Stopped in for bevvies during a hike. Sat at the bar rail at the window facing out; great view of the foot traffic on Butler Street. Neighborhood place, feels very Pittsburgh. Front of house staff (bartenders in this case). Super friendly and very nice. Wings are pretty solid; garlic Parm and regular buffalo. No breading, just good fry and good sauces. My counterpart totally loves the crisp on the wings: "Total happiness for me. I think they are really good." read more

We came on a Saturday night around 9pm and were able to snag a booth because people were leaving. There is someone at the door carding everyone. They have solid drunk pub food and we ordered wings, fries, and a few other food items along with beer pitchers and trash cans. This is your typical divey bar and it's nothing fancy but if that's your vibe then it's great! I asked for an amaretto sour and they had to check to see if they had amaretto (they do!) which I found funny. It can get pretty crowded and it's not super big so come early if you want to make sure to get a table! read more

I went with a friend. He got the gyro wrap and he really liked it. I got the chicken tender wrap with buffalo sauce. It was good and hot the spot. I just wish that they came with a side of fries or chips. I know I could have ordered a side but I didn't want a whole order I just wanted some to come with my wrap. The staff was great! It was a Tuesday night so it wasn't busy. We sat at the bar! read more

This place has a lot going for it. Amazing wings, cool bartenders, awesome place to watch sports. And is a pretty social spot. You can either grab a table and sit with your friends or stay at the bar and socialize with everyone else there. Ages of patrons varies a lot which is great. For as busy as the bar was during a football game (non-Steelers), the bartenders were trying their best to keep up. I ordered the wings which are one dollar each. They were delicious. Just a amount of crispiness. And the kitchen closes late at 10:30 PM. I had already been here a few times before but just had a desire now to write a review, great place read more

William Penn is a great bar. The food always comes really quickly, we love all the servers especially Becca. It's a great value but also great bar food. It can get pretty packed on the weekends with football so get there early to get a seat. read more

The William Penn Tavern is one of the few places that my girlfriend and I both agree on when it comes to bar food. Since moving to Pittsburgh back in 2015, it has become a location that I always recommend to friends. Their wings are seriously good. Always $1 each and they are fried and coated to perfection. I typically order the Buffalo sauce which is an awesome blend of spice and pickleness. All of their appetizers such as the basket of fries come out in large portions. I will note that the WPT is busy on nights when Pittsburgh teams are playing. The environment is typically loud between the music and patrons. I have no problem with it, but expect a loud environment. If you want a calmer lunch, it's a great spot for bar food! read more

Get the 'Kitchen Sink' wings, you'll be glad that you did. Excellent sauce. It might not be good for you, but it's GOOD!

The old WPT was definitely very different back in the day. It's pretty big in here and the crowd is definitely a lot older than the college crowd back on Walnut St. More young professionals hanging out and watching games. It's a typical dive bar with beer and well drinks and bar food. The food looked ok. The drinks were ok. It gets pretty crowded on a Friday night and they do card at the door. It's also pretty loud in here, you have to scream and everyone's screaming so it adds to the noise. Nice spot for the nostalgia and when you feel like getting wings and a beer. Service was kinda slow and if you sit at a table, you order at the table and not at the bar. The waitress did check on us a lot which was nice. read more

I strongly suggest training your servers to take allergies seriously. After being notified of a severe allergy to eggs, we asked our server to check an appetizer. We had to ask about 5 different appetizers separately because she kept saying "I don't think it has egg" and then it did. then when we ordered our meal, it had eggs in it. The server barely apologized and we had to leave to get Benadryl. Service was also just bad :/ ignored our table Thank u for comping the meal but.. This is a restaurants #1 liability, and I advise management to take it more seriously. Thanks! PS. Pickle fries were really good read more

William Penn Tavern is a great local neighborhood bar. Open seven days a week- perfect spot to watch Pittsburgh sports! Serving daily dollar wings and beer specials. Home of the Original John Daly and Kitchen Sink Wing Sauce. They have a typical tavern-style food menu with wings, salads, wraps, sandwiches and all the delicious fried appetizers. Highly recommend their fried pickles- they aren't chips and aren't spears- more of a pickle fry! And I always find myself getting their amazing wings- I change the sauce each time I go so I can try something new- I have liked every single one. Grab a stool at the bar, along their open-air windows or a seat at a table and kick back with some friends with enjoying a cold one and some good food. read more

Your friendly neighborhood bar with several screens for sport, touchtunes to for your listening pleasure and fantastic wings. The bar staff were pleasant. The patrons were courteous. The beer selection is large and inexpensive. They also have a variety of NA beers to choose from as well. $1 wings all of time. They are extra crispy and the "kitchen sink" sauce is divine. Perfect, chill, spot to catch a game, beer, wings and some great conversation. Thumbs up. read more

I had a very mixed bag experience at Will Penn the other night. I stopped in with some friends for wings & beer. The atmosphere is super crowded, but we were still able to snag a small table. Despite the crowd, service was quick which I appreciated! The beer was fine, but the food was where everything seemed hit or miss. My chicken wings were incredibly bitter and tasted like soap - I could barely get through eating a couple. Others in the group, however, had really good wings. I think what you order really matters. Also, serving sizes were super inconsistent. I ordered 6 wings but was served 12, and my friend ordered 10 wings but was served nearly 20! Food: C Drinks: B- Service: B+ Ambiance: C+ read more

My favorite wings in Pittsburgh! I've been coming to the WPT since it was in Shadyside and have yet to find wings that top theirs. The buffalo sauce is just the right spice level and nice and vinegary. The wings are crispy. They don't skip on the sauce either so definitely want some napkins. Additionally, the fries are always crispy + well seasoned, and the ranch is great for dipping both wings and fries. This is a casual place and most of the time, you seat yourself. No complaints on service, I've always found servers were attentive and this time is no different. WPT does get a little loud (touchtunes music) if you go later on a weekend. All in all, a great spot to get wings and catch a game! read more

If I could put a negative review I would. Their bouncer belongs in prison. He physically assaulted half of the people in our group, and I think he was on drugs. If we were not with friends from out of town, I would have called the police. He grabbed friends by the neck, shoved us, accused people in my party of touching him when we were 5+ feet away. We watched him do this to two other groups from our seats. The bartenders here were great and the only reason we stayed for one drink. Genuinely unacceptable and the worst experience I have ever had at a bar in Pittsburgh in my entire life of living in this city. read more

They've moved from Shadyside to Lawrenceville, however the food is somehow worse. Lawrenceville needs a good classic PGH bar like this, but unfortunately, the wings (which is what they are known for) were pretty bad. I ordered 6 medium and 6 kitchen sink. I never send food back, but the wings I got were dried out and COLD - like the bone was literally cold. They are understaffed, so it was difficult to flag a waitress down. Sent them back and they quickly came back with another round... which somehow also weren't hot, but at least not cold. The kitchen sink sauce is what they recommend and it sucked. The wings were drowning in sauce, but clearly not tossed in the sauce. The wings are pretty cheap, but there are so many better places for wings in the city. I would pass on going here again unless it was my only option. Archie's, Smokin Joes, Bingham tavern, etc all have much better Pittsburgh dive bar wings! read more

Great for sports games if you're into that. Decent beer selection and not too expensive. However, everyone raves about the food here and it's completely delusional. They're known for their wings, but every single wing sauce I've tried tastes exactly the same, because they dump celery salt in all of them. Seriously. Buffalo wing sauce doesn't have celery salt. Bbq sauce doesn't have celery salt. Well, they do at this place. It's gross. So bitter and salty. It's a real shame, the wings are crispy and well made, it's just the sauces that are awful. The burgers taste like the patty went straight from Sysco's freezers to the grill. Look, this place is definitely a local favorite, so you can probably ignore the opinions of this guy right here, but I think it's highly overrated. Get a beer when they have specials going on, but go anywhere else for food. Take seriously all the reviews that mention hostility to customers. They once served me wings that were completely inedible. When I mentioned this to the bartender, he took them away and still charged me for them anyway. That's not how you treat customers. I don't expect people to bend over backwards for me, but when I can't even eat the meal I'm being served, a good restaurant or tavern will replace or refund, especially if you haven't had more than a bite. Buyer beware. If I didn't have locals dragging me to this place, I'd never go here. I definitely don't order the food anymore. read more

William Penn Tavern - Kitchen Sink Bone in wings & Basket of Fries - Sports Bars Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Also know as Penn Tavern, this bar is a staple among Yinzers in Shadyside. As with anything in Pittsburgh, it is 100% a Steelers/Penguins/Pirates bar, so of the game is on, you can bet a pepperoni roll they will have it on. The main bartender is known as "Boss" and is really a barkeep in every sense of the word. Very personable and overall a good dude. The food here is some of the best bar food I've had in Pitt. Their wings are probabaly their bestseller, and with a myriad of flavors and sauces to choose from. The boneless wings are hand breaded, and are delicious as well. It is bar so as long as they have the ingredients there, they will accomodate certain orders within reason. If you find yourself in Shadyside or on Walnut St. and want a cold beverage, or good food, stop on in to William Penn! read more

Horrible rude service to entire table. The managers and wait staff literally did not care and the waitress laughed at us. The bartender was another story never ever have we been treated so poorly and rudely. Food subpar. Do not recommend. Doesn't seem like they care what anyone thinks. They have a clientele that seems to be ok with rudeness. Also we are easy Non Karen type people and great tippers so the behavior was uncalled for. read more

After going through the other reviews listed for this place I can see that a majority of people seem to focus on the 'Tavern' part. But if you are like me and you are looking for a place to get lunch in Shadyside, you need to reconsider the name and take a venture in here. While in Shadyside I attempted to stop at several other locations prior to coming here, each of those places were not open for the lunch hour, or if they were to open it was for a late lunch which I did not have time for. After being deterred by the other establishments I stumbled upon William Penn Tavern. I had been here before for a drink with friends years ago and scoffed at the idea of getting lunch here. I should smack myself for thinking that because the lunch I ended up having was twice the amount of food compared to other establishments. The menu isn't lengthy at all, in fact it is one of the smallest menus I have come across in a while. Looking at it I just thought I would get a small amount of food that would hold me over until later in the day. After glancing over the menu I had set in mind what I wanted. When the bartender came back to me I gave my order and waited. I ordered the Inadequacy Dog with cheese and some tots. While waiting for my order to be prepared I finally took a look around the interior to take it all in. Surprisingly there is a lot of natural light in here, chalk that up to the huge skylight located right over the bar. Sports paraphernalia lines every inch of this place, I especially like the bobble-heads that are in abundance here. Sports flags, jerseys, etc. are everywhere. If that that catch your eye, let your ears do the exploring here. Several televisions broadcasting various programs or just listen to the banter that takes place between the employees and frequent patrons. With the delivery of my food I was brought back to reality and thought to myself that my eyes were bigger than my stomach. The tots were plentiful. Nice and crispy with each bite you take and unlike some places they do not stick to each other causing the loss of some amazing potato morsels. Then when I finally noticed the Inadequacy Dog, what I can say about this is that the only thing that inadequate about this is how hungry you thought you were. This is probably one of the most massive hot dogs I have ever seen. The menu describes it as a foot-long hot dog, what the menu leaves out is the fact that this hot dog is about double the size around than most foot-longs you come across. I had to cut this dog into smaller bites. Not only that, but I took half of the hot dog and a good portion of the tots with me and had that as my dinner later in the day. Top this all off with some fantastically fast service and it was a perfect lunch that I had. **I did not partake in the beer selection, nor bar atmosphere later in the day** read more
