I realize that with this bakery it depends on who is baking.I have honestlly bought items from here that were decent. Paddy Cake is hit and miss. I bought a cake from here and it taste like white paper. It was bland and dry. I was going to reverse the chargae but I winded up throwing it out. Oh, and it was for my sister's birthday. We winded up getting a cake from Giant Eagles and that cake was so much better. It is sad when a supermarket's bake goods are better than a local bakery's offerings. Pittsburgh used to have some all around good bakeries and there are a few that are always good. Paddy Cake is not one of them. We need consistence. Not hit and miss. Do Better. read more

I was in the Bloomfield area on national donut day and knew I had to stop into this bakery. I'm so glad that I did! Though the interior is small, the cases are FULL. There were several friendly employees working to get the crowd in and out in a very efficient way. I bought a half dozen +1 extra donut. They packaged the donuts with care, to ensure that none of them got smooshed in transit. I personally tasted the glazed and the strawberry crunch. I would say their donuts lean a little more towards the cakey side of the spectrum vs the more chewy Amish style that I'm used to. They were definitely fresh and huge and it's a plus that, I think, all donuts are the same price regardless of design/toppings/flavors. read more

Cute little bakery on main drag of Bloomfield. Great selection of products, average/reasonable pricing as far as bakeries are concerned in my opinion. We went because my friend wanted a pakzi which they only make on Thursdays and Fridays. They had a small selection left when we arrived of unique flavors not your average cream and jelly. They had strawberry pretzel salad, almond torte and an Oreo one. She settled in the Oreo with chocolate cream. The service was fast and friendly and helpful since we explained it was our first visit. We tried a small variety of things, 1/4lb cookie, cannoli, thumbprint, sandwich cookies and a brookie. Everything was delicious! read more

My new spot! This bakery has so much variety and the cases are always full, even around noon. It is very small inside and no where to sit, but the staff is super nice and knowledgable and quick to turn around a line. I am a fan of their tiramisu squares. Traditional tiramisu but with out the traditional price point. Everything is super affordable. I also like their giant cookies. The cosmic brownie cookie is to die for; fudgy brownie cookie with rich fudge icing and a couple of those classic cosmic sprinkles. Honestly a great bakery in Bloomfield! The staff is always very nice and their tiramisu is stellar!! It's always the bite I look forward to at Little Italy Days. My family LOVES Paddy Cake! We always get their cakes and cupcakes for special occasions and they never disappoint. Everything is very reasonably priced. I just stopped in for Memorial Day weekend and got a single layer chocolate cake for only $6.99. A dozen cookies was about the same price, depending on if you get iced cookies or more expensive ones. Can we talk about the apple fritter for a minute? I am not one to order a donut for a breakfast treat... I more so go for a scone or something to dip in coffee. The cake artists have definitely amped up their game in the past years from plain flowers and balloons to full blown Star Wars characters like Chewbacca and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda.) The true sleeper star at Paddy Cake Bakery that any local will rave about... the donuts. I recently stopped by to pick up a post dentist-visit treat (yes... I love going to this bakery after getting my teeth cleaned as it's only a few blocks from my dentist's office.) A long long time ago, as in when I was in high school, Paddy Cake only offered their delicious dones on Friday mornings. If you slept in, you weren't getting them. Luckily for me I would stop in on the way to school to snag one, usually when they were still warm. While their donut selection has become a staple menu item and grown considerably from the very few types of offerings, I always stay true to the glazed donuts. It's like and airy. There was a strange smell in the bakery when I entered that was not so appeasing. I picked up a tiramisu (didn't notice it until someone called out), a chocolate eclair, a cream puff and a small cannoli. They all tasted good, with the tiramisu being exceptional! Paddy Cake is a great spot and has wonderful offerings. The location and hours are great and the old school vibe is awesome. They're quick and efficient here. There are things from cookies to muffins to cakes to bread loafs. I stop here for an occasion pastry and have tried the raisin egg bread. The doughnuts are good, but definitely more preservatives than I care for. The raisin egg bread is good, not as heavy as challah bread. I ended up using it to make French toast and it worked really well. The prices here are very affordable. As some say, it does get the job done. Being nearby it's good to have this option. read more

The three woman working the day I had went there were all super friendly and nice. It was the day before Easter and we stopped in from being at the hospital. It was so nice to grab fresh air and fresh bake goodies. There was so much to choose and pick from. The decor on the baked goods were super cute and I was obsessed with my dipped chocolate peep. Back for a visit in the Burg and decided to take bus 54, a nice leisurely bus if you want Strip, Lawrenceville. Bloomfield or Oakland. We got off near Paddycake in Bloomfield and with fond memories of my childhood, popped in. What a wide selection of stuff. Cakes, half cakes, cookies, doughnuts, fancy desserts, danish... they have it. We didnt need anything but just took in the ambiance and the smells and ended up with two bear claws which were large and stuffed with nuts. I do wish prices were posted. I might have bought more but felt too embarrassed to repeatedly ask "how much is this, how much is that" My idea of $ is about 15% less at least for my bear claws. The bear claws had that old time bakery taste that I remember from my youth. Hard to describe the sweet dough but my mouth recognized it. Do not buy too much in advance because this stuff is meant to be eaten and like all fresh things goes stale quicker than store bought stuff. Undoubtedly you fill find stuff here that will satisfy your sweet tooth with that old Pittsburgh friendliness. We stopped in yesterday 15 minutes before close to pick up some goodies and all of the ladies working were doing was being snarky and complaining that people were coming in so close to close. One of them even said loudly enough that all of your customers could hear her say, " Where were all of these people an hour ago?" I can tell you where I was an hour earlier and it was at work. So if your employees have a problem with people coming in so close to closing maybe your working, paying customers should go to another bakery and then the complaining employees won't have to work because they'll be unemployed. Snacks? Carrot cake & Almond torte! I also purchased pecan rolls but forgot to take a picture of it! I got the carrot cake for Tone but he liked Moio's better. The almond torte was okay. Nothing to go back for! ‍ The pecan rolls weren't what I remembered them to be. They were dry & not worth the calories! I only took a few bites. The first was of the outer layer but I gave it another chance thinking... hey, it's just because it's the outer layer. But, the inside wasn't good either. It didn't seem fresh! Well, first off I should confess that I love all things bakery. It's hard to pass one by when I'm in a neighborhood. Okay, full disclosure - I will literally never pass by an open bakery without stopping in. This one in Bloomfield was a great stop! Suppressing the desire to just say "One or two of everything!" I made varied selections of pastries, Danish, cookies, nut horn, plus whatever they had maple (as my daughter likes maple stuff...me not so much). Just a couple or few bags full and a box. The lady that took my order was quite nice, and my selections cost was less than I'd expected, so good prices too! Stopping at my daughters to drop off her maple stuff, and cookies for my grandson, she was happy, as Paddy's is one of her favorite bakeries (neither of us live anywhere near there). This bakery has been a long-time favorite for me. When my Dad worked in Bloomfield, he would always return with a treat from Paddy Cake. Fast forward 20 years, and Paddy Cake is still a solid choice for something sweet in the Bloomfield area. The location is prime for two reasons: 1st - it is in walking distance to the hospital, so you can temporarily save your loved ones from nasty jello and meals served on trays. 2nd - There is a Starbucks next door. Stop by Paddy cake and pair a fresh donut or cake slice with your coffee. Paddy Cake prices are dangerously low. Dangerous in the sense of "How did I walk away with 6000 calories of sweets for $5?" The only downside is the selection. Sometimes, I am expecting a specific treat (such as their giant apple fritter), and it is sold out or wasn't in the display case that day. If you want something in particular, please call ahead! They are happy to make whatever treat you are seeking with advance notice, but I generally just walk in. Very friendly service and amazing price! So much bang for the buck, got a half dozen donuts for just about $5... that's crazy. There is so much variety and the place smells delicious! I don't love that there is no seating but that's often common. The difference between three and four stars here is the taste. We arrived today before 9 am and the baked goods already didn't taste freshly baked. As far as im concerned it was too early in the morning for that to be the case. This bakery located on liberty ave right next to Starbucks. It is a busy place in the morning on weekdays. I came in on a Thursday and had to wait about five min for my turn to order. I got a dozen of donut which was alright, but the price is very reasonable. I also got three pastries, chocolate turnover, apple turnover, and this huge cinnamon wheel thingy. I'll say everything was good but not memorable. They also sell variety of cookies. I'll definitely give this place another try, but so far I'll say solid three stars. read more

Anyone who knows me--or reads my reviews--has probably figured out by now that I have a formidable sweet tooth (thanks, Mom!). This weekend, my mission to try out every bakery within PGH city limits (or at least, in the neighborhoods I frequent) brought me to Paddy Cake, since I was in Bloomfield to pick up some items at Donatelli's. Having sampled several of their baked goods, if I had to sum up my impression in a word, it would be...inconsistent. The baked goods I tried ran the full gamut from excellent to mediocre to awful. Despite having covered 1/3-1/2 of PGH's bakeries and several in other towns, I've never been to one before where I came away with such a mixed experience. Here are my assessments of the individual treats I tried, in order from best to worst: Tiramisu: 4.5 stars--This tiramisu is right up there with Groceria Italiana's as one of the best I've had. If you enjoy this dessert, you won't be disappointed--just eat it within a day or so, since the ladyfingers dry out after that, even in the fridge. Lemon tart: 4.5 stars--The filling struck a perfect sweet-tart balance and was smooth and thick and creamy, but not overly so. The only part of this pastry that could bear improvement was the crust, which was forgettable. Chocolate iced chocolate mini-cupcake: 4 stars--I wasn't expecting to care much for this 69 cent cupcake, but I was pleasantly surprised. The cake was soft and velvety, and the buttercream icing was okay to good. I only wish I'd picked up one of the cute ones decorated like a groundhog for Groundhog Day! Chocolate iced donut: 3.5 stars--Despite their apparent popularity and what other reviewers have said, I found this cake donut to be mediocre, only slightly besting Dunkin's versions. The dough was a tad on the dry side, and the icing had a very commercial taste, similar to icing available in the grocery store. Danish: 3 stars--I found the cheese and raspberry danishes pretty average in flavor, and on the small side for the price ($1.29 each). Cinnamon roll: 2.5 stars--For reasons beyond my comprehension, many bakeries in PGH, including this one, don't seem to get that the key to a great cinnamon roll is...wait for it...lots of cinnamon! Aside from being skimpy on the key ingredient, the consistency of the dough was too wet/oily, making for a disappointing version of my favorite bakery treat. (They also had non-fried cinnamon buns, but they bore a striking resemblance to Entenmann's, so I decided against trying one.) Cookies: 2 stars--It befuddles me how one cookie I ordered (triple chocolate iced, which looked amazing in the case) was gooey in the middle to the point that it was clearly undercooked, while the other one (peanut butter chocolate chip) was overcooked to the point that it was hard and brittle. Also, both cookies were iced with the same commercial-tasting chocolate icing used on the donuts. In terms of the offerings, as others have mentioned, there's nothing that really sets Paddy Cake apart, since they don't have any unique products (e.g., Prantl's), and they don't seem to focus in any specific type(s) of baked goods (e.g., Colangelo's, Vanilla Pastry Studio). Having said that, service was friendly and efficient, and prices were very reasonable (all of the above came to slightly north of $10). Thus, while I may stop by occasionally while I'm in Bloomfield, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here specifically. 3.5 stars. read more

At my place of employment, The Asylum For The Criminally Inane, a number of people were celebrating a birthday, me included. This meant...cake...from Paddy Cake! And what a bodaciously buttercreamed and marvelously moist commemorative cake it was to be. While not up to the lofty levels of a Bethel Bakery, Potomac, or Party Cake, Paddy's certainly would make it to the semi-finals of the tournament. As a result of this gesture, I am now known as Darren, Destroyer of Sheet Cakes. I didn't eat THAT much, but you know that legends are always twice-told tales that run away from the original source. P.S. I've had donuts from Paddy Cake a number of times over the 20 years I've been working in the Lawrenceville/Bloomfield area, and they've consistently been top-shelf, particularly the ones that are filled with a cream that is Cool Whip to the tenth power. read more

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night screaming, "I NEED TO GO TO PADDY CAKE BAKERY". Okay, that may be a lie, but if you've been here you'd know why I'm saying this. As much as I love the newfangled bakeries such as Vanilla and the now defunked Dozen, to me, there is nothing like a good old fashioned take a number type of bakery. Paddy Cake is located on Liberty Avenue near West Penn Hospital. If you blink you'd miss it which leaves more cookies for me. It's hard to describe the desserts with any other adjective other than delicious. I hate to sound corny and easy to please but the thumbprints are to die for. Everything I've bought there has been better than I anticipated. Donuts- amazing. Cookies- wonderful. Pastries- Delicious. I think you get the point. The Paddy Cake Bakery is one of my all time favorite Pittsburgh bakeries. It's a small bakery in Bloomfield that you really won't want to miss! You walk in are first and foremost consumed by a beautiful aroma of baking and baked goods: countless assorted cookies, from simple sugar cookies to thumbprints, almond cookies, chocolate, decorated, peanut butter blossoms, and so on; doughnuts; pies; cakes; breads; tarts.... I could go on, but there isn't enough space on this page! When I'm in the Burgh I love to go in just for a few chocolate thumbprint cookies, and if I'm really craving a sweet I'll grab a (couple!) petti fours too! (And a doughnut ). The thing is, I don't often have a sweet tooth, but when I do, I absolutely love splurging here. I'd have a photo, but I are my cookies in the car this time.. but no fear! I've stopped at Paddy Cake Bakery several times since moving to the East End of Pittsburgh. While the selection seems more geared towards sweet baked goods then breads, it's still extremely well stocked and the staff is some of the friendliest I've met in Bloomfield. I'd love to see some more bread, roll, bagel, etc options as I rarely partake in sweet baked goods. The hours, while not really accommodating for someone who leaves for work at 6:50am and doesn't get home till 6:10pm, are still long enough to be accessible to most people. I will say though that while the selection of sweets is large, none of the things I've tried have really struck me as unique to this bakery or to the East End. I think that if the bakers in the back took some time to develop some signature items that would make them stand out from the general bakery and I'd most likely not stop anywhere else. read more

My family had been going to Paddy Cake for years; a couple of decades at least. When my sister got married 25 years ago they delivered the scrumptious wedding cake to Robinson Twp. with no delivery fee. My mom still talks about that service today. Now that I live in Bloomfield I feel it's dangerous but in a good way, lol. A couple of months ago I wanted a banana cream pie for the birthday of someone very close to me. My custom order was perfection. We have an upcoming celebration for a campaign I'm involved with that requires a cake. I've been in touch with the bakery and they're more than happy to bake the cake and decorate it with our logo. I wouldn't trust anyone else for special occasion baked goods. OK is a good way to describe it. The scones are a high point for sure. Blueberry and Cinnamon are my favorites. I like the donuts too. I've had a cake from here as well and it was good -- though I still favor giant eagle in that department. The prices are very reasonable and they always have something on special.
