We would not order the mushroom soup again because of all of the additional vegetables that were added, too much texture. We loved most of the food, but our service was below mediocre and beyond substandard for downtown Pittsburgh. Our total for 2 for lunch was $130. We paid $60 pp at Magic Kingdom for a buffet at Crystal Palace and we paid $120 for chicken tenders a hotdog and 2 fries poolside in Turks and Caicos and had better service... Stopped in for dinner after a pirates game let out. It was very busy, but the service was great. The atmosphere was nice, they had the doors and windows open so it was and breezy. The floors are a little slick but once you get your food on a hot stone. You'll know why. The food was pretty fantastic. They serve the steak blue on a hot stone and you cut pieces and cook it yourself. Very very cool concept. The butters and chimichurri are fantastic BUT! Be careful if it gets on the stone it pops like bacon grease. It was worth it. I had the seafood and it was great. The scallops were great and had nice texture. The food was seasoned OK the only thing we would've liked is a little more on the steak. We each got a drink and on the stone meals. It came out to a little over $100 so it won't break the bank. I've been to Mike Spear bar numerous times and seeing the food come out on stones to Cooke and always thought what a great concept. Can't wait to have a reason to try it well bring on my dad's birthday and restaurant week and it was the perfect melding of reasons to go. Our waiter Nick was fantastic. I recognized him from prior establishments he worked at and he's always been nothing but friendly and attentive. My dad has never done a restaurant week so he asked which of the two entrées he was looking at would be recommended and the waiter was very nice about giving us his recommendations. I love French onion soup so I decided to try it that is probably the one thing that I wish I would've done differently in the meal however it was not bad. I just love crockpot, thicker, browned cheese soup. My dad got the French dip eggroll, which he thought was amazing, followed by the seafood sampler which he said was seasoned to perfection. I got the 6 ounce away because I love a good steak and this one was seasoned to perfection. I didn't add sauce. I didn't add salt. I didn't add pepper there was nothing that I would've changed about how this steak was cooked and I'm the one that cooked it on the stone. We both ordered the crème brûlée, which was amazing, especially since I had tried to have crème brûlée earlier in the week and didn't get it, although I do wish the berry selection on top was more than just blueberries because I think raspberries and strawberries. Add a certain tartness to the crème brûlée filling. All of that to say, I would highly recommend North Shore Tavern for any dinner reason not just special occasions and it's definitely a go to stop on restaurant week from here on out. The restaurant was bright, moderate to noisier and was generally more of a sports bar look which I didn't mind so that's the kind of atmosphere you kind of had being there. The Tavern was across the street from our hotel and from PNC Park. We went twice while we were in town for a baseball game. We got in late on Friday night and the kitchen was open until 11 so we ordered the Bison Burger with fries. It was a solid burger and really liked it and the fries were really good! For the second visit after the game we stopped in and got the Pulled Pork Nachos the share. The cheese was fairly thin so it pooled at the bottom but not hard to dip into it. The pulled pork meat was beyond tasty and all mixed on a chip was a solid win! They were out of the banana foster pie the first night but got it back in the second night. I had really high hopes for it but was just average to me but you may love it. Was hoping for more banana and rich sauce but was more of just a banana cream pie but different. I had a great experience at North Shore. I came in on a Sunday night, and there were a few seating options available without having to wait. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, and served me shortly after arriving. I ordered the Maple Bacon Chicken wrap, and it was incredible. This place was off the chain busy at 10pm at night.... Still had a 20-30 min wait. At first, I thought OMG that's ridiculous! About 45 mins later -- I changed my tune! I'm a picky eater and don't eat a lot of red meat. However, I didn't see much else on the menu that piqued my interest. The 'draw' off this restaurant was that your steak is brought to you with a hot stone. It is lightly seared by the chef before it's brought to the table and you finish cooking it to your liking on the stone that 700*. I am NO cook and that steak was one of the best I've ever had!!! The staff was very personable. Bar was super busy! All tables occupied! Bathrooms were clean! (Yes, that's important!) Lots of menu options (for the less picky patron, lol) Steak was well worth the wait. If we ever return to Pittsburgh.... We will make sure to visit again!!! read more

Looking at other reviews, I seem to be in the minority with my rating, but I have my reasons. The service on this visit was improved over a previous visit, but was average at best and I sensed a serious lack of wait staff training. Those in our party who ordered the meatloaf really enjoyed it, and the portions were generous. Per my dinner mates, the pizza and the burger were just okay. I had the salmon - again generous portions for the sides. Unfortunately, the risotto was seriously undercooked and the salmon was overcooked and a bit dry. For the prices, and the ambition of the menu, I expect higher standards. All that said, I knocked a star off my rating after going downstairs to use the restroom. The door to a storeroom was open and I could see the front of a freezer with a build up of black mildew (or mold?) on it. Then I noted a serious build-up of dust in the restroom. Makes me concerned about the cleaning standards for the rest of the establishment. read more
