Specialty crepe hotcakes with strawberries
Meg H.

I was so pleasantly surprised by Pamela's diner. It came up in a number of searches of places to have breakfast in Pittsburgh, and when we arrived, there was a very long line waiting outside. This told me either the food is actually that good, or it is kind of a tourist destination, and I wasn't sure which one would be accurate. The line actually moved really quickly; we were told it could be 35 to 45 minutes, and I think we really only waited about 15. Once we entered, we saw that the space is fun and kitschy. It has old school diner, decor, made more authentic by the fact that the photos on the wall seem to be of the owner and family members throughout the 1950s and similar eras. There are a lot of tables, some of which are small, and are the old school diner style. Servers were friendly and efficient. We ordered some of their specialties, including the specialty crêpe hot cakes filled with strawberries, and the Pittsburgh hash. These were both so delicious. The hot cakes were thin in the best way possible; not too doughy or filling, for the perfect texture. The hash was so flavorful with all of its ingredients, including kielbasa and sauerkraut. Honestly, the food was so much better than I expected from a breakfast diner, so now I know why that line was so long to get in! If you're in the Strip District looking for breakfast, don't skip Pamela's.

Unfortunately this location can't compare to the strip district. We didn't have a wait and the food came out rather quickly. Our waitress was nice and attentive. While everything came out hot, the cooking wasn't up to par. The pancakes weren't completely cooked toward the middle and definitely could have been on longer. The other side wasn't golden brown. The potatoes were the same and tasted different getting them with corned beef hash vs on the side. Finally the eggs were a tad runny for scrambled. We've decided to just go to the other location from now on.

What more is there to be said about Pamela's? One of Pittsburgh's most iconic breakfast spots that truly never disappoints. The hotcakes are just divine. Food comes out hot and fast and at a price point that won't break the bank in case you want to go there every day like I would. Definitely a cult classic for a reason. Love bringing out of town friends here!!

Tex-Mex Omelette

Cute diner with good service. Parking isn't the greatest but we were able to find a spot in the side parking lot. I ordered the Tex-Mex Omelette because it said it was a favorite on the menu. I was disappointed with it. It was lacking flavor and seemed like a bland jarred salsa was used with the chorizo inside. The potatoes were pretty good but the toast was dry and burnt in places. This place had good reviews and has been around forever so I was excited to try it but found it to be lackluster.

This is a neighbourhood grub hub, that was recommended by so many people when we asked around, so we thought we'd try it out. The diner itself is super cute with pink and blue seats, pictures all over their walls, and I don't know if it's celebrities or patrons, but I thought it was a nice touch. The place is really clean, and warm. Our waitress was very pleasant, and we were very fortunate to have her help us with the menu, and answer other questions about the strip. The stars given on today's review was for both the service and the atmosphere of this place. The food is something I wasn't very impressed with. I ordered the meat and eggs, where you have a choice of toast, and meats to accompany your eggs and hash. Which I would have expected to be quite standard. However, I asked for crispy potatoes and really well don't bacon, of which I enjoyed the bacon, but the potatoes really taste more like potato salad then a hash, so if your into that it's the dish for you. It was crispy on the outside and quite salad-y on the inside, and I really dislike potato salad, but it seems to be something the locals really enjoy. Toast was under toasted. I also ordered the famous pancakes, and once I bit into it, I found them to be more of a flat, chewie pancake, and not flavourful at all. I was at least expecting some vanilla, but I got noffin. I smothered it with syrup and butter, but it just didn't do it for me. My dining partner really didn't have much to say about the sandwich either. I honestly don't see what the hype was about this place, but so many people were buzzing about it, so we had to try it, the food was mediocre at best. But the atmosphere and staff are both very nice, and made this experience a little more enjoyable.

So, so good. Crepe pancakes and bacon. Also had the hash. The best food I had when I was visiting Pitt.

We had a weekday morning breakfast closer to noon. We did not have to wait. I had the Blueberry Hotcakes which were excellent. The pancakes are thin with a crisp to the edges. I liked the whole thing was not overly sweet, but that could be because the blueberries were on the tart side. For me the portion size was good. Cute diner atmosphere. Service was friendly. Our food came out quickly. Prices were standard for this type of food.

Good breakfast, but the coffee is lousy. The pancakes are good. The omelets are good, but the bad coffee makes this place only OK.

When it's lunchtime, it's always one of the hot sandwiches from my childhood....hot turkey, beef, or meatloaf on bread, usually with fries and gravy over everything. The thing I always liked was that the turkey was always real.....as in real sliced turkey. I was there last week for a late lunch, early dinner and I saw that one of the specials was a turkey dinner. That was all I had to see. I chose a salad as my side. That was my first big mistake. When I told my friends, they all said. Ewwww, you should NEVER order a salad there and I found out for myself, why. The lettuce was all brown edged, looked over chilled and somewhat mushy with two sliced of cucumber. The cucumber was fresh which made the lettuce look even worse. Then came the entree. All I saw was a sea of gravy, which is fine. I started to get into the meal and went for the dressing/stuffing. It was a gray/beige color, very wet and it looked like someone put bread in water and wrang it out by squeezing their hand. The fries were fries. No problem there. Then I saw it. The turkey was round, all the same thickness and all the same shape. I crashed big time. Decades of my life were slapped in the face and I felt betrayed. When the server came to the table she asked, "Aren't you hungry?" I said, "Uhh not really." And she replied, "I understand." I'm hesitant to go back, even for breakfast and especially not for a hot turkey sandwich. If I saw round turkey on that, I don't know what I'd do! So, if you're looking for breakfast...fine. Anything else....you're on your own. Thanks for the memories, at least.

The service was quick and friendly both times, our coffee cups never stayed empty thanks to the free refills, and the food came out surprisingly fast despite how busy it was. Luckily there were only a few people ahead of us and this place doesn't really good job of keeping people on a steady flow in and out. They do require that you have all of your party ready to sit before they'll sit you down. We waited perhaps 5 minutes to get a table for four. Among us we ordered the eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, and their classic breakfast sandwich. Across the board it was all very tasty. The biscuits and gravy I think use a sweet or sausage that I'm used to, but it was still very good. One of the best things about the eggs benedict is that it didn't taste just like the sauce, which is common. Instead you got the full medley of flavors from the egg and all the fixings. We also got their classic Italian bread french toast which is so buttery by itself you really almost don't need syrup. Served by very friendly but very efficient waitresses. The only downside, which this restaurant can't really control, is that parking is a pain and is expensive. But that's just a nature of the way the Strip District has grown. We didn't have any other sandwiches but they look like they would be delicious and this would be a good place for a brunch or lunch as well.
