I love stopping into Corner Mercantile to grab a quick lunch when I'm at work. I probably should have reviewed this place 100 visits ago, but better late than never! My go to lunch is usually salmon (prepared different every week which I love!) and a side, but I changed it up and went with a pepperoni pizza flatbread and a side caprese salad. This spot is run by Parkhurst, the same folks as Eat N' Park. They have a display counter full of quick entrees, sandwiches and sides that you self-order at a kiosk and they will heat up for you to eat there or take back to work. There is a lot of seating if you've come with a group; I work in the building and this is a frequent spot for impromptu meetings. There's also a very good coffee bar (pro tip: if you work in the Tower at PNC Plaza or nearby, get a latte punch card) and grab and go options like salads. As a vegetarian I appreciate that I can find several suitable options for myself here 100% of the time. Some of my frequent go-tos here are quiches and individual pizzas/flatbreads. Also don't miss the smoked gouda pasta salad or the kale salad as excellent side choices. Ingredients are high-quality, fresh and local, and a typical lunch will run you $10-12, pretty typical for central downtown Pittsburgh. Coffee prices are a shade under what you'll pay at the chains and far better quality. Awesome place to sit down and work or chat. The dining area is spacious with plenty of place to sit, including bars along the sides and in front of the windows. And it's all clean, so you don't have to worry about sitting in someone else's crumbs! I love having the option of choosing something myself like their prepackaged salads or something they whip up on the spot like a drink or a hot pizza. The staff is friendly and helpful, which goes a long way when you're a newcomer like me! And, of course, there's the food! Tasty for sure. And the price isn't as bad as I was expecting when I first walked in. They try to use sources that are as local as possible, so I'm all for that. I have stopped in a couple of times for lunch since I work downtown. Both times I ordered the Italian hoagie aka the Bloomfield. Of course since I live in Bloomfield (Little Italy) I had to try it. My favorite by far was the Bloomfielder sandwich which is an Italian sub with marinated veggies a pesto mayo... omg so good! I would really love to try out their breakfast items! If you're looking to switch up your meal options during your day downtown, Corner Mercantile is definitely a potential place to visit. You can grab breakfast, lunch or dinner here (note that they close at 6:00 so it's not a late dinner spot) and they use a lot of local ingredients in their cafe options, which goes a long way in boosting the taste of their meals. You have a couple of options for food here. One is more or less styling your own meal at the cafe/deli. Another is ordering their special entrées and sandwiches of the day. And finally there's the bakery and coffee options, which are sold at a separate counter than the main courses. I typically go for their daily specials when I visit. Most notably I've ordered a rotisserie special with pork, pineapple and cilantro. The addition of peppers and cilantro helped to balance out the meat and fruit, both of which were quite sweet. The result was a tender sandwich with the right blend of tender and crunchy ingredients. It ended up being more memorable than a prime rib special, which was supposed to come with a few toppings but was mostly prime rib and salt. The prime rib was delicious, but I wish there had been some other toppings for extra flavor on that one. While I'm usually here for lunch I've also stopped by in the morning and can safely say that the baked goods here are a great way to start your day. And since Corner Mercantile works with so many local ingredients, it has a very seasonal menu that changes on a regular basis. What a gem to find in Downtown Pittsburgh! I was expecting a sit-down restaurant prior to entering the store however, was pleasantly surprised by the set up of the store. I went during lunchtime and they had prepared sandwiches and other prepared dishes at the counter. I went for the Bloomfield sandwich and got a pumpkin scone. They offered to heat the sandwich up for me as I went to another counter to pay for my food. The sandwich was packed with meat and the cheese was nicely melted from being heat up and was good. The scone was also decent (I was never the biggest scone fan). We got our food and drink and sat down at one of the tables while enjoying the decor. You can get a small container for just $1.50 and it is a generous portion! Clearly good ingredients and freshly made. Let's just say the equivalent product would be $4-5 at a place like Whole Foods. Sandwiches are solid but not special. I got the Bloomfield, which many other reviews have recommended. I enjoyed it but have had similar sandwiches. They do toast it for you after ordering and at $7-8 they are not too pricey. They also have other entree style dishes like marinated tofu slices and salmon steaks. Went in on 3/11/2020 to get a matcha latte at 9 am. Service was great, the product was good. Everything here tasted pretty good! Yummy food and drinks. But what really made my experience completely dissatisfactory was the amount of foam in my latte... I understand lattes have foam. The problem is when the latte consists of half foam, half drink. There was at least 2 whole inches or more of foam in my SIZE SMALL matcha latte... my coworker also experienced the same thing. If I had asked for no foam, would they hand me a half empty cup? Coming off of a recent event here I wanted to savor the atmosphere and food they serve on my own. They do use local sourced ingredients here and they believe in re composting. This place also is part of the 412 food rescue which is designed for reducing food waste. I made an on the phone order for the vegan sweet potato and black bean chili to take home with me and they had it ready upon arrival. They also do catering. Everything here is made from scratch and you can see the daily menu change on their website. While here I thought I would try some of the other foods I didn't get to try at my event. This week on the hot foods menu AKA home style foods in the glass they were featuring two different kinds of quiches. Tempting but I opted for another cup of the vegan chili, the vegan blt sandwich and a side of cauliflower chips. The coffee as I noted before is supplied by the Coffee tree roasters as well as chai tea. Breakfast is also served here all at reasonable prices. They have 3 different types of sandwiches with Bloomfield (Italian hoagie) sandwich being the most popular. I should note that gluten free items are available as well. When you place your order or get it to go they have check out areas where you can pay by cash or credit card. They have long tables if you have the time to eat in. Having already enjoyed their hot foods with their sides I went ahead and dug into my chili. It was indeed very filling and very good! Same was true with the sandwich. I was tempted to get a dessert but declined since I had enough and wanted to enjoy my takeout order. When I got home to freeze my 2nd vegan chili I noted on the label "may contain 1 or more of the following allergens". Among these allergens I saw milk and eggs. So much for giving this container to my vegan relative. I was really hoping that I misread it but when I looked over the takeout menu the letter v stands for vegan. Still I enjoyed it and will probably eat the other one at a later date. Just a word of caution for those who truly are vegan and don't want their food to be compromised. They are only open during weekdays-so if you work or find yourself in the city during the week this is a great place to stop over and get a hearty lunch at a reasonable price. Due to an event hosted by Corner Mercantile, I have tried many of their sides and 3 different types of sandwiches. I can easily say that this stop is fresh and healthy - amazing for a quick lunch during the work day. They also accommodate vegan diets and food allergies really well. Of the picture items, there was not one side I would advise against, however, I would strongly recommend the sweet potatoes to anybody. I was also blown away by the juiciness of the chicken and powerful flavor in the salmon as well. I have been back since that event and was able to try a vegan sweet potato black been burrito which was delicious but a little steep in price for its size. Overall though, Corner Mercantile is a gem in Pittsburgh. Their menu is always rotating, so returning customers can always find something new to sink their teeth into! Corner Mercantile is a great market place with a lot of variety. It's the place to go downtown if you want to grab something quick for breakfast or lunch, but still made well with local ingredients. Located right in the middle of downtown off from Market Square, this spot features a variety of delicious, handmade sandwiches, entrees, soups, salads, sides, and coffee (hot and cold brew) that rotate daily. They have a delicious bourbon cold brew that's like nothing I've ever had before. The space is organized well so you won't wait longer than a couple minutes to get your food and be on your way. I recently got to meet the chef and staff at a Yelp Elite event, they were so passionate and friendly. Once you try the Corner Mercantile, it will be a strong contender to be my new go-to lunch spot downtown. Was able to attend the Corner Mercantile for an Yelp Elite Event and it was amazing. We were greeted by the very welcoming and friendly staff upon arrival and shown to the seating area where we were told we could try some of the drinks that they made in-house. Two of which contained alcohol. There were 3 choices, they were all very good but my favorite was the Apple Cider with Fireball. They also had these very beautiful little cups on the table with a sampling of their Edamame Hummus with carrots, it was delicious. I bought some upon leaving. The Chef and staff told us all about the business and that they source most of the ingredients locally and at the end of the week they donate leftover food to a charity. We were able to sample many items, see my photos. The flavors were out of this world, so bright, fresh, and pleasing to the palate. It's really hard for me to select favorites as they were all so delicious. I was able to try from the side dishes the Butternut Squash, The Smoked Gouda Pasta Salad, and the Chickpea Salad. From the Main Courses I tried the Maple Mustard Chicken Breast and the Orange Fennel Salmon and from the Sandwiches I tried the Vegetarian, the Prime Rib and the Bloomfielder. Like I said, all were delicious. I can't wait to go back! We were also given options to sample Chai Tea, Cold Brew, and the Barrel Aged Cold Brew. I tried both the cold and barrel aged coffee's and they were really great. They also provided the in-house syrups to sweeten the beverages and they were also very good. Hot coffees from available to try as well. They also provided some desserts that were delicious. There was various pound cakes, a vegan chocolate cake and a mini carrot cake. They also have a cold case that you can purchase items on the run. Dropped in on a weekday early afternoon to get a taste of their wide variety of sandwiches which seems to change on a daily or weekly basis. I love the open, clean interior and fairly ample seating. Staff was incredibly friendly and provided well-presented, delicious sandwiches. Vegan sandwich: shitake mushroom, butternut squash, arugula, caramelized onions, TLC make this sandwich absolutely amazing! The butternut squash was spread on each side of the baguette bread and provided a rich, creamy and savory kind of sauce. Caramelized onions were savory sweet, adding a nice balance to the more umami flavors of the shitake mushroom. Lastly, arugula added a refreshing touch to the overall well-balanced sandwich. Prime rib sandwich: The epitome of simplicity - bread and prime rib, which was cooked until tender. Although this was not a dry sandwich by any means (and the prime rib was again very tender), I could not help but think about something textural to add to the sandwich, perhaps something like an au jus, to really enhance the savory, meaty flavor of the prime rib. Edamame hummus: This is probably my favorite and comes in the to-go salad packages. The edamame is blended until smooth, with a chunk here and there. It really reminded me of a much more savory spin of guacamole without the heaviness or richness that comes with avocado. I truly wish they could sell just this!! I went here last Friday with some work buddies. The location and general layout of the restaurant is fantastic. When you walk in, you have the option of prepared food on your left and the ability to order a sandwich on your right. There is a section along the wall to select from daily soup, salad, and sushi selections. I ordered the vegan and gluten free Coconut Curry Carrot soup that was delicious. So much so, I bought another quart for dinner. I also ordered the Bloomfield sandwich which was loaded with delicious meats and pesto. I ate the sandwich for dinner and was not disappointed. I knocked 2 stars off this review primarily because there were FLIES EVERYWHERE during the 1 hour I sat at the table with my friends. There were so many flies that myself and other people were constantly swatting them away. The food was delicious but the flies ruined my experience. In my mind, flies indicate that the back of the house is dirty, trash is sitting around, or some of the fruit available for purchase has spoiled. The flavors of the sandwich worked really well too. Their turkey artichoke spinach sandwich is elevated to the next level once it's toasted, I just wish you could taste the artichoke spinach spread a bit more on this one. I'll definitely be back at least once a week to try the rest of their sandwiches and their entrees. They have a daily sandwich special which was a lamb sandwich on ciabatta with greens for $8.99. I would definitely order it again and look forward to trying some of their other daily specials! They sliced the lamb and made the sandwich to order. They had a few other sandwiches to choose from, one was all veggie, one was chicken pesto and there were a few others. With my sandwich I went for a side of mac and cheese which they have in a warming area by the check-out. I wasn't blown away by the mac & cheese for the price, but it was ok. There are pre-packed soups, hummus packs and salads in that area as well. Next to the sandwich station, there is prepared food that you can mix and match to make a meal. Lasagna, chicken breasts, risotto cakes, veggies, and plenty of other options. I didn't try any of those but I plan on doing that soon. My friend got veggie lasagna with 2 sides and it was only $6.99! My only complaint is that it is sort of hard to navigate with a crowd. This can be dangerous with a downtown lunch rush! There isn't a clear area for a line to form, so people were just sort of standing around confused and waiting to order. It would be helpful to have some of those retractable waiting line barriers to organize the crowd a little better. The store is located in the new PNC tower and is a little bit reminiscent of some of the corporate cafeterias (run by Eat n' Park group) but with a bit more style. A deli case featuring many prepared food options, a small bakery or desserts area, and a case featuring ready-to-go sandwiches, desserts, snacks, sushi and soups. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the selection and choices. It looks like a solid option for a quick lunch when you're downtown. I am lucky enough to work close by to The Corner Merc and I stop by here a lot. One thing I dislike is having to pay for your order before they will start cooking your breakfast sandwich.
