It's not like I was looking for a greasy spoon, but the weather was so frosty and my energy level diminished by a long day of driving in the Laurel Highlands, that this became a convenient dining stop close to my hotel. It was a typical retro-vintage stop inside, and I was forewarned by the veteran waitress they were open only for the next half-hour. I reassured her I was not planning to stay long. It must've been the end of a long shift for her because she was grumbling to the busboy about the other waitress who decided to leave early. This other woman, clearly the 'Kiss Mah Grits' type, alienated me by calling me Mr. Miyagi and cackling about it to the rest of the staff. I thought I might be expected to recite lines from "The Karate Kid". Instead I ordered the $11.25 Grilled Meatloaf Melt, which came with quite a slice covered in fried onions and melted Swiss cheese barely held together by the toasted rye bread. It was on the greasy side, and the fries were dried out (Photo 10). What would Mr. Miyagi say? It's a worn-in, seasoned spot that for the most part feels extraordinarily not modernized - cash only, jukeboxes in the booths, decor from the 50s/60s. Food is solid for the cost. Could see this being a good reliable spot in a pinch. Got the gyro w/ chicken. Surprised at quality relatively. Good fries. Great coleslaw. For the cost, it was great. In general, not amazing. Received horrible service today. My waitress was very short and rude.*THEY AREN'T EVEN BUSY* Found hair in my food and she was like yeah there and looked at me like I was suppose to fix it. I had asked for new knife. She came around to give me a new knife bcz she took my other knife she took the food with the hair. When I requested the manager and hung over the wall to discuss the issues with me and as im explaining what happend he began to cut me off and informed me that he take care of the check and tried to walk away. Staple spot in the area serving up great diner food since the 1950's. One of my favorite places to rest and recuperate after long nights in Shadyside (and beyond). This spot still has the old school charm that excites me knowing it's survived the rest of time. I truly needed this meal and it was a Pittsburgh sized helping that got the job done. I am a cancer patient receiving treatment at UPMC Hillman nearby and a regular customer here. I always tip 20% or more. However, during my latest visit, a server (middle-aged black-haired woman) kept me waiting for a long time. When I finally paid, she rudely and publicly blamed me about not tipping before--only to later realize she had mistaken me for someone else. She did apologize, but the experience was deeply upsetting and humiliating. First, she has served me several times, and I've always left a generous tip--it's just my habit--yet she doesn't even recognize me (or even worse-- racist?). Second, she shouldn't be publicly calling out any customer like that; it's a matter of basic courtesy. I was honestly shocked and deeply hurted. It used to be one of my favorite diners-- not anymore. I received the rudest accuse ever. Please do not make assumptions or direct negativity toward customers without knowing the facts. Please try to be kind. The food was fine, surprisingly good for a diner. The interior is charming, my mom was impressed by all the vintage touches they've maintained over the years. There were a few parking spots in a small lot which is very appreciated in an area where parking can often be a struggle. They are a cash only business but do have an atm in the lobby. So if those things sound like a win to you and you don't mind absolutely bonkers bad service I'd say give this place a go. I don't go out of my way to leave a bad review but after simmering about this for over a month and my ten year old *still* experiencing anxiety about it I figured I might all well write about it. If nothing, it makes for a funny story. There was something seriously off about our server. I immediately thought she might be ill when she came over to our table but I don't know maybe there was something else making her act so bizarre. The service was awkward and sometimes hostile, it was three adults and four kids which I get can be a lot for a server but it wasn't busy in there at all. As soon as we got our menus she's exasperated because we don't immediately know what the kids want. She hovered the whole time and would interrupt every minute to ask if we were ready. "Are you going to be ordering anything?! Do you want food or not!?" Like damn, we will order please let us tell the small children what their options are so they can pick. My nephew ordered an adult meal and she shamed him for it, said if that's how much spaghetti he always eats then no wonder he's so big. My son ordered a lemonade and she literally told him no. We laughed it off a little and said he'll take the lemonade, to which she replies "no! It has way too much sugar it'll rot your teeth out of your mouth". It's been over a month and he's still anxious about how much sugar is in stuff and asks in a panic if his teeth will fall out if he eats a any kind of sweet food. She didn't bring him a lemonade and instead gave him chocolate milk. She kept throwing dirty dishes into the bin closest to us that whatever liquid waste had been sitting in it would splash up and hit the two kids sitting closest to it. She was throwing these dishes so hard I'm very surprised glasses weren't shattering. She and dumped half of a sprite she had just filled, mostly on the floor but also on a customer sitting at the counter. She never acknowledged the puddle and proceeded to hand me the half full glass now covered in soda. I didn't bother asking for a new one. We was one check brought to the table and there was no way I was going to ask for it to be split so we had to take a minute to figure out who was going to be sending what amount to what person so we could pull money out. There was an exceptional amount of huffing and puffing because we didn't instantly pull the money out of thin air. I panic tipped $20 on a $97 bill because she said it was her birthday. Home girl if you're reading this, please get a job you don't hate. There's no way they're paying you enough to be worth being that bent out of shape. And stop telling kids that lemonade is going to make their teeth rot. read more

The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I ordered a feta omelet with onions, mushrooms and spinach with a side of bacon. My friend ordered oatmeal and a side of eggs. Our waitress, Tina was super friendly and the food was delivered quickly. The ambiance is rather sweet meaning there are a lot of repeat customers and you can feel the warmth :) There is free parking in their lot behind the diner. I will be coming back! Ritter's is one of those classic Pittsburgh diners that just remind you of home and comfort. I hadn't been in years, so we decided to stop in for breakfast a few weekends ago. They have a parking lot across the street which makes it easy to park, especially in Shadyside. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and my husband ordered the corn beef hash breakfast. His came with eggs and toast. Our waitress was great and attentive. Our food came out quickly and everything tasted good. Our total bill was approx $17, so prices are great here! I used to come here all the time when I was much younger ... it was always a popular place for a friendly, filling, good meal. Today Ritters was packed and we were fortunate to get the last two seats at the counter. Never sat at the counter before and it was an interesting experience watching scores of steaming hot, delicious plates coming out of the kitchen. We both got western omelets -- they're advertised as two eggs but they must be gigantic ones -- and a small mountain of home fries. I also got my favorite: buckwheat pancakes. Mmmm ... everything was hot and delicious. I really enjoyed the coffee, too, as it was hot, and strong and flavorful but not at all bitter. Yum !! read more

Spectacular. I'm visiting the area for work. Everyone at the local office wanted some chain dump for dinner. I knew Pittsburgh would have a little diner somewhere. Thanks to Yelp, I found Ritter's. You can't beat a local diner with inexpensive food that taste good. This visit I had pumpkin pancakes, eggs and home fries. The pancakes were huge so I opted to take those to go. They ended up tasting great. The eggs were good as were the home fries. My server was great I forgot her name but she was helpful with her suggestions and came to the table multiple times to check on us. I'm all about a good diner so I was looking forward to trying this place. Upon arriving it was nice to see that they had a separate parking lot just for the diner. Not having to fight for parking is always a plus! Also warning they only accept cash here, but do have an ATM available to use. We were greeted and seated right away and given menus to place our orders. The booths have old school jukeboxes that seem to still be functional, but maybe not in use due to Covid? The diner is very old school I believe it's been around since the 50's. The decor gives you a Greek feel. The waitress that we had was friendly and even cracked a couple of jokes with us and another table with two older gentleman who were talking about running out on their bill. I ordered an apple juice to drink and it had an unidentified object floating in it. That made my stomach squirm so I ordered waters for the table. My water was good but my best friends water also had something lurking in between the ice cubes. So yeah, I recommend checking your drinks. Moving on I ordered the 2 eggs with potatoes and bacon with toast. The eggs, bacon and potatoes were delicious, but that toast was literally black in places. Had a friendly and attentive waitress and decided to get their meat loaf sandwich special of the day. It comes with your choice of potato and is smothered in brown gravy. Got the food fairly quickly. The food was average-Meatloaf was good but not overly thick. Got mashed potatoes to go with them. They were ok as well. The diner wasn't overly busy and you pay at your table instead of at the register. Please note that Ritter's is currently cash only and they do have an ATM in the event you only have cards when you come. Prices are very reasonable. Tried the place for Sunday brunch with visiting family. It was very busy, but we got a table in the back room within 10-15 minutes. Our waitress was very nice, especially given how busy it was. Food was a little slow, but again understandable with the crowd. The menu is extensive, so we're looking forward to returning to try something new. We liked the unique, Greek inspired breakfast options, such as the gyro omelettes. The omelettes were all really good and large portions. Potatoes were average.
