My sister and I got there close to opening because the Mom in us wanted as much time as we could to explore the beautiful city together (it's not often we get time alone, LOL). I asked the barista to surprise me, and she slung up an amazing cinnamon honey latte! I have to admit it might be my new favorite! Food was pretty decent I got a breakfast burrito about 7/10 I wasn't too sure what was inside but it was pretty tastey with spicy sauce. Service was great everyone was nice and they brought the food and drink directly to you!! Overall cozy ambiance, it was a little crowded but people were moving in and out pretty well so everyone was able to sit and enjoy their drinks if they wanted. I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for our morning coffees. Every Sunday morning we try to hit up a new coffee shop and on this day we decided to try this location of Commonplace Coffee. It's located right on Penn Ave in Garfield and was pretty sleepy on this morning. The inside consists of a coffee bar with a display case for some of their branded merchandise as well as a cloche with their pastries. Beyond that they had a couple of tables worth of seating and some interesting art on their walls. There were two baristas working on this morning and I ended up ordering a cappuccino for myself and the one of their seasonal lattes, an almond cinnamon one, for my wife. In addition to that we also got a croissant to munch on. I first tried the croissant. The flavor of it was good but it felt a little dense and probably could have used a bit of a warm up to give it a little better texture. After that I tried my wife's latte and really enjoyed it, especially the almond forward flavor of it with the hint of cinnamon at the end. She really loved it too. Then last but certainly not least I was able to try my cappucino. The coffee flavor was strong in it which I appreciated and then I also got some of the whole milk flavor which was nice. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. While the croissant wasn't the best, both of our coffee drinks were definitely good. read more

I have been a frequent customer, but after a recent experience, I will not return. The employees and management should have more respect for customers. The attitude of some of the employees is off putting. Instead of greeting customers in a normal friendly way, there is an unwelcoming attitude. You can expect a lecture about straws and social issues along with your coffee. It's as if the employees don't understand what their actual job is, coffee. always been a fan of the commonplace's, and this location definitely did not disappoint. compared to the one in Squirrel Hill, the amount of lighting and seating is so much better: way more natural light from the big windows and many more seating options! I got the cappuccino and it was basically the same taste as the other location. the service here seems even friendlier than the other location which was a nice surprise. I will definitely be coming back to this location to study or hang out in the future!! 5-star for baristas but 3-star for coffee beans after changing the ownership. I just cannot love the commonplace coffee bean, sorry :( It's somehow has a taste of ash to me. Had a skim latte that I order everywhere (except 21th, which doesn't serve skim). Had to say the barista controlled the skim milk foam VERY well! It doesn't have the problem that many places have to make the skim foam too firm. Its runny and creamy therefore the double rosetta in my cup is tender and elegant. Also thumb up for their lavender brownie! Sigh...only if they can use some other beans and I will love this place.... read more

The vibe here is different than the Squirrel Hill and MWS locations - I'd say it's quieter, and usually less busy, and pretty modern in its decor. I worked here with a friend for about 2 hours on a weekday morning. I loved the table space that Commonplace provides, and the cold brew was pretty good too. It has a no-pressure, chill vibe that made me want to come again. There were some minor inconveniences that didn't outweigh the good for me. For example, for about 10 minutes around 11 a.m., there was a very strong smell that we thought was burning plastic. It was kind of distracting, but no one else was alarmed, so we just decided to ignore it. And then parking was a bit tough at 9 in the morning. There were a couple of spaces in the back of the development, but they were all filled. Street parking around the corner was available, but it was on a slanted street (I know, not exactly rare for Pittsburgh), and it was far enough away for me to find it a bit inconvenient. It was a 2-hour permit parking zone, so I couldn't stay longer like I wanted to. Overall, Commonplace was a great place to do work and hunker down for a couple hours. I like working here because it's quiet, bright and has fast WiFi. It's pretty warm as long as you don't sit right next to the door. The music was relaxed and right at the sweet spot for volume. After 2 pm there might be a bit too much sunlight right next to window seats but it makes it warmer so I quite enjoy it. The staff is friendly and welcoming. This Commonplace is no common place (see what I did there?)! It's extraordinary. It's cozy. I found myself inspired inside. I half wonder if JK Rowling posted-up here to write book 3 (it would have to be book 3). I like the location and design of this shop. The inside has a lot of seating and is a great working spot. There are shared tables, smaller tables, high top seating... many options. I will come here to work (not so comfy to sit and read for a long time, but you could!). The coffee is amazing. Quality. Commonplace is quality. I love the Americano. Get a small Americano and you won't be disappointed. There's plenty of side street parking to get to this coffee shop. I actually like that about this location. You can park for a while, grab some nearby food, and sit and talk or work at Commonplace for a couple hours. Employees are nice. Helpful. Friendly. I have a great experience every time I come. Sick of the ordinary, regular, mundane coffee shops... ironically, you should go to Commonplace. It's a beautiful paradox. read more

I'm writing this review in regards to finding a nice coffee shop to get some work done. I am in Pittsburgh for the weekend visiting family and I needed a place to work throughout the day on Friday. This place was recommended to me from a friend and it was so close by. This is a great space for coming in and working. High ceilings, a lot of seating, very open feeling. When I'm in most coffee shops I feel like I am on top of everyone or congested with all my stuff (laptop, notepad, bag, etc.) on a small table. Commonplace Coffee had enough space where I was comfortable even when it was pretty full. The music was at a great volume, it's crazy how other places it is so loud I can't even concentrate. I would absolutely come in here again if I lived around the neighborhood. The variety of seating options was a small thing but something I can appreciate; cushioned seats, long or high tables, and counter room. Enough options for everyone if you ask me. If you've ever worked in a coffee shop, I think you would appreciate some of those things. If not, probably sounds a little random. Also, I got a hot chocolate and it was pretty good. Commonplace has exceptional coffee, a great vibe, and knowledgeable staff, however if you are looking for a coffee shop to go and meet friends to catch up, this may not be your place. I am having such a hard time not giving them 5 stars because of this. My boyfriend and I stopped by after a day out to have coffee and unwind. We ended up ordering it to go because the place was filled with people studying, working, or engaging in something on their laptops with absolute silence. This was on a Saturday, of all days. We intended to just sit quietly by the window and talk among ourselves, but while we waited for our coffee to brew, someone asked another person to stop making so much noise because it was distracting. I'm no coffee connoisseur, the latte I had this morning was delicious and definitely hit the spot on a cold winter day like today. Coffee selection was fair, not as expansive as some of the other local cafes, but what they make they seem to make very well. Very quick service made everything convenient - good place if you're on the run or trying to stay a bit. Did I say free wifi? I went in the middle of the day during a weekday and didn't expect to see the crowd that I did. There were about three groups that came in so the noise level was a little higher than I expected. I think if seating was a bit more group friendly it would be better. Seemed a bit cramped for the volume they seem to get. The interior wasn't as comfortable as I would have hoped or liked for a cafe. It wasn't very cozy with the hard top tables and chairs, but there was a window bar. I thought was a nice touch. I also like there were two high top tables. With paper lantern lighting I'm not sure what style to call it exactly, but it wasn't a bad vibe. This place is a little expensive, and I just needed somewhere to work, so I got the cheapest thing, which was iced tea. It was pretty good. The vibe was nice - it was just noisy enough that you could focus without it being distracting. They also had vegan, gluten-free donuts which I would have loved to try had I not already had my sweet treat for the day. They served my iced chai in a glass. Like, an actual glass glass. You don't get those these days (what, am I like 80??). In the ye olden days of my life I was a Bucks Barista. We USED to serve iced drinks in a real glass. This was back in the day when the Bucks had a "small" coffee house vibe. Gone are those days! Come to think of it, do they even offer "for here" mugs for hot drinks anymore?? It's such a nice REAL coffee house perk to have that option! There's plenty of room to work for the day and the Internet is FREE! Major perk! The Barista here was also extremely nice and helpful when I asked her what kind of chai they served. She didn't groan when I asked, like some jaded B's do. It was an organic brand I had never heard of before and it was great! Not too sugary and just the right amount of spice (forgive me for not remembering the brand!). I was STARVING too with no lunch and noticed they carried Sustainable Rustic Bakery goods. The B told me they are located in the Pittsburgh Public Market as well. I picked up what looked like a massive size fig newton. It was incredible!! And made me feel much better about myself knowing that the ingredients are all natural. Maybe not the best lunch option, but it was awesome....I'll def be hitting them up at PPM!
