El Metate on North Cache street in downtown Jackson is an authentic family owned restaurant serving delicious Mexican dishes. I was out for dinner with a friend of mine. He told me that the Lanchero dish was one of his favorites. I ordered it and it was indeed phenomenal. It contained two pork chops topped with shredded lettuce and cojita cheese. I also had a pepino agua fresca. The service was great and friendly. El Matate is one of my favorite restaurants in Jackson because it is actually one of the only authentic and non-Americanized (cuisine wise) restaurants. The ambience is chill and laid-back. The restaurant is a decent size and not busy on week nights. On weekends, however and holidays they have a live music and a DJ. The service was the ONLY issue we had. We arrived with only few tables taken, yet we waited over 30 min for our food. Seems that they prioritize mobile orders and people they know or locals that come in over regular customers. A man walked in 15-20 min after we had already ordered and got his food within less than 10 minutes. Saw a lady wait around 20 minutes for her food to be packaged up because a lady there was packaging up other mobile orders. I guess I'm spoiled, but I automatically dislike Mexican restaurants that charge for chips and salsa, especially when the chips tasted like they were from the dollar store and the salsa was as bland as oatmeal. Putting that aside, the meal was adequate. No real complaints there. The service, however, was top 3 of the worst I've ever had. We came in a 4:00 on a Tuesday, and it was far from busy. We stood at the counter for a good 5 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. When we were finally seated, we got our menus. It was another couple of minutes before someone took our drink order. Another 5 minutes and our waitress, clearly annoyed, greeted us with "You ready!" Those were literally the only two words she said to us the entire time. Upon finishing, we sat...and sat...and sat, until I finally had to go up and ask for a box and our check. Nobody checked on us through the entire meal. No drink refills. No asking if everything was good and if we wanted anything else. You know, typical restaurant service. Do yourself a favor and skip this joint. I don't know if this is representative of all of Jackson, but it was our only meal there and we left feeling very dissatisfied and not looking forward to returning there anytime soon. read more

As soon as we walked in, no one greeted us and we weren't sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves because the sign was not visible. We walked back to the waitresses where they still didn't acknowledge us until we spoke to them. Once we were sat, the booth was dirty. The server was speaking on her cellphone and didn't say anything to us when she gave us the menus. Another waitress brought us waters and did not ask if we wanted anything else. A group of servers stood around in a circle, more focused on their phones and private conversations than on attending to customers. No one ever came by to check on us or ask how our food was. The margarita I ordered was undrinkable -- tasted like straight sugar, with no balance or flavor. After we finished eating, we waited over 30 minutes before realizing no one was bringing the check. We had to get up and ask for it ourselves. That's when things went from bad to unacceptable. As soon as we stood up, the group of servers started pointing, laughing, and making inappropriate sexual comments about my boyfriend's body -- specifically his butt. It was immature, unprofessional, and deeply disrespectful. To think this meal was over 80 dollars is very disappointing. We will absolutely never return. If I could give six stars, I would! My friend and I were just coming out of a week-long backpacking trip in the Gros Ventre and wanted a warm meal. This was one of the top-rated restaurants in Jackson. There was another well-rated Mexican spot, but given that the name of this restaurant is in Spanish, we thought it would be more authentic. There was a line; it was an afternoon on a holiday, so this was understandable. After a little while we were seated. I don't like thinking about menus. They had some options on the menu for two people--we selected Molcajete. During this time, everyone around us was drinking these absolutely massive drinks that I would describe as a shandy margarita--they involved a 40 oz beer, agua fresca, and a pink salted (massive) glass. But they weren't on the menu as far as we could tell, and we didn't venture to inquire. After a little while, the dishes started coming out: a bowl of green sauce, a bowl of red sauce, a stack of 20 corn tortilla, a bowl of sliced limes, and a massive frying pan piled high with chicken, steak, chorizo, shrimp, massive jalapeños, cactus, and green onions. It was a choose-your-own-adventure taco festival! Turns out the bowls full of sauce were hot sauce, not salsa, but we didn't want to waste it, so we were soon sweating! It was a kind of ridiculous amount of food for two people, but after a week in the wilderness, we were ready for it! While all this was going on, the tables started consolidating in part of the room to host an ever-growing birthday party. By the time we left, there must have been thirty people lining a series of tables snaked around the room. They were having a great time, so it was a lovely atmosphere to be in. It was a great place to eat before they moved to their new location. Customer service it started to get bad, the daughter of the owner she wasn't polite when they had to fix my order to go; that I had to wait almost 45 minutes. I found a piece of cardboard from a box lid. I called back to tell them, when I went back and showed them the cardboard piece. They started making comments that maybe I just put it there to claim a new plate. Finally they decided to get me a new plate to compensate for the accident of the cardboard piece. Once I got my order the daughter of the owner started making comments sarcastic comments that why only happened to me and why had to be exclusively a piece of cardboard. I tried to explain again the whole deal and told her that it wasn't the first time I found something wrong in my order. She just hurry to collect the money for an order os sopes and she just turn around without apologizing or at least saying sorry. The wife of the owner was the same way she saw the plate we ordered and didn't even say sorry or anything to compensate fir the accident. Customer service really sucks on this place and the worst thing is that they rise up the prices for everything on their menu. For the price you pay and you don't even get an apology for the accident. Sorry to say this but i won't go back to eat here again, i will take my business somewhere else. read more

Update: Went back again and the food is still 5 star! Ordered completely different items this time and everything was still served hot and delicious! As for service, I noticed during both visits that there were only two women seating, serving, busing and managing the register (including ringing up all the takeout orders being picked up.) So prepare to be patient with the service. Once you order, you don't wait long at all to be served your food. Probably best food (and best deal $) we had during our entire stay in the area. The food was very authentic, so flavorful and delicious! The proportions were very generous (better come hungry!) and the prices were low. Definitely where the locals go but travelers like us were welcomed the same. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere had a nice casual vibe to it. I'm going to be as accurate in this review as possible. If you are in a hurry, this restaurant is not for you. The service and service workers here are awful. A table of 9 was waiting to be sat and two tables were open to seat 2. It was just my girlfriend and I so we figured we could get one of the smaller tables because the party of 9 told us they were just waiting for a few tables to open up to accommodate their party size and that we could definitely go infront of them for a smaller table. The service workers were very rude to both me and my girlfriend when we asked about it and they insisted the larger party needed to be sat first. It took forever to get our food but I will say, when we did, it was the most outstanding Mexican food we'd ever had in the U.S. If you can get past the rudeness and you have the time, the food is worth it. As much as I'd like to give this restaurant 1 star because how poorly we were treated, I cannot.
