Went here on a recent trip to Pittsburgh. It was a pretty tough experience. Started with our server seating us and then explaining that they were out of a few things. Normally I'd say this isn't a big deal: two entrees and an appetizers. It happens. But the list continued to grow throughout the night (read on intrepid Yelper!). She left to grab some waters and came back about 15 minutes later. And then dashed off again. Finally put our orders in (was told then they were also out of some sodas and another appetizer, again it happens... but to this degree?) and waited for our drinks and food. And waited and waited and waited. Got our drinks 45 minutes after we sat down; importantly the place was not busy. During that time we were revisited once to be told they were out of another entree that some people had ordered. So some orders had to change. Appetizers took a full hour to show up. Entrees took another 30 minutes. Asked for some condiments - "we don't have that." Look, I get it restaurants have days when people call in or don't show up. Restaurants run out of stuff. But this was excessive. We were rarely checked on even to be given an ongoing apology just to let us know "hey I know this sucks, I recognize it and I'm sorry." We ran out of water (they bring a big bottle and you're on your own to refill it, and once that ran out we were just out of luck). If the food or drinks were really exceptional then some of this gets washed away. Unfortunately the food was just standard bar fare. It wasn't special. It was epically "serviceable." I do not recommend going. You're going to be far better off just taking the trolley back down and going somewhere else. read more

After watching the movie, "Mrs. Soffel," our group visited the Shiloh Gastro. The building was once the home of Kate Soffel and her husband, Peter, the warden of the Allegheny County Jail. The movie is based on the 1902 scandalous jailbreak that defined Kate's life. The Shiloh Gastro is known to be haunted. The paranormal activity in the building is often attributed to Kate. Patrons and staff have reported seeing the ghostly figure in a white gown. There has been other reported activity in the building, such as flickering lights, the smell of cigarette smoke (non-smoking building) and unexplained footsteps. Our group was there later in the evening and the only patrons seated on the upper level near the fireplace. We heard unexplained footsteps as no one else was upstairs or in the room with us. It did not scare us away, we knew the history. We did stay to enjoy the craft cocktails and mocktails. The menu included gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan fare which worked for everyone's needs in our group. Everything was delicious! *****The staff is exceptional!!***** They were attentive, knowledgeable and familiar with the history of the building. We will definitely be visiting the Shiloh Gastro again. read more

We stopped in on a rainy Thursday night for a post meeting drink and a snack. It's so inviting with the fireplace on the first floor dining room, and this time we were at the bar, which is nice with stationary bar stools with swivel seat tops. There's also a couple tall tables in the room. The bartender was perfectly pleasant and helpful as my party enjoyed the chance to catch up in conversation. Picture it: it's a beautiful fall Friday night and you're working here when the worst possible thing happens at 8pm -a couple walks in and wants to have dinner. Evidently that's how Leah felt when my husband and I walked in for dinner tonight. How did I know her name? Because we stood for so long waiting to be acknowledged that I read the table map on the host stand 15x. Dan. Michael. Leah. After being rudely "greeted" with an explanation that they were "cleaning up," asking us to sit at the bar (we didn't want to sit at the bar), and "it's going to be a few minutes" (to which we said okay no problem), we continued waiting. Finally we decided to just leave and on the way out we passed Leah who still appeared to be having the worst day of her life. I let her know we'd do her a favor and leave since we seemed to be majorly inconveniencing her by being present and her reply was "okay sure." Such a shame I can't actually review the food. I'm curious when we should visit that won't be such a problem for an establishment in the restaurant business... By the way -we simply went down one block to Shilo Plate & Pour, got the last table outside (it was packed!) and was able to enjoy live music and an amazing waitress. read more

Even though we walked into pretty late, service was great. My kid loved his burger. My wings (I think something sriracha) were delicious. Savory and cooked perfectly. For starters, the shrimp and crab stuffed mushrooms were a hit--baby portobellos filled with a rich mix of crab, spinach, and cream cheese, topped with garlic butter shrimp and balsamic glaze. Flavor-packed and satisfying. Next up was the strawberry caprese salad--a fresh spring mix tossed in balsamic vinaigrette, with red onions, diced strawberries, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. It was the perfect light and seasonal dish. For the main course, I tried one of their new menu items: stuffed shells filled with chicken, spinach, tomatoes, onions, cream cheese, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Served with garlic bread, this dish was indulgent, fresh, and absolutely delicious. I ended the meal with their cinnamon roll bread pudding, served warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel--comforting, decadent, and the ideal sweet finish. Can't believe I have never made it here before. Big fan of this area of Mount Washington and I've heard so many good things about this spot in particular. It's nice that they have their own little parking lot, and if it's full there is always street parking or a number of public options such as a big lot just a couple of blocks away. It was an unseasonably warm day in late October so we sat on the outdoor patio and enjoyed their adorable Halloween decorations. We both ordered the mac & cheese, which was about as perfect as mac & cheese gets. Very cheesy and made with the right kind of pasta. It's available with a lot of add-on options such as proteins or veggies, too. Also ordered side salads which were very good, and I thought the dressings were noteworthy as at least some of them seem to be housemade. For example, there is a lemon honey vinaigrette and an apricot vinaigrette; I ordered the latter over my usual honey mustard and it was delicious. Finally there were the drinks; there were lots of fall specials and I seriously considered the flight of four mini versions of local fall beers. In the end I couldn't pass up the pumpkin espresso martini and that was a very good choice. Our server didn't hesitate to offer suggestions, was prompt and checked in often. This is clearly a neighborhood favorite, we saw plenty of groups coming in to grab drinks only, as well as groups coming to eat full meals. I love their burgers, their salads, their pumpkin sangria, their chicken. It's all good. I recommend it highly. Went with my niece because of the vegan options and it didn't disappoint. The mushroom toast was a tasty appetizer to share. I had the mahi sandwich and subbed onion rings, all quite good. My niece loved the stuffed pepper. The cocktail menu was creative too. I loved the Shine on You Crazy Diamond. The service was friendly and attentive too. We enjoyed a nice walk along Grand Ave afterwards. The place has a feel of being just pub food, but it's actually a pretty creative menu. We'll be back again. read more

Absolutely delicious and amazing spot. I enjoyed both of the items I tried out from this place quite a lot. The location is also pretty nice. They have many of the American classics but they elevate them to another level. I tried out their pesto veggie melt and pierogi cheesecake. The pesto veggie melt was delicious. It was loaded with lots of fresh and tasty ingredients like cheese, spinach, mushrooms, some carrots, and other vegetables. They also include some sort of butter on the sandwich. It might have been a touch too much butter for me, but still, excellent. The bread was fresh and crispy too. They included fries with the sandwich as well, but they were just alright. Not bad, just not memorable. The pierogi cheesecake sounded like a unique dessert. It was very, very good. The portion is enough to share definitely. The inside is creamy. It is strawberry flavored but does taste a bit artificial. Still very good. They serve it with incredible strawberry ice cream that adds some coolness. Would definitely recommend this dish. All in all, highly recommend this gastro. High quality food for sure and a solid location. Definitely try the pierogi cheesecake. I'd come back! read more

3 days ago Great beer selection, good cocktails, lovely service but forget the food. It is ALWAYS so hit or miss. The menus hardly ever change seasonally and the stuff on the menu is always so inconsistently prepared. I don't know if the cook is drunk half the time or if they just go through different cooks often. Their prices are way too high for the quality, or lack thereof when it comes to the food. Their "specials" are lame as is their happy hour. Also, not sure what the deal is with the owner/manager, he often seems so angry or annoyed ‍ He doesn't know how to manage his annoyances and it shows in his actions and face. There are never buybacks or a sense he gives a crap about his patrons. Think he's the reason food is so inconsistent here, guessing he makes his cooks reheat food instead of making it fresh. Great place that needs better management, food and cooks. Several better places on Shiloh if you're after food. Won't be back. read more

Very inconsistent. Went about a month ago for the first time and felt like I finally found a new place. The burgers and flatbread were amazing and the sweet potato fries were fresh, delicious. Everything was so good that I bought extras to take home. It was so good that I went again a few days later. This visit was terrible. We sat for over a half hour before we were given water (should have left). I found a hostess and they forgot to tell a server we were sat. It took another 1 hour and 15 min from that point to get food and the restaurant wasn't even busy. Our cheesesteak sandwich was overcooked and gristle meat. The ceaser salad was inedible, drenched in dressing and bagged croutons (I expected homemade since most of the menu is). Terrible experience. It became comically bad how poor the service was. We went back a third time, hoping the second was a one-off, since the first time was wonderful, I wanted to give it another try. This time was even worse. No lie, we didn't receive our dinner for 1.5 hours AFTER our appetizer. A party of 12 was sat after us, were served their meals and ate before we even got our meals. And when we did, 3 out of 4 side dishes were the wrongs ones, cheeseburger without cheese, bacon burger without bacon, burned chicken sandwich. I am really disappointed because it has the potential to be good, but the wait staff is terrible twice now, which I assume is the reason everything is wrong and bad timing in the kitchen. I can definitely say I'll never go back which is unfortunate because I really thought I found a great place..which is so hard anymore. read more

Great place for happy hour (4-6 T-F)! They have a bunch of $6 small plate apps like a small version of the regular poutine, wings, mozzarella sticks, and nachos. Roasted red pepper hummus was decent but lacked flavor. They serve it was awesome warm pita and celery carrots and cucumbers. I suggest adding a little bit of hot sauce and salt. Poutine is very good! The gravy was exceptional for Pittsburgh. Lots of cheese as well. Perfect size if you don't want to gorge yourself on fries. I've heard their fish tacos and loaded mac and cheese are great so I will be back! Service is always awesome. The one owner, Gene, that is here all the time is very nice and incredibly attentive. We came across this place after our hike in Emerald View trail . The drinks here are so good. I had the peach sangria and it's so refreshing not too sweet.,it was perfect. Their happy house menu for $6 bites was good. We only tired the hummus place and it's was very satisfying. It came with veggies and really good best I ever had fried artichokes. Shiloh Gastro is the perfect spot on the Mount to grab a bite and drinks with friends. The staff is very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is very laid back. They have options to sit at the bar or dining room, as well as a large patio area and even an upstairs for private events. I've already been here a few times since they're opened, and the food, drinks, and service have been consistently great! They make the BEST dirty martinis, and I could rave on and on about the salmon BLT. Portion sizes are generous and you can sub your side of fries for many options (of which, I suggest the sweet potato fries). I forgot to mention Shiloh Gastro has a great weekday Happy Hour, too, that includes discounted apps and a couple bucks off all the draft beers! read more

These fries. I dream about these fries. I think they're called wing fries now? Get them with Buffalo sauce and chicken. I could eat these for every meal. Mt Washington is the best palace to take visitors and we almost always make a stop here as well, specifically for these fries. Their other food is good too! Mac n cheese is on point, hummus and veggies are great, beer is great. Service is good too! Never had any problems. Good indoor seating, a little more intimate inside if you're not in the bar area. We dined at Shiloh Gastro on a gorgeous fall day! It was wonderful to have easy parking, and a great city-street feel after a long day of searching for parking in Oakland area. City views are steps away, along with a fun/terrifying ride on the funicular. Food was your typical pub food - we enjoyed the Totchos, Gastro Burger, Fish Tacos and Buffalo Chicken Mac. All highly recommended. For dessert we enjoy the Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding -- OUT OF THIS WORLD deliciousness. Our server was friendly, but service was a bit slower than we hoped. I really want to like this place. It is laid back, patio seating, good drinks. But the food was too salty. I love mashed potatoes and they make real ones but I hardly ate any because of the salt. I also had the grilled jerk portabella tacos which, well, too much salt. The food was better the last time I ate there although I don't remember what I had. I don't recall it being so salty, though. Their mac and cheese is quite good but I'm trying to be healthier- that's why I got the mashed potatoes instead of French fries. (I had those my last visit and, oh yeah, they were good!) I brought my dog and she got water right away (as did I). I don't eat it often and I don't eat much prepared foods so I tend to be more sensitive to salt. But, it was much more noticeable in tonight's meal. read more
