Got really lucky and had this place recommended to my hubs and I the other night (by the amazing bartenders at the super cool Bottle Rocket Social Hall) - for the wonderful Allentown Night Market. They opened for the 1st time for the market. The place is on the main drag and a bit quirky inside - there appear to be far fewer tables than the place could hold with huge open floor space near the front. We grabbed a couple stools at the old fashioned counter. The servers are such a treat here! Kathy waited on us and kept us entertained the entire time! She felt like a friend by the time we left. Her niece is the manager - and equally fun. It's a family atmosphere. We decided to get a Rachel (me) & a Reuben (hubs). Mine was in Texas toast (no calories spared! ) with a good amount of deli turkey and a mild sauce. My husband declared the Reuben "good, though I wouldn't rush back to get another." (He's kind of a Reuben aficionado!). But the real star on both our plates was the *fresh* real French fries. Although I assume it was a customer. I used the bathroom before I ate and after I ate and they were there the whole time. I also think people are smoking in the bathrooms, again I'm assuming these are customers that don't have the highest respect for other people. I would definitely eat here again though. I discovered this spot during the pandemic & it quickly became my go to. I'd order to-go nearly daily and the staff even had my order memorized when they recognized my voice over the phone. It's a lost gem in Pittsburgh's breakfast scene and deserves so much more credit. The staff is so kind and attentive. Went here for breakfast with little sister. There were no seats left so we ordered take out. Was told it would take 15 minutes, we waited an hour. Also $3.00 if you order take out then decide to dine is is ridiculous. I understand if kitchen is backed up, I've worked in restaurants my entire life but at least tell us it'll be a little bit longer. No one said anything the entire time we waited. The food was good. We got the French toast roll ups, steak sandwich, peanut butter and chocolate chip pancakes, and breakfast burritos. The portion was generous and prices really reasonable. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The only thing is it took really long before we got our food. They're definitely understaffed. We went sat morning and it wasn't super crowded. There is also a greasy smell at the place. I would consider coming back if I lived closer. The food was good but it wasn't good enough to make the trek up the slopes. read more

Food was average for a breakfast diner, service was horrible from the server, a black haired rather tall lady. Had to ask six separate times for coffee, Sweet and Low, napkins and sour cream. Once she brought the check it took forever for her to process payment. Not returning ever. There are plenty diners in Pittsburgh. Most are great...Eggs R Us on Noblestown Rd is superior. My fiancé and I stopped at Breakfast at Shelly's Sunday morning around 10am. Much to our surprise, the place was empty! It quickly became clear that they do a lot of business through grubhub. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with hot sausage and home fries (my go to) and my fiancé ordered the standard #2 (2 eggs over easy, sausage, home fries, and toast). The sandwich came on a Dutch crunch bun which was delish. The sausage wasn't your standard patty or link, it was hand formed and grilled to perfection. Neither the fried egg nor the sausage was overly greasy which made the sandwich that much better. The home fries were cooked nicely with a seasoning blend that sets them apart from all the other diners. Overall, the only thing lacking was that diner "feel." We will likely return! read more

I had breakfast with Shelly's on my visit to Pittsburgh this time around. Am sure Pamela will be upset when she reads this, but you gotta do what makes you happy. This is a new business at a location that previously housed a dinner for decades. The interiors are unassuming and call out Steelers only, but the owner and servers are really very friendly. There are tables for large groups and comfy bar stools. I ordered spinach feta tomato omelette, they delivered exactly what it says, nothin more nothin less. The portion sizes are right and the food is not as greasy as the other more popular spots. The home fries are probably how I would make them at my home. Avoid this place. It's a greasy spoon.. and they do not know how to make an omelette--none of the vegetables were cooked, so it was eggs and a raw salad. The coffee was bad. No one in our party was happy with his/her dish, and not located in the best of neighborhoods. read more
