When we finally got the attention of a wait person, they offered us water but then disappeared into the back for another 5 minutes. It has been pretty crowded when we have gone and seating is fairly limited. Service has always been pretty good, with quick, friendly service. The specialty is gourmet grilled cheese. I have had smack Yo Mama and Chicken Los Hermanos. Sandwiches come with homemade chips and tomato soup. Members of my family have gotten wings, salads, and Mac n cheese. Yum! This was my first time eating at The Yard. I will definitely be returning. I got The It's Always Cheesy in Philadelphia grilled cheese. It's a classic Philly Cheese steak on brioche bread. It came with a side of homemade chips and tomato soup. I also ordered a side of Mac n Cheese. Wow! The food was delicious! I also tried a cocktail, which was soo good! Had a great time this weekend! My husband got to try a lot of great local beers on tap for a good price. I loved the Smack Yo Mama grilled cheese. Our server Dani was so personable and funny. The restaurant was surprisingly slow for a Saturday evening. We were checked on consistently by Dani and the manager even stopped at our table to chat and check in. A bit of a let down. I was hoping for some very delicious sandwiches. They are supposed to serve sort of thing you want when craving comfort food. But, I found these 'gourmet' sandwiches to not only be not worth the price, but also mediocre compared to average sandwiches. I ordered the Smack Yo Mama grilled cheese sandwich and the Cuz We Got High mini dessert. I got to choose 2 sides with the sandwich. This was the grilled cheese and the chips. The chips were probably my favorite part of this meal. They were super crispy and delicious. Nice portion as well. And, super salty (but I still liked it). The tomato soup was super underwhelming. It wasn't even like soup. It had the consistency of a watery dip more than a soup. And the portion they gave was so thin that it functioned less like a soup and more like just a dip. It wasn't that flavorful either. The actual sandwich itself was decent. Definitely not worth the money if you're craving good comfort food and just that, nothing more, but it wasn't bad. The chicken was sweet and pretty tasty. A little dry but not bad. Cheese was okay and the bread was nothing special at all. Pretty underwhelming. The dipping sauce, although the container was small, was actually quite tasty and cheesy. So, since the cheese they used in the sandwich was pretty flavorless, this helped. I've seen so many rave reviews for their dessert but I personally didn't like it that much. It was probably the second best thing I tried, and it is fairly priced, but just not that good. Not much Nutella and the banana just did not go very well with the nutella. It's somewhat tasty but rich and personally not my kind of dessert. The marshmallow fluff was nice, and they gave me a lot of it, but it's just marshmallow fluff. All in all, I was pretty disappointed with this place. I really thought I could have gotten a great meal from here, but it turned out to be underwhelming. The sandwiches are overpriced and not the best, and so is everything else I tried (except the chips and maybe the dessert since it was pretty cheap). My go to sandwich is the Lafferty, Daniel, which is basically a chicken parm grilled cheese. I think the soup has gone down in quality over the years, as it's been much thinner the last few times I've had it. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to the waffle fries. Chips are included. You'd be surprised to learn it's not a bad place to eat with younger kids. The children's menu has kid staples like burgers, grilled cheese (of course), chicken and corn dogs. Sometimes places try to give kids garbage, but the kids burger and corn dog were pretty solid. Smack Yo Mama 3/10. Bread was like it was toasted, not like made on a flat top like actual grilled cheese. It was super hard I couldn't even bite it so I took it apart and ate the inside with a fork. It was just regularly cut bacon. Cheddar, Smoked Gouda added a slight good flavor, but still not super cheesy. Tomato Soup 10/10. Good flavor, creamy, and seasoned well. I've been to several locations of The Yard, and they're all always crowded but service is great. The food is great too. The popular item here are the massive grilled cheese sandwiches. Everyone in Pittsburgh has probably tried it at least twice I ordered the smack yo mama sandwich with pulled BBQ chicken, onion strings, smothered cheddar cheese and beer cheese - all on toasted bread. So sorry to give a bad review because the food is amazing!!! When we arrived. It was so cold in there that the Hostess had on a beanie and a winter coat. We froze the entire entire time we sat there. When going to the bathroom you pass a room or office of some sort where 10 to 15 workers were sitting in there yelling and laughing. There was maybe five tables in the whole place with probably at least 15 people on staff working. Super unprofessional. Food was excellent--I had the always sunny in Philadelphia grilled cheese for $15.99 and I was very happy it came out looking great and even overflowing with meat and toppings! I'm always a sucker for waffle cut sweet potato fries, but they were a tad overdone, but I still at them anyways. Service could have been slightly better--got seated immediately after walking in, but it took about 5-10 minutes for anyone to greet us(but waters were brought with that initial visit, which was a plus). Our waitress was very happy and friendly. We put food In immediately since we had time to look, and food came out(by a food runner I'm assuming because it wasn't our waitress)pretty fast. Our friend had an issue with his side, but the food runner quickly fixed that and even after all that, it took our waitress some time to come check on us the first time since food being delivered to see if we needed anything. We needed some sauces and another soup cup because when we sent back our friend's food for his side to be fixed, it was forgotten in the kitchen, but she brought everything pretty quick. Once we were about half way through our meal, my fiancé ran out of water and he typically won't continue to eat until he has another water due to health reasons. So we looked around so he could get another one and noticed our waitress casually talking to another girl across the restaurant and she wasn't facing us for us to flag her down. This went on for about 5-10 minutes and then she saw us looking around for her and brought him another water. It then took awhile for her to come back to check if we needed boxes, as she was talking to the other girl again and she didn't even ask how the checks were being separated until after the boxes were brought back, which could have been done in one trip if she would have asked when asking for boxes. Checks were then dropped off, and once again, several minutes passed until she came back to run our card/cash. We understand we aren't her only table(she looked to have maybe 3-4?), but in the time she took to talk to her friend, she could have been checking on her tables. Overall, she was VERY nice and even remembered our orders by memory, BUT wasn't the fastest and seemed to be distracted at times. That WILL NOT stop us from coming back or from having her as our waitress. We loved our food and time there, we just wished things were a bit faster and less distractions. Lastly, our group wishes it wasn't so crammed in there. We all felt like we were sitting right with the strangers eating on both sides of us, it was that close. Tucked away above the street level, an innocuous door takes you upstairs to a surprisingly expansive gastropub. The Yard has drink specials every day, an expansive beer list, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Oh, do they have grilled cheese sandwiches. More than a quarter of the menu is built around the (non-traditional) staple. Each one comes with a small dish of light tomato soup and chips. You can sub tator-tots for a little extra, and you should. They dip well in the soup. Thank me later. The highlight of our trip was, for me, the "Pierogis, an 'at" grilled cheese, which features cheddar, goudda, kielbasa, fried Pierogis (really), and saurkraut. It was wonderousluly difficult to eat. The Yard also has a gluten free menu, and an allergy protocol for changing gloves with careful handling. I could not confirm totally separate prep areas, but they do have dedicated fryers, per our server. The poutine looked excellent. Overall, everyone at our table went away full and happy. It was a grilled cheese with fried eggs and bacon. I wish I would have specific the eggs cooked over medium as I like some run, but it was still very good.
