Stopped in as part of bar hopping for St. Patrick's Day festivities on the South Side. I had never been to Rugger's before, but the atmosphere was lively. They had some festive decor up for the celebrations as well. I did not get to try any food this visit, but would like to return to try in the future. Was hoping to try the monthly drink special, but they were out at the time I tried to order. I had a pint of Guinness instead, which you can't go wrong with for the holiday. The service received was adequate for what I ordered. Hope to return when the place is less busy to try more of the menu and drinks, but overall had a positive first experience! read more

Great place! We're from out of the area and were looking for a place that offered vegetarian/vegan food and good beer. So glad we stopped in. We both had the vegan seitan rib eye and a few beers. You order at the bar and then the food is brought out to you. I wish we lived closer so we could try more things off of the menu. The prices were amazing and the staff was so friendly. We didn't realize when we stopped in, but it was their first day opening the kichen back up after I believe doing a kitchen remodel. You could hear the buzz from other patrons about how excited they were to be back and I can totally understand why. read more

If you ever thought to yourself, "this burger could use a grilled cheese," "this grilled cheese could use a burger" or never thought any of those in your life but love GOUD cheesy food- this one is for you. Ruggers knows the CTS (cheese to sando) ratio and went above and beyond the call of duty. The burg patty was flavorful itself and held its own up next to the overflowing cheese mountain that surrounded it. The fries were a perfectly salted addition to the sando. Man I'm sad all I have is this blurry pic but this felt like the quintessential pittsburgh bar! The vibes were pretty good in here early on a Friday night, not too busy but not quiet at all either. The staff was real nice and they had really fun Halloween decor. The body bag cracked me up. They have pudding shots which were really good and reminded me of dirt and worms you usually get as a Halloween dessert. The fries here are pretty good too. I visited this place twice while in Pittsburg. I came during the happy hour and got me a few well drinks and a liquid marijuana as well as some fried pickles. The bartender was friendly and bubble and it was chill vibe in there. Prices were cheap and I really liked that: I came back later that night for a few drinks but that bartender was bland. Ruggers is a gem I wish I'd found sooner. I actually lived across from them for 3 years and had only been one time for a trivia night. If there's one thing that truly stood out to me, it's how many veg options their menu has. It's hard to find vegan wings, even in a city like Pittsburgh. My friend and I split garlic parm, honey mustard, and melting pot seitan wings. Big, juicy, and flavorful=exactly what we wanted. This local bar sits back off of Carson next to the Birmingham Bridge. It's your perfect local dive and for the holidays they transform it into a yinzer wonderland. The decor is fun and they have lots of holiday and regular drink specials. We didn't eat while we were there, but all the food that came from the kitchen looked delicious. we don't live here, only passing through so we went and picked up food (didn't eat in) and we ordered seitan wings, fries and a deluxe burger with pickle chips on the side. the fries we will not touch as they are soggy and weird textured? the seitan wings aren't very good.. the gold black sauce is ok though. thank god we bought cans of beer, because honestly that's the only way we're finishing the food we paid for. the pickle chips are horridddd. my husband said his burger is just "ok" we only went here cause they were the only vegan option open late at night. the bartender seemed annoyed with us for whatever reason in the very small time we were in there. but i'd rather not eat than pay for food like this. only giving an extra star for the decent vegan options. read more

I ordered the setian wings with garlic parm and Serrano scotch Bonnet sauce they let me choose two different sauces which was nice. I met a friend for lunch today to try out this pub. The right side is the bar as you enter and the left side has all high top seating. The menu is very basic and I learned they have daily specials. On Tuesday which was the day of our visit all burgers were half off. This place has vegan options as well including a vegan burger. You can also make your own burger and add sides to it. An upcharge is based on the number of sides you select. Please note that if you have a groupon voucher you cannot combine it with the daily special. Both of us decided to have the deluxe hamburger with the works and pay the $.99 up charge for french fries. Sandwiches are served on Cellone's bread and are normally accompanied by pickle chips. The burger was huge-literally because it was 1/2 pounder and the fries were typical. If you are a fan of greasy burgers and fries then this is the place for you. I not sure how many napkins I went through but it was very good. We each had ice tea but for some reason it tasted extremely strong. It's not like the tea I am used to. Prices are very reasonable and the overall appearance is what one would expect at an evening pub establishment. We had good service and the meal was quite filling. Rugger's Pub is located on 22nd St near Wharton St on the Southside. From its location you get a nice view of the Birmingham bridge. If you are lucky to snag a spot there is free 2 hour parking on this section of 22nd St. Otherwise metered street parking is available on E Carson St. read more

It's hard to find vegan food in Pittsburgh, but Ruggers pub is a life saver for my vegan taco craving. Mondays are $2 tacos and I make sure I get some, they have delicious house made garbanzo beans patty used in their tacos or burger that is delicious or the black beans & banzo beans that is always fresh and tasty. Service is also great and fast with the staff. Shoutout to bartender Alex. They also have house made seitan wings that are delicious with a variety of dipping sauce to choose from, mines is the mix of all the vegan sauce mixed together... delicious. read more

Once you get past the chain influence of South Side Works, just about every place in the South Side has character--some good and some bad. Ruggers definitely landed on the side of good (thought not without qualification). The menu is larger than you might expect from a place of it's size: soup, salad, burgers, wraps. They even have a few vegetarian options (including a rather distinct veggie burger). The beer list is even better than than the menu. They don't have a huge number of taps, but what they have is almost entirely craft beer. They seem to keep something on tap from Great Lakes and East End, plus a few other regional brewers. They even tend to keep a fairly session-able craft brewed option--which tends to keep me happy. They also keep some bottles and cans in a half-sized cooler, but I've honestly never really looked into the list. The food was distinctive--well worth eating, but not particularly outstanding. This is the type of place you seek out for the atmosphere and staff more than the menu. The tiny little bar tends to be packed on the weekend, but during the week the Free WiFi makes for a great place to catch up on email over a beer. Keep in mind that Rugger's is a a smoking bar. That weeds out many, but I don't have too much trouble wading through the smoke. Weighing everything in balance, I do have to say that I'm a fan. read more

This review is way overdue. I absolutely love this place. Been a "regular" for about two years now. The food and drinks might be cheap but the quality is always top notch. I'd argue that it's hands down the best bar grub in the Burgh. Ima boozehound and they have $5-$6 beer+shot combos that make me stick around for a lil too long which I absolutely love. Great place for a beer and a sandwich. There is a large selection of beers, monthly and weekly specials,and what I believe is the best burger in Pittsburgh. The place is run by the Pittsburgh Rugby club so the food is "satisfying" (big and good), and the beer is cold and reasonable. The staff and patrons are friendly and it is so much more comfortable than getting jostled in some of the other Southside bars. read more

This is where we come when I want to drink too much. Don't judge me. It's Ruggers. Growing up on the south end of Pittsburgh but hating East Carson and the train wrecks that careen down it each night, Ruggers is a tiny haven of whiskey and cigarettes nestled by itself beside the Birmingham. The drinks are cheap, the food is surprisingly great (freak out about pickle chips), and they do fun stuff like trivia on Wednesdays and team Cards Against Humanity. If you're just going to piss about cigarette smoke, don't come here. Everyone smokes. Best case scenario, they have a patio in the back with picnic tables that don't require you to get emphysema. It's actually a nice, little patio. Regardless, Ruggers is worth the stop though. They have a huge draft list that always includes an Arsenal and seasonal Woodchuck for those wimps like me that aren't super into beer. They also do that whole cheap PBR pounder thing, but for a buck or two more, have Janice make you a nice lil' cocktail. There's usually a draft on special until it runs out too. The only real advice I can give on a negative is avoid Rugby nights.. unless you're into rude, super drunk Brits. Typically I'm not. Look, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Until I can get a bulleit rye for five bucks in the East End (ha!), I'm taking the bridge to 22nd. read more

My boyfriend and I found this place from Groupon. Thinking it would be a decent place to watch some Olympic games and cheap drinks, we went. We did not know what we were getting ourselves into!! THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! Great specials everyday, reasonably priced food and drink and the atmosphere was off the charts. The bartender was awesome and gave us all the info about specials each week and was very friendly. My boyfriend and I each had a burger, hands down best I've had in a while. Overall it was an experience I wasn't expecting to have but nothing short of awesome. We've been telling our friends about it ever since and we will probably be back on Monday for.....DOLLAR TACOS! What a brilliant place. It's an old school Pittsburgh bar with great (and cheap) food and drinks. Don't be put off if you aren't a sports bar fan. It's not an over the top 50 big screen TV place. It's low key sports. You can watch some European Rugby or Penguins Hockey and and strike up a conversation with someone that probably knows more about it than you. Or you can skip the sports and banter with friends. And while am not a vegetarian or vegan, would emphasize to those who are that half the menu are those things. And if you aren't, can recommend the Buffalo Chicken and Signature Half Pound Burger (done Pittsburgh rare...), both with pickel chips. Go there. Have fun. read more

Excellent service!! This was our first stop after a long 7 hours on the road. It's an authentic gritty rugger southie bar. People were friendly and national rugby was streaming. They had a surprisingly vast variety of beers and ciders local and otherwise. We ordered the Ruben -- warning it's a triple decker unless you ask for something different. Ruggers Pub is a small bar off of East Carson Street, which means it is usually devoid of the general annoying bar patrons. While it is a rugby bar, it's far from elitist or limited. The bar not only has regular drink specials, but it also has an entire menu of food available. Huge sandwiches and your general fried bar food. The prices are slightly higher than some dive bars, but the quality of food is also better than I've experienced in most places. The staff is not only friendly but freaking hilarious. The music is loud. The beer is plenty. I do have to warn though, rugby season is starting and this means an influx of rugby fans in the bar. read more

I can report this is a 99.9% bro-free bar. There always seems to be way more guys than girls, but instead of the guys decked out in von dutch most seem to have not showered in a few days, and are down to have a good time. Rugger's 1/2 price "pick your own burger" night on Tuesday is awesome and cheap. And they have a great selection of ever-changing beers on tap (I like Erie Railbender mostly and it's on special on Tuesday's). Janice is the best bartender in town and she's there most nights. Jukebox is awesomely filled with punk rock, emo, metal, rock, and other music your mom probably doesnt listen to now. It's really the only bar I like to go to aside from Gooski's.
