First, I want to talk about the horrible experience we had tonight. We got seated at 7:20 PM, which seemed great at first because we only waited about 10 minutes for a table... or so I thought. It took 50 minutes just to get our appetizers and the margaritas we ordered. After that, the wait only got worse. At 9:10 PM, we finally received 3 out of the 4 dishes we ordered. We didn't want our food to get cold, so we went ahead and started eating. We actually finished our meals before the last dish even came out -- and then it suddenly showed up after we were already done. Waiting that long for food, getting meals at completely different times, and having such slow service made this a really frustrating experience. I'm beyond disappointed. The only good part of the night was thinking the short wait for a table meant we'd have a good evening... but that definitely wasn't the case. Really hoping this was just a bad night, but this experience makes it hard to want to come back. read more

We're big fans of carnitas, and for years our favorite was Mercado Juarez in Arlington, Texas--we hadn't found anything that even came close after moving to East Texas five years ago. That changed tonight. We decided to try El Sombrero, and the carnitas were absolutely outstanding--honestly, even better than Mercado Juarez! The flavor, tenderness, and overall quality were just amazing. We can't say enough good things about this place. I would definitely try this restaurant again, but actually go inside and sit down. This was the first time I ever saw a drive thru Mexican restaurant which is a great idea...but you need to make sure that you check your order before leaving out. And I think that is the issue with most drive there's because 80% of the times something either will be missing or messed up. And once you leave out most of us including myself will not go back to the restaurant to get what was missing or messed up. So my order was a few different tacos and what I really loved was that you could order margaritas to go. When I got home unfortunately there was no cheeses that's was suppose to have been included. I know traditionally cheese really is not put on tacos...but this is Tex-Mex and I wanted that cheese. Especially since I am a cheese lover. This to me was not a chili relleno, chalupa or burrito. There was one tiny one inch piece of pepper and the rest ground beef and cheese sauce that's supposed to be a relleno.? Burrito was a flour enchilada all ground beef and nothing else and the enchilada had dry tough chicken and nothing else. This is a very nice looking restaurant with reasonably good service and food. BUT it is very very expensive for what you get. My father ordered 3 beef enchiladas with rice - $19. Wow. That is like $0.30 of rice and about $1.50 of materials for the enchilada. I had a "taco salad" - $18. This is Mexican food, and this is not like Papacitos where you can order quail or ribs and something exotic. Just standard Mexican food, which honestly about 10 ingredients arranged into different forms. My recommendation, save your money and go to another location. One exception... they have a very nice bar area and if you wanted to get drinks, watch sports, and can get past the crazy high prices, this might be a good place. Rude staff, got the 9$ half order of chicken cheese nachos with beans and bill was 30$, tried to add a fee of 14$ for the nachos and when I asked server about it she was very rude and I ended up paying 20$ still somehow. As we pulled into the parking lot it was packed. Decided to go in and see how long of a wait for a table of 5. We could sit your right away. We felt guilty because we got a table immediately even though there were people sitting and waiting. As we went to the table, I noticed that the whole area was full of tables with lots of people. Tabletops of six to eight people. We were seated and within minutes our server came to out table to take drink orders and if we were ready to order our food we could do that to. Drinks were ordered, water, water, coke, and frozen margarita and margarita on the rocks. Water and coke were delivered pretty promptly. The drinks took a bit longer. When they did arrive, they were in these small plastic cups about 10 ounces. FIL wanted to know if that was a sample. Chips and salsa came, each of us got our own salsa bowl. FIL said his was spicy and he added honey to it but did not like it! Salsa was ok nothing special about it. I love it when the salsa is hot and the chips are also hot. Food orders were taken, one taco salad, taco carnitas, kids chicken strips with rice, fajita salad with steak, and a steak quesadilla. Food arrived pretty quickly and looked delicious. no complaints about the carnitas, steak quesadilla, or the chicken strips with rice. Taco salad was supposed to come with steak but came with ground beef. Hubby got thru half and he said he could not eat anymore. My salad came with ranch dressing, (don't like ranch) but ok I'll try it. Fajita steak was fatty, and I had to spit out most of it. (Sorry) Hubby said the piece he tried was good. So I gave him the rest of the meat and had lettuce, and tomato for dinner with ranch dressing. I stopped and did not finish it. All in all, I have to give it to the server because he was handling lots of large tabletops and wasn't writing anything down. He remembered everything and it was impressive. So, if he made a mistake or two, I gave him some slack. I would have written everything down. Ending, don't know what all the fuss is about this place. It is always crowded even when it was off of Judson. I understand this new place is bigger to handle the crowds. But we won't be in that crowd. It's loud can't hear the music except in the restrooms. We live in Las Vegas, and traveled to Texas and decided to eat here due to glowing reviews and word of mouth from the locals here in Longview. The restaurant was NOT busy by any means. We arrived around 2PM. When we sat down, we weren't greeted. We were met with "what can I get y'all to drink." We ordered two margaritas, however was not offered water or brought water. We had to ask for silverware, plates, and napkins. We ran out of tortilla chips and were never offered a refill. The server hovered over us while we were trying to pay with cash, to see how much we were going to tip her. The food and ambiance in this restaurant were great and we have no complaints. I always eat Mexican food while in Texas. It's my experience that Texas has the most consistently good Mexican food as anywhere with Santa Fe NM but that's another story. Based upon recommendations from the locals, I chose El Sombrero. It was good. But not great. Chips & salsa were fresh, white queso was fine. I ordered the Burrito Locos and it was huge!! Overall the food was decent. Service was a bit lacking. Attitude was fine they were just not very attentive. Overall pretty good. Nothing special in my opinion. Service was good but we were disappointed with the food. This place was highly recommended for its food. My husband's burrito was extremely dry. He ordered shredded beef and it was more like beef jerky. The tortilla was very dry and cracked. My burrito was supposed to have their queso sauce but instead they put red sauce. The name carried me in. I've had some pretty nice experiences with this particular restaurant in other locations. We were immediately seated when we arrived. That was awesome. We ordered quickly and received our dishes in a timely manner. We experienced a few delays. We didn't receive silverware and the proper condiments to accompany our dishes. We made contact with our server several times requesting these items. We weren't successful. Our server's attention was focused on a nearby table. The restaurant was extremely empty, so the staff to customer ratio wasn't an issue. When we finally received attention from another employee walking by we were able to get those items. Since we had someone's attention we also requested refills and additional napkins. The server noticed we were being assisted by someone else and didn't return until it was time for the bill to be settled. We ended up taking the majority of it home, so that we could eat it at the proper temperature. The food was definitely yummy. The service could have definitely been better. read more

Dug around in the beans a bit looking for it but nope, it wasn't there! I was shocked! Tried to call them a few times but couldn't get through before leaving for work. That may be one of the worst examples of service I've seen in a Mexican restaurant. First off, the handicapped walkway was closed off, and my mother, who needs to use it, was not able to. Secondly, the service was so slow, to the point that we waited 15 minutes for someone to come and take our drink orders. The longer we had to wait, the more frustrated we got, because all of us hadn't eaten anything this afternoon. I realize the restaurant was packed, but you can be more efficient than that. I saw the lobby cleaning workers being more efficient at their jobs than the waiters were, and one customer from another table got a to-go box for his order, because he didn't want to have to wait for the waiters to bring it to him. Thirdly, all the waiters were so focused on clanging their bells that hurt our ears for the birthday parties that were right next to us, that my dad didn't bother to order anything. When the waiters finally did get to us, the service was like a car wash. In, out and no emotion or conversation whatsoever about it. The steak I got on my tacos de asada was chewy, and the refried beans tasted of Cajun seasoning. Who does that in a Mexican restaurant?? We had to wait equally as long as our drink orders to get the check. To make matters the worst they could possibly be, we were charged 4% extra just for using a basic credit card, for an order of tacos de asada and an extra taco with beans that my mom got. The waiter didn't bother to ask the manager about it or anything. She just shrugged her shoulders, as if that's what El Sombrero trains you to do. That was the last straw, and as soon as the ticket was finally paid, we walked out the door immediately, and we will not be back under any circumstances. read more

I had a wonderful experience from the moment I was greeted at the door. Made me feel right at home. Waited was very friendly and provided excellent service. All of the staff was friendly and I did talk to almost everyone as my friend and I tried to become the first people to ever finish their 10 lb El Gigante burrito. That was stuffed with delicious, seasoned meat and was incredible. Then we decided to have a big, Texas sized dessert . I can't wait to give them another try, unfortunately they are in TX and I live in PA, but next time through there is no way I am not stopping in. You should too. Very disappointed with the food for how much they're charging. I ordered fajita enchiladas (it's only two) w/ beans and rice and it was 19. The tortilla was soggy and gross, I only ate 1. I think this place is only hyped about their drinks and happy hour, so if you want to drink then go for it, but come here and eat with the fam, don't waist your money.
