This place has a lot going for it. Amazing wings, cool bartenders, awesome place to watch sports. And is a pretty social spot. You can either grab a table and sit with your friends or stay at the bar and socialize with everyone else there. Ages of patrons varies a lot which is great. The William Penn Tavern is one of the few places that my girlfriend and I both agree on when it comes to bar food. Since moving to Pittsburgh back in 2015, it has become a location that I always recommend to friends. Their wings are seriously good. Always $1 each and they are fried and coated to perfection. I typically order the Buffalo sauce which is an awesome blend of spice and pickleness. All of their appetizers such as the basket of fries come out in large portions. I will note that the WPT is busy on nights when Pittsburgh teams are playing. The environment is typically loud between the music and patrons. The old WPT was definitely very different back in the day. It's pretty big in here and the crowd is definitely a lot older than the college crowd back on Walnut St. More young professionals hanging out and watching games. It's a typical dive bar with beer and well drinks and bar food. The food looked ok. The drinks were ok. It gets pretty crowded on a Friday night and they do card at the door. It's also pretty loud in here, you have to scream and everyone's screaming so it adds to the noise. Nice spot for the nostalgia and when you feel like getting wings and a beer. I strongly suggest training your servers to take allergies seriously. After being notified of a severe allergy to eggs, we asked our server to check an appetizer. We had to ask about 5 different appetizers separately because she kept saying "I don't think it has egg" and then it did. then when we ordered our meal, it had eggs in it. My favorite wings in Pittsburgh! I've been coming to the WPT since it was in Shadyside and have yet to find wings that top theirs. The buffalo sauce is just the right spice level and nice and vinegary. The wings are crispy. They don't skip on the sauce either so definitely want some napkins. Additionally, the fries are always crispy + well seasoned, and the ranch is great for dipping both wings and fries. This is a casual place and most of the time, you seat yourself. No complaints on service, I've always found servers were attentive and this time is no different. WPT does get a little loud (touchtunes music) if you go later on a weekend. If I could put a negative review I would. Their bouncer belongs in prison. He physically assaulted half of the people in our group, and I think he was on drugs. If we were not with friends from out of town, I would have called the police. He grabbed friends by the neck, shoved us, accused people in my party of touching him when we were 5+ feet away. They're known for their wings, but every single wing sauce I've tried tastes exactly the same, because they dump celery salt in all of them. Seriously. Buffalo wing sauce doesn't have celery salt. Bbq sauce doesn't have celery salt. Well, they do at this place. It's gross. So bitter and salty. It's a real shame, the wings are crispy and well made, it's just the sauces that are awful. The burgers taste like the patty went straight from Sysco's freezers to the grill. Look, this place is definitely a local favorite, so you can probably ignore the opinions of this guy right here, but I think it's highly overrated. Get a beer when they have specials going on, but go anywhere else for food. Take seriously all the reviews that mention hostility to customers. They once served me wings that were completely inedible. When I mentioned this to the bartender, he took them away and still charged me for them anyway. That's not how you treat customers. I don't expect people to bend over backwards for me, but when I can't even eat the meal I'm being served, a good restaurant or tavern will replace or refund, especially if you haven't had more than a bite. They've moved from Shadyside to Lawrenceville, however the food is somehow worse. Lawrenceville needs a good classic PGH bar like this, but unfortunately, the wings (which is what they are known for) were pretty bad. I ordered 6 medium and 6 kitchen sink. I never send food back, but the wings I got were dried out and COLD - like the bone was literally cold. They are understaffed, so it was difficult to flag a waitress down. Sent them back and they quickly came back with another round... which somehow also weren't hot, but at least not cold. The kitchen sink sauce is what they recommend and it sucked. The wings were drowning in sauce, but clearly not tossed in the sauce. The wings are pretty cheap, but there are so many better places for wings in the city. As with anything in Pittsburgh, it is 100% a Steelers/Penguins/Pirates bar, so of the game is on, you can bet a pepperoni roll they will have it on. The main bartender is known as "Boss" and is really a barkeep in every sense of the word. Very personable and overall a good dude. The food here is some of the best bar food I've had in Pitt. Their wings are probabaly their bestseller, and with a myriad of flavors and sauces to choose from. The boneless wings are hand breaded, and are delicious as well. After going through the other reviews listed for this place I can see that a majority of people seem to focus on the 'Tavern' part. But if you are like me and you are looking for a place to get lunch in Shadyside, you need to reconsider the name and take a venture in here. While in Shadyside I attempted to stop at several other locations prior to coming here, each of those places were not open for the lunch hour, or if they were to open it was for a late lunch which I did not have time for. After being deterred by the other establishments I stumbled upon William Penn Tavern. I had been here before for a drink with friends years ago and scoffed at the idea of getting lunch here. I should smack myself for thinking that because the lunch I ended up having was twice the amount of food compared to other establishments. The menu isn't lengthy at all, in fact it is one of the smallest menus I have come across in a while. Looking at it I just thought I would get a small amount of food that would hold me over until later in the day. After glancing over the menu I had set in mind what I wanted. When the bartender came back to me I gave my order and waited. I ordered the Inadequacy Dog with cheese and some tots. While waiting for my order to be prepared I finally took a look around the interior to take it all in. Surprisingly there is a lot of natural light in here, chalk that up to the huge skylight located right over the bar. Sports paraphernalia lines every inch of this place, I especially like the bobble-heads that are in abundance here. Sports flags, jerseys, etc. are everywhere. If that that catch your eye, let your ears do the exploring here. Several televisions broadcasting various programs or just listen to the banter that takes place between the employees and frequent patrons. With the delivery of my food I was brought back to reality and thought to myself that my eyes were bigger than my stomach. The tots were plentiful. Nice and crispy with each bite you take and unlike some places they do not stick to each other causing the loss of some amazing potato morsels. Then when I finally noticed the Inadequacy Dog, what I can say about this is that the only thing that inadequate about this is how hungry you thought you were. This is probably one of the most massive hot dogs I have ever seen. The menu describes it as a foot-long hot dog, what the menu leaves out is the fact that this hot dog is about double the size around than most foot-longs you come across. I had to cut this dog into smaller bites. Not only that, but I took half of the hot dog and a good portion of the tots with me and had that as my dinner later in the day.
