It has a roastery, bakery, and several cafes in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and it provides training and equipment to other businesses. My husband and I were customers of this cafe in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood one time. The menu listed coffees, espressos, lattes, teas, hot cocoa, cookies, muffins, scones, sandwiches, etcetera. A refrigerator contained yogurts, juices, oat milk, and other bottled beverages. Shelves held bags of coffees and kettles. Employees kindly took my husband's order and payment and promptly made our beverages. Some tables and chairs were inside the cafe, so we sat down to enjoy our beverages. Other customers were using the dining area to read, spend time with family and friends, and work on laptops. I rate the Chai Latte has 5 stars and the holiday Sugar Plum Latte as 4.5 stars. We enjoyed their flavors. Each beverage was 12 ounces, and their total price was $11 plus tax and tip. I did notice that the cafe was very humid because of the cold weather outside and the many customers inside. The windows had much condensation. I wonder if a dehumidifer would reduce the indoor humidity. read more

My favorite place in pittsburgh!! I loved coming here to study and grab a drink and sit in a cute little shop with friends! I love how sunny it gets here, and how cozy it feels with some of the plant decoration. It's a pretty good place to study, but don't come here if you're expecting it to be super quiet. I loved the employees here and they always made my day so much better when talking to them. Also, I was never disappointed with my drinks, I loved the Matcha, chai, or any of their seasonal flavors. WiFi works well and there are plenty of power outlets. There are a handful of outside tables. The coffee is very good. They focus on supporting small coffee growers. You can buy whole bean occurred, and they provide the details on the growers and coffee processing. The staff are friendly and know the menu well. It seemed pretty good from the street looking in. Commonplace Coffee on Forbes in Squirrel Hill neighborhood is a place to be on a wet Sunday morning. I came here seeking a cup of Joe by a local roaster. The shelves are stocked up with freshly roasted whole bean coffee bags. I almost bought a few bags but I wanted to try it first. I ordered Pour Over with Luis Alberto II Flavor. This method took awhile to brew. Because it's individually prepared. I didn't like the body nor the taste. It was light and sour. But sitting by the window watching the world gone by was pretty relaxing. After I finish my coffee. I went to a bagel shop to get a better tasting coffee. I also didn't like the service. I felt being ignored. I think they were short staffed and those 2 employees were concentrating on their job. read more

I stopped by here this past Sunday with my wife and our twins for our morning coffee. Every Sunday morning we try to hit up a new local coffee shop and on this morning we decided to go to Commonplace Coffee. This commonplace coffee is located righton Forbes Avenue in the heart of the business district in Squirrel Hill. The inside is spacious with exposed ductwork and it has both indoor and outdoor seating. They have signs for where you place your order as well as pick it up and have a display with their baked goods near where you order. For my coffee on this morning I went with a large latte and my wife went with a cold brew. Then we also ordered a plain croissant to split with my twins. After only a couple minute wait, I had everything and we headed outside to sit down. My latte here ended up being quite good. Commonplace always seems to have rich and smooth coffee and today was no exception. The milk provided a nice foil to the coffee as well and I thoroughly enjoyed the latte. Then both of my twins enjoyed the croissant and I did as well. It was flaky and tasted good. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My wife and I both enjoyed our drinks here and the croissant was solid too. read more

Does anyone know how to say "thank you" in this coffee shop? I visited this afternoon and a young man was obviously in barista training as a manager advised him what to do. The shop wasn't busy and he had time to do everything he was told. Everything but say thank you to the customer even after I left a tip in the tip jar. I was appalled. I later returned my cup and saucer to the counter where several employees stood. Not one thanked me nor acknowledged me. There are some indoor and outdoor tables, but it is a pretty cramped space and typically crowded, so I would not recommend it for serious work. We ordered each of the 3 pieces for Thanksgiving and shared them with a friend. They were absolutely delish and very fairly priced. The Apple pie had really great crust and tons of flavor. The sweet potato pie was the best "pumpkin pie" that I've ever had. The flavors of the pear cranberry were really awesome, unfortunately it was under baked so the pears were crunchy versus soft. Even with crunchy pears, it was still really good. They really raised the bar and honestly produced better pies than most bakeries do. I hope that they make them again! read more

I've been to another Commonplace Coffee location, but this one had more tables and seating, though only a few had access to outlets. I found the lighting to be a little too dim to get a lot of reading done, but I enjoyed having free wi-fi to work on my computer. I ordered an iced vanilla latte, which was refreshing, but I regret not adding a more unique syrup flavor, like the vanilla+oak or lemon+rose (a seasonal flavor). I never had any intention of coming here, but I'm sure glad I did. What I appreciated upon first stepping inside, and still love now, is how they update their menu regularly so that you can see what's in stock and what isn't. Ordering is super easy from there, and they get your order ready nice and quickly. And they taste so great! You can eat or drink right there inside at a variety of tables (with OUTLETS, thank heavens!!) or just outside when it's nice out. THE COFFEE WAS SO GOOD! i've tried way too many oat milk vanilla lattes to even count but i absolutely loved theirs. it wasn't too heavy and the flavor and sweetness was just right. it was promptly made with & with beautiful latte art to top it off. they have a decent amount of space to sit, work, relax, meet with friends, etc. and the pricing was fair. service was friendly and they had a nice variety of options to pick from. would recommend this top notch coffee to those in the area!! i do have to say the lighting is a bit dim so keep that mind if you're coming here to do work. read more

I used to love this location and this brand, and also left a 5-star comment before. However recent visit wasn't pleasant at all. The barista accused us of not paying, TWICE, in a very rude way while the other barista who did checked out for one of us failed to communicate to her team member or speak up for us. To differentiate paid vs unpaid goods, you could use stickers or train the staff to be more communicative and aware of what is going on in the shop. The details on what happened is in the photos. I don't know what took me so long to review Commonplace! It's the perfect coffeeshop and probably my favorite in Pittsburgh. The drink I almost aways get is the lavender vanilla latte. It's amazing and tastes good both hot and iced. Commonplace is great for studying (I never felt that it was too loud) or chatting with friends. The baristas are friendly too. I drink every type of coffee....fast food, corner coffee shop, Cafe, and national chains.....I have never had a cup of coffee so undrinkable in my life!! First, I order a medium and it comes in a 10-12 ounce cup....thats a small in my book, but whatever. I had to resort to cream and sugar in an attempt to squelch the obnoxious bitter flavor!! Commonplace Coffee has an earned reputation for being the hippest coffee shop in Squirrel Hill. If you're already in the neighborhood this is a great place to come for a top notch cup of coffee, pull of espresso, or quality latte art. Many Pittsburgh businesses happily use the Commonplace beans for their house coffee, and the minimalist logo can be seen on hats, totes and hydroflasks all around the city. As a result of this local fame, the Squirrel Hill location is almost always thick with coffee connoisseurs. If you can find a seat on the weekend this is an excellent place to catch up with friends, do some reading, or bust out some homework. It is also a great place to run into a familiar face or two. Squirrel Hill is a very tight knit community and this is definitely the preferred daytime watering hole for most of us (rivaling Coffee Tree Roasters across the street). Be warned, the word is out on Commonplace. I mentioned above that this shop has an earned reputation, and for this reason it is a very high traffic venue. For this reason the furniture layout was recently reworked to accomodate more customers. The change was definitely a blessing for the Commonplace groupies, but on a cold Saturday afternoon the extra seating is still sucked up like a shallow puddle into a parched sponge. The weekend saturation is a blessing and a curse. Obviously it means that the business is rightfully thriving due to its competitive standards. This benefits the business owner, and the killer baristas who earn their tips with skill and flare. On the flip side, the business has become so popular that it can't always accomodate the fans that enjoy drinking coffee while cooling their heels among post industrial vibes and quiet indie tunes. This exclusivity only drives the hip factor higher, and tends to stretch the line at the register longer. I write this review with guilty bitterness. I am a long time patron that is slowly finding that one of my favorite coffee shops might not be as dependable as I remember. I love local coffee shop culture in PGH! But then I am a bit too spoiled by all the hight quality coffee shops in town... To be fair, commonplace serves good coffee. Was kinda disappointed when I went the first time in June, because I was expecting something even better then TD for some reason. The foam in my latte was heated too long (thus too firm and too hot), and the spro was chalky. I decided to give them a second chance tho, since there're so many good baristas working there. The latte significantly better this time, without any of the issue I had in the first visit, plus their interior design got a bit better as time goes by. Still not a place I would come all the way from highland, shadyside, or lawrenceville for a cup of coffee, but it's definitely a great choice if I am around the area. read more
