My wife and I stopped in for the first time last night. We arrived around 7:30 and were seated immediately. The place was quite crowded. The service was excellent as was the food. I had the stuffed poblanos and my wife had the chicken and beef fajitas. Let me just say that I will be back. I've tried most of the Mexican restaurants in Longview and to me, this was my favorite experience thus far. Prices are very reasonable as well. Win, win all around! As a Longview native, this is my all time favorite Mexican restaurant. I no longer reside in the area, but anytime I'm in town visiting family, this is my go to place! The salsa has the perfect amount of heat packed with great flavor. They are great at keeping the refills coming. Their white queso is so yummy and back when I ate dairy, I would order chicken enchiladas with it on top. Now, since I'm older and of course my metabolism is slower, I order the chicken fajitas. The meat is flavored great. Everything I've tried over the years has been delicious! I can't wait to come home for Christmas and eat my fave Mexican food again! read more

Queso, where do I start? The Queso Blanco is awesome & served to every table with chips & salsa. So good I can't really remember the salsa. Great home-made tortillas, too! I got a combo plate with beef & cheese enchiladas with Queso on top. Really good. My friend/host got a grilled chicken fajita salad and the chicken was great! Lunches- Stop in here occasionally. Can't think of a time I didn't enjoy the food or service. The white Queso is pretty darn good. Chips are always warm and fresh. I've only ever been to two although I do not know how many stores they have. I'd visit more if they were closer to where I work. Absolutely one of my favorite places in East Texas. The servers are nothing but attentive and the food is amazing (try the acapolco cheesesteak!). And if you're up for a margarita, they have the best in the state. And in general, I prefer on the rocks but here the frozen is seven million times better! PS. They have a man serenading people on the weekends. That alone is worth the visit. read more

My family and I had a satisfying first experience at El Sombrero tonight and will definitely be returning. There was virtually no wait on a Friday night. It's a fun atmosphere with unique, flavorful food. Loved the decor; there is plenty of visual stimulation while you wait for your food. It was FREEZING in here. I am usually warm-natured and I was wearing a hoodie, and I was cold to the point of being uncomfortable. We had no complaints about the service and were well taken care of. I'm a fan of the salsa, and love that it had such a strong cilantro flavor. The chicken fajita quesadilla was a bit greasy, but still extremely savory and stuffed with bell peppers, which I love. She pointed to our table and we sat ourselves. No menus. We sat for about 10 minutes without being greeted. The server of the table next to is kept looking at us but said nothing. Service was decent. I ordered the kid meal early so it would be out in time to keep the kid busy. About 8 minutes later, we ordered ours. Our meals came out in less than 3 minutes, were cold and chewy and her food didn't come out until after ours did and it was scalding hot. I like fresh, but the fries on the kid's meal were actually bubbling from the hot grease. By the time we got her food to cool down, she was already full from eating our cold food. Cold fajitas. Cold papa nachos. No refills offered. No check back to see if it was edible. I'm a server so I try to be patient and know sometimes you just can't help it so I left a good tip but no excuse for the quality of food. Ended up taking all of it home to warm up. Used to be really good, not sure what's been happening the last couple of years. The food was lukewarm and very basic and my waiter came by once. Thanks goodness for the chips and salsa. They were good. El Sombrero also charges 4% of your total to use your debit or credit card. Overall great place. I go there weekly just for chips and salsa. The food in general is good but not not outstanding when compared to five star Mexican resteraunts. The salsa on the other hand is perhaps the best I have EVER had. In general the service is spotty. Some days it is great. However on three occasions I have been there on slow mid day nights and waited for 30 minutes or more after ordering for our food. One time they admitted to totally forgetting about us after 35 minutes and wanted retake our order. I was charged for a extra drink I didn't have and at $20 a pop ... don't make no sense to me how it cost $86 for an order of beef and bean nachos, one Papa nachos and 2 top shelf margaritas and a glass of water. I have a message the manager asked him to pull security cameras up to look for his self to see what I had drink, he has not replied to me so I will no longer be stepping foot in this place again !! 1st time visit. I dont come to Longview often so I went out on a limb with El Sombrero. Solid Tex-Mex food, I really enjoyed the Thursday special, $5 Margaritas/ $2 Import Bottles. I ordered the Speedy Gonzalez lunch special, enchilada, taco and rice; for $6 it was good. My boyfriend ordered the Texas Fajitas, chicken, steak and shrimp. Everything had good flavor. Our waiter was very attentive but it seemed he got very busy and we honestly only saw him once after we ordered, I believe he was covering the bar for another waiter. Had the fajitas served on regular plate and had to wait 4 and a half minutes for them to bring the tortillas wrapped in foil. Everything was cold by the time I could eat. The one in Hallsville is a favorite, I haven't tried the one in Longview, but I would assume it is just as good. Great food, moderate prices. It is a medium size restaurant, it is not a little cafe, but it is not to loud either, it has a nice family atmosphere. read more

Had a fairly large table coming in for a get together, 9-10 people. We were seated quickly and drinks were ordered immediately. After a couple minutes we ordered our food and nibbled chips and salsa. Our food arrived after a short wait and it was fantastic as usual. We love the Texas style Sal's. The only reason this review is four stars instead of five... once we got our food, our server disappeared. Several people at our table ran out of our drinks and we had to flag down another server to find him for refills. No chips refilled, nor salsa. Then my nephew spilled his drink across the table; again, no server in sight. We used all our napkins to contain it and my niece relocated to the other side of the table so she could continue her dinner. When our checks were brought, we pointed out the spill and he just nodded and left again. He never even brought more napkins or a towel! What? We'll come back, we always do because the food is great! But please remind your servers to check on their tables a little more often! read more

Started eating here the second week they opened and before they added new locations or expanded. Really top-notch Mexican food without the Tex in front. But thus last several times I went the service ... even from people who have been there from the start ... has sucked. Had a bad experience. Found some long strand of mystery material in our queso(plastic?). The waiter wasn't friendly or helpful-he bordered on plain rude. We asked for quacamole and taco meat in our queso and he said we could get it but it "wouldn't look good." Um, so many Tex-mex places offer this dish as "queso compuesto" and it looks and tastes great. We were charged for both a queso and the quacamole totaling 9 bucks. All we had wanted was a small scoop of guac and taco meat in the queso. They need to get with it. My other complaint is that they don't know what quesadilla is. We were served an overstuffed taco, not a quesadilla. Too much meat, not enough cheese, and they only use one tortilla and fold it in half. The shrimp was gross. The fajita meat is cheap taqueria quality. I'll pass on this place from now on. read more

Although the food is pretty good here and the _queso blanco_ is GREAT, the service needs improvement!! It needs a LOT of improvement!! Today, I paid my bill after lunch and then went back to my table to get a doggie bag and my keys. I made the mistake of walking out a door marked "EXIT." It had NOT been labeled as "Emergency Exit." A few steps outside the door, I was accosted outside by a waiter who thought I had not paid my bill. He tried to apologize when I told him that I had indeed paid the bill.. In order to CLARIFY the matter and make things perfectly clear and transparent, I insisted on bringing us both back inside to see the cashier. The cashier indeed verified that I had paid the bill just a few minutes before. Because the waiter took it upon himself to accost me, I believed it was important to clarify the matter with BOTH him and the cashier. So I guess I just had to pay the bill ONCE to these greedy fools.....I'm sure they would have been happy to see me pay TWICE for the same order!!!!!!! I asked to speak with the manager about being a paying customer accused of walking-out. I was informed that the manager had JUST stepped out the door.....this was around 1:15 pm. Let me just say that the second exit needs to be marked EMERGENCY EXIT so that ppl don't walk out using that door. Despite pretty good food, I will NOT be patronizing this restaurant again. The bottom line is: If you question my honesty, I will question YOUR honesty. Once again, IF YOU QUESTION MY HONESTY AFTER I HAVE PAID MY BILL AND LEFT YOU A 15% TIP, i WILL QUESTION YOUR HONESTY. I'm a huge fan of Tex Mex and Longview has several good choices but this isn't one of them. Don't get me wrong. The chips and hot sauce were really good, but I found the meal I ordered to be bland. Also, I found the employees at the front counter to be useless and unhelpful. They couldn't be bothered taking the time to show me to my table I know its a small place but you should still do your job and half a## it. The waiter I had was OK but when I arrived and left I was treated as if they could care whether or not I was there....and that's fine because I don't think I will return and as for this famous white cheese stuff.....I found it bland too. Was taken here by a friend from Longveiw who always insists that this is the BEST MEXICAN food in all of Texas...despite my argument that all small towns in TX have a little Mexican place, and they're all the same. Needless to say, this place did have that small town mex place feel, but it did have some more unique menu items - we had AMAZING white queso to start and the Acapulco Cheese-Steak based on his recommendation.
