My first trip to Pittsburgh meant a lot of firsts, including my first meal in the city. After a 3:30 AM wake-up call and a flight into Pittsburgh, my 18-year-old travel companion Jackson and I were more than ready for lunch. Normally I travel with his dad so this trip was a little different. Jackson has heard plenty of stories about all the places his father and I have eaten over the years, so this time I handed him the responsibility of picking our first restaurant. Working downtown, we needed something close by and landed at RedBeard's Sports Bar & Grill. The short walk through downtown Pittsburgh was interesting, but the weather was another story. Hot, humid, and muggy. By the time we arrived, the restaurant was busy and only outdoor seating was available. We took a table outside but asked if we could move indoors when something opened up. Our server, Lauren, was fantastic from start to finish. Friendly, attentive, and she made sure we were well taken care of. I let Jackson choose the appetizer and he knocked it out of the park with the mozzarella sticks. Crispy on the outside, loaded with gooey melted cheese on the inside, and paired with a very good marinara sauce. Definitely a strong start to the meal. Jackson and I quickly came to the same conclusion: air conditioning exists for a reason. Patio dining has its place, but a hot and humid Pittsburgh afternoon isn't it. Thankfully, we were able to move inside once a table became available. For my meal, I ordered the Reuben, one of my go-to sandwiches whenever I see it on a menu. RedBeard's version didn't disappoint. Plenty of corned beef, good flavor throughout, and everything worked well together. I requested my fries well-done with no seasoning, and they came out exactly the way I like them. Jackson went with the Inside-Out Grilled Cheese and was thrilled with his choice. Judging by how quickly it disappeared, I'd say it was a winner. I don't know when I'll find myself back in Pittsburgh, but I enjoyed both the restaurant and the downtown atmosphere. Good food, excellent service from Lauren, and a solid first dining experience in the city. 4 stars from me. I'd happily stop back in the next time work brings me to Pittsburgh. read more

This is my second time here and it will be my last. I brought my 2 sons here for dinner. I ordered a Caesar salad with salmon. One of my sons got a fried chicken sandwich with bacon (chewy and undercooked) and my other son got a burger, which he ordered medium. I received my salad w/salmon 20 minutes before my sons received their food. We came together and we will eat together. So my food (the salmon) got cold while waiting on their food. My son's burger came well done with a charred outside. My other son's chicken sandwich had a thickness similar to my cell phone (he said I'm being generous with that comparison) and it was so over cooked and dry that he struggled to snap off a bite. The chicken was stringy. Definitely a frozen chicken patty that spent two lifetimes in an oil bath. When I finally took a bite of my salad it barely had any dressing on it. So I waited for the waitress to come back (probably about 5 min before she did) and asked for a side of dressing. That took another 4-5 minutes to get. I did tell her about the gross chicken sandwich and told her not to bother making another one, as my son said he didn't want to wait on them to cook another one. The manager came by and apologized and took off our sodas from the check. I appreciated that. When I got my bill, I noticed I was charged $2 for dressing. The waitress never told me there was a charge for it. That really made me mad because if she had said something I would have shown her that my salad was mostly undressed when I received it. Nevertheless, I can't recommend this place. There are so many better restaurants to choose from and I suggest you do. read more

Walking down the streets of downtown Pittsburg, and we were hungry and wanted a grab a bite to eat. When we came in , the host was very attentive and were seated immediately, the waitress we had had some of the best customer services we've ever had , that being said you go to a restaurant to eat and as tasty as the food was it was just above average , it did not wow me at all. Okay. Hate to do it, as I've been here multiple times over the years, and go back because I really liked it back then. Been here twice now in the last couple weeks - live out of state, so don't get here a lot. Buffalo hot wings should be maybe 90% hot sauce and a little butter. Last two times here it's basically reversed. Buttered wings. No heat. No tang. Mostly butter. Used to love the wings here, now won't eat them. Decent beer menu, but whoever orders IPAs needs to understand that not all IPAs are hazy. In fact, hazy IPAs are probably the worst tasting of all IPAs. Not hoppy. Doesn't even taste like beer. Please add a clean hoppy IPA to the menu. read more

we were looking for a spot to grab some food before the Nas: Illmatic w/ Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra show. looked at both Red Beard and Olive And Twist menus and decided on the bearded one. two level seating and we got escorted to the second deck. server was very friendly and warm. i looked at the menu and immediately noticed the sirloin steak. server said highly recommended and can also get the steak on a salad or in wrap. i did the entree and it came with a baked potato and grilled veggies. when my plate came to the table my eyes bulged out like Jim Carrey in the MASK. beautiful presentation and the largest baked potato i have ever seen. everything was hot, cooked perfectly, and DELICIOUS. restaurant and bathroom were clean. i will definitely be going back ! read more

Before the Pirates/Padres game... not a bad spot. After the Pirates/Padres game... still not a bad spot, but the crowd was a bit more frisky. Frisky meaning that the locals were a bit more vocal at the upstairs bar when f#cking with us out of town fan. We took it in all good fun and the staff here was very playful and eager to serve us shots to make sure we all remained jovial and overall good sports to each other. The bar itself is very nice and all I am able to speak to is the upstairs bar as we didn't explore downstairs at all. I actually think it's a great move to have the bar upstairs since it does have the possibility to get a bit more rowdy, which could be something that brings more people in or keeps people out if it's visible. I think they've made the smart move by putting the fun little bar upstairs and it's a place I'll likely return to next time in Pittsburgh. read more

Such a nice sports bar that we stopped here twice on our three-night stay in Pittsburgh. Last Friday night we came in early to catch both the NLCS and ALCS games as both New York Baseball teams were playing. Happy Hour draft Yeungling pints were only $3 (afterwards they were $5.61). Not too shabby. Foodwise, we had pierogies, wings, a Turkey Club and a Reuban. All were aces. Service was good. My pint glass was never empty for long. Price was good too. 13 pints and all that food was $139 with tax (tip is additional). Definitely will return when back in the Burgh. read more

As other reviews mentioned, the staff here is exceptional and it is a fun spot, even busy when there was no sporting event. The Lenten menu offered a nice linguini with clam sauce. The regular menu generally seemed to be typical sports bar food. My wife had the inside out grilled cheese and fries, which looked unappetizing and she wound up getting ill from it. It was our waitress's first night, but she was so pleasant and helpful as was the greeter. The good outweighed the bad. I think 3 1/2 stars is about right. read more

Stopped at Red Beard's prior to a concert at the stadium. It was a SUPER busy weekend with the Pride festival, two art festivals, and two concerts happening all within the same proximity. A waitress outside told us that there was a 45 minute wait to be served. We decided to go inside and take a look at the menu. We got EXTREMELY lucky as two chairs had just been vacated at the bar. No wait for us!!! We sat at the bar and our server (F Reynaldo) immediately took our drink order. She was the best server we had the entire time in Pittsburgh. She was very attentive to all of the patrons at the bar! She even helped us with suggestions of other places to eat during the remainder of our trip. It truly felt like southern hospitality, except in the north! We both ordered simple hamburgers which both came out just as ordered and pretty quickly, given a 45 minute wait! After speaking with barstaff, they elaborated that he has fired multiple employees as retaliatory method to questioning his unyielding authority, or when others have suggested better ways to run his shifts. Stopped after the Savannah Bananas game this past Saturday, with a group of 13. Issue #1 They sat us down at tables pushed together to accommodate 10, and then when we try to pull another table over, the guy working the door came over and yelled at us and that they needed that table. Tried to explain he didn't want hear it. And then when the other three people showed up he came over and move the table. Problem #2 They brought the bill and it was higher than expected ($309), but we paid the bill and left. Then when talking about it on the way home looked at the bill and realized that they added 20% gratuity, but didn't point that out (I know, we should have looked closer). They have every right to add the 20%, but should absolutely point it out! Food and service was decent - but the other parts certainly left a bad impression! read more

This place is great! I love it's location and convenience to the theater district. They are very accommodating with reservation and last minute seating. They have THE BEST CHEESE LOGS in the universe. I really mean that! They are like no other! Their burgers, salads, and specials are all very good. They are big enough to accommodate a lot of theater goers quickly, groups, etc. The wait staff are all very nice and helpful and often very funny! I rarely write restaurant reviews, but I feel strongly enough about this experience that I felt compelled to share it. My husband and I are from New York, but as Pittsburgh fans, we traveled to the city to watch some Penguins hockey. We chose this establishment because it appeared to offer good food, drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere--but unfortunately, that was not the case. After ordering a round of drinks and an order of wings, we settled in to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins game. However, midway through the first period, we realized the audio playing throughout the bar was for a Texas football game--not the hometown hockey game. Considering that most of the patrons were wearing Pittsburgh gear, I assumed it would be reasonable to request that the sound be switched to the Penguins game. When I asked the bartender, she kindly explained that she would need to check with the manager. I decided to speak to him directly and politely asked if the volume could be changed to the Penguins game. I was told that the bar was "advertising as a football bar for Thanksgiving weekend," and therefore my request would not be accommodated. Another guest even called out in support of playing the Penguins audio, but we were completely ignored. I asked a second time, noting that the majority of customers appeared to be watching the hockey game, and that--being in Pittsburgh--it seemed appropriate to play the hometown team's audio. The manager responded in an unexpectedly disrespectful manner, unlike anything I've experienced at any bar or restaurant. I do want to acknowledge the two blonde female bartenders, who were wonderful and sincerely apologetic. Despite their kindness, we chose to cancel our second food order and head to another bar--one that was more than willing to play the sound for a Pittsburgh game in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we will not be returning and advise any Pittsburgh fan to do the same. Major thumbs down for the manager. read more

I've been coming to Red Beard's since I moved to PGH a couple of years ago. Come for the food and stay for the views on the patio! They also have a second floor which is available to rent out for private parties. Their menu is your typical bar food with wings, burgers and beer but also some other unique bar food like a tasty BBQ chicken dip (soooo amazing!). The staff is really friendly, and we always have a good time here. The bar usually shows a variety of games on a handful of TVs inside and outside. read more

I always find Redbeard's to be surprising. They aren't normally that busy, and the bar itself doesn't have much character, in fact I would call their character "television." That said, they have a great staff and their food is consistently good. Their wings and burgers are equally solid but please don't come here and not order their fried mozzarella logs. Drinks came out fast and food did not take long either. We ordered: Perogies: App comes with 4 and they were hot, crispy on the outside with soft warm potatoes on the inside. Get it with a side of sour cream. Fish Sandwich: (pictured) this sandwich was huge!! The picture only shows half a sandwich as I forgot to take a picture before sharing half with my kid. The fish was crispy and flaky. Did not feel greasy at all! Hot Nashville Chicken: (pictured) huge piece of friend chicken with a peppery spice. Served open faced on a thick slice of toast. Burger: Nicely cooked, even with it being done Med-well, the burger was thick and juicy. Wings: lots of flavors to choose from... Bummed they didn't have the Honey Habenero. Garlic Parm and Redbeards sauces were good! Overall a solid 4 star restaurant for bar and American fare (and one with probably the cleanest bathroom I've ever seen in a sports bar!) read more

A perfectly divey dive bar in downtown. If you come during the day, it's a place to beat the heat and get some air-conditioned lunch and beers in the afternoon. If you come at night, it becomes a dingy nightlife bar. Especially if it's after a Pitt game. I went in there and was sufficiently served with the amount of beers that I required. I also took a six pack to go to my hotel. Since I am traveling I was unaware of how to grab beers to bring back to my hotel, but most of the bars will give you a six pack. There is definitely no frills and no fuss about this place. It is what it is for a bar in this area. If you are staying at the Renaissance which is across the street, this would be my go to late night drinks bar. read more

I had the soup of the day to start, which was a potato soup. Possibly one of the best potato soups I've ever had in my life!
