I was very disappointed with Pink Box Bakery Cafe 粉红屋烘焙坊. The day I arrived in Squirrel Hill, I came to buy a taro moon cake for $3.00. It tasted stale. The only part with purple color was the tip of the shell. I can see grease soaked the wax paper on the bottom of the cake. Not sure how long it sat there on the shelf. So, I went back next morning to see if they have fresher ones on the shelves. I saw the one I left the night before. Ahhh... moon cakes must be shelf stable. Not! Each baked goods should have date time stamps. I felt cheated. Pink Box Bakery is the only Chinese bakery in Squirrel Hill. I think I'll go to Korean or French Bakery on my next visit. read more

The owner is such a nice guy and the pastries are very fresh. It is rare to see this level of homemade Chinese pastries these days, and I was very surprised. The bubble tea was also very good. Pork floss bun is the best i've ever had. Fragrant and savory, yet creamy. I ordered a taro cake and the owner was making it even though they hurt their arm and had to go to the urgent care. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The shop is cute and filled with nothing but yum. Some of the best tasting treats around. Coconut goodness. I was having one of those I need to satisfy my mom's sweet tooth Sundays with something that screams delicious... stopped in and picked up a packaged freshly baked sweet bread. It was soft and tasty. Wish photography did justice on flavor but I just chose a buttercream sliced coconut bread and a few nutty ones. Love this bakery! Really reminds me of my childhood when we would always get breakfast at a Chinese bakery cafe. The pastries are all delicious and authentic. They are very reasonably priced as well. We talked to a guy who may have been the owner while we were there and the mooncakes are very authentic and similar to the ones his mom would make back in Taiwan. The moon cakes were basically all sold out on Mid Autumn Festival Day. They have milk bread here, lots of pineapple bun varieties, pork floss bread, egg tarts, and sponge cakes. I Have to say I was extremely disappointed in Pink Box Bakery. I was in the area and was in the need desperately for something sweet. I decided on Pink Box Bakery as it was almost across the street from where I was and I had never been there before. I walked in and it was about 1pm and there virtually was nothing there for sale???????? What the heck no cookies no cake no pastries, What kind of bakery is this. there where 2 ladies sitting by the register talking to each other. They totally ignored me did not say hi did not ask if I needed anything. They totally ignored me which was more disturbing than a bakery with no baked goods?????????? I would have come back again to try the pastries if it had not been for the poor customer service. I hate being ignored when I go into a place of business. Not even a hello how can I help you which is standard business protocol. I have to say I would never go back again and I suggest you do not go as well. It's a bit difficult to judge Pink Box, simply because I only tried one item. However, what I can say is that Pink Box seems to be a solid Asian bakery. In fact, it's one of the few Asian bakeries in Pittsburgh. I tried the custard bun (regular vanilla, not chocolate). The price is alright for the bun. Portion wise, it's about the size of my hand, so quite large. The custard filling is creamy and has a slight acidic taste to it, almost like a light hint of lemon. I would have liked a bit more custard, but it's not an empty pastry either. The bread surrounding it is fluffy but relatively flavorless. I expected the pastry bread to be sweetened and it seemed not to be. All in all, some of the items are a little expensive. But, this place is pretty authentic, offers a good variety, and the items are seemingly fairly good quality. I'm definitely glad we have an Asian bakery in Pittsburgh, and I'll occasionally stop by. read more

Finally went here the first time for an after dinner treat! From a Western perspective, the flavors are generally lighter and less rich/sweet than I'm used to. More custard, bean, milky flavors vs. the heavy chocolate and butter that you see in American baked goods. I feel like I would really enjoy a lot of the buns for a tea or breakfast treat. One other thing that's a little different to me, but I liked, was how everything is individually packaged and you can pick out items yourself. It was nice to be able to look at everything closely, as opposed to many bakeries where the food is all in a display case and staff select for you. Stopped in for the first time today looking for some tasty morsels to remind me of my 2 years in Hong Kong. While living in HK I learned to love the Pineapple Buns, Cocktail Buns and Portuguese egg tarts among other things. I asked the cashier if they had the cocktail buns and was sorely disappointed when she indicated that they don't make them... however, to my surprise they did have a pineapple bun that was stuffed with the same coconut paste that I had come to love from the cocktail bun! It was like a 2-for-1 deal! I promptly picked out one of those, a clamshell of Portuguese tarts and one of Taiwanese tarts and devoured them outside the store at one of the tables. I went to Pink Box for the first time yesterday & picked up the Taiwanese taro mooncakes ($3/piece, $9/box) & a pineapple coconut bun, my go-to bun when I go to a Chinese/East Asian bakery. The pineapple coconut bun was unordinary, if not disappointing--milk bread surrounding a standard sweetened coconut flake center, with a soggy topping. As for the taro mooncakes, I was upset at how strangely off these were. The filling was sour(?) and the swirly skin/exterior tasted like raw flour. I typically like my desserts to be less sweet, but this was simply not sweet at all. I'm not sure if they were already stale when I bought them, but something was definitely not right about this recipe. For now, I'll keep hoping a quality Asian bakery comes to Pittsburgh. read more

But, it's just not really all that good. Compared to Suzanne's in Millbrae CA, or Chiu Quon in Chicago, the baked goods are just not quite there. I come here almost every time I come to Squirrel Hill as there are no Chinese bakeries in Pittsburgh outside of this area. The selection is pretty limited but everything is pretty fresh. They sell Japanese cheesecake which is amazing and rare here but the quality of it has gone downhill recently. It used to have more fresh fruit topping and more of the cheesecake itself but now half the cake is whipped cream. At $3.95 a slice, you're pretty much paying for the whipped cream--yikes! What I do like is that everything is lower in sugar and looks like a puffy cloud. Presentation is great here! Wish the girl at the register was a little more friendly. I come here all the time and she always seems annoyed when I'm purchasing things. She has never greeted me or said "thank you" or "goodbye." We had a most delicious & light and fluffy taro cake to celebrate Chinese New Year. It was beautifully decorated with fresh berries on top. Taro flour is gluten free, but I'm not certain if the entire cake is gluten free? You'd have to inquire. The inside of the cake was light & fluffy and the cream and icing not too sweet at all. Have been going here for months. I would highly recommend if you are interested in trying or looking for an Asian bakery (Chinese). I will say if you can, try to go earlier in the day or not a Sunday because I have noticed that the place has certain late hours some days where you get the leftover pickings and they taste more dry. However most of the time this is not the case. I also highly recommend trying their milk teas, the owner claims to be the first business in Pittsburgh to sell it. And I believe it! They're delicious and more flavorful (less watered down) than many other bubble tea shops. My go-to is a couple of Mochi red bean paste filled pastries. The savory pastries are also great for breakfast on the go the next day! They also do custom cake orders although I have not used that service. read more

How can you not love a Pink Box? I've loved a lot of Pink Boxes in my day, but none quite like this one. This Pink Box, in reality, is a Taiwanese Bakery owned by same people that own Rose Tea. It clearly has an awesome name and awesome decor too. It feels like a little square pink box inside. Like you are inside an Xmas present from VS Pink, perhaps. Some of the servers are super friendly, although one in particular wasn't. One of the really friendly ones was a beautiful girl from Albania, talking to her was fun. I find their baked goods to be somewhat average, made in advance and pre-packaged, and their Bubble Tea reminds me of the one over at the similarly-owned Rose Tea Cafe. I got the black milk tea, and it wasn't bad, but it was nowhere near as good as the one across the street at Sumi's Cakery. The tapioca balls were kind of squidgy, which I didn't really appreciate. And it was a little tasteless. I guess a Pink Box is preferable to a Brown Box though. read more

Cute little shop. There's a bunch of rows of different pastries, and a really nice, wide variety. I got the coconut bun which was $2. The bread was fresh and the topping was good, but there wasn't that much of it. I got their mango bubble tea, regular sized, for 2.75. They also offer a large. Boba and other toppings are an extra 50 cents each. The regular size is actually pretty small, and the ice is small too so when you drink from the straw, you get boba and ice. Also, they are kinda sparse on the amount of boba they give. They don't take credit card unless your total cost is up to $10. I found the staff slightly unfriendly, and thought the breads were a little pricey, especially because a lot of Asian bakeries are usually a lot cheaper, however, if you're in the area, definitely come try the place out. read more

Pink box is a Taiwanese style bakery. I was so excited when they first opened my first year in Pittsburgh. I miss it so much. Everything they baked is fresh and very authentic. They also have many different flavor cakes such as taro, coffee, mango, vanilla...etc. I noticed there is a book for custom made cake, I would update my review if I ever tried them. I always come here to get their toast, taro toast, wide variety of bread bun, or the pastry bean pasted filled balls. They're phenomenal. The only thing I would suggest improving is the price, it could definitely be lower. The bread shop in philly is half of the price here. However, there isn't much competition in Pittsburgh for Asian bakery. Besides that, keep up the good work pink box! read more

My last visit to Pittsburgh was not an exception, as I found Pink Box during a late night search for bakeries. While the name and interior are cute, I did not find their buns to be exactly too pleasing. Not sure if it resulted from the buns sitting there too long (it was late) or missing ingredients/techniques, but the buns were mediocre ... however, edible. On my way to work one day I had decided to detour myself around the Parkway East traffic. I had also decided to do something nice for my coworkers. That's how I ended up here at Pink Box Bakery Cafe. I had done a quick search for a bakery to bring in a treat for everyone. This place isn't hard to find in Squirrel Hill. I mean it is a bright pink storefront. If you can miss that, I guess you don't deserve to come here. It is always nice walking into a bakery. All those sweet smells that instantly make your stomach grumble in anticipation. There are plenty of pre-made treats to be had in here, but I went straight to the cake display case and knew that all those cupcakes were coming with me. ALL THE CUPCAKES! (If you happened to be there that day, I apologize...somewhat, for taking all the cupcakes (but deep down inside, no, I'm not sorry)) It seemed a bit pricey at the time for the cupcakes, but once my coworkers and I took our first bites, they were worth every penny. Half were white with white icing and candy shavings on them. The other half were chocolate with chocolate icing and chocolate shavings on them. Both topped with a half of a sandwich cookie. Everyone raved over how good they were and that they weren't too sweet. And this is what floored me, no one had any idea that Pink Box existed. I had to keep telling them where it was. This place reminds me of the bakeries I used to go to in Taiwan. It is a bit small, but it has all the classics! My go-tos are the pork sung, pork sung w/ green onions, pineapple bun w/ milk butter filling, and the matcha pineapple bun. (also, "pineapple bun" is a misnomer. It's not actually pineapple flavored, it just gets its name from the appearance of the topping.) they're also very consistent. I've been a few times now, and everything tastes the same / delicious. We finally stopped by Pink Box one night after months and months of meaning to. I really like how this place stays open till 10pm, since other nearby bakeries usually close by 7 or 8pm. After looking at our available options, my husband and I took home 3 buns: (1) pineapple green tea with red bean filling: I love pineapple buns, especially ones with red bean filling. This is the one bun I always get at every Taiwanese bakery. But who would have thought to incorporate green tea into it?? The green tea was a really nice touch and gave the good ol pineapple bun a nice kick to it. (2) pineapple bun with milk cream filling; (3) milk cream puff pastry bun; (2) and (3) were similar except for the exterior but I personally didn't like the milk cream filling, it was a little too salty for me. I do agree with Laura M. that this place is overpriced. I'm used to paying $1.25 -1.50 per bun, but here they charge anywhere from $1.75-2.25, and more for cakes and tarts. This place is unmissable. It's very much a giant pink box. I got a taro cake from here for my friend's birthday. The saleswoman was very nice, and she came around from behind the counter to help me pick out a cake. Our interaction went like this: Me: I need a cake for 6 people, what size would you recommend? Her: Do you like cake? Because you can split the 6", but if you like cake you should maybe get the 8" I did in fact get the 8", because it was the only size they had available for the taro flavor. I suspect they don't ready-make taro in the 6" size? Sneaky Apparently we don't like cake because the 8" was way to much for my group of 6. Nevertheless we very much enjoyed this cake, and the leftovers the next day were equally delicious. I like very rich and sweet frosting, so I was skeptical when I saw other reviews describing the frosting as "not too sweet".
