderful wine bar! They have free wine tasting outside with a great variety and offer some amazing food choices to go along with the drinks. Cellar on Penn: A Masterclass in How Not to Run a Restaurant. If you've ever wanted to experience what it feels like to be stranded on a deserted island--minus the island, plus a rude waiter--then Cellar on Penn is the place for you! Let's start with the drinks. Or rather, the lack of drinks. It took over 30 minutes for our cocktails to arrive, and by the time they did, I was considering taking up meditation just to cope. But hey, at least they came--unlike our food, which was apparently being prepared by a team of invisible chefs who only cook when the planets align. We were there for over an hour before the waiter even bothered to take our food order, and then another 45 minutes passed before anything hit the table. And when it finally did? Wrong orders. Missing dishes. A complete mess. One of our party members never even got their food. Maybe it's still coming--who knows? The whole restaurant was in chaos. Every table was visibly frustrated, and at least one group had enough, dropping cash for their drinks and walking out before their food even arrived. Honestly, I wish we had done the same. Instead, we wasted over two hours only to leave hungry so we could make it to a show. And the cherry on top? When we expressed our (very valid) frustrations, our waiter rolled his eyes at us like we were inconveniencing him. Sir, you have one job. Bottom line: If you have a deep love for bad service, long wait times, and incorrect orders, Cellar on Penn is your dream destination. After getting our order wrong, twice, we could see one dish going cold on the side while the bartender ignored us and worked on his paperwork. Our side dishes never arrived. We understand that we were a big group but that is outside of that this review. We sat down and were immediately told they were out of very basic things, bread, olive oil, prosciutto, slider buns, brie MID MEAL, and I can only assume pasta half way through the meal give half of us got the same dish and it was all different pasta shapes. They said it was because they had three big parties... the restaurant was empty even with the big tables. It took far too long for us to even get seen let alone get our food. I am all for small family businesses and most of the group currently works in Food and Bev and understand it can be tricky but this is not an excuse. We had to ask several times if the stuff we ordered would be coming and every time we asked we felt we were an inconvenience just for asking for the bare minimum. As a customer service worker i know even when customers are yelling at me I cannot roll my eyes but this doesn't seem to be standard here. We lost our waitress half way through and had to ask several others who seemed to not fully understand what was being asked and didn't seem to have the same things written down in our order. Overall the staff and experience was not good and I would not recommend anyone close to me come here. Now for the food. I am not even sure where to start here. I was excited when looking at the menu...I love italian and everything online looked good but then we actually got there and tasted it. I am not sure if a something labeled "Brie Wheel" should be a wheel but it was only a quarter of a wheel. Our "Large" cheese plate was so small I can't imagine what the small is. We got this cheese plate because they ran out of brie and it took them 30 minutes just to let us know. We all ordered pasta and half of it came out 10 minutes before the rest of the food. What came out first was cold and almost inedible due to the temp. They placed meals without crab at the wrong seat and if someone ate it they could've gotten very sick. We asked for the cold temp to be fixed but it seemed the solution was just microwaving it. What came second was the same pasta dish "Capellini" as the first "round" but came in several different pasta shapes. The french onion soup tasted like the Atlantic and the whole table tasted it and coughed due to the taste. The char salad seemed as though it was set on fire and not in a cute way. It was also supposed to have chicken and there was not a piece in site. The steak which was supposed to be a nice 8oz sirloin steak cooked medium came out looking like a salisbury steak from a microwaved meal that was cooked WELLLLL done. Fries were okay. Management gave us a free dessert but sadly this could not make up for what happened. Overall we went in with excitement. It was our friend birthday and we were so excited to celebrate her but it became a bad night when it took us 2 hours to "enjoy" a bad meal. Due to what else I see on this yelp page I think management really needs to sit down with their staff and reconsider how their restaurant is being run. I could see this place doing great things but not at this rate I can't see it staying open for much longer due to how embarrassing it was. The solution to these problems should not be comped meals. When bike PGH had their open streets event R winery was handing out free sangria slushies so I stopped to try one. They are really good. I also enjoy their dessert wine the ambrosia. Walking around the Strip district of Pittsburgh, we encountered this nice place located in the basement. We were a bit suspicious of the emptiness of the restraunt, but decided to dine there. We ordered the steak and capellini. The steak was tender and flavorful, while the meat was definitely quality. The capellini was a pasta dish made with their wine and was delicious. We had 11 people and they still split the checks as many ways as we wanted, basically unheard of. Best part of both dinner and brunch here are the prices and the heavy pours of both the wine and the mimosas. Unfortunately, the food was just OK. I was very surprised that this place is not handicapped accessible! We had my 96 year old mother who could not get up or down all of the many steps. The food was mediocre, took a while to get to us. and we were seated outside on picnic benches. The server was very nice and was apologetic because it was her first day. The restaurant space is downstairs and has a really cool vibe. Beware, you will likely not have cell service. The service was great and staff was friendly. Everything came very quick. Located in the strip district on the corner of Penn and 21st, the quaint environment hits you immediately as you walk down the stairs in the wine cellar atmosphere of the restaurant. We started with each getting a wine flight and a charcuterie board. There were a couple wines that were ok, but generally speaking, the wines weren't great. My intention was to figure out which wine we like best and buy a few bottles for home. After trying them, we decided to pass on this plan. The charcuterie board was great with a nice variety of cheese, meats, fruit, and crackers. For the main dish, my wife ordered the shrimp and crab cakes while I had the chicken parm. My wife enjoyed the shrimp and crab cakes (we just moved here from the DC/Baltimore area, so it's tough to review these crab cakes without being too unfair to CoP). The chicken parm was a bit burnt and the sauce pretty flavorless. Like I mentioned at the start, this place was probably 3-stars on the food and 2-stars on the wine, but the ambience made up for it, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars. read more

We chose the white Sangria which was small and contained only a tiny but of fruit mash. For our required food item we chose "bruschetta". Turned out to be untoasted pieces of bread with mozzarella and halved cherry tomatoes drowned in Italian salad dressing. We learned only 3 staff members were working. They were wonderful.
