While visiting Pittsburgh we had breakfast at Pamela's on Forbes in the Oakland area. It's a small casual diner near Pitt. I ordered an omelette, my wife ordered a "morning after" breakfast. Both of our dishes were fantastic! There was enough food to feed 4 people. The hotcakes alone were a meal. My wife's dish came with 2 hotcakes, eggs and bacon. My omelette came with a large serving of hash browns and toast. I ordered turkey sausage on the side. The orders came out before I could add cream to my coffee! Another great thing was the prices! I was so pleasantly surprised by Pamela's diner. It came up in a number of searches of places to have breakfast in Pittsburgh, and when we arrived, there was a very long line waiting outside. This told me either the food is actually that good, or it is kind of a tourist destination, and I wasn't sure which one would be accurate. The line actually moved really quickly; we were told it could be 35 to 45 minutes, and I think we really only waited about 15. Once we entered, we saw that the space is fun and kitschy. It has old school diner, decor, made more authentic by the fact that the photos on the wall seem to be of the owner and family members throughout the 1950s and similar eras. There are a lot of tables, some of which are small, and are the old school diner style. Servers were friendly and efficient. We ordered some of their specialties, including the specialty crêpe hot cakes filled with strawberries, and the Pittsburgh hash. These were both so delicious. The hot cakes were thin in the best way possible; not too doughy or filling, for the perfect texture. The hash was so flavorful with all of its ingredients, including kielbasa and sauerkraut. Honestly, the food was so much better than I expected from a breakfast diner, so now I know why that line was so long to get in! We chose this from recommendations on the internet. I thought it had potential the vibe is nice. Our server was nice. The coffee was a bit strong. The food was not nice. I ordered a basic breakfast: two eggs scrambled, bacon, hash browns and rye toast. Everything was pre-made! Nothing fresh here steam table deluxe! Even the toast was cold. The eggs were overcooked the bacon was burnt the hash browns I don't even know what they were! Gross! My dining partner had the raved about crepe style pancakes nothing to rave about! Unfortunately this location can't compare to the strip district. We didn't have a wait and the food came out rather quickly. Our waitress was nice and attentive. While everything came out hot, the cooking wasn't up to par. The pancakes weren't completely cooked toward the middle and definitely could have been on longer. The other side wasn't golden brown. The potatoes were the same and tasted different getting them with corned beef hash vs on the side. Finally the eggs were a tad runny for scrambled. Cute diner with good service. Parking isn't the greatest but we were able to find a spot in the side parking lot. I ordered the Tex-Mex Omelette because it said it was a favorite on the menu. I was disappointed with it. It was lacking flavor and seemed like a bland jarred salsa was used with the chorizo inside. The potatoes were pretty good but the toast was dry and burnt in places. Stopped in yesterday for a quick breakfast. I have been to the original store in Millvale and was blown away by the experience. Sadly the Mt. Lebanon location fell a little short. The ambience is great. The service was adequate. The food was a disappointment. I am a self professed corned beef hash maven. At Millvale it was superb. This is a neighbourhood grub hub, that was recommended by so many people when we asked around, so we thought we'd try it out. The diner itself is super cute with pink and blue seats, pictures all over their walls, and I don't know if it's celebrities or patrons, but I thought it was a nice touch. The place is really clean, and warm. Our waitress was very pleasant, and we were very fortunate to have her help us with the menu, and answer other questions about the strip. The stars given on today's review was for both the service and the atmosphere of this place. The food is something I wasn't very impressed with. I ordered the meat and eggs, where you have a choice of toast, and meats to accompany your eggs and hash. Which I would have expected to be quite standard. However, I asked for crispy potatoes and really well don't bacon, of which I enjoyed the bacon, but the potatoes really taste more like potato salad then a hash, so if your into that it's the dish for you. It was crispy on the outside and quite salad-y on the inside, and I really dislike potato salad, but it seems to be something the locals really enjoy. Toast was under toasted. I also ordered the famous pancakes, and once I bit into it, I found them to be more of a flat, chewie pancake, and not flavourful at all. I was at least expecting some vanilla, but I got noffin. I smothered it with syrup and butter, but it just didn't do it for me. My dining partner really didn't have much to say about the sandwich either. I honestly don't see what the hype was about this place, but so many people were buzzing about it, so we had to try it, the food was mediocre at best. But the atmosphere and staff are both very nice, and made this experience a little more enjoyable. read more

The pancakes are so good. They are thin and buttery crisp. They are the size of the plate and there are three in the stack. Sausage was also delicious. My husband had the eggs, bacon and potatoes. He really enjoyed the potatoes. Service was very good. Place is not too large but cute. read more

I lived in Pittsburgh for so many years and have come back to visit so many times. I don't know how I've only been here twice. This is an absolute staple and a must when you're in the area. My husband and I split the chorizo hash and the strawberry hotcakes. Both of these were delicious, but the hotcakes took the cake. I'm someone who usually looks to get some sort of protein in their breakfast, but when you're here it's definitely warranted to make an exception to the rule. Get the hotcakes!! We were silly and tried getting a table at prime time on a Saturday morning. The wait wasn't as bad as I would've thought though. We came on a rather busy weekend date, but got seated pretty much right away. The service was super quick and we had zero problems. We ordered a bunch of stuff to split: Ham and bacon were good! Service is wonderful. The waiters are incredibly attentive and quick. Diner environment so great for a work meeting or laid back breakfast or brunch. I was in Pittsburgh for work and ate here twice. The first day was fantastic, had the special that comes with eggs, meat, and their version of pancakes. Highly recommend!!! The second day I had an omelette that was terrible. The bacon inside was fatty and the veggies were not chopped small. Hard to enjoy barely cooked chunks of green pepper and huge slices of mushroom. The toast was also too well done and the potatoes needed to be crispier. So I'd definitely go back for my first order (in pics) and the reason for 4 stars but not the omelette plate. read more

Couldn't have asked for much more during my visit to Pamela's last week - it was a busy Sunday brunch time with a crowd huddled around the front entrance but we were seated in about 10 minutes. It was very crowded and a bit hectic, we were towards the entrance so there was a lot of hustle and bustle and noise but that is to be expected considering the time we went, yet the waitress was attentive and made great suggestions, and the food came relatively quick. I've been to Pamela's twice recently and both times I've had great food and great service. Every time I've went there or even went past, the place was packed and bustling with activity. The last time I went past, the line extended out to the sidewalk. I couldn't even get near the door. My breakfast there both times were more than I could finish and had to ask for containers to take some home both times. No matter how busy they are, the servers find their way back to the table to check on you, refill the coffee and water. The service is the best. I can't say enough about the pancakes or the Lyonnaise potatoes. Both are just great. The pancakes are large and crispy outside, soft and full of flavor inside. Both times, I got the Morning After Breakfast Special, with 2 eggs, sausage & their crepe-style hotcakes. I added toast for my over easy eggs. The prices were reasonable, but I thought a bit high for a side of potatoes for over $4. Still, the food was good, the service prompt and friendly and the atmosphere busy and active. We had a wonderful Sunday breakfast at Pamela's on Sunday. We got there around 10:30, and our wait was only about 10-15 minutes. Everyone at the table got a little bit of a different breakfast. Everyone really liked what they got too. I had the short stake of pancakes, totally enough, with bacon...pancakes come with a side of breakfast meat. I also split a side of potatoes with my husband. I am not sure if the potatoes or the pancakes were better...both were wonderful, delicious, and oh so memorable! Stopped by for lunch with a group of friends. It was not too busy and we were seated immediately. The crepe style pancakes are what they are know for so I decided to try the Blueberry Hotcakes that are stuffed with blueberries, sour cream and brown sugar with some whipped cream. This restaurant is one of Pittsburgh staple. The ambiance is nice there was a mural, brightly colored. It's not too small and not too big. The waitress was very nice, now I've been there in the past and hand one of their pancakes or crepe cake. My friend actually ordered the crepe cake it was buttery and light and fluffy. It was as big as the plate but it wasn't heavy like some pancakes. I had corn beef hash with eggs over easy. The hash was not salty, everything was made fresh. The food is filling and inexpensive, I do recommend if it's the weekend you may have a little wait. Since I haven't had a change to experience other items on the menu I have them a 4 star. I was told by several people that this was THE place to go to for breakfast. I mean, as far as breakfasts go, it was OK. I think the hype is a little too much for what you get and what they have. They're known for crepe pancakes, which are good. It's an interesting and new concept to me to have crispy edges but they're pancakes but like crepes. But honestly? It was just like regular diner food that isn't anything so earth shattering I needed to write home about. I got an order of Gails Favorite Eggs: Scrambled eggs with top dollops of cream cheese and scallions, with choice of side (I ordered the Lyonnaise potatoes which were good) and some buttered toast. My husband ordered an omelette and said it was fine because you can't really mess up a diner omelette. We split an order of their strawberry pancakes, which again, are like crepes. They were good, but I mean, again: nothing super earth shattering. Overall, the food was fine. First time at the Mt. Lebanon location, but I've been to all the others. The food was fantastic- the strawberry crepe pancakes have been my favorite for decades and I never get tired of them. The service was really fast and efficient as well! The restaurant was clean with a fun decor.
