I have had such highs and lows here, but today was the worst and probably the final straw. Was surprised it wasn't crazy crowded on Father's Day and we chose to eat inside which turned out to be a mistake because the A/C vents are right above the booths and it was freezing. I ordered the avocado toast and it arrived quickly and looked awful. It tasted as awful as it looked. The avocados were old and bitter. I order this everywhere and there's usually some onions or tomatoes and lime juice mixed in. This was just old avocados. The server came by to check and I told her it was bad and to take it away. She never asked if I wanted something else or to try the toast again. The manager came by a little later asking if all was ok. Told him about the avocado and he was extremely interested in helping but I just didn't feel like eating anymore. They did take the toast off our check. read more

Not bad for a diner with a small bar. I had a beer while I waited for my food and another when I was eating. The waitress was polite but didn't say much. My wife and I went out for breakfast on a Monday. I was at the Central Diner once or twice before but it has been years. We arrived around 9am and the restaurant wasn't very busy so we were promptly seated. Our waitress was attentive enough. My wife had a skillet that was pretty big. I had two eggs over medium, sausage, home fries and Italian toast. My breakfast was good, I wasn't blown away but it was good. Restaurant is clean, menu is huge. Came in on a Friday around noon, and the parking lot was PACKED. The service was a bit slow; but the food was good. The fried pickles were spears, not slices. The marinara it came with was DELICIOUS. I can only give this place a 3/5. I have heard great things and wanted to give it a try for breakfast. My mother and I went around 10:30 on a Wednesday. We were greeted warmly and sat right away. Our server Sunni was quick, efficient and knew the menu well. She recommended the skillet as one of her favorites. My mother and I both ordered the Western Skillets. I was underwhelmed. It was very under cooked in my opinion. I asked for my eggs well done. They were not. The onion were close to raw and well as the hash browns. My mother's was the same way. It seems that all the ingredients are cooked ahead of time and then assembled onto our plates. I say this because our meals came out in under 10 minutes. It was also not seasoned at all. Fairly large dining room with heated patio. Our waiter was good and had a teammate take our order because he was so busy, great teamwork. Our meals came out in timely manner. The menu is extensive and states it is a scratch made kitchen. Our food was good and portions are large so we had a few leftovers to take home. The prices aren't terrible. The menu is large and overwhelming and it gives me Cheesecake factory vibes. Too many items for anything to be that good. The potatoes were very very hard and dry and the veggies in my skillet were undercooked and my ham was lunch meat slices. I have given this place a few chances am not a fan. A group of former retired co-workers meeting up for a get together. She didn't mind that we sat at her table a little longer than we probably should have. Places, a large, modern, Family restaurant with the thriving business. Prices are intermediate at Best or high for diner food. Bread is good, Services prompt. Food is typically at least average, was the glaring exception of how they prepare their breakfast meats been there twice, and each time receive bacon that could only have been warmed up in the chef's hands. It could not have hit any hotter surface for more than a few seconds. Forgive me for being particular, but I don't want to eat raw meat in the parasites that they contain. It will be a long time before I'm willing to come back to this place. There are far too many local establishments that are more reliable and just care more. I've been coming to Central Diner and Grille for years, and it's consistently excellent. The service is always friendly and attentive, and the food never disappoints. Most recently, I had the western omelet and it was delicious--perfectly cooked and full of flavor. They even loaded us up on lemons for our water, which was top notch and such a nice touch. Food is mediocre it not bad - standard diner food, but a little more expensive than other diners in the area. Biggest problem is organization and service. Very sporadic. Have come in and sat for 20 minutes when they were not busy watching tables that came in after us get serviced. Should not take 90 minutes when the place isn't busy to eat breakfast. Everyone there needs some semblance of intensity. Sluggish staff in general. And the table assignment system is completely broken. Waitresses are arguing about which tables they want openly. We drive further to go to other diners now. I still have to come here with work groups though and really wish they were better. read more

During a recent trip to Pittsburgh, my friends and I wanted to find a good local place for brunch, where we could also order cocktails. We were shocked that our local friends were struggling to suggest a restaurant. After a long Yelp search, we found Central Diner & Grille. When we arrived around 9:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, on a Steeler's home game day, the restaurant was packed. The wait went quickly and we were seated in a large, comfortable booth. We checked out the specials board before placing orders. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich while my friends ordered pancakes and a gyro omelet. My sandwich was homemade and fresh. My friends all enjoyed their food as well. Everything was scratch made and super delicious. It was all made better by our cocktails. Mine was a peach Bellini which was sweet and delicious. All of this, on top of the friendly, patient and prompt service made the experience outstanding. I will definitely return to Central Diner & Grille during future trips to Pittsburgh. read more

As a vegan, i ordered the vegan burger. It came with a tasty bun piled high with tomato slices (2) and lettuce. But the burger tasted and looked like a grilled piece of cardboard. The only downside was that the restaurant could use a little cosmetic updating. Prices are average. In the past couple of years, my husband and I have eaten at this diner at least four times. A nice alternative to the chain restaurants in a crowded area. Food (4/5): The portions are really large here. I came in on a Saturday and ordered the prime rib (served on the weekends). I ordered the steak medium which was probably a mistake. It came out made to order. They didn't list the portion size but I would say it was well over 16oz. The side salad that came with it was a good size, nothing special though. Service (3/5): My server was friendly and prompt. However, he never stopped at the table. As soon as his feet got to the table he would start to back away to make his way to another table. This is a busy place. That said, taking an additional 5 seconds to at least make eye contact would have been nice. Price (3/5): This is not a greasy spoon diner where the portions are large and the price is low. You get a lot of food here but you pay for it. The prime rib dinner was $35+ and with only one side besides a soup or salad, that's pricey. Kids meals start at $9.95 and go up from there. Good Food and good service. When I visit Pittsburgh, I always come here multiple times. They have an extensive menu. I recommend the Central Chicken Sandwich and the Greek Salad. The french fries use to be better but are still ok. I recommend substituting and getting the sweet potato fries these days. The restaurant is very lively. Came here with my sisters for a birthday celebration and was pleasantly surprised to see the parking lot packed, for starters. I just moved to the area and we were looking for a non-chain restaurant which is hard to come by in the Robinson area. Besides, I adore diners. The menu offered a large variety and our waitress was delightful and attentive. Our meals started with warm bread and salads. My sisters got shrimp dishes which they enjoyed and I got the roast beef which was a huge serving. Service was excellent. We sat on the patio on an absolutely perfect September evening drinking ridiculously delicious strawberry sangrias, courtesy of Mary Beth. Our drinks even had a lit up ice cube which made it festive.
