I had wanted to visit this place for quite some time. I came in and it was busy. They do have food but I was just getting a beer. Their beer menu is massive. They have a ton on tap and they have a ton in cans/bottles. I asked the bartender about IPAs and told him I like both hazy and west coast IPAs. The guy came back with a pint and placed it in front of me. A PERFECT BEER! It was delicious. I am glad I track my beers because I would get this same beer again. I will say though, in the last few years stuff (except the staff) has gone completely downhill. Wing night was terrible. I ordered boneless smokin parm. This used to be saucy with parm in sauce. Now it's this dry disgusting chunks. It's like as if they as made these and put them in that sauce and froze them. The grub is good, and one of their various discounted boneless and bone-in wings or flatbreads is key. Smokin' Joe's feels distinctly Pittsburgh. Friendly faces and good greasy food alike. I went to Smokin' Joe's on a Monday a little before the end of happy hour. My friend and I wanted beer and discounted food, which is what we got. It was Monday, so we went with boneless wings and flatbreads. Paired with a beer, for each person this about $10. We were surprised about how empty the bar was when we first arrived. This wasn't the case for very long, as a bunch of parties started to show up around 8PM. The atmosphere at this place is great and people are kind. Definitely worth a trip! read more

Been to Smokin' Joe's twice now and was very impressed both times. Their burgers and fries are very good. Everything tastes fresh, well seasoned, the fries are amazing especially with their house ranch dressing and the burgers are juicy and very flavorful. Their buffalo chicken sandwich was also quite good as well and the portions are quite large and inexpensive. Great place to grab something to eat on the south side. Staff is friendly and service was pretty quick even when they were quite busy on a Friday night. Looking forward to visiting again sometime soon. read more

I came here with a big group of about 20ish poeple for happy hour. We gave them a heads up beforehand but when we got there they looked severely understaffed (with only one bartender and one server). The girl took our orders pretty quickly and was very nice so it wasnt an issue. The food took a while to come out (granted we did order A LOT so this was expected). They were generally pretty good about keeping track of who ordered what but did not manange to bring out my friends food in time with everyone elses. He had to ask two times where his order was while everyone else was eating and it finally came out around an hour later. While I understand the stress of serving a big group, I feel like the restaurant should have been better equipped with handling big crowds. The food itself was hit or miss. The wings, provolone sticks, and tacos are very tasty. The burgersm on the other hand, are a bit dry and tasteless. They also have a very extensive selection of brews that I have to come back to try. The Good. Awesome beer selection. On tap and in bottles. A great bartender. Sweet, attentive and not afraid to tell you if a beer sucks. A mean Bloody Mary. Thick and spicy. The rib wrap. Seriously, it's just ribs in a wrap. Can't be bad. The wings are fat and juicy, and the spicy BBQ is a winner. Smokin' Joe's is a perfect place to catch a game. Good food, good beer, and good people. The Bad. They don't toss the wings in the sauce...just dump it on top. Same goes for the "rubs." The burger was huge, but overcooked and dry. Good flavors on the Reuburger though. The Ugly. I'm lucky that I get to travel for a living and I use my Yelp App to seek out great beer spots. In the last year I have over 150 hotel nights in fourteen states. So I've had a chance to visit a tremendous number of great beer joints! My Holy Grail is the big three- A great beer selection, amazing gastro-pub food, and a bartender that looks like a Victoria's Secret model! I haven't found this mystical place yet but I'll keep trying. Smokin' Joe's is one for three but it's the most important one and that's a great beer selection. What can I say; the tap list and the bottle list are both exceptional. The organization of the beer list itself is very good. Many less traveled folks would probably say five stars but I'm going for 4. The lists at the 5 star places include IBUs and a more extensive description of each beer. BTW, the beer prices are very competitive here. As others have said, the food is hit and miss here. For me it was a miss. Actually I'm not even going to discuss it. I'm going to think of these folks as a four star beer place without a menu. If you are a beer aficionado and in the Pittsburgh area, a visit here is a must. Smokin Joe's is a low key bar that's seats on the corner in the Southside of Pittsburgh. I've been coming here for years specially for their food. Their fresh cut french fries is my absolute favorite thing to eat there. I also order their chicken wings they have a nice variety of flavors to choose from. The service is also good, we went after the happy hour rush but this time the bartender was a rude older woman with glasses. We sat at the bar like we usually do, and there wasn't a seat for my partner to seat down in and we ask her if there was any extra chairs and she informed us that she was too busy to go seek an extra chair and asked us what we wanted, we felt she was rushing us to order. We ordered our food through her but her attitude was an instant turn off. Once we saw some other seats available at the bar we move to another section of the bar. We were served by an older gentleman who was polite and patient. After she left the bar, the vibe change and a younger female had taken over her section and had a great attitude. read more

From a mainly strictly drinking perspective- this place is awesome. TONS of craft beers on tap and they have tons of bottles as well - to drink there or to take home. The staff is really awesome and friendly and has been happy to help me decide what beer to try each time I have gone. There are so many beers and can be a little overwhelming when you first walk in, so don't hesitate to ask their opinion! I have yet to eat anything here besides the fried pickles. They are pickle chips and are honestly not my favorite, but they aren't bad. You get a lot of them and if you come during happy hour they're half off! Smokin joes is overall an awesome place to kick back, watch a game or go to happy hour and drink some awesome beers! Smokin' Joe's is so quintessentially PGH that its almost adorable. Almost. If you're a craft beer fan without an ounce of pretentiousness, this unassuming joint is an absolute beer oasis. I'm talking HUNDREDS of beers. On. Tap. Yessssss. When we lived on the "sathsihde", we made it a habit to saunter up and down E. Carson Street to people watch, bar hop, or grab a bite. To this day, E. Carson is the best street I've ever lived on and I miss it immensely. We frequented Smokin' Joe's than I'd like to admit. The food at Smoking' Joe's was pretty straight forward - sandwiches, wings, fries, so unless they've changed their menu around, I wasn't ever truly wow'd. But, that's not what makes SJ's such a lovable spot. Its the beer, beer selection and the staff. There's also games in the back of the house, but admittedly, the only time I wandered back there was to visit the grungy ladies room. Definitely, an older crowd at this bar; I'd say the median age was around 40 on the night I went. Though, the crowd was agreeable (that is, no one was overly friendly or unwarrantedly rude). They have pool and darts in the back of the bar for those looking to play some games while drinking. There are also televisions everywhere, so there is no shortage of activities. Friends and I come by this place whenever there's a sports game going on . It's a great place to hang out (so long as it's not too crowded). Food is great! Wings tend to be fairly popular among our group. The pretzels are also super delicious! You just need to be okay with the idea of gaining a few pounds because this thing is drenched in warm, rich butter and comes with a savory and equally rich beer cheese dip. The blue ox burger I ordered came with an impressively well-made beef pattie. Medium rare was definitely a solid medium rare, came with some crispy and tasty bacon, BBQ pork, and topped off with friend onions. If only I could dislocate my lower jaw to get everything in one bite (rather than looking like I'm mashing my face into a pile of meat sandwiched between two buns - which could use some toasting). Fries come with skin, which I love, but were disappointingly soggy. That didn't stop me from inhaling them. Overall, food was solid, impressively great, for a divey bar. This is my favorite place in Pittsburgh besides PNC Park. Excellent beer selection, both tap and bottle. Really cool people working the bar, even if they do get really slammed, because the place gets busy whether there's a sporting event going on in town or not. The food is hefty and delicious. I had the pizza fries. The people next to me had the nacho fries and wings, and I wish I had gone that route instead, but only because they looked amazing. I would try everything I could to make a trip here every time I come to the Burgh. Note: I forgot to pay when I was there last weekend. I realized it the next morning and came in to settle up. Really great beer bar! There is a good selection of tap beers as well as a large cooler area behind the bar with a ton of different beers. We stopped in here after dinner, so while they have food and it looked pretty good, we just had drinks. We were there on trivia night and the rear table area of the bar was packed, but we easily found a couple of seats at the bar. The bartenders were nice and attentive. I grabbed one of the beers from the tap list to start. It was ok, but while drinking that one I was able to really give the cooler a look and found something I wanted. The price was also very good. I went to Smokin' Joe's for the first time last Saturday and for the second time last Friday night. I am very impressed with their craft beer selection and on both nights the bar staff were attentive. I ordered the blue cheese and bacon burger and I am impressed with it. I used to live in New Orleans but I will tell you Smokin' Joes goes toe to toe with the best New Orleans bars. On the second night they even gave me garlic butter with my fries! Smokin' Joe's has become a regular stop for me in the past two years, mostly because I'm there once a week for trivia. I like going here for several reasons: First, they have an extensive and relatively cheap beer list. 60 on tap and over 300 in bottles. Second, They are open 11 am - 2 am every day of the week. Since my "weekend" is Monday-Tuesday, I appreciate somewhere I can go to unwind on a Sunday night. Third, they have some of the best wings in the city. if you go on a Wednesday, they are 40 cents each (25 for boneless). Lastly, it's the perfect South Side "Goldilocks" bar. It's not expensive and pretentious, but it's not so shady that you think you will get knifed if you insist on ordering something classier than Miller Light. A few weaknesses to note. The bartenders are amazing, but some of their servers are painfully slow. Also, the food menu is really hit or miss. The wings, spinach dip, and french onion soup are all fantastic. Their burgers and sandwiches are somewhat lacking. Overall, however, Smokin' Jones is one of my favorite bars in the South Side. read more

It's a great neighborhood bar with an impressive beer selection (both on tap and in bottles). With over 50 taps, they do offer beer flights and growlers. Most times when I think I'll just stop in for a beer I will also end up ordering food because it just smells so good. Be sure to check daily food and drink specials. I used to work in the South Side and would often hit up Smokin' Joe's for their lunch specials. It's mostly your average bar food but I was never disappointed. It's a chill place for a quick bite or a long night of drinking. If you're looking for velvet ropes, don't go here. Smokin' Joe's has been around for awhile, it's not one of those pretentious places that will be gone in two months. When I lived in the South Side, the charismatic bartenders at Smokin' Joe's kept me coming back. The vast beer selection and tasty food didn't hurt, either.
