I was walking down Strawberry Way and giving a new coworker a tour of downtown. When I decided the commoner was the place for lunch!

Walk to meet a downtown friend for lunch. Food was great. Service was excellent. Love this restaurant, for its location basement in shared space of the Monaco. Walking 7th and William Penn.

The Commoner was a decent spot, especially with it being right inside the hotel. The atmosphere is nice and it is convenient if you are already staying there. We really enjoyed the bartender. He was friendly, personable, and made our time at the bar enjoyable. We ordered a glass of wine and a dirty martini, and both drinks were great. My boyfriend ordered the hamburger and fries and said they were really good. I had the salmon, and while I usually do not mind salmon that is slightly raw, mine felt undercooked in a way that just did not work for me. It may have simply been their style, but it was not my favorite dish. Overall, it was an okay experience. We definitely like coming here for drinks, but the food did not fully meet my expectations this time.

My husband and I came to the commoner for breakfast while visiting Pittsburgh. The hostess sitting us told us the breakfast was the best in town. Unfortunately, we'd disagree. My husband and I both ordered iced lattes, which to our surprise they did not have any flavored syrup. My husband got the sausage egg sandwich and added a side of French fries, I was wanting something light so I ordered the yogurt parfait. It was piled high with fruit, however underneath the yogurt serving was quite small. The side of French fries was huge, however the egg sandwich wasn't the best we'd had while visiting Pittsburgh.

Have to give this place 5 stars. Came in about 10 minutes before they closed for lunch. Still received great service, an excellent smash burger, and a server with a great attitude despite the timing. Much appreciated.

Eggs Benedict 8/10 Very good Hollandaise. My eggs were a little under cooked, one of the whites was super runny and slimy still, that was gross. Homemade sausage 10/10 Delicious. Little bit of a maple flavor into it too. Pierogis and pork belly 10/10 Pierogis seemed homemade, a good flavor dough and filling, and cooked great. The pork belly was also cooked great, had a little bit of crispy to it, and the miso mustard sauce was also good.

The Commoner is a nice-casual restaurant and bar that is inside the Hotel Monaco and serves breakfast, brunch (on weekends), lunch, and dinner. For many years, my husband ate weekday business meals here, and he thought that the foods were average to good. Most recently, I made a reservation for a Saturday brunch. The seating hostess and waitress provided timely and polite service. The chefs cooked our foods in a reasonable time. Here are my ratings for what my husband and I ate: French Toast - 4 stars - I ate this entree of three slices of French toast that were topped with lemon ricotta, morello cherries, and candied almonds. On the side was syrup. The lemon was strong, but I liked the flavors. Eggs Benedict - 3.5 stars - My husband ate this entree. Two English muffins were topped with Canadian bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise. The eggs were only slightly runny so could have been cooked less. On the side were chunks of crispy potatoes that tasted very good. Sausage - 3.5 stars - My husband ate these two sausage patties. We were not sure of their exact ingredients and flavor, but they tasted decent. We drank hot tea and apple juice that tasted very good.

My boyfriend and I recently had dinner at the Commoner for their mystery after dark dinner. They had a prix fixe menu. The items on the menu are on their current dinner menu. We booked a reservation on Open Table. The Commoner is located in the Hotel Monaco downtown. For our appetizers, I ordered the spicy crab (chili crunch, Gruyère, and cheese bread) and my boyfriend ordered the winter salad. For our entrees, I ordered the salmon (stuffed kale, caramelized celery root, roasted citrus sauce) and he ordered the maitake (roasted barley, egg yolk, peppercorn sauce). For dessert I ordered the chocolate ganache and my boyfriend ordered some kind of deconstructed cheesecake. Overall our food was great. They do some really neat things with their ingredients and I appreciate that. Our service was good too. The restaurant itself has a warm and cozy vibe that's perfect for both dinner with family/friends or a date night.

I went to visit friends in town and they picked this location for us to meet for brunch. We made reservations through Open Table and made getting our table quickly. The restaurant has fantastic design and decor. The service was attentive from the hosts to the waitstaff and bartender. Started with a drink at the bar while waiting for everyone to arrive. Ordered The Boi of the Isles which sounded awesome with banana tullamore d.e.w., hot coffee, banana cardamaro whipped cream, tullamore banana chip and oh it was!! For brunch, We had Eggs Benedict with canadian bacon, poached eggs, hollandaise, crispy potatoes and the English muffin was perfectly crispy! The Malted Waffle had blueberry ricotta, blackberries and pistachio butter. It was fresh and super tasty! I highly suggest both Over all i felt the prices were very reasonable and you should give this spot a go when visiting or you live in town!

We stayed at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh and The Commoner is located inside. We had breakfast here for both mornings during our stay. The restaurant has a dark ambiance and calming mood, especially for a busy morning. We were seated promptly and our order taken quickly. We ordered majority of the breakfast options to enjoy. The food is roughly $20/per person. Our breakfast for 5 people was over $100. We ordered the cappuccino, which was decent. The food quality was just okay; I ordered the breakfast sandwich and got a hamburger bun to hold it together. I wasn't expecting that. It tasted great though, I just thought it would be something that matched the pricing. My husband enjoyed his bacon and eggs, as did our children. There's not much you can do to make them fancy and gourmet, but they do charge a lot for it. Overall it was a nice meal, we'd definitely consider it for our next visit to Pittsburgh.

This was one of the few places open near my hotel at around 8 AM for breakfast. I walked into a very contemporary, dark, moody, ambience which is probably not the vibe for a sunny Friday morning but I can see how it serves a purpose for later on in the day. I was greeted, and properly seated and the service was friendly. I always appreciate one place is a freshly squeezed juice-- and the grapefruit juice was lovely. I opted for the crab omelette, which was perfectly cooked. all in all I really enjoyed my breakfast here.

Cannot stop raving about The Commoner! Located in Hotel Monaco, this restaurant is stunning, dark and moody. I came here specifically for the Dry January Pre Fixe Dinner special they were offering! 3 courses and 3 paired mocktails! The food was amazing, I loved their wedge salad and the Striploin was also perfectly cooked. Both desserts were absolutely divine. We had leftovers- perfect for the next day. Don't skip the focaccia bread and herb butter!

I recently ordered breakfast room service/takeout from The Commoner while staying at Hotel Monaco. When staying at the hotel, they have a door hanger that you can fill out with your choices & what time you'd like your meal to be delivered. We ordered the steak & eggs, frittata, and berry bowl. The morning of our breakfast, we got a call to the room about an hour before our order was due for delivery. They said that even though the door hanger stated the steak & eggs was listed at $14, it is actually $41. I didn't even pay attention to the price when ordering & obviously $14 for steak & eggs is not correct but I feel that that is a pretty big price gap to be listed incorrectly. Additionally, the frittata says it comes with potatoes on the door hanger, but it actually doesn't. Those are my only complaints. The food was good and we enjoyed it but I feel like having the correct menu would make for a better experience

I was staying at this lovely hotel, and The Commander happened to be conveniently located downstairs. After a long day, we made it just in time to grab some food before they closed. The interior is elegant and chic, with dim lighting that sets the perfect mood for an evening cocktail after a day of meetings. I also saw the space during the daytime--it's a nice spot to work, grab a bite, or enjoy a drink. For dinner, we kept it simple and ordered burgers with fries. The burger was decent--not particularly exciting, but fine. However, I did find it overpriced for what we got. I also ordered an old-fashioned to pair with the meal, and it was satisfactory. My guest felt similarly about their food. For dessert, I was intrigued by the cheesecake custard but unsure if I'd like it. The waiter kindly let me try it, and after a few bites, I realized it wasn't for me. It reminded me of cheesecake pudding with crumbles, which might appeal to kids but didn't quite hit the mark for me. I think a classic cheesecake would be a better menu option and likely more popular. Overall, The Commander is a nice spot with an upscale vibe, but it is on the pricey side. If you're in downtown and have the budget, it's worth a visit. Their brunch menu looked promising, though I didn't get a chance to try it. Rating: 3 out of 5

There were actually a good amount of open seats, so I am not sure reservations were completely necessary, but it was still nice to have one. I honestly expected the inside to feel more extravagant and space themed, almost like an outer space vibe with more visual elements and atmosphere. I was hoping for something more immersive and futuristic. It was still cool overall, just not quite as visually dramatic as I imagined. We ordered an espresso martini and the Kiwi Nova. I really enjoyed my drink, especially after talking with the host who explained that they use scientific processes for their cocktails along with fresh purées and fresh ingredients. That is something I really appreciate because I am not a fan of drinks made with a lot of simple syrup or fake additives. He loved his espresso martini and said it was one of the best he has had. My drink was definitely on the sweeter side and I feel like too much of it might lead to a hangover, but it was still really good. Our server was attentive at first, but later on we ended up waiting a while to order another round. After sitting for a bit, we decided to order through the hostess instead and she got us taken care of right away. Overall, it was a cool experience mainly for the drinks. The cocktails were definitely the highlight. Service was okay, and I am not sure if we will return, but I am glad we finally got to check it out.

I've heard so many mixed things that I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed every aspect of my experience. It kind of has dive bar vibes but the food and drink options are definitely on the elevated side. They open at 4 on Sundays and I got there around 4:15. It was already pretty busy (and by the time I was leaving, every single table and bar stool were occupied). They have standard booth seats along the windows, hightop tables in the middle and bar seating along the bar that curves along the back of the restaurant. I chose to sit at the bar since I was by myself. I was promptly greeted by the bartender. They don't hand you copies of the menu, you have to scan the QR code to access. It is easy to read and follow with sections for drinks, specials (this time they were Wicked themed as a nod to the show at the Benedum) and a sushi section. I ordered the street corn dip. The chips were a bit overcooked and the dip was just OK. I thought it was pricey for what you got. The star of my meal, though, was the patty melt. It had the burger, a bacon jam, caramelized onions and was absolutely delicious! It was served with fries. I considered ordering sushi but wasn't sure what to expect. The patrons sitting on either side of my ordered rolls and they were a nice size and looked delicious, so that is something I would consider ordering in the future. It was a place I'll likely be back to because of the proximity to the theater (although their prices definitely reflect that). Just note how crowded it always is and give yourself plenty of time if you plan on heading here for dinner before the show.
