Wow, this place has great Tex-Mex people. I just had the best chile relleno I have ever had. The fajitas kicked ass too. The service is great. I could not believe how fast my food came out of the kitchen. It's like their cooks are clairvoyant. 2 minutes after ordering it was on our table screaming hot. Love El Sombrero and always try to go when I'm in town. Great white cheese queso and really everything on the menu is good.

We prefer the other location in Kilgore but the White Queso is to die for and over all it's delicious with a great ambiance.

I would give this place 5 stars based on the food. But the service deserves a 1. Half of our tables orders were wrong and they rarely came back to check on us. So if you don't care about service, then I highly recommend. Sangria Margarita was yummiest!!! read more

Found this on yelp there was one complainer...and let me tell you I'm glad we ignored them. Let me tell you don't let the outside of this pace fool you. It much larger and nicer inside. You will not be disappointed. The white queso is just as good as everyone says! Salsa was great and I'm a big salsa critic. The fresh cilantro just shows me that someone loves food in there somewhere. The service as impeccable. As soon as my salsa got low this young man (let's call him the salsa genie) was there to fill is right up. And for them to have an extensive vegetarian selection put them up the scale in my book. Tacos were really good, the meat was well seasoned. Really loved how prompt the chip service was, we never had to wait for another bowl. One thing I read in a few reviews was that the queso blanco was really good. My brother and shared the queso and were disappointed. Went here with my wife and both ordered the #3 combo plate. Service was great (why the 2 stars) - food was not. The tacos were prefab shells, hamburger, some lettuce shreds and shredded white (American?) cheese. Enchilada was tortilla, hamburger and sauce. My red sauce tasted like Chef Boyardee spaghetti sauce. Rellenos were unrecognizable ground meat/bean patties topped with the aforementioned white cheese and broiled. I quit eating here several years ago when my health and food choices changed. But I recently returned with my family and... wow! The restaurant is about 3 times the size it was last time. It is clean, busy, efficient, and the food is good. They will even make you a very good vegetarian quesadilla and charge the lunch menu piece at night. Chips and salsa are great. Tortillas cost, but they are carefully wrapped and tasty. I don't eat the gloppy stuff, but everyone assures me it is still as good as it ever was (very good), especially the white queso. Just before you realize you might need some hot sauce or chips, more magically appear. Drink cup half full? Here's another one. Considering I just don't eat Mexican food on a regular basis and basically dread going to a Mexican food restaurant because I usually can't find anything healthy to eat, you would be surprised that I find nothing to criticize about the food here. It is really good food and the portions are such that we always have some leftovers for later. I got ahead of my normal observations. The parking is ample. The restaurant is clean. Staff are SUPER efficient; they know when you are ready and when you need something. They don't let you sit and stare at your companions, waiting for help. I recognized two waiters from several years ago so there is alot of experience on the floor. While I am sure that part of the efficiency is directed at turnover, I haven't felt rushed, nor neglected, in several recent trips. Service is good. There are a few layers of people here and each of them pitch in to help the others. Everyone has a primary job but no one refuses to do anyone else's job. Service is very good. Don't practice your Spanish with the waiter unless you are very good. They speak Spanish. This is a good sign in an independent Mexican food restaurant. I think everyone there speaks Spanish and English. But say 'hola" and they will cheerfully talk Spanish so fast you'll realize how little you know, always with a smile and wink. El Sombrero is one of the few independent Longview restaurants that deserves, and receives, alot of attention from local customers. The good experiences and food here are CONSISTENT. I'm glad it is here and from the look of things it will be for a very long time. I don't know what giving five stars means. I guess that is a place that blows your socks off. For Longview this is a five star restaurant, but I go other places and still have my socks on, and I can think of some amazing places in other cities that are five stars in anyone's book. I love the food at El Sombrero. However, the service is horribly lacking. As I type, I am currently on hold with the restaurant because I'm trying to place a to go order. I've been on hold for ten minutes so far. I can hear everything going on at the front of the restaurant where the register is located. Also, the last time I went here, the waiter seemed annoyed us. We sat for for at least 10 minutes before he came to get our drink orders. When he came back to take our food order, he was sort of snippy. It made us very uncomfortable. He made it feel like we were somehow inconveniencing him. I may only go here again when I have a bit more patience and a very big hankering for their enchiladas. read more

Ate dinner here last night after craving Mexican food. There's a lot going on in the menu and it takes awhile to get through. I ended up ordering the fried chimichangas covered in queso, guac, and sour cream. The food was pretty good, and came out quickly. Portions are great, and I left stuffed. My wife ordered carne con hongos, and found the meat a little tough, and too salty for her taste. Service was decent. We were in town for the weekend and this is the first Mexican restaurant we've eaten at in Longview. Will likely try another place next time. read more

This place is amazing! The chips and salsa is like no other we get them to go frequently. The service is really good and the servers really get to know you here very personable. The only thing that the longview location has over the Kilgore location is homemade flour tortillas. The food qiality in longview is worse. The steak in the sombrero cheese steak was tough, they are stingy with the white queso, and service was fair. It took the waiter 20 minutes to get our ticket to us after we were already finished eating. Moral of the story, don't go for homemade tortillas, just go to Kilgore for much better food!! read more

I would give five stars but it is somewhat chaotic in the front part of the restaurant with people trying to pay and people waiting. It's not a pleasing area at all. Horrible service. Was seated and it took almost 10 minutes for the person who seated us to come back and get our drink orders and bring chips and salsa. I made eye contact with three different people, multiple times and they all chose to ignore my family and I. I was seated in the back of the restaurant because of having a child. Never got a refill, but my Hispanic husband did. The food was poor quality. This is the first time I've ever had issues with this restaurant and I'm highly disappointed. read more
