Downey's House provided the local spot I needed. An ice cold Yuengling on draft went down very well, and while I didn't find pierogis on the menu, I settled for a phenomenal bowl of spaghetti & meatballs. Local marinara & meatballs made with the same recipe of the old Main Hotel that was in Carnegie for nearly 100 years. That bowl of pasta was SCRUMPTIOUS and just what I was after. I even talked my lovely wife into doing up her salad 'Pittsburgh style', which means adorning the salad with fries. And yes, it's as good as it sounds. Thrown in a protein like grilled chicken and that is a banger of a meal. Great dining area with a square-shaped bar and TVs with sight-lines in any direction. I had a small salad with the homemade garlic ranch which I wish they sold in bottles! You HAVE to try any of the rolls...homemade pizza dough with all sorts of filling: spinach; chicken bacon; pepperoni I got some food to go while I ate in and they forgot the salmon on my salad. Our waitress was part of the family who owned it and her pride in their establishment was visible, it was nice to see. We had the famous pizza rolls which were truly delicious, along with all three of the sauces. The garlic ranch was VERY garlicky in a good way. We also tried the Downey burger which was freshly made, no patty puck. The fries were nice too. The Mac and cheese (Friday only) was a bit bland for my palate but my kids loved it. The only thing I really didn't like was that the chicken tenders were described as "not your kids tendies" but they were very much kid tendies- frozen, pressed chicken, unexceptional at best. The dough was so good that I would be inspired to try some regular pizza if we were back in the area again. The meatballs were also delicious, and although I would've preferred it as a sandwich, my kid decided to get it with spaghetti. The accompanying garlic toast was pleasant as well. I got a turkey club with fries. The portion sizes were very large. I could even fit my mouth around it. It was good, the turkey was good turkey. I also had the seasoned fries which I really enjoyed. The service was just ok. The waitress was nice but seemed confused. It took a very long time for us to get our food, and she forgot to bring us our bill. It was really good with shaved chicken compared to chucks of sliced chicken breast. It was seasoned well. My husband got the buffalo chicken sandwich which he said I was good but especially enjoyed the quality bun. My daughter got a pizza which she said was delicious and very cheesy. The main bread of the pizza was thinner but the crust was nice a fluffy. My other daughter got the kids grilled cheese and it was toasted to perfection and loaded with cheese. The fries were a crispy beer battered fry. We got the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. They were cooked just right for the ultimate cheese pull. Downey's House was highly recommended for our family dinner night. There are many local drafts and cans to choose from. I liked the casual restaurant/bar set up. The menu was massive and had a little something for everyone. We ordered Missy's buffalo chicken dip and chicken bacon cheddar rolls for appetizers. What a pleasant surprise- stopped by for lunch and we were happy we did! So many reviews for the zucchini had me craving it, but unfortunately they have removed it from the menu. The pub burgers served here are in the upper teir of burgers for sure. Asking how you would like your burger cooked is always a good early sign. The dough was not dry at all and there was the proper ratio of cheese & pepperoni to dough. I had a mixed greens salad with buffalo grilled chicken. It was standard.
