Mushroom Toast
Dominique N.

The food was good, with the potatoes being the best, but with the ingredients and price point I would expect more flavor from the mushroom toast and the crab omelet. The OJ and my cappuccino were good. The place is cute attached to the hotel, but with so many brunch options around I am not sure this one would be my go to.

I was walking down Strawberry Way and giving a new coworker a tour of downtown. When I decided the commoner was the place for lunch!

Walk to meet a downtown friend for lunch. Food was great. Service was excellent. Love this restaurant, for its location basement in shared space of the Monaco. Walking 7th and William Penn.

Half Chicken with Tandoori was interesting

Decor was impeccable, service was top notch, and the food was solid. Wasn't the biggest fan of the seasoning of the half chicken, but the cook on the chicken was perfect. Really liked this spot. The staff was great, the location was central, and its very upper crust. Great place for date night, drinks, and fellowship. I definitely will need to try another dish on my next visit.

This place has changed so many times over the years. Had the chance to stop here trice recently and had great experiences both times. Their lunch menu is very limited, but each thing on it is delicious. I've had the commoner burger, the fried chicken sandwich, and the chopped salad. All are amazing. The commoner burger is probably my favorite and is one of the best smash burgers in the city. Perfectly cooked, fresh meat, and every bite has so much flavor. They also give a garlic aioli and homemade ranch with their fries, both of which are delicious. Highly recommend!

The Commoner was a decent spot, especially with it being right inside the hotel. The atmosphere is nice and it is convenient if you are already staying there. We really enjoyed the bartender. He was friendly, personable, and made our time at the bar enjoyable. We ordered a glass of wine and a dirty martini, and both drinks were great. My boyfriend ordered the hamburger and fries and said they were really good. I had the salmon, and while I usually do not mind salmon that is slightly raw, mine felt undercooked in a way that just did not work for me. It may have simply been their style, but it was not my favorite dish. Overall, it was an okay experience. We definitely like coming here for drinks, but the food did not fully meet my expectations this time.

Eggs Benedict 8/10 Very good Hollandaise. My eggs were a little under cooked, one of the whites was super runny and slimy still, that was gross. Homemade sausage 10/10 Delicious. Little bit of a maple flavor into it too. Pierogis and pork belly 10/10 Pierogis seemed homemade, a good flavor dough and filling, and cooked great. The pork belly was also cooked great, had a little bit of crispy to it, and the miso mustard sauce was also good.

My husband and I came to the commoner for breakfast while visiting Pittsburgh. The hostess sitting us told us the breakfast was the best in town. Unfortunately, we'd disagree. My husband and I both ordered iced lattes, which to our surprise they did not have any flavored syrup. My husband got the sausage egg sandwich and added a side of French fries, I was wanting something light so I ordered the yogurt parfait. It was piled high with fruit, however underneath the yogurt serving was quite small. The side of French fries was huge, however the egg sandwich wasn't the best we'd had while visiting Pittsburgh.

Have to give this place 5 stars. Came in about 10 minutes before they closed for lunch. Still received great service, an excellent smash burger, and a server with a great attitude despite the timing. Much appreciated.

The Commoner is a nice-casual restaurant and bar that is inside the Hotel Monaco and serves breakfast, brunch (on weekends), lunch, and dinner. For many years, my husband ate weekday business meals here, and he thought that the foods were average to good. Most recently, I made a reservation for a Saturday brunch. The seating hostess and waitress provided timely and polite service. The chefs cooked our foods in a reasonable time. Here are my ratings for what my husband and I ate: French Toast - 4 stars - I ate this entree of three slices of French toast that were topped with lemon ricotta, morello cherries, and candied almonds. On the side was syrup. The lemon was strong, but I liked the flavors. Eggs Benedict - 3.5 stars - My husband ate this entree. Two English muffins were topped with Canadian bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise. The eggs were only slightly runny so could have been cooked less. On the side were chunks of crispy potatoes that tasted very good. Sausage - 3.5 stars - My husband ate these two sausage patties. We were not sure of their exact ingredients and flavor, but they tasted decent. We drank hot tea and apple juice that tasted very good.

Cannot stop raving about The Commoner! Located in Hotel Monaco, this restaurant is stunning, dark and moody. I came here specifically for the Dry January Pre Fixe Dinner special they were offering! 3 courses and 3 paired mocktails! The food was amazing, I loved their wedge salad and the Striploin was also perfectly cooked. Both desserts were absolutely divine. We had leftovers- perfect for the next day. Don't skip the focaccia bread and herb butter!

This was one of the few places open near my hotel at around 8 AM for breakfast. I walked into a very contemporary, dark, moody, ambience which is probably not the vibe for a sunny Friday morning but I can see how it serves a purpose for later on in the day. I was greeted, and properly seated and the service was friendly. I always appreciate one place is a freshly squeezed juice-- and the grapefruit juice was lovely. I opted for the crab omelette, which was perfectly cooked. all in all I really enjoyed my breakfast here.

My boyfriend and I recently had dinner at the Commoner for their mystery after dark dinner. They had a prix fixe menu. The items on the menu are on their current dinner menu. We booked a reservation on Open Table. The Commoner is located in the Hotel Monaco downtown. For our appetizers, I ordered the spicy crab (chili crunch, Gruyère, and cheese bread) and my boyfriend ordered the winter salad. For our entrees, I ordered the salmon (stuffed kale, caramelized celery root, roasted citrus sauce) and he ordered the maitake (roasted barley, egg yolk, peppercorn sauce). For dessert I ordered the chocolate ganache and my boyfriend ordered some kind of deconstructed cheesecake. Overall our food was great. They do some really neat things with their ingredients and I appreciate that. Our service was good too. The restaurant itself has a warm and cozy vibe that's perfect for both dinner with family/friends or a date night.

Can anyone out there, comment on their dining experience @ The Commoner since it moved to the rooftop biergarten space?

I have not dined at their usual space so I can't compare the two but I can say that dining at the rooftop space was very pleasant. It's also really nice that you get to enjoy the rooftop without the crowds. Menu is different from the regular menu to…

The staff they had at the convention were all super-cool people. They served great drinks. I haven't seen their drink menu, so I just said a few words about what I like, and they mixed up good stuff -- at reduced alcohol per my request. Perfect! Best of all, they had the acclaimed science fiction and fantasy author Mary Robinette Kowal as their special guest. (But she lives in North Carolina, so don't expect her as a regular in the Pittsburgh location.) Space Bar is obviously LGBT+ friendly, but it's an everyone bar. OK, maybe not everyone: it will be more fun if you're interested in science fiction and fantasy, and don't upset the vibe. I'll be sure to visit the in-person location next time I'm in Pittsburgh.

The Hype is not deserved here…read more Let's begin with parking: one poor valet trying to keep up. Turned away as no more space. The area is a traffic disaster. Rooftop bar? Most seating and is interior and without view. You can peer over the sides or stand outside, no reservations, and packed. Drinks are average. Not high end cocktails, rather, locally distilled brew with too much mixer. Food is bar food. Meh at best. Service appears to want to be anywhere else but here. Inattentive and slow. It's screaming loud, the crowd appears to have migrated from Donzis (iykyk). If you have been to other urban roof top bars and are hoping this is Pittsburgh's equivalent, sadly, it misses the mark.

The bar serves cocktails, wines, beers, and mocktails. For dinner and late-night bites, the restaurant focuses mostly on small plates and shareables, including charcuterie, chicken wings, pizzetta, steak, and salmon. They also have a Sunday brunch that serves lox bagel, shrimp and grits, French toast, mimosa, bloody Mary, etcetera. My husband and I ate one lunch here. The best aspect of The Finch was its beautiful views of downtown Pittsburgh's skyscrapers, Monongahela River, and subway trains. The foods and drink were a mixture of quality, and my husband called them "garbage" (eek!). Here are my ratings for them. Berry Mint Spritz - 4 stars - This mocktail (I could have ordered it with alcohol to turn it into a cocktail) contained strawberries, mint, lemon, syrup, and soda water. All of the flavor had settled on the bottom of the glass, so I could have used a straw to mix the drink, but I did enjoy the flavors. Summer Crab Cakes - 2 stars - I received two crab cakes, and they were some of the worst crab cakes that I have ever received anywhere. They contained too much breading and too little meat. I did not even like the flavor of the cherry tomatoes on the side. I usually love crab cakes, but with these ones, I could take only a couple of bites, and then I had the waitress throw away the rest. Hawaiian Pizzetta - 4 stars - This small pizza consisted of four slices that had cheese but no gooey cheese-pull. Other toppings were BBQ sauce drizzle, pineapple, ham, and red pepper. I thought that it tasted good. Ember Steak Skewers - 4 stars - My husband said that the steak was not the highest quality. At least the chunks of steak, peppers, onions, and mushroom (we counted one piece of mushroom!) were marinated and seasoned nicely. The total cost for this one mocktail, three foods, and one soda was $79 *plus* a 3% credit-card surcharge, tax, and a minimum tip of 18%. We asked the waitress for a receipt, but she did not bring us one, so we walked up to her to ask for it again, and we did receive it.
