I have been to Café Moulin in Shadyside several times on previous trips to Pittsburgh. In truth, it's such a favorite of mine that I headed there straight from the airport on my most recent visit. The cool vibe restaurant is tucked away up a short flight of stairs on Filbert Street. It gives the place a cozy, hideaway feel with brick walls and murals. It's pretty popular, so you might have to wait a few minutes for a table, but it moves pretty quick. The menu focuses heavily on crepes and French toast, and they do both very well. I went for a savory crepe that was loaded with eggs and topped with a rich sauce and diced vegetables. It came with a side of fresh fruit which was a nice touch. We also ordered a sweet crepe to share. It was beautifully presented with chocolate drizzle, berry sauce, and a massive pile of whipped cream. The coffee is solid too. Verdict: This is a consistent and reliable brunch spot. It was the perfect way to kick off my trip. I will definitely be back next time I am in town. read more

I love cafe Moulin! It is my go to breakfast spot in Pittsburgh. This was my 3rd visit in about a year and half and the food did not disappoint. The crepes and side salad are awesome. But the star of the show for me is the Shakshouka. I have gotten it the last 2 times I went. You also have to try their Dirty Chai. My only critique is the hostess at the front. She appeared overwhelmed by her role and was not warm. We were actually told by the waiters that "she is serious about her list". Which would be great if she managed it effectively. When I brought concerns that we had been pushed down the list 3 times for other parties. She responded "well, how do you know that" to which I responded "we watched you take their names down after ours and sit them before us". Her response was to shoo me off and tell me to go find a table myself; to which I did. But what a poor way to manage your stress, responsibility, and consumers. Cafe Moulin is without a doubt my absolute breakfast/brunch/lunch place in the area. The food is excellent (their avocado toast w/ eggs is so good I practically lick the plate when I'm done) and the atmosphere immaculate (bright and friendly without being kitschy), but the real standout is the staff. I've been a regular there since I moved in nearby, and from the start it was obvious that the people who work there sincerely care about making the experience nice. I've always been greeted with a smile, even during hectic weekend hours when the whole place is packed with a line out the door-- and even on the most full-house days, I've never been made to feel rushed. More than that, I always get the same thing there (I'm just a creature of habit-- every bite I've ever stolen from a friend's plate has also been delectable). The staff have picked up on this and will offer to get me "my usual" when I visit; it makes me feel valued and noticed, and they'll often use the time I would've spent ordering making conversation, asking about my day or the book I'm reading. I've never been to a place with such genuinely friendly staff, and I feel so lucky to live so close! Summed up: I never leave Cafe Moulin without a full stomach and a smile. read more

Stopped by for a late weekend lunch -- they were really busy, even around 1:30 or 2, but fortunately our group of 5 only had to wait around 15 minutes to get seated. The place is pretty spacious with a decent amount of seating, but is apparently quite popular so I hear there's always a queue at peak times. Everything we ordered was so delicious. The french toast was fluffy and sweet without being too heavy. The crepes we got (Bristol, super belgium, Ottawa egg platter) were both super yummy. Turkey meat in the Bristol crepe was juicy and so flavourful, and the brie in the Ottawa one was just such a wonderful complement to the eggy omelette. All the fruits (blueberries, strawberries, bananas), either on the crepes or in the side order, were so fresh. Service was a bit slow (understandable due to how busy it was) but otherwise friendly and helpful. Price point was great for everything we ordered. I'd love to come back in the future :) read more

Came here on a Saturday for lunch around noon. For a table for two, we waited about 30 minutes. You have to be present in the restaurant so they can call your name when the table is ready even though it is very cramped around the door. We ordered some crepes and they were delicious! So flavorful and savory with large portions. The Dubai chocolate was very exciting, pistachio on the inside with chocolate on the outside. The service was a bit disappointing, our server never came around besides to take our order and give the bill. Other than that, we had to track down employees to fill up our water. This is one example of their great balance between sweet and savory. It has the sweetness from the berries and sweet preserve like sauce, but savory flavor from the cheese. To me, it seemed like it skewed toward having too much cheese. The interior cheese tasted a lot like butter, very fatty and soft. I'm not the biggest fan of butter so it wasn't my favorite, but it was obviously well made and the portion was pretty decent. Brunch Review! Overall (Solid 4/5): Cafe Moulin is known for their Crepes and it shows. The Crepe quality is definitely pretty good even compared to the ones in NYC, however, the filling and the flavors inside have some work. The inside really feels like a mix of a cafe and a diner, it is quaint and not bad for a quick bite to eat. It gets busy but not too bad as they have a decent amount of seats inside. If you have a sweet tooth and don't mind the calories, then Cafe Moulin's sweet crepes are for you! I could get any crepe flavor made with the vegan batter. Not as big of a fan of the Tivoli Savory Crepe. Perhaps because the vegan crepe isn't covered with toppings like in the sweet crepe which kind of masks the vegan crepe flavor/texture. As shown, I've come multiple times and satisfied that sweet tooth. I think my favorite was the Super Belgium because of that cookie spread! Impressed by the service as they're always prompt! Needed to be in the Shadyside area, so my husband & I stopped in for bfast. It was good! Nice atmosphere inside. It wasn't busy at all on a Thursday around 10am. We opted for inside seating, given the heat - but there 4 tables mostly under umbrellas outside. They are next to the street, but it's not a busy road at all. Their big thing is crepes, but there are quite a few other options. I chose one of their "toasts," which includes 2 pieces of smashed focaccia with varying toppings. I got the "House toast," which had 2 tasty, circular cuts of Turkish sausage (nicely spiced), a large-ish portion omelette-ish scrambled eggs, with mozzarella and harissa. It wasn't that spicy at all, but the flavors went well together. My husband got a Nutella crepe and added fresh strawberries. It was good - not a lot to it, but it was tasty. We'd already had our coffee at home, so I didn't try anything like that - but their peach iced tea was good. Nothing blew our socks off, but it was certainly a solid breakfast experience and reasonably priced! We'll be back. read more

I wouldn't say bad which is why I'm giving it three stars but i definitely would not go out of my way to recommend this place to anyone. The sweet crêpe was definitely the best but I feel like literally any place that makes crêpes can do that because it's literally just Nutella and fresh fruit. I've been here a total of four times. It's in a great location and is a cute place. I have kept coming back even though I've never been very satisfied. First, by the name and crepes on the menu, you would expect a French food dining experience. The only items on the menu that reflect that are crepes and Nutella, there are no pastries or breads. The omelets are not traditionally lovely, delicate, dreamy things but laden with heavy meats, oily veg, and dense brie....no Chevre. The portions are huge to the point of burdensome, athlete in training size. The salmon crepes came with the top of the crepe COMPLETELY covered in slices of cold-smoked salmon. Generous, but zero subtlety, far too heavy for a delicate crepe. Then there is the service...when I've visited, EACH TIME, it was surly. I won't go back. I'm done. read more

Lived too close to this place so I've been here more times than I can count. It was definitely one of the go-to brunch spot in Shadyside for college students in Pittsburgh, which is justified because the food is consistent and it's overall a solid option for brunch! It's a cute small cafe with pretty small tables -- wouldn't recommend this place for bigger groups (especially because of the wait). They have a ton of savory and sweet options -- crepes, but also toasts, shakshuka, and french toasts. I've probably tried a majority of their menu and haven't found anything I dislike. The flavors and ingredients they use are really familiar and simple -- you won't really find anything surprising or groundbreaking here, but they do it well. My favorites on the menu are the shakshuka, the eggie veggie toast, and the bristol crepe. Portions are pretty large and it's really filling! I always walk out in a minor food coma. The sweet crepes & french toasts are REALLY sweet, if you're into dessert for breakfast. Pictured is the super belgium crepe, with cookie butter, dark chocolate, bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream. So decadent and rich. Since this place is so popular, there's almost always a crazy long wait. You put your name down at the front and wait for your name to get called. Once you're inside, service is quick and efficient.
