The restaurant has a modern urban feel. there is a dance floor with neon lights in the entry and the main dining room is lit well and has a modern industrial feel. I attended an event at this venue and did not specifically dine there. But service was good and the staff is friendly and informative. This is a great restaurant for families and it is located conveniently by the Square. read more

My wife and I visited Kalu today with great expectations after viewing the menus on the door. She ordered the chicken enchillada plate with mole sauce and I ordered the Chile - CHORRILLANA, which is french fries topped with beef, sausage, carmelized onions, 2 fried eggs and a mayo concoction that tasted pretty darn good. I had never ordered anything like this before and was excited to try it. I even took a picture of it. On mine, the french fries, the eggs and the mayo were the best parts. Unfortunately, the meat was tough like chewing on leather laced with gristle. On the enchillada plate we did not see any chicken. The mole was sweet not savory and the middles of the enchilladas were cold. The rice and beans were okay. The server was attentive and apologetic about the food and offered to redo the enchilada plate but we turned him down. You can only make a good first impression once and Kalu did not. We left hungry. Solid Mexican food just off the square. It's a newer spot so it's less busy then some of the other hot spots but honestly better than the other Mexican restaurants within walking distance. Margaritas are STRONG and big. Great for families early in the evening but definitely has a clubier (for Jackson) vibe at night with Karaoke some nights. This was place was pretty so so for me. Not super vegan friendly but there are always options at Latin American places. Got a deconstructed veggie burrito without sour cream and cheese to make it gluten free and vegan. Veggies were very oily, beans were good, and rice was meh. The salsa that came at the beginning had a spaghetti sauce taste to me. Lunch pricing was good tho! We came around 2:30 pm on a Friday, and we were the only people in the whole place. Vibe was kinda cute but nothing to write home about. I'd skip and try Hatch if you want Latin American cuisine. Server was super nice tho. read more

We were excited to have no wait on a Friday night. (Hindsight: this is not a great sign) Tables were not entirely full so we thought we would be able to have a tasty dinner and get back on the road. Well. The chairs are super uncomfortable and we had to sit in them for a long time because despite a less than full dining room we had what seemed a ridiculously long wait. We ordered cheese dip appetizers and they were not at the table even after 30 minutes. And after one water refill (that we had to wave someone down for) nobody checked on us or updated us. The people next to us who came after us got their food (which turned out to be the wrong food and they had to ask for corrected food to go because they had to get going too) before we did which isn't the weirdest but it a little annoying. Our food all came at different times. We also got no silverware and there was seemingly no one around to fetch us some for a while. The poor hostess was also having to run food. So nobody was greeting guests who were waiting at the front door for a while. She was sweet and helpful when she could get around to us, but she was spread way too thin. When the food finally came, we had to ask for our queso appetizers again. Turns out a queso appetizer is basically nacho cheese from a concession stand. I got empanadas. They were unfortunately bland. General consensus was everyone got bland food. Fajitas, taco salad, Hawaiian burger, quesadillas, shrimp... all under seasoned or not seasoned at all. Salad dressings were missing. The chicken fajitas had a surprisingly small amount of chicken. Altogether just a large disappointment. When this experience shows up in multiple reviews it displays a pattern of dysfunction. It speaks to a lack of management support and/or a lack of staff. I want to be gracious if it's a staffing issue, but I also want to express my displeasure at my own experience and inform others that this is not an ideal dining establishment. It needs a lot of work to keep up with the demands of a tourist destination. One star for general cleanliness. read more

We asked for more once we finally received our food (from a different waitress) but only ever received the water. They were not that busy, so there really didn't seem to be an excuse for how disorganized everything was running. I ate breakfast here this morning. It was amazing. The pancakes with berries absolutely delicious. My sister had a breakfast with eggs, ham and a biscuit, all of that was great too. The horchata is the real deal. I recommend the tradicional chileno. It's a loaded french fry chileno style.
