I decided to walk over to The Commoner from my hotel for breakfast and I'm glad I did! I didn't realize that it's a hotel restaurant but it has a very cool vibe. My fiancé and I got tickets for their inaugural dinner series. This was a 12 person, 6 course, intimate experience where each dish was paired with a Chilean wine. Hands down one of the coolest experiences I've ever had! Chef Racicot (legend) came out to explain the dishes, their garnishes, and the process behind some of them. Chilean wine ambassador Italo would share insights about each wine, their flavor profile, and why it pairs well with each dish. From the private space where the event was held, to the extremely attentive staff, and the absolutely delicious food and drinks, this was a night I'll never forget! Wow... what a disappointment. Went here for Easter Brunch. They did not say it was a cold brunch. The food was extremely limited, and nothing was warm. They served beef which was cold, the salads where ch there were 3 had no flavor, they served no desserts and anything else was really poor quality from stale bread to running out and not refilling. The service was ok but for $75 a person, you could have gone for a really nice meal somewhere. This is normal t including drinks as they were another add on. Not impressed at all. read more

The service was fast and friendly. I ordered Manhattan for drinks that was well prepared with a generous shot of whiskey. We ordered steak tartar, wedge, pork belly, and hamburger. They all were tasty. We ordered Crème Brûlée for dessert. It was tasty but lacked the crispy layer on top that was a big shortcoming. Two other points that cost this place one of my shiny stars are as follows: the menu was very short. A very limited list of items were available. Also, everything was a little bit overpriced. I was in Pittsburgh earlier this month to run the Pittsburgh (half) Marathon and had a wonderful celebratory dinner at The Commoner after the race on Sunday. Our waiter, Tyler B. was fantastic from start to finish and he really bared with me when I seemingly wanted everything on the menu. For starters, we ordered the Lady May, Focaccia, Beef Tartare, and Roasted Beet salad. Literally everything was delicious. I could have had about six beef tartare but I know I'll be back in Pittsburgh soon enough and will order at least two more ;) Oh and the herb butter that came with the focaccia was amazing! The beet salad was a little different than I expected but who am I kidding, I ate it all regardless. The combination of whipped yogurt, blue cheese, savory granola, and huckleberry vinaigrette was interesting yet tasty. On to the entrees, I ordered the Maitake (barley risotto, black truffle butter, sunflower seeds, egg yolk sauce) while my boyfriend enjoyed the Fried Porkchop (brussel sprouts, dried fruit, mustard cream sauce). I am pretty sure I devoured my risotto while the boyfriend required a to-go container which, luckily for me, meant we left room for dessert!!! We ended up splitting the cheesecake custard while enjoying a latte and americano. The cheesecake custard is pretty heavy on the custard part. It is not your typical slice of cheesecake but the freeze dried strawberry crumb it comes with was really good, almost like pieces of strawberry dough. Anyway, I'll stop while I'm ahead. Our entire experience was great and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to dine at The Commoner. When I was in Pittsburgh a few years ago I just ordered the beef tartare for take out and I had seriously been longing to go back ever since... some things never change, I'll be thinking about The Commoner until I can dine there again! We got french toast, omelette, potatoes and sourdough toast, along with orange juice. All delicious!! They delivered exactly on time. Although this restaurant is located in the basement of a hotel, it's open to the public and a convenient place to grab dinner before catching a show in the Cultural District. We each chose a cocktail from the tempting menu. I believe my dining partner enjoyed her pork dish. I had the mushroom risotto and found it rather one note. Love this hip, modern gastropub that serves farm to table eats at the bottom of the Kimpton Hotel. The vibe is dark and moody with their dim lighting and leather furniture. Loved the Cavatelli, the pesto had a zesty citrus flavor and there were big pieces of lump crab. The Maitake was by far the showstopper! Still dreaming of the black truffle butter risotto. At first I was hesitant because of the egg yolk sauce but it was the perfect texture. Thick, creamy, and savory! Came here the first night after the Pearl Jam concert on 5/15/2025 and they called last call at 10:45 pm when everyone in the Hotel was waiting to be served and have a good time. Why not stay up another 1 hrs or so to serve all those customer. Do you not want to make your Hotel customers feel welcome at your local bar where they want to give you their business ? Gave them another chance the next evening right before going out for dinner to get a drink and we couldn't even get an employee over to serve us after 20 minutes. We finally went up to the bar ourselves to get drinks. . A mix of maggie's farm falernum, hendrick's, lavender, citrus, and avissi, the sleepy 75 was a light and refreshing drink. She then recommended the fried pork chop which fried Brussel sprouts and fried fruit, and mustard cream sauce. The dried fruit was such a nice touch in my Brussel sprouts, and such a nice way to spruce up the flavor of my pork chops; which was delicious on its own. Everyone else in the table of 12 enjoyed their food and drinks. Someone ordered the halibut and they thought it was very buttery. Someone ordered the smashing drunk and thought it was steering but good. Someone ordered the wagyu burger but they would not recommend it.
