I am on the hunt for the best biscuits and gravy in the Burgh. I asked Reddit to throw some suggestions my way, and Bluebird Kitchen made the cut. So while running some errands, I stopped by. I picked up a large order of biscuits and gravy and a hand-squeezed orange juice. The service was very pleasant and the order came up quickly. The orange juice didn't even make it all the way home. It was like sucking on a fresh, ripe orange. They need to bottle that and sell it, because it was some of the best OJ I've had in a long time. The biscuits and gravy... I liked it. It didn't reinvent the wheel. Big biscuits, hearty gravy. I've had better, but I've certainly had worse. These were pretty solid entrants into the competition. And, as to be expected, it wrecked my entire morning, which is the appropriate reaction for a biscuits and gravy breakfast. I really want to give this place 4.5 stars but Yelp won't allow it. The most important thing is that while I can't give it five stars, it impressed me enough to want to come back. Lunch today at Bluebird Kitchen was lovely. Real scratch made food!!! And absolutely delicious!!! Ordered a Pain Bagnat; yellowfin tuna with olive tapenade, tomatoes, endive on a baguette and the Croque Monsieur; ham, emmentaler, bechamel on brioche. The staff was friendly and my food came out quickly. Several salad options in their grab and go cooler and pastry items if you are looking for a treat with your coffee. There are a couple of window counter seats if you would like to eat in this adorable blue and white restaurant. However, I decided to eat my lunch at the revamped Market Square just a very short walk away. read more

Daily soups are amazing - deep flavors and chock full of yummy stuff. The homemade biscuits are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the roast beef featured freshly carved beef with onion and horseradish on a nice ciabatta bun. Really tasty food. read more

Bluebird Kitchen is a nice little breakfast / lunch spot on Forbes just down from Market Square. Breakfast, soups, sandwiches, smoothies, pastries etc are what you'll find here. This visit, I got the stone'ground grits with bacon and eggs. The size of the container may not look like a lot, but this will fill you up. The grits were smooth and creamy, with a nice cheese flavor to them. The egg was fried perfectly, and chunks of broken bacon you'll find hiding in the grits. The café au lait was nice too (made with Counter Culture coffee out of Durham, NC). Service has been fine whenever I've come here. Cuban Sandwich here was not as you might expect but flavorwise is very delicious. The bread is fresh and maybe not what you traditionally expect either. The flavors are more "tangy" in my mind than the traditional Cuban but it's quite delicious. Speaking of breaking from tradition. I don't like Potato Salad. Never have. Like ever. BUT I saw their Potato Salad and the list of ingredients and convinced myself, now is the right time to give it another shot. And have to say, VERY good. Very very tasty. Pleasant surprise. I haven't been to Bluebird Kitchen in a long time! I had a meeting downtown so this was a convenient lunch spot. I love that they have so many vegetarian options. I was deciding between the veggie sandwich, soup, or tuna nicoise salad. I decided to order the salad, which I learned was premade in the cooler. It was okay, and I loved the assortment of olives. It wasn't great though, and the serving size was small compared to other lunch places that offer similar salads. The dressing options were a champagne or red wine vinaigrette. I was glad that they had a few seats inside so I could eat it there. As soon as it hit 12:30, the lunch rush filed in. I recommend going early! 11:45 am seemed to be the perfect time for no line. I will definitely eat there again soon and plan to try the veggie sandwich of the month! read more

This is just about the cutest little restaurant around. The menu is tightly edited, with a great selection of baked goods and hot dishes. It is a little tough to read through the menu before it's your time to order and it's helpful just to ask what types of baked good are available - you can see things but there aren't signs to tell you what's what. My blackberry muffin was incredible tender, studded with big whole blackberries that somehow didn't make the muffin gloppy. I was shocked at the $2.50 price tag - super affordable for this type of freshly baked good. I only regret I had one morning free to eat here! Order at the counter, then find a place to sit. Bluebird Kitchen is my go to spot when I want to grab a quick breakfast downtown before work. Their breakfast sandwiches are great but my go to is their sweet potato-corned beef hash. It's the perfect balance of sweet and savory. However, the last time I ordered this dish it was very greasy. I normally order just a regular coffee and it's pretty good; they serve Counter Culture Coffee. The staff is normally wonderful! They're friendly and very helpful. I normally get my order to go. This cafe is definitely on the small size. There's no tables, just one long counter against one wall and another against the window both with bar stools. Amazing sandwiches and sides! My company catered from Bluebird for our weekly lunch, and everyone unanimously agreed it was delicious. I got a bit of everything: the chicken salad sandwich, Cuban sandwich, baby romaine salad, and roasted broccoli-quinoa side with an oatmeal cookie for dessert. My favorite was definitely the chicken salad sandwich! It's studded with cashews and green apples, which works super well with the creamy chicken. Loved the roasted broccoli as well -- very umami (almost miso-y?), and the cashews add a nice crunch. Definitely planning on eating here again! read more

This is an easy one to miss since it's tucked into a small street just a little ways from the Market Square, but it's worth visiting when you find it! It's definitely pricier than your average breakfast/lunch place, but they make most if not all of their dishes from scratch, so I think it's worth the few extra dollars for a sandwich. They have a rotating array of vegetarian sandwiches and desserts, which makes for a fun surprise each time you walk in. There's even a small space to sit down to enjoy your meal around the perimeter of the restaurant. It isn't huge, so it's not ideal for large groups, but even then, it's easy to get food for takeout, so you can bring your treats anywhere you'd like! Finally! This review is LONG overdue - during the last year or so working downtown has given me multiple chances to eat at the beloved Bluebird Kitchen. I've come here for made-to-order breakfasts and lunches alike, and nothing has disappointed. Their enormous breakfast sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies leave me feeling full and satisfied, moreso than other places with similar breakfast options; the potato, sausage, egg and goat cheese laden frittata sandwich is a definite favorite. And their lunches are also a wonderful and tasty option should I forget to bring something to work that day. Their roast beef and Cuban sandwiches have been my favorites so far. If you're the type who likes seasonal items, Bluebird offers monthly smoothies and sandwiches as an addition to the standard menu. I tried their special vegetarian sandwich from last summer (with fried green tomato, grapefruit & cabbage coleslaw) - I admittedly remember that sandwich being on the bitter side, more so than I expected as someone who likes both green tomatoes and grapefruit. It wasn't bad though, and it was certainly a unique flavor profile compared to what I typically find for a quicker downtown lunchtime option. It's definitely safe to say that this place has knocked it out of the park and made my taste buds very happy time and time again. And that's just considering their main meals - the amazing desserts elevate your meal options to an entirely different level. They're good. They're really good. You should go buy one of them in addition to a sandwich. And oh: this review is based on my limited perusing of the menu - I have yet to try their biscuits, granola, quiche, bread pudding, and salads. I'm not often downtown during the weekday but now and then I get that opportunity. Bluebird kitchen is a small take out cafe where everything is made from scratch. They serve breakfast and lunch and close at 3 weekdays only. Breakfast is served until 10:30 with lunch service starting at 11. If you prefer to eat in then there is a long bar overlooking the outside window and another off to the side. Portion sizes are very generous and you do get more bang for your buck here. Everything is made in house here. Since the day of my visit was frigid cold I wanted to order one of their three soups they make daily. The potato leek soup looked inviting and it comes in two sizes. It also comes with a fresh cooked roll. I was going to order a sandwich to go with it but after learning they were big I decided to stick with a side of Brussel Sprouts, squash, red pepper and white bean medley. Some of their food is marked vegan and gluten free options are also available. The entire menu is on separate chalkboards along with a listing for coffees, teas and Sam Pelligrino. They also have a grab and go fridge just below the check out area for things such as salads, cold bevvies and other things that need refrigerated. The staff is very helpful. You order on one side and they will bag up your items in cardboard when you are ready to check out. After paying I sat down and believe me that soup was so soothing and good that I felt a lot warmer already. You can also tell it was homemade by the way it tasted. The Brussel sprout medley was also very good but very filling!!! I was so tempted to get a dessert especially when I was eyeing those double decker macaroons but I was already too stuffed. You have a great selection from consisting of anything from parfaits, cookies, breakfast pastries, and double decked goodies. Bluebird kitchen has a 2nd location at 11 Stanwix St not too far from here by Keybank. They also do catering. Information is available online or in the shop. This is a great spot for the working class and you can get a descent meal for a good price. This was my second visit and each time I feel like I've found a hidden gem. If you're downtown for breakfast, lunch or looking for a coffee break, Bluebird is a must visit. They recently hired a new pastry chef and you can tell. I arrived around 8 and the case was filled with everything you can imagine - muffins, scones, cupcakes, quiche. I started my day with the Chocolate Chip Espresso Scone and an Early Grey tea... both we're perfect. Then by lunch time the pastry case filled with an entirely new assortment + a variety of cold salads. They have a hot menu for both breakfast and lunch as well as pre-made salad options if you're on the run. The wait for food orders didn't seem to take long. They have plenty of stool seating around the perimeter of the room. If you're lucky on a sunny day you can sit right in front of the large windows facing into market square. I have to note they also sell pastries from the previous day at 1/2 off! Prices are super reasonable, but I love a place who doesn't let food go to waste. read more

Clean inside and the staff is nice. Their website advertises cold sandwiches for $9, so I was surprised to find out they are actually $12 when I arrived for lunch. The turkey sandwich is very basic and they either left out the Gouda cheese or only included a trivial amount, and not that much jam or avocado spread. The veggie sandwich was mostly bread -- not much filling. If you're thinking of going here for lunch, just go to the Boulevard Deli instead and get a better sandwich for like $8. read more

Semi- regular patron, I only go there for the biscuits and gravy. My problem is with consistency. Good biscuits but the gravy is hit or miss. I don't think they use a recipe everyday. Presentation is sometimes in a big box with lots of gravy or in a little box with barely any gravy. (Always 2 biscuits) depending on who is working the amount of gravy varies as well the quality. I have had the best and the worst biscuits and gravy here but I am always paying $7.49 for a dish comprised primarily of flour and butter. Which isn't worth it most of the time... but when it's good it's damn good. This has been my experience the past couple years, good enough (sometimes) to go back but the price and inconsistency are the reason for 2 stars. read more

Meh. I had actually tried this place back when I was in college at PPU (around when they opened in 2012) and I was pretty unimpressed then. This time was no different. There were two people working behind the counter, one was very friendly and I left a tip in the jar for them, and the other one pretty much refused to acknowledge my existence which was weird. The sandwich I had took forever to come out (around 12 minutes) and it was literally heaps of turkey with very little avocado and bacon jam, as it was advertised having. No really, both had a very thin layer. The bread was exceptional, however. Not a very well balanced sandwich and I can't see why it took so long to come out, since they were not that busy. Vibe is super weird overall, and not friendly. I was confused at how to order and was left wondering if I had made a mistake somehow. Employees were on their phones, visibly, at the front counter. No way what a sham of a place. It's one of those hipster aesthetic "cafes" that are overpriced and super slow. The menu is very narrow - and if you have dietary restrictions you're probably down to 1 or 2 sandwich options. They only have 2 hot sandwiches too. It was 10$ for one sandwich and it doesn't come with any sides or anything. Particularly displeased by the staff. There were 5 people behind the counter who seemed to be very young - probably in their teens or twenties. I'm in my twenties myself, but they were so unprofessional. The gentleman who served me didn't know anything about the menu. It seemed like they didn't have a dress code and I found that they were on their phones or meandering and sitting at the tables for most of the time I was there. There were two women were great and seemed to be calling he shots. But truly, that's all you needed. Why do you need so many bodies behind the counter? Especially if they're doing nothing and just chatting? My sandwich also took forever to get to me. For some reason they decided that they needed to distribute the 3 people before me and after me all at the same time. Instead of as they were done. So strange. Also a car alarm went off outside for a couple minutes and it seemed like the world was ending for the staff. "Omg does someone not care at all about their car" and "wow this is SO annoying" was all I heard. They were more whiny and annoying than the car themselves! Hard pass on this place. The only downside is their selection is pretty small and since everything is pre-made you can't omit or add anything. Their house made potato chips are some of the best chips I've had. They do have an awesome selection of desserts. If you're not already downtown I wouldn't go out of my way to stop here. Parking downtown is too much of a pain. read more

Stopped in here on a whim with my dad for a quick bite to eat before he left town. The menu is great for breakfast and lunch! The oatmeal look super great, as did all the pastries (which I'm gonna have to go back for later!) I stuck with their baby romaine salad - truthfully, I thought it would be rather dull but I just needed something quick and healthy. It ended up being absolutely amazing and so filling! Feta, cucumber, almonds, dates, lemon zest and a champagne vinaigrette. SO good! My dad had a spinach chicken soup which he loved, as well as the house roasted chicken salad. Both of us left there happy - this is probably from a combination of the great coffee they have as well as great food choices! Not to mention - a very friendly staff.
