I'm going to be as accurate in this review as possible. If you are in a hurry, this restaurant is not for you. The service and service workers here are awful. A table of 9 was waiting to be sat and two tables were open to seat 2. It was just my girlfriend and I so we figured we could get one of the smaller tables because the party of 9 told us they were just waiting for a few tables to open up to accommodate their party size and that we could definitely go infront of them for a smaller table. The service workers were very rude to both me and my girlfriend when we asked about it and they insisted the larger party needed to be sat first. It took forever to get our food but I will say, when we did, it was the most outstanding Mexican food we'd ever had in the U.S. If you can get past the rudeness and you have the time, the food is worth it. As much as I'd like to give this restaurant 1 star because how poorly we were treated, I cannot. The chefs in the back know exactly what they are doing and I would walk over 2 miles of nails to eat it again. Terrible service, spectacular food. read more

We were craving mexican food after a week long of traveling the states and was told Jackson was the place to have it. I've heard so much about Jackson but this was my first time in town and I loved it. People were so nice. We stumbled upon this place after visiting Lucky's. Workers had recommended this place for Mexican food. They were right about one thing. All the mexicans were here. We were so excited to have tacos and tortillas! It did fall short of what we have back home (California), but it was better than nothing. We were not used to the style of food here, as we found it to be more Tex Mex. The molcajete is worth it! For $27 it's supposedly feeds up to 4 people but my father in law killed it by himself! I shared one with my bf along with 4 tacos. I did appreciate that they had hand made tortillas. It really makes the difference! They have fair prices for the this town, as other places are very overpriced. Service was quick and the waitresses were very attentive. read more

We decided to try this spot when our regular spot was closed. Sometimes a bit hesitant in trying new places, but by the time we finished our meal the place was packed with a line out the door. Down right possibly THE best Mexican food we have ever had. Being from Southern California we have our fair share! Delicious flavor, the food was (temp) hot, (I hate when my food arrives cold) and this nice little slice of carne asada came with. A bit spicy for me, I don't do spice well (but in this case didn't let that stop me, it was just so good); and my husband raved about how flavorful the food was and loved the spice. Definitely where the locals go. As a couple who eats out about 3x a week, and this being our second Summer in Jackson Hole - it's absolutely at the top of our dining repertoire. read more

$34 for a lunch for two including two Coronas! The food was fantastic! We had the beef burrito, cheese enchiladas, chips and guacamole and a side of sour cream. The chips were freshly fried and warm, so delicious. The guacamole had a little kick to it but not too much. The beef burrito was so flavorful! We will definitely be back for the quality food and amazing price point in Jackson. My only complaint is it is cold in the restaurant. We noticed all of the heat vents in the ceiling were covered with Saran Wrap. So not sure if the story there but it wouldn't keep us away from a future visit! read more

Went in alone awhile back and waited patiently to be seated, was watching while at least 3 groups of 2 or more that came in after me were seated. (Total of 30 minutes) Was quite clear to me that it was because I was white, and they didn't speak English so chose not to challenge themselves to communicate. They (hostess and servers) looked at me multiple times and acted like I didn't exist. As a local I WILL NOT be returning and am steering everyone away that I can. Best authentic Mexican food we have ever tasted. Tiny place next to Jackson Laundromat so you may be tempted to walk on by, don't. I had shrimp fajitas and my husband had several field different tacos ( beef, chicken and pork). Their flour tortillas are homemade and you can taste the difference. We were staying at the lodge next door and ate at the steakhouse our first night, second night we were tired and just wanted quick casual bite to eat. We each ordered carne asada tacos, they were out of pork already. They brought out chips and salsa. The chips were a thicker crunchy type chip, which were tasty. The crushed tomato based salsa was really good. It was our favorite. Bright, fresh tasting, and a little spicy. When the tacos came, our nice server brought out the green and orange hot sauce. She warned us that the orange one was really spicy, so we only did a quick taste. It was very hot-hotter than we enjoy. So, we stuck to the green sauce and the tomato salsa. We even took some salsa to go. All for $21 dollars before tip. We got stuffed and woke up the next morning still talking about how delicious everything was. We had to leave the next day, so we couldn't/t go back, bet we would have in a heartbeat. It will be on our list to eat there every day next time we go to Jackson. read more

Were doing some laundry at the laundromat nextdoor and got hungry for lunch so thought we'd check this place out. Wow! Fantastic authentic Mexican food! We got some tacos and a burrito and there was plenty of food to go between two of us. I couldn't finish the burrito it was so big and full of delicious flavor! The burrito comes with guac (awesome) and salsa and filled so full of (chicken, for me), rice, cheese and it's soooo yummy. Service was great and it wasn't busy when we went in around noon. Absolutely excellent. In the top 5 tacos I've had in my life. I tried a number of tacos here - chicken, steak, and Al pastor - and all of them were top notch. Chicken was my favorite. This is true, authentic Mexican and lots of locals eating here so you know it's good. The red hot sauce that came on the side was super spicy and met my spice level needs. Staff were very friendly, service was prompt and the food was a great value! I wish we had discovered this place earlier in our visit, but we'll definitely be back next time we are in Jackson Hole. read more

Do you appreciate great, truly authentic Mexican food? This is the place, the tampiquena was excellent, and the Molcajete (for two, or one if you're really hungry or on Keto) is tremendous. The tortillas are plentiful and handmade. A couple of notes - they don't bring you chips and salsa the minute you sit down (or at all), tables can be a little close, there is no candlelight or ambient music, service is a little hit or miss but friendly. NOT a place for date night probably. But...If you're REALLY a foodie (e.g. the food is why you're here) this is the place for you. If not, I'd truly suggest takeout (and they are very efficient with takeout) because it's that good, you'll be sorry you missed it. This gets 4 stars because of the authenticity of the Mexican food. Unfortunately, they do not give you everything on the menu. For example, on 2 separate occasions I ordered a burrito and NEVER got sour cream (not even on the side). I would HIGHLY recommend that you get this food to go. They are not practicing ANY social distancing in this restaurant. Both times the restaurant was packed wall to wall with people. Very very very good food. I was a little skeptical walking in. I ordered 3 chicken tacos with avocado and a side of rice. Chicken was all white meat and cooked perfectly. Tortillas were what made the taco, all homemade, fresh and soft. Rice was probably one of the best Mexican rice dishes I've ever had. The only thing that grossed me out about this place was the lack of soap in the bathroom, I'll just have to trust the have a bottle of hand sanitizer in the back for the workers I will definitely he returning! read more

Jackson loves to price gauge the food industry, so paying for authentic mexican at 5 backs a taco feels like theft. Fortunately this place doesnt do that. Staff seems friendly and family inspired. Food is pretty nice and much more affordable than any other mexican place I can find in Jackson. Prices are still high for the mexican Im used to paying but because they are so competitive, ill take it as a win win for El Metate. First hint that you're in a good Mexican restaurant -- there were more local hispanic workers eating there than tourists! Authentic, next door to a laundromat. Mostly local Hispanic clientele. The only restaurant we ate at in Jackson that wasn't overpriced. Expansive menu, I didn't find a salad on it but they made one on request. The menu we were handed was slightly sticky, but if you can get over that- you are in for terrific food, friendly service, and decent prices. Restrooms were clean.
